Once again, a topic became bigger than anticipated, so we’ll have Part 3 to finish it off next week!
Tq man
Already looking forward to it. I sometimes wake up with coffee listening to these.
I'm not complaining, more videos for us 😁
😍👌
No complaints here, loving this content
"The wisdom borne out of the West was forsaken. Kings made tombs more splendid than the houses of the living, and counted the old names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls, musing on heraldry, or in high, cold towers asking questions of the stars; and so the people of Gondor fell into ruin. The Line of Kings failed. The White Tree withered. The rule of Gondor was given over to LESSER MEN."
It's interesting to see where that was taken from - Faramir talking to Frodo & Sam...
‘Death was ever present, because the Númenóreans still, as they had in their old kingdom, and so lost it, hungered after endless life unchanging. Kings made tombs more splendid than houses of the living, and counted old names in the rolls of their descent dearer than the names of sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry; in secret chambers withered men compounded strong elixirs, or in high cold towers asked questions of the stars. And the last king of the line of Anárion had no heir. ‘But the stewards were wiser and more fortunate. Wiser, for they recruited the strength of our people from the sturdy folk of the sea-coast, and from the hardy mountaineers of Ered Nimrais. And they made a truce with the proud peoples of the North, who often had assailed us, men of fierce valour, but our kin from afar off, unlike the wild Easterlings or the cruel Haradrim.
@@NerdoftheRings The meanings here are completly different as you have shown. I do not believe that this is done in spite of the staewards as if the the filmmakers had an effective dislike for everyone of them, but felt the need to change it to fit the setting and narration.
We have to keep in mind, that the time frame of Lord of the Rings is extremly unwieldly for a movie or serial production as it can seem especially disruptive to the story. I believe this was changed, because it had make sense why Gondor and the Realm of Men was in such general disarray and so heavily hit by Sauron during the War of the Ring. Would this statement like you pointed it out be brought in the movie, it would make people scratch their head as to why this situation arose in the first place.
It also fits better into the feeling for the audience that the past, what..., ~200 years were bad while also aknowledging the timeframe of the movie. One has to keep in mind, that events in the books and general lore move slower by several magnitudes. The stewards get thown under the bus, but the movie has an enjoyable pacing. Pick one.
Thorongil's story puts a very different context behind Aragorn interacting with Denethor's eldest son in the Fellowship, and not being in a personal hurry to return to Minas Tirith.
Yes!!!
It's so interesting how Rohan came to be, love that oath that is sworn at its creation. I'm guessing the beacons between Rohan and Gondor would have been built around this time as well.
It says the beacons existed much earlier actually! (I'll cover this in Part 3 when they come into the story)
The Story of the Stewards of Gondor is FASCINATING. So much so that i would love to see an anime or animation show about that period of time.
Animated Lord of The Rings inspired show? Yes please. 😎👍
Aragorn referring to his time here as Thorongor in Minas Tirith when he's speaking to Boromir in Lorien is really cool
So Theoden's great grandfather battled Haradrim with war elephants. I assumed the Rohirrim were just brave and inventive, but they may have already had tactics when they met again at Pelennor Fields.
I have completely forgotten how the Rohirrim stopped the Haradrim from entering Minas Tirith. Read the book probably 2-3 years ago. Was it similar to the film depiction?
Horse archers are superior to war elephants
@@pattonramming1988horse spear throwers even more effective.
@@misaelfraga8196 maybe but what's the accurate maximum range of a javelin
@@pattonramming1988 do you really need to be that precise when your target is an elephant? Remember, you need not have to kill the elephant outright. Just have to neutralize its combat effectiveness.
Corsairs of Umbar is a great threat to Gondor.
If we were to get another animated LOTR film down the line, I’d totally be down for it to be something relating to Gondor.
The kin-strife could be pretty epic, I think.
Either Gondor at its peak or the war of dwarves and orcs would be incredible
It could be live action, too.
@@benjaminallen3371 naah i am tired and enough of seeing what amazon did with their series. I think due to the modern political agendas and woke culturalism it would be ruined
Oath of Cirion gave me goosebumps...
"This oath shall stand in memory of the glory of the Land of the Star, and of the faith of Elendil the Faithful, in the keeping of those who sit upon the thrones of the West and of the One who is above all thrones for ever."
The invocation of the name of Eru makes it so powerful and divine. Amazing. Thank you so much for this wonderful video.
This channel really makes you want to learn more about Middle-Earth and its history aside from the actual books themselves.
