The Boss GT1 is (I think?) just about the cheapest Modeler that you can buy. I wanted to see how easy it is to use, and whether you can get decent tones out of it. It also is a USB interface, has a looper on board....I dunno. The screen is a bit on the outdated side vs the Nux MG30 or Valeton which are a bit more expensive but a bit more modern feeling UI wise?

Thanks, John. These sound lovely. I look forward to using them.
I really really want to try your GT1 tones but sadly, I don't have a PC to copy it. Just mixing my BOSS GT1 manually 😢
I've recorded an entire album using this unit, direct. This device is the invention of the century for us guitar players.
What genre or could you pass the link for that album?
In 2019 I played a show opening for a big national artist here in Canada - a few thousand people there and I was surprised to see the headliners guitar player just using a GT-1 direct for the whole show. He sounded great!
Can you say who?
@@imactuallyih3697 It was the guitarist for Jann Arden, Graham Powell.
Dang, that makes me want one even more.
Good enough for me
They sound glorious direct to foh.
This is, without a doubt, the best video on Boss GT1 on youtube. It truly demonstrates what this unit is capable of if in the right hands. The best thing is that you are going direct out and not usb here right? Boss should officially endorse this video for demonstrating this unit. Great job!!
I've had a gt1 for about a year and a half now, and I've gotten tons of compliments on the tones. Best money ever spent.
The GT1 is ridiculously versatile. Your playing is pretty hi-spec, too. Nicely done.
I’m with my GT-1 since 2020 and it was an amazing surprise! I’m totally in love with it since then. Thanks for the patches!
I used to own one of these, played it straight into the front of a BlackStar HT5 and those tones were almost as good as anything I've got with much more expensive gear since. Well worth a look if you're on a budget.
Got mine back in 2019 and has used it for recordings and every live gig ever since. I run it through the FX on a Marshall origin 20w with a 2x12 cab. It sounds amazing. Blew up the amp one time, just hookrd it up straight to the PA. Sounded great!!
I know the presets are on that little dial, but is there a way to switch between presets with your foot and not the dial? That's my only hold up when deciding if I want to get this. If I'm going for something like this I want the ability to have a clean preset and a heavy preset and switch them on the fly.
Edit: I know there's the control switch but that seems to just be changing effects in the same preset, rather than say acoustic sim to metal tone.
@@tylercady3985 well.. the way I set it up is - on preset 1 i have the basic hard rock rythm sound, on preset 2 i have the same sound but more gain and stuff for soloing, on preset 3 i have acc simulator and on preset 4 and 5 more heavy metal sound.. can easily switch between them with your foot using the up and down bank switch. And then the third switch i use for turn on and off certain fx or gain.. Its not ideal but it works.
You’re guitar playing is other worldly !! So good. Great demo
The VOX at about 06:30 is heaven ... thank you for your great playing and amazing reports ...
I bought mine in 2018 & love it. I don’t bother miking my amps anymore & my tone-snob friends are completely fooled. They all think that I’m miking-up my amps.
I’ve never used-it live, but would have no problem doing so in a pinch.
Hi is it possible to use it as standalone pedal for ampless setup or it needs another amp and cab sim pedal like boss ir-2 and the likes?
Great playing makes the GT-1 sound so good. Well done.
Several years ago, I replaced my GT-100 with the GT-1 + SY-300. I was able to get GT-1 and/or SY-300 sounds to stereo outs. I used a Roland EV-5 expression pedal to blend the SY-300 levels with the GT-1.
I've since moved to GT-1000 or SY-1000 if I need synth, and don't combine them.
The design format is perfectly done and many effects, especially the drives, delays, amp emulation, EQ settings and reverbs are of professional quality.. Very fairly priced also, just a volume pedal is about half the cost of this pedal..
I love the form factor. For beginner to intermediate player ia really nice. Honestly, this is just the right price for a multi-Fx $200.
I just picked one up and I love it. No problem making it sound great
Some of the downloadable presets are incredible
New subscriber. I've watched quite a few videos on the Boss GT-1 because I was interested in possibly purchasing one and like what I've seen . Your video was the selling point, as you really showcased the versatility and range of this little unit. Your playing is phenomenal, keep up the good work.
