    It was about time I made a video about my favorite camera, the Bronica SQ-Ai. Besides plenty of footage and sample images, I talk (a lot) about almost every detail of this little, beautiful, camera. It's a long video, I apologize in advance! Do you shoot medium format? If so, which camera do you have? And most importantly, what's your favorite camera ever?

    • @inevitablecraftslab

      favorite medium format ever: hasselblad flexbody and rolleiflex sl66e (if the 80 2.8 planar would have a leafshutter)
      the camera thats always in my bag is an ETRSi with the 75mm, but i will buy a 501c/m cause i miss 6x6 too much ^^

    I am sure Mr. Zensaburo Yoshino, designer of this camera, is happy in photography heaven to hear your compliment on this camera. Small trivia. The name Bronica is came from his hand writing "Zenzaburo's brownie camera". We Japanese often shorten those foreign words into 4 vowels words hence Zensaburo's Brownie Camera became Bu-ro-ni-ca, 4-vowel word. Brownie is a term Kodak used for 120 film back in a day.

    I have a Bronica SQAi that I purchased new in 1990. I used it regularly for until about 2005 when I started to use digital cameras.
    I have been researching the possible purchase of a Leica Monochrom camera. That is now on hold after watching a number of your RUclips videos and seeing your brilliant results. I have got my Bronica out of retirement and am about to start shooting B&W again with it.
    I have found in a wardrobe a load of 120 and 135 films. I have 120 rolls of Ilford Delta 100 pro and Arcos 100 (which have expiry dates from another era!!!) that I intend to use and see how they perform. I intend to process the first rolls at normal speeds etc and then adjust the ISO and development times accordingly.
    A big thanks to you for rejuvenating my interest in the Bronica..... I am planning on scanning some of the old negatives and post processing them back into live....
    Thanks
    Adrian

    Like many others I switched go digital some years ago and now I'm coming back to film and love it. I used to have a Hasselblad 500 and later 2000 for 15 years with a set of lenses and now bought a Bronica and stepped into medium format again. To my mind the Bronicas are different but the Hasselblad is not a better camera. Both systems have their quirks and with the older models downright weakspots. The Hasselblad bodies, lenses and magazines all needed service at one point with some horrific experiences in the mix. Nothing my experience with other systems in 35 mm had prepared me for. The Zeiss lenses were sometimes stellar but older calculations had their limitations too. At the time it was the right solution for the problem and gave me great results but today I don't want to see a square finder again as it makes me compose and print square and if not I feel bad for wasting negative-space. Therefore I made the step and got myself a 6x7 for my restart: Bronica GS-1. Works excellent so far and doesn't feel excessively large or heavy as a system too.

      That's awesome to hear! The most important part is that you keep getting out and taking photographs. I find it so healing and good for my soul. If the Bronica did that for you, then that's great! I'm sure you'll make great images with that beast, enjoy!

    Adrian, now you have done it! This has got to be one of the best videos on any camera I have seen on RUclips! Your presentation of the Bronica SQ-Ai is balanced, honest, informative and in a word - superb! One can sense your love for this camera! I have considered getting into medium format and have been researching the Mamiya 645 1000S and this evening I found your review of the Bronica SQ-Ai and I am convinced this is the camera for me! Well done and thank you for making this video! Kind regards. Oh, and I just subscribed to your channel!

    As someone who is just making the switch to medium format from digital and 35mm film, I have found your videos to be simply priceless. Thank you for everything you’ve shared via your videos. It is all great information and it has been such a joy watching your videos. The quality and time you put into your uploads here is very much appreciated. So, sincerely, thank you! :) and, after watching the video, I really feel like I need to pick up a Bronica at some point in the future lol. I decided to buy a Mamiya RB67...she is a beauty but maaaaaan is she heavy! lol. I knew that before buying it, but nothing can actually prepare you for it until you hold the camera in your hands lol. It was such an incredible deal and in nearly mint condition though, so there was no way I could pass it up. My desire to get out there and shoot more has already gone waaaaaay up since getting the Mamiya.