Holy crap, No wonder Denethor hated Aregorn in the movie, He freaking got old and Strider didnt, lol
Something I just realized now… I wonder if Denethor perceiving favoritism of his father towards Aragorn/Thorongil somehow created his own favoritism of Boromir over Faramir.
Could be, could be
It could also be that Denethor would be resentful of any advice Thorongil gave to his father, such as trusting Gandalf, so when Faramir showed preference for Gandalf, he became resentful of Faramir as well, scornfully calling him “wizard’s pupil”.
I love all your videos, but these in particular because they focus not just on one character but on the broader history of an entire realm. Will you do a similar one about Rohan in the future? :)
For sure!
And Arnor!
I don't know why, maybe it's the underlying music, but I always get emotional watching these videos. I literally tear up and cry. x'D They're so good.
The fake that Tolkien invented such a vast array of intricate histories when nothing even remotely comparable existed beforehand alone is enough to induct the man into the hall of geniuses.
🍻HAIL THE VICTORIOUS DEAD!!!🍻🗡🛡
One of the most alluring things about the story of Gondor and Arnor are the post-breakup micro kingdoms of Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur. The idea that there were Dunedaín / Westron kingdoms distinct from any that we see in LoTR, presumably with cultures and styles of their own, is fascinating. It poses questions about the actual size of these geographic areas and, what their populations must have been, what size of armies they could field, and what monuments they made to give themselves an identity in the brief time they had before their collapse.
And on top of all of that, the fact that as strange and unknown as Arthedain might have been, the Shire itself and the lands around it through which the Hobbits and Strider travel for the first chunk of the journey are all the ruined lands of these extinct kingdoms. Somewhere in their journey to Rivendell they might have passed the ruined capital city of a long-ago kingdom, where Aragorn's ancestors once sat enthroned.
Annuminas and Fornost, the capitals of Arnor, were both north of the Shire, as well as the path Aragorn led the hobbits on to Rivendell, so the only structures the Dunedain had left within sight of that path were the ruins of the forts on the Weather Hills and the remains of the watchtower of Amin Sul on Weathertop.
@@tomlienert882 that's true (I suppose I could have looked on a map 😅). Still it's enchanting to imagine children growing up in and around the Shire knowing they can hike out to the ruins of a great medieval-style city where long-dead kings once sat. LoTR doesn't seem to go into a lot of detail about how much of the history of their region folks living in Eriador would be taught (i.e. did Bilbo go to school as a child, or is every child only as educated as their parents' personal library allows?). If you were a Dunlending child, or a descendent of an Arthedain peasant farmer who had remained in spite of the depopulation (Gandalf references a mannish farmer who he used to know in the Hobbit who got eaten by the three trolls), what would you really know about the old kingdoms that used to rule your area?
Arnor always had a smaller population and fewer Dunedaín than Gondor did even if Arnor was where High King Elendil ruled from. Indeed, after Arnor split into three, Rhudaur had so few Dunedaín in it that they were overthrown by the Hillmen, evil men who were allied with Angmar. There's plenty of maps online that show the borders of the three successor kingdoms.
@@MrARock001 in the book, that area is referred to by the Bree-folk as “Deadman’s Dike” and viewed as being haunted-probably because of the Witch-king having sent wraiths to occupy the Barrow Downs east of the Shire.
@@istari0 thanks! That reminds me that I also enjoy how the further away from the main story (as relevant to the plot of LoTR) that we get, the less nuance there is in the affairs of history. The "hillmen" are just uniformly evil men working with Angmar, rather than anything complex, like aggrieved Westrons unhappy with Númenorean rule.
Another fantastic video. The history of Gondor could be a series of movies itself.
A TV series IMO
We ride to Gondor!
Muster the Roherium
The final twist of information in the video was mind blowing
I'm really enjoying the history range podcasts, helps to hear details that come from multiple sources, not just the appendices.
I've really been enjoying this series! I love IRL history, and it's so cool to see a fantasy world's history presented in such a familiar manner, as if it were real history itself. If you do more in this style, I'm totally here for it!
It’s really incredible that Tolkien created so much history and lore for his world that there can be dozens of videos made breaking down just small parts of it
Another Great weekend😊 everyweek new Illustrations & story.
I was hesitant about a long history series of Gondor. Was there much more to learn? Despite having heard much of the details, putting it all together as you have done so has been richly enjoyable! This weeks discussion of the pledges between the new Rohan and Gondor was told magnificently, bringing about deep love for this alliance that was already there but based now in greater details of its emergence.
I now eagerly await Part 3!