Fun video, good run-down on the GT-1. Tasty licks, too. We've been a bit blown away lately as we have started running our GT-1 straight into the power amp of our Katana mkII head(s). Any amp loop insert will do,but...wow. Our mic'd cabs sounds via GT-1 were better than anything we were getting out of the Katana head and software. Made no sense, but we now prefer dialing in tones in the GT-1 over the Katana. Les Paul 498t's,vintage 2-12 Celestion cab -- note seperation, string by string, whether clean or dirty blues, was stunning. SO close to tube tone,a lot of fun.
I can’t live without mine. I also bought the Pocket GT, which is perfect for travel.
I've got the Pocket GT for practice, which has the GT1 "brain" and it sounds very very good indeed.
@@thehauntedmids Doubt it
You can bypass the preamp sound yes….. and just use the fx
@thehauntedmids you totally can do this and you can remap the actual knobs on the pocket GT to run other parameters . It’s a little beast of a modeller that thing which can now even be controlled remotely. For the price it’s worth picking up and using as a little Swiss army pedal on a board.
Thank you John - great patches. I really appreciate it.
Great review, most other reviewers go for high gain tone.
You tones are tasteful ..
I get mine in a week or so cant hardly wait
Used to have a gt1... now using ampero.. but i really miss that unit.. probably i may go back to gt1 buying again...
Thank you so much for the GT1 amp patches!!!
I’ve had one for 4 years and I’m just getting back into it….
Thanks for the video and tones.
Can you do more videos on this unit?
WOW! I have one of these but never really messed with it much. I will now!
That's what happens with most Guitarists I've found...they just plug it in...pick a patch and leave it...a LOT of processors don't have really good presents...you have to create your own
I've managed to get some great tones with my GT1 from tinkering with it. The only limitation is a single reverb/delay/drive, but for the price its understandable.
you can get double delays and other effects using the fx2.
Lovely playing! It is all about the player ...
Which exit of the GT1 is for connecting to the IN of the guitar amp? L or R?
Bought mine when they came out, to get the most out of it roll your own and ignore what the amp model or effect says just use your ears and you can get any sound you need from it. I use mine to record with, it can have a digital edge to it so you need to be careful there when crafting tones.
I had to BUY one of these for my Guitarist so he could run direct into FOH...He just refused to let go of 250 pedals and an Amp onstage and said he was Old School bla bla farken bla and "Tech" was to complicated...being a Tech Head as most Keyboardists are I sat down and learnt how to use/programme it within about 5 mins in front of him...To cut a long story short...HE HAS BASICALLY STOLEN IT...and said he has Never had a better sound/tone and doesn't have to bother lugging an Amp around either as he just runs through foldback...
Well done BOSS for making this AWSOME machine available at a great Price to Keyboardists to force their Guitarists to get out of the 60s
How does it sound FOH? Can it really cut it in a live setting?
Unlike most of the others it runs on battery which is a huge difference
So does most Zoom devices, except the larger effects units, but it's a hugr plus to have that.
I love how tone-snobby people are 😂. This is so good for the money! But if people want to spend twice as much or more to get something that might sound 5% “better,” they can. I just love guitarists and how negatively biased they are because they know it’s a “cheap” product. I got a good laugh reading some of these comments!
Or it’s a Epiphone instead of a Gibson or a Squier instead of a Fender
Don’t forget the people who say it’s trash without ever even using or seeing it work in person.
Guy at the guitar shop told me these are trash but didn’t even know how to set it up.
@@juleswinnfield3958 100%
Saw a comment on here from a Guy asking if a HX Stomp was better...where I'm from a Stomp is $1300.00...a GT-1 is about $279.00
@ron Hoffman I just love the whole "TONE" Thing...I've said to so many Guitarists...No One can even Hear your TONE at a live gig...further more, the Audience doesn't CARE!!!!
I regret the day I sold it two years ago.I bought another one last year.