You might not be able to bring with you on hikes or long walks, but I'm sure you'll find the place and moment for that beautiful camera :) The Bronica is not light either, just in case weigh the Mamiya and compare to the weight of the Bronica, to have an idea of the difference.

      They are all over EBay. I've bought two in the past 4 months, a SQ-B, and recently the SQ-Ai. Both in near mint condition.
      Be prepared to spend some $$. My SQ-B was $775 with the 80mm PS lens and recently the SQAi body with a WLF was $700. Still way less money than the equivalent Hasselblad.
      I really like the feel of shooting medium format with this camera, the look, the ergonomics and specifically the sound of the mirror and leaf shutter. It's a joy.

  • @irvinwilson3245
    @irvinwilson3245 5 лет назад +1

    Very nicely done! For those interested in purchasing one there is also the SQ-B which is based off of the Ai but without the electronics. Plus the B(budget) model doesn't have bulb or 16 sec shutter speeds and the lens that came with it didn't have time mode. You can buy a "regular" 80mm lens with time setting switch though and it works fine. These SQ-Bs are sometimes cheaper to find because people are put off by the "budget" designation. Overall it's the same camera though unless you want the electronics. Or at least I think so. Mine came with the normal 80mm lens (with time setting switch) when I bought it and was quite a bit cheaper than the SQ-A models available at the time, a few years ago.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 лет назад

      Thank you, Irvin! Very good point. So the SQ-B is completely mechanical? I love that. I feel like it'd be more reliable, and I don't really like the fact that I could run out of batteries at any moment.

      @irvinwilson3245 5 лет назад +1

    I saw some darkslides for the SQ-A a couples of weeks ago when I was buying one for one of my ETRS body's that didn't come with it. You can still find them on eBay. :)
    To avoid loosing it, I always put it together with the lens cap in my pocket and always on the same pocket. I never lost a lens cap this way so I hope I don't loose a darkslide too! (knock the wood)
    Answering to you comment, I only have an ETRS medium format camera. And love the way I need to slow down for taking shots with it.
    Have both the prism metered finder and gripper, great for having fun with family, portraits and stuff and I bought a second body only for the waist level finder and a second film back for when I'm hiking/traveling to be lighter.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 лет назад

      oh, that's good to know, thanks Goncalo! I do leave them in my pocket as well, but somehow they find the way out :D It is not the first time I have to walk a mile in deep snow looking for the damn dark slide haha. I've been lucky so far.
      The ETRS looks like a very nice camera, and I love that is a bit smaller. I do like the square format, though, that's why I'm "stuck" with the bigger one. I'm glad you use for family photos as well, that's awesome!
      Thanks for sharing :)

    • @GreggObst
      @GreggObst 5 лет назад +2

      One tip on the dark slide is that the slide from the 220 backs is the same one as the one in the 120 back. The 220 backs typically go very cheaply on eBay, KEH or Roberts/Used Photo Pro. I've purchased two 220 backs just to have extra dark slides in case the dark slides from the 120 backs get lost in the future.

    • @aows

    Great video Adrian, there are not many with detail explanation about this camera. As I am pretty new to this camera and still learning,I would like to add some important detail. It is about storing lenses and camera when not in use.After researching I found that it is better keep the body with mirror up, as this keep the spring in relaxed position.As for the lenses, they have to be kept with shutter closed.If the lens is on the camera goes in this position after the shot has been taken.If the lens is not attached on the camera there is a small knot on bayonet which need to be pressed and while pressed you need to rotate the two knots on the back under the red line. Doing this the leaf shooter is in its relaxed position. It is a small thing,but I believe it help to keep all mechanical parts in better shape.As you have many followers you can make a short video about this too, so camera users would be informed.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 лет назад

    It's insane what you get for your money with the Bronica's. I picked up a SQ-B earlier this year for almost next to nothing and love shooting it, the experience is totally different from a 35mm camera and I tend to put more thought into the pictures and composition when using it, just wish I had more opportunities to use it and take pictures.
    Only thing I'd say with these and the SQ-Ai which the B is based on for any one looking to buy one is make sure the Mirror lock up and multiple exposure levers are ok before purchasing them.
    These are sadly made out of a plastic which seems to easily break and is a common issue with these models if you look online. I'm going to try 3D printing a replacement for mine as both levers have cracked off.