Without having seen it yet: Awesome!
Masterpiece. So this what Gondor was upto when westford fell
Interesting to see how we got from "Steadfast" to "FLEEEEEE! FLEEEEE FOR YOUR LIIIIIVES!!!!"
"MY LINE HAS ENDED!" - Tomato Scourger
😂😂😂I blame the Palantir! Too much TV rots the brain they say! Too much screen time with Sauron! 😂😂😂
@@NostalGamation🤣🤣🤣🤣TOMATO SCOURGER!!!!!OMG I'M DYING...❤😂😂😂😂
Nicely done. Have to admit it, no one stepping forth to claim the crown and allowing the Stewards to rule is why there was a Gondor for Aragorn to rule.
Gonder has a very rich history! It has withdtood SO many challenges!
You are seriously my favorite RUclipsr! GREAT video! Ive always loved how you can dive into middle earths history In the exact same way we can with our own history. Truely an amazing world jr and Christopher Tolkien created!
Part 1 was pretty fantastic. Looking forward to part 2!

Gondor! Gondor, between the Mountains and the Sea!
West Wind blew there; the light upon the Silver Tree
Fell like bright rain in gardens of the Kings of old.
O proud walls! White towers! O wingéd crown and throne of gold!
O Gondor, Gondor! Shall Men behold the Silver Tree,
Or West Wind blow again between the Mountains and the Sea?
Love this, thank you so much for sharing!
Well done again, good Stweard of Lore.
So movies are actually all over the place with their timeline, characters, stories. This clears a lot of compressed time line from the movies.
Fantastic part 2. Keep up the great work and can’t wait for part 3. Peace ✌🏻
Your work is amazing, buddy. Keep it up, you`re great
Thank you so much for all your work, so informative and helpful. Artwork rly good too.
so much history. this is awesome . cant wait for the next part
Excellent! Well done Matt!😁🍻🧝♂️🧝♀️🧙♂️
This is my favorite video you've done so far.
Always fascinated with the differences between the films and books. Loving this series
Great video.
This three-parter was amazing, and your appreciation for all the artwork you can find to paint these videos with interesting visuals is always a delight.
Yet I remain ignorant about Southwest Gondor. We have the river "Morthond", we have the knowledge that the army of the dead crossed these lands and that the Corsairs assailed these shores, and that humans climbed (also) from the South to kill the invading orc populations. But I don't think I ever got any information about what exists in these regions. Is it depopulated? Mostly rural? Are there any relevant kingdoms or events happening South of the Nimrais?
you are amazing and this is fantastic. thank you for every singel video!!
These videos are fantastic. Thank you.
Can't wait for next week. Good job sir
Can we please have an RTS of this? Battle for Middle Earth III: The rise and fall
Nice work dude
Excellently Explained ❤
Really wonderfull and interesting. Can't wait untill part 3 arrives.
actually mindblowing just how much depth the lord of the rings stories really have!!!
The great kingdom of all time of mens. Brilliant . Gondor is one of my fav kingdoms. Love your videos. We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos.
Excellent. Thanks again.
While a part of me is glad Middle Earth hasn't been mined for all it's worth in adaptations, I would absolutly LOVE a faithful series about the line of Stewards. Tolkiens writing is so beautiful I can vividly see the oath between Gondor and Rohan in my mind and it would be amazing to see that brought to a screen with a beautiful soundtrack playing as the sun sets.
That is a challenge. There are so many stewards and some of them lived a long life. You would have to make a drama series or a documentary.
@@rikuvakevainen6157 oh yeah, I know it'd be real hard, and even harder to do it right, so it isn't something I expect at all - but a man can dream haha
@@darthmarth87 If there are people who have guts to do it then I would be also happy to see the result.
Wonderful video explaining much previously unknown thank you
Well done!!
I adore these videos. I’ve recently read some of the books, and watching these videos brings the magic back. The same magic I felt when I was a kid and my dad read the hobbit to me.
"The Witch King has killed the last king of Gondor."
Man, that hits hard.
Love it. I’m always learning something. Like how much Tolkien liked to reuse names 🤣
Apparently it was more common among men but frowned upon by Elves...
Even though I know this history well, it's still moving in the telling. It's also one of the many reasons why the Lord of the Rings is such a moving tale. Tolkien gave years of his life building a history for just four novels he published.
Thank you very much for this video. 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Oh my gawwwddd yes I was waiting for part two :3
You should do a video about Hammerhand!