There’s a fella that actually tours with this. I own one of these and it’s a great unit!
immaculate playing
I regret getting rid of mine. I just could not figure out how to get the ctrl 1 to do multiple things at once and when I called boss they didn’t help. I of course stumbled on how later on and wished I never ditched it. This is like salt in the wound 😂
man your legato licks are so delicious.....caught my attention more than the gt1 tone......can you give aome tips for us newbies about the way you solo?
I love mine. That and a katana. What else you need. Best I can put it in a gigbag. With headphones and a cord. And practice anywhere. It has a input jack for my phone. I also have a fender mini mustang. It Bluetooth to my phone and has a headphone jack. For it the batt run out on my gt1
I use my Helix live and in the studio. I use my GT-1 live and in the studio. One cost £1200 and the other cost £199. Nuff said.
Plug in front of the amp?
Great video AGAIN!!
Dear Boss, give our guy a GT 1000! The big one ;)
Are the drums at the begining part of the rhythm bank? Why no gt1 video reviews the drums?
guys which one is better for worship tones...nux 30 or boss gt1?
Actually I using Boss GT-1 from last 5 years, it's a great product, but recently I facing some issues with this product, when I am changing the tone the display is not working, showing "System error" (2,1). I don't know why it's happening! Can you tell me why it's happening?
Man mine sounds nothing like this. I can’t really blame the gt1 anymore can i? I’m the problem 😂
I got a used one off of Ebay for $80... And now I am selling my $400 Hotone. Boss is just the shit when it comes to effects!
Was it the ampero ? How did they compare soundwise ?
@@thomasdrx90@CSProduction12 I also wanna know how it compared to the ampero
Can it be plugged directly to PA system and still sound great? Or do you need guitar rack?
absolutely
Hey John sick video as always!!!
I use the gt 100 unit (I think they both share the same processor etc just less buttons )
For this video what are your global eq settings? Or did you just bypass it like you wud on a helix?
I cant get any high gain lead guitar sound with long sustain in gt 1. Is it possible in gt 1000?
My Strat sounds sterile through a Fishman Loudbox Mini, which I use on farmers market gigs because it is battery powered. Would the GT1 be a good choice for adding more character to the sound. Only interested in clean and somewhat clean sounds in the context of the rootsy type of music we are doing.
Honestly tho the effects in gt1 were more then fine, I was just kinda hoping they’ll make the pocket gt in a stombox casing.
Can you please do a video using additional footswitches to control the GT1 and get more stomp style control on it
I actually made a patch on the GT-1 that lets me have "4 stompboxes" without any extra switches. I'll have to get a video gone on it
@@thenextkurt that would be super useful. There's lots of instructional videos on how to program extra switches but hardly any where you can see a multi foot switch setup being demo'd
@@AfrazAhmad01 would you want actual individual control 1 switch to 1 fx, or something more daring like 1 switch engaging multiple fx to make a sort of scene or snapshot ? You can do both.
@@AlecBourneMidiMadScientist it would depend on the song im playing, but i think something like snapshots is what I'd use more. I just want to get more use out of my GT1 in a single patch, especially while using its internal looper (which takes over the ctl1 footswitch)
That twin sounds amazing @ 10:12
Can you live set be downloaded for the GT-1000?!
same tech as the katana
So if you're using modelled amps what sort of 'actual' amp is it plugged into? And doesn't this affect the 'modelled' amp sound. Do modelled amps really sound like what they are modelling, surely what the pedal in plugged into will have a huge affect on the final sound.
Do you think that GT-1 offers anything more to someone that plays at home and records for fun if they already have a Boss Katana MK2 and a Fender Mustang GTX50?
i have boss gt-1 connected to my computer via usb.. i run the Boss Tone Studio for GT-1 application. In the connections, I select the Midi In Midi Out and Audio In and Audio Out options, all for GT-1 .. I click connect and after a few seconds the window returns to select the connection option for Midi In ,Out and Audio In ,Out .. and so same thing over and over... why?
How do I buy the gt1 pet pack?
Apologies if this seems a little random, but putting the budget aside, and only considering the quality of the sounds, how much better would you say newer devices like the Line 6 Pod Go and the Boss GX-100 are when compared to this pedal. Perhaps expressed in terms of percentage?