      Me too. Some people seen to be forever sliding the dark slide in and out. Almost after every shot. For me the only reason would be when you want to remove the filmback. You can load film without removing the back. So while being annoying, losing a dark slide (if you only have one filmback) is not a disaster.

    Speaking of the Darkslide, an option is to stick on a Neodymium (rare Earth) magnet. Aside from the disadvantage of having your keys stick to the camera from time to time, it holds the darkslide amazingly well, but you're adding something to the camera that wasn't originally there. But again, it's that or have a higher chance of losing the darkslide.

    I also have recently started shooting Bronica SQ-A. I am hoping it can replace my current favorite camera, the Mamiya RB67 ProSD. Maybe I should say the camera that produces my favorite images. I already like it more than my Hasselblad 501c, but I don’t have a WLF yet and I prefer to shoot that way. I have the 50, 80, and 150mm. I’ve only shot about 15 rolls so far, but I’m feeling positive about it.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 лет назад

      Nice! I love the WLF as well. I do have a prism finder but don't use it. That's a nice selection of lenses, it's what makes the most sense. I kind of miss the 50mm, I think getting rid of it was a mistake. I might buy it again. Ugh!
      The good thing about the Hasselblad is that is electronic-free, I love that. The Mamiya looks nice as well! I prefer square format, though.
      Thanks for sharing!

      No electronics is overrated. I bought 3 batteries and put them in my bag. The battery in the camera is at least 3-4 months old. Maybe longer as it was in the camera when I got it. The RZ67 I have I put a battery in once a year for less than $5. I don’t use bulb, I use T exposure so the batteries last a long long time. BTW I didn’t mention it in my first comment, but just some fantastic pics in the examples.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 лет назад

      @@pilldoktor Thanks! You are right, in almost 2 years I've only had to put new batteries once. It's more about being reliable and being able to shoot in very cold weather. Cold drains the batteries really quick. But yeah, in normal conditions a set of batteries should last you a long time :)

    I guess another component you can swap is the winder crank. In place of the regular winder knob/crank, you can attach a manual or motorized winder grip which is almost indispensable for taking hand-held portraits with one of the prism finders.

    the only thing I see as an even remote down side to the SQAI is the T mode bulb shutter release on the lens, but even that isn't a big deal since it's only used for long exposures so you can just keep a dark cloth over the lens, trip the shutter, and then cover the lens again at the end of the exposure and close the shutter and you won't render any camera shake on the negative. I love my SQAI. I sold off my Bronica S2a and used the cash to buy an SQAI from KEH. Body, Prism finder, 80mm lens, and film back cost me just over 500$. I'm currently waiting for a 50mm ps and 150mm ps lens to pop up on the market and I'll get those too with some more film backs. the 80mm lens is super sharp I don't see a difference between the Japanese glass and the hasselblad glass other than a few thousand dollars in price :P the difference is Hasselblad still has repair support where the bronicas do not unless you send them to an old school repair shop. but that said the body for an sqai costs less than repair costs so just getting another body is easy.

    Hola Adrián, excelente trabajo. Quiero comprar mi primera cámara 6x6 y por supuesto estoy en la etapa de investigación. Estoy entre la Bronica SQAi, Bronica S2a y la Mamiya C220/C330. Por qué elegiste tú la SQAi sobre, por ejemplo, la S2a (que llega a 1/1000 de velocidad, más pequeña/liviana, y usa excelente Nikon lenses), o la Mamiya C220/C330 (también más pequeña y liviana, y también con lentes intercambiables)? Entiendo la desventaja de la C220/C330 de no tener interchangeable backs.