Already got you covered! ruclips.net/video/EbI2WyNmh70/видео.html
This is a great series on a lesser known subject...at least to me... I mean instead of Gondor coming into different stories, here we can learn about the history of Gondor in chronological order. The period around the forming of Rohan is a personal favourite.. also, interesting to note that most of the stewards did a great job
Excellent!
I haven't read over it in an age but I got giddy when you mentioned Thorongil. I was like, "why do I remember that name so vividly?" Lol. Then it hit me! Ha ha ha.
Amazing!
I love this
I lear so much about what I wants to know about the earlier ages and what makes up that reason of what happens in the LOTR
THANK YOU ❤😊🙏
Just saying 🇧🇻

Hi.. Love your work.. What happened to episode 6 breakdown of RoP?... I am on the 3rd breakdown and I've seen the show a couple of times but going from 5(BD) to 7(BD) with your detailed explanations will leave so many holes, and that would yuck.. *cheers"
Sorry found it.. It's not in the RoP's playlist... Thanx for everything..
Great job! I really enjoyed this twoparts history of Gondor! I hope that you will create history of Rohan too 😊
Just wait til you get to the end of video…haha. This is gonna be 3-parts. Lol
I caught a shot of Túrin son of Húrin, wearing the Dragon Helm of Dor-lómin during the bit about Turin II. 😂 I wonder if he made himself a dragon helm to honor his namesake?
THAT should be an Anime...with bodacious Beleg Strongbow! 🥰
Eärnur has been awaited back for so long.. I wonder if after the War of the Ring, were there any archaelogical mission and research for any tracks and remains from him (Eärnur) at Minas Morgul?
Next week couldn’t come soon enough 😭😂
05:42 Mmm Making their way! 😃 Bidet, Critters! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
God if the oath of Cirion and Eorol was to be reenacted this would be absolutely legendary.
Please do Rohan next
Am I wrong?? I had believed that the Uruk-Hai were not bred by Sauron but by Saruman who, by breeding men with orcs, came up with a race of orcs that could withstand the light of the sun
In the appendix of the LOTR, it states that the Uruk-Hai were created by Sauron in the year 2475 of the Third Age.
@@4Bobay Thank you for your information, and correction. I wonder if I'll get off my lazy ass and look at what was actually said in the txt of The Two Towers.
Still waiting on that tour of middle Earth in the third age.
Also I want to know how Aragorn is descended from both houses. Next week?
Aragorn is a direct descendant of Isildur. Anarion was Isildur's brother. Even though the line of kings failed in Gondor, the last king of Gondor had a daughter, Fíriel, but Gondor's laws did not allow for a ruling queen. However her marriage to the last king of Arthedain merged the lines of Isildur and Anarion so Aragorn is a direct descendant of Anarion as well.
@@istari0 Thank you. I knew it was somewhere just didn't know how.
Super fun!

“And if by chance an honest man like yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies... And then they will fear you.” - Vito Corleone
There is an alternate timeline where Amazon recruited your team to properly adapt the appendices...
😅❤
So close to that Milly
This might be more of a fan fiction idea, but what if King Earnur was never killed, but held prisoner by the Witch King, and cursed to live and see the suffering of his people through a Palantír, and only allowed to die if he sits on the throne again...
Why would they do such a thing? They probably tortured him and tried to get as much information out of him as possible. And then they, with most certainty, just killed him, when there was nothing else to gain from him.
@@davidhimmelfahrt3732 Maybe evilness for evilnesses sake? (Suffering for the sake of suffering) Or do you think that would be more of a Ramsay Bolton thing, and not something that Sauron would come up with?
As Minas Mogul is cleansed after the war, I had been thinking what would be found there.
11:38 Yes, but where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?
Mostly to the south of the Ered Nimrais but part of it was to the east of Mordor.
@@istari0 DIdn't expect a reply from Olórin. Thanks.

Strong men saying strong words that echo throu generations
I always though Saruman first bred the Uruk--Hai by crossing men and orcs ( How he got the humans to co-operate I don't even wanna consider ) Am I wrong about this ???
4:03 I guess this Boromir is NOT to be confused with Boromir "The pincushion"?!
In online discussions, many Tolkien fans have entertained the idea that Gondor is comparable to the Byzantine Empire. J.R.R. Tolkien describe Minas Tirith in a long letter to Milton Waldman, that was probably written in late 1951, as the "half-ruinous Byzantine City of Minas Tirith" and that of Gondor in its history "fades slowly to decayed Middle-Age, a kind of proud, venerable, but increasingly impotent Byzantium.
Mind blown