I haven't made myself familiar with those devices, but from my experience with many other devices I can say that what you're asking for isn't possible to give you with any honesty. Someone can tell you their own personal valuations on a device, but that has very little to do with how *you* will value a device, or how anyone else will value a device.
Guitar mags and websites will try to reduce things to a number, so you'll buy their stuff, but that's just not *real*.
@@keithklassen5320 Agreed - there is no perfect answer. Took the plunge and got the Boss GX-100 a month ago. So far it’s a been a mixed-to-good journey but I hope / expect to get the sounds I want out of it sooner or later.
Can we have an update on the GT1 please? :)
The presets are not good, but you can get amazing sound, settings your own. Nice videos and playing my friend.
Factory presets are usually trash :D
I have one, just can’t get it to sound clear enough. It’s been ok for a clean sound with delay and reverb, but in my opinion every distorted or crunch sound are too dark and muffled. Even if i turn everything in the signal chain OFF it still colour the sound of the guitar and make it a bit muffled. Do you know if changing the global EQ might help? And how do i do that? Thanks 🙏 love your vids btw
Your problem might be in your setup, and how you use the GT-1.
If you use the GT-1 with an amp, then make sure to set the Output Select up properly, so it matches the type of amp you're using, and how you connect the GT-1 to it. Also, make sure to turn OFF the GT-1's PREAMP button, because you won't need the preamp sims, when using your own amplifier.
If you use the GT-1 with headphones, USB, etc. then set the Output Select to Line/Phones and enable the PREAMP button, and select your desired preamp and cabinet combination.
I hope this helps.

Não está mais disponível o pet da Boss gt1?
Não estou consigo compra
sounds great
When I change to different patches the volume get real quiet and others get real loud .I've checked the master ad pre amp volumes.t hx
I was going to sell my GT1 and buy an HX Stomp - now I'm not sure I need to! I thought the HX models were better and it had much better delays and reverbs - is that true?
Yes. It's more money but yes, it is without a doubt a step above.
It’s generations above the level of the GT1, but I would hold onto your GT1 and get the hxstomp aside if you can. The GT1 will do things a stomp actually cannot do. Using em paired together would be even more potent.
$1200.00 compared to $278.00...for $1000.00 more it better well do a lot more than a GT-1...it should damn well make a Pizza after the Gig for that much difference
@@5yrsand-bs9uf Well, I did it, bought the HX Stomp and… the reverbs and delays were great, but despite having loads of amp models, I couldn’t find one that I liked as much as the Boss sounds. The breakup is more convincing on the Boss. So bye bye Stomp!
Thanks for coming back with the feedback Dean
@johnnathancordy
could you do a comparision between nux mg30 and boss gt1
Hi, does anyone know if these sound ok direct to a PA system?
Thanks
It sounds great
well how does it compare to the more modern donner arena 200??
This sound good with external drive pedal
I don't care so much about simulating other amps but more about delay and effects such as. Great playing though.
How do I connect this to a guitar cab?
Highly recommended to noobs and experienced players. This might stay regardless on how big and expensive your pedalboard may become.
My bassist has the bass version of this unit. He uses it all the time and hasn't even really deep dived into it because he's happy with the sounds it has as is.
Very interested in picking one of these up. I noticed you cannot load IRs, but I do own a strymon Iridium.. would it work if I ran the GT1 in front of the iridium for effects/patches and use the iridium for the IRs??
I use noise gate, a switch-less wah, compressor, booster, drive and pre-amp pedals just before GT1. I use the GT1 for delay and reverbs and getting stereo out. It works well so I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work with an IR pedal. Just make sure that you are sending the signal out to a cab (there are output settings for that in GT1). It might be better to use the pre-amp within the GT1 though as you will not be able to insert effects between iridium's amp and cab.
@@tarkgundogdu8940 yes, lots of flexibility with these as I've figured out. The GT-1 is amazing for the price! Sounds are incredible.
Hi John, did you rename some presets, I have this unit, but I don't see Matchless , Vox or Marshall etc. on any presets, can you share the actual # 0-99 for these settings, very appreciated, I'm getting your specific tones from the Boss site as well. Cheers mate.
