ATTN LS SWAP FANS! - Adding OEM COOLING FANS To Any LS Swap - UTX

  • Today at Ugly Truck, we're wiring up the factory electric cooling fans on this 2004 6.0 LS swap. This donor didn't come with the option for electric fans, but a 2005 did. With the help of some wiring diagrams, we steal power from the OEM underhood fuse box and, using 3 relays, we wire up the fans in series and in parallel. The series circuit will run the fans on low, the parallel circuit runs them on high, and it's all triggered by the PCM... Just like it did on the donor.
    Here's a link to the FANS we used: amzn.to/3rKniB0
    Here's a link to the PIGTAILS for the fans: amzn.to/3tuhlZu
    **We found a complete harness kit for these on Amazon! Check it out! amzn.to/3TZuyo8

I'm depinning my Ford harness to make a stand alone for my Ls swap so my stock gauges will work. Well except my speedo. I have the other 4 figured out. Temp,oil,volt and fuel.

    Is there a way you can tell what ECU you have by year? You mentioned that the 05 ECU had the ability to regulate the fans but previous years didn’t.
    Can I guy just look at the part number of an ECU and tell it’s a 20XX model and it’s good to use. I only ask because I ordered my unit online and a year never came up.
    They did however tell me in messages they turned on fans during programming so I’m assuming they used like an HP tuners program to flash and update accordingly.

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  8 месяцев назад +1

      You can google the service number that is on the ECM and kind of get an idea of what year it is. It will be a pretty wide range though of what it came from. If your connectors are red and blue, you would be looking at 2002 and earlier. And if your connectors are blue and green you are looking at 2003 and up with the gen 3 motors. Programmers usually just upload a tune that they have on hand, so you might have a computer that is a 2004 for example but it has a tune uploaded in it for whatever year they might have had that tune for. Best thing to do is get to where you can plug a scan tool into it and the scan tool will identify what year, make and model you have for a tune. Jerry

    Yet another very good video. I’m working on another ‘97 Subaru EJ25 into a ‘73 Beetle. The fan relay wiring is so crucial in any vehicle. Running the 3 relay setup in parallel/series this way is rad. Going to give it a try in this project. I know this is LS/OBS swap videos, but the wiring is kind of universal in its application. I’ll eventually find the right truck to do my LS swap…

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Год назад

      Thanks Jon! You're exactly right that this is a universal application. As long as you have something to trigger it, this is a great way to set up electric fans on any vehicle. Send us some pics of the Subaru swap sometime! We still have that 72 Super Beetle here. I don't think we can talk him into an engine swap, but it is getting disc brakes soon! Thanks for tuning in, Jon! --Emily

  • @hardball107

    Awesome. I've got the LS swap thing pretty much down, done 10 of them with my last '68 C10 but the wiring always holds me up. I don't mind doing it but even simple things like the fans can be a chore and take an inordinate amount of time when done right and I'm talking stand alone not harness work. It's my Achilles heel. You all are the harness kings, I'm learning so much just watching. I was going to use a stock harness on the C10 but I just have to get it running so not this time but I do have a 4.8 with a T5 sitting in the back of my garage looking for a S10. Strictly low buck I'm going to take my time with that one and use a cut down stock harness and using a stock fan is a lot cheaper than picking something aftermarket. I always like developing new skills even at my advanced age, just built my own stainless steel exhaust and my MIG welds didn't come out all that bad with flux core and tri-mix but now it's on to the harness work. I have a half dozen of them, all but one DBC and it's time to get on the horse and work it out. Thanks so much for your video's, I have them archived and will be using them going forward, a lot.

    I did the same wiring went over it over and over to make sure I wired in the wires the same way but mines don’t come on. My question is if I run aftermarket universal fans will it still work or does the factory fans something in them that allows them to run at a low speed and a high speed that universal fans don’t have? I’m pretty new to wiring in fans and I’m just trying to finish up a truck build that was abandon it runs and drives just no fans

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Daniel, aftermarket fans shouldn't matter. If you're confident all the wiring is correct, I would ground the relays using a jumper wire to make sure they work. It sounds like maybe your ECM isn't programmed to run fans. Let me know a little more about what you're working with for a donor ECM and wiring harness. Thanks for watching! --Jerry and Emily

      The motor came out of a 05 Silverado 5.3 and I did see on the computer it the 2 connectors have wires coming out of them and followed them back and found it has a 2 pin connector and I just grabbed power from there? And you say ground the wire if you could help where exactly to I ground it out on the relays?

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  6 месяцев назад

      The connector that comes out of the wiring harness that goes down to the ECM are the wires that ground the high and low relays. Are you using the donor fuse box also from the 05? Jerry

    • @DanielRodriguez-tn9xj
      @DanielRodriguez-tn9xj 6 месяцев назад

      Yes I am same setup as in the video I will double check the ecm ground cable and try it again I know I did the relays right but I will try using a power probe and adding ground and hopefully that’s it. Thank you so much I have been stuck on this for 3 days

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  6 месяцев назад

      Ok. If everything is wired right. You would disconnect the two wire connector that runs the fan and then just connect the relay side of the connector to ground and your fans would start up. That system has 2 40 amp fuses for the fans and 1 ten amp fuse that runs the relays. Make sure those fuses are good also. Jerry

      @UglyTruckExperience  Год назад

      When you had your computer programmed, did you let the programmer know that you were going to run fans from that PCM. The 2002 trucks did not have electric fans and would be something the programmer for that PCM would need to know. Also, did you have to add the wires at the pcm or we're they built in the harness. Jerry

      @UglyTruckExperience Hello, thank you for responding. Pin 42 was already running both fans, but I added Pin 33 to harnes to run fans in the same manner you showed in your video. Also would I Nedd to add separate relay apart from the 3 relay set up per your video to run Vintage Air Unit and trinary switch I recently installed to my truck?

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Год назад

      Pin 33 on that 2002 ECM went to the AC system to control the recirculating door. You will need to get a hold of the programmer of that ECM and ask if its possible to make pin 33 control the High fan control. If not you will have to get a newer computer. I think pin 33 is a source to ground with key off. Sounds like you have done everything right. The 2002 computer is just not programmed or capable of running fan. If you get the fans going like they should I can't see why you would need to add anything for the Vintage Air. Let me know what happens. Curious about this one. Jerry