It's me again , ignore my request..I figured it out, minor lapse of sanity.
Figured it out? Cant find it in Boss tone exchange
@@jaredmacabale7285 Yep thanks, had a loss of sanity for a few minutes lol.
Hello, sorry I don´t pay attention to all video but want to know 2 things that are important to me: 1) you can make presets and assign these to each switch? (ex. 1st switch: over/delay/reverb 2nd switch: chorus/delay 3rd switch: over crunched/delay/reverb) ,,,,and 2) Is ideal to put in front of a real amp? thanks
To answer the 1st question, no you cannot use each button as an assignable switch. The left and right are dedicated to changed the patch up or down. The 3rd pedal (CTL1) can be programmed and it can even do multiple things with one push. For the 2nd question, that kind of just depends on the amp I think. If you can get a clean sound from your amp this can help you get more tones but, if you like the sound of your amp already, you can just use the effects in the gt-1 instead.
@@JosePineda-jn8jk regarding your answer to the 1st question, you're wrong. All the footswitches are assignable to specific effects. But the only thing that I'm not so sure is the amount of effects you can assign to a specific fs.
i wouldn’t recommend this pedal unless you have a computer to connect it to(to play professionally), there are a lot of effects but most of them are like a “base” effect, you kinda have to mess around with it for it to sound good save a few( power drive and A dist overtone), overall it’s awesome but it’s a little too overcomplicated in my opinion.
The Pocket GT has the same modeling engine
This is a very naive question but I can't wrap my head around with how these work. Do you go guitar --> pedal --> interface --> computer? Can you skip the computer and go straight into headphones?
Yes, you should be able to use headphones direct to the unit. Computer is just more fine tuning of the unit if you so choose.
Ty rock and roll!
I've got my boss gt-1 just recently and tried it live with a not so good setup using a fender twin reverb as an amplifier. It sounded great low volume but I'm having trouble with managing noise with it when adding volume from the amp. Feedbacks quite a lot. Setup my NS to 60 and release to 15. Maybe I'm still getting used to the effects. It's much better to connect it directly or through amps line instead of the input tho as for my experience so far .
Matthew, did you make sure to set the GT-1's Output Select to Combo Amp, and turn OFF the PREAMP button on the GT-1? If not, then there's your problem, and the result of the poor setup.
Also, dont stick to the Factory Presets, they are really no good, instead create your own, and you'll really see what this excellent unit can do!
I haven't touched the settings on the NS, and I really don't see why you would, to be honest... Keep your gain and volume levels controlled, and you'll have a perfectly fine output.
If you connect the GT-1 to headphones, mixers, monitors, USB, etc. then the Output Select should be set to Line/Phones, and the GT-1's PREAMP button should be enabled.
I hope this helps.

@GuitarNTabs Well said...very well..I've said very similar things to my Guitarists over the years...especially those stuck in the 60s...more so those that go into a store to Audition a processor, flick through the "FACTORY" Presets and say....nah...sounds like crap
Are the basic tones the same as I would find in the Katana amp series?
There are far more tones available in GT-1 as you've got 27 different amps compared to the Katana's 10 amp types. There are also additional effects in the GT-1 that you don't get in the Katana. Plus, if you like you play with headphones, you get stereo with the GT-1, but only mono with the Katana. If you add a 2 button footswitch, like the Boss FS7, you've got a very flexible little unit.

ZOOM G3XN is around the same price and honestly put's this GT-1 to shame....(and yes I rented BOTH, it's not even close, just sayin')
good
How can I get these patches sir?
Would you still recommend to buy this or not?
Really , to me , I can't tell the difference between one amp and a hundred others - and neither can the audience - so this feature is a waste of processing power to me. I bought a Line 6 POD XT with a thousand amp, cabs, mic placements, effects combinations and I used only FIVE! I don't use it any more because it is like carrying a Samsonite suitcase around. My effects now are a Boss tuner, homemade Wah to Vox 847 circuit, Boss Delay, Boss Chorus, homemade overdrive, Boss RC Looper - straight into the PA.
