  • just an idea on how to wire up electric cooling fans for your vehicle
    COOLING FANS: amzn.to/377kLRP
    those fans fit perfect on 68-72 GM A Body cars but are not recommended for LS engine swaps ... these pull like 5000 cfm together.. but I also run a desert cooler 4 row

    I saw this video has been out for a while, but Dayum!!! Great content.
    How would you wire a three relay, two speed Taurus fan to Holley Terminator?
    I have a 3 relay kit I bought years ago fro Hollister Road .com. I used a 2 temp sensor from a BMW, but removed it since Holley can now control the fans. This relay kit kicks low on gradually (180°) and then shuts off the low if the Hi turns on (195°). Once Hi cools down to 180° it will turn off and then the Low will turn back on.
    Any suggestions on how to connect this to Holley?

    @chriscraft77022 Man I have gone over this video several times in hopes of running my dual fans at 1/2 speed. I have an Entropy Dual fan radiator. I can only get one fan on but when I run power direct to the fan that doesn’t engage it fires up. I even ordered new relays. Using step 1 for low speed still only one fan and it’s number 2 fan. I can hear relay one click but no luck. Wonder if I should invest in a controller?😮

    Chris, I've been working with your layout for the two speed fan set up. I just discovered the BMW 2 temp switch, and that is how I'm going now. I am using 3 relays, as you did, middle one SPDT. 1 and 3, SPST. I am running switched 12v power to the BMW switch. From that switch, I am running the low temp wire to terminal 86, on relay #1. The high temp signal to 86, on both relay #2. and #3. #85 on all 3 relays go to ground, and #87 on relay #2 goes to ground. I hope I have it right, 'cause it even makes sense! Thank you for your help.

    Hey Chris , You definitely seem to be the guy that I need to speak to! The funny part is, in the late 90's, early 2k's, I used to know how to wire up relay's! Massive injury & years later, A...I don't remember how anymore! & B... I NEED TO KNOW HOW BECAUSE, On my 03 focus se, dohc zetec vin-3, MY COOLING FANS DO NOT OPERATE!!! I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE! I changed the cylinder head temp sensor, cooling fan solenoid, relays, checked the fuses, even ran power to the fans & THEY SPUN PERFECTLY! I NEED YOUR HELP! my focus has about 4 relays for the fans & some fuses. I really hope you can help! also, when I disconnect the cylinder head temp sensor, the fans run constantly but, will fry my alternator! 3 alternators later, I NEED HELP! ON MY HEAD TEMP SENSOR, I TESTED IT WITH THIS CHEAP MULTIMETER & I BELEIVE IM GETTING 12V ON 1 WIRE & 5V ON THE SECOND WIRE. I AM GOING TO TRY RUNNING THEM EACH TO A TOGLE SWITCH & TRY TO CYCLE THEM THAT WAY BUT, BY BREAKING THE CIRCUIT, WHEN THE FANS COME ON, THE TEMP GUAGE STOPS WORKING SO, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE MY TEMP WHEN THE FANS HOPEFULLY RUN. I DONT HAVE THE MONEY RIGHT NOW TO ORDER NEW FANS, TO SEE IF THAT IS THE FIX SO, I NEED TO TRY SOMETHING ELSE & YOU SEEM TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR DOING. ITS EARLY MORNING NOW BUT, I THINK MY RELAYS ARE THE "TRAIN TRACK SET UP THAT YOU DID WITH 87A. I AM GOING TO CHECK OUT YOUR CHNL & SUBSCRIBE! I NEED THE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I really like the 3 relay setup, is that how Nelson Preformance harness is made? And big question, do you know if the Dakota pac-2750 controller will work with the 3 relay setup? It has the two negative pin low and high setup, but they show it on a two relay setup where one fan goes on high at low pin, the other fan goes on high at high pin. Really need to know!! Great video. Never knew about the 2 speed and was about to gamble on the Derale which has horrible reviews. I have their version of your FL210 (have had them also worked for many years). The ones have now pull just under 25 amps ea and had issues w every auto controller ( Hayden 👎🏻) so just had manual switch’s to HD relays but I’ll be adding one more to slow them down. I’ve sucked one to many birds into my grill on high😂🤦🏻‍♂️

    Hey Chris, I need to put an override on/off toggle switch on the + wire coming out of my electric fan.
    I'm wanting to connect it there because it's after the thermostatic switch that detects hot Temps in radiator so the fan turns on at 205°F. So it doesn't effect the fan temp switch and can just manually turn on the fan when I'm setting in stop n go traffic or have AC on while idling.
    I was going to power the on/off toggle switch from the fuse box under dash so it only has power when key is on or car is running. The on/off switch is on the positive line that goes to the fans + wire.
    How do I connect a relay to this while not effecting temp switch turning on fan when hot and still have the ability to send power to fan from manual toggle switch independently but switch only being power by key on

    I never knew running fans in series cuts the speed in half. I usually run one fan with a 3ohm resistor for low speed. I've used flexalite in the past don't much like them. There whicked expensive I've spent 400 on a fan setup that's nuts when you can get a better fan setup from a salvage yard for next to nothing. That fan controller you have is crazy priced a few relays neatly packed fuck that.

    Thanks so much for posting this Chris. I also installed the two speed, three relay option on my 76' Ford truck. I used three 16" fans two pushers and one puller with a shroud. The trucks stays on low speed with all three fans most of the time and you can barely hear them running. The high speed kick in however, is a different story. I used a dashpot from a 79 carb which is wired to the middle relay 87a and kicks my idle speed up when the three fans go to high speed. I also ran 86 on the first relay to the ignition switch and the fans turn off with the key. Thanks again!!

I need to know which one is my cooling fan because my A/C DOESN'T WORK ANYWAYS. I JUST NEED MY COOLING FAN TO WORK! I planned on disconnecting the a/c fan & running a toggle or 2 on my head temp sensor wires(2 wires- 1 is 12v & the other is 5v reference I think?) to make the fan run, so, if I find out which is the cooling fan & which is the a/c fan, I will disconnect the a/c fan & run toggles on the cylinder head temp sensor wires to make the fan run 4 now. I REALLY HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME OUT?

    I was wondering if you could clear something up for me. Wouldn't using a 4 pin relay work the same way as using a 5 pin relay, being that you wouldn't have the need to use the extra wire going into 87a. My understanding is 87a is just a "rest" you could say, before the connection is established between 30 and 87. In other words, what purpose does the wire going into 87a have?

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  5 лет назад

      On a 5 pin power is either going to 87a or to 87 ( think high beam and low beam headlights) sort of a single pole double throw ... 4 pin is just a single pole single throw switch.. people use a 5 pin where they don’t need it so many times because they don’t know what they are doing .. like all over RUclips

    I know I'm electrically challenged, but I still can't wrap my head around why the switch works on the post-relay side of the circuit, vs. being on the pre-relay side. It seems like it would need the toggle switch on the pre side to allow the positive charge to hit the relay and trigger the switch. Does this make any difference having the charge waiting at the relay? Cool video and detailed explanations!

    Hey Chris,
    Your video on HI/Low fan control wiring is the best I've found anywhere. I do have one question though, how would I tie my ECM to this ? The ecm is a E38 and has a "fan 1" ground signal and a "fan 2" ground signal. I would like to have the ECM have control over the fans and use a vintage air trianary switch for like fan one, then for fan two use a 200° temp switch. Can I just wire one of each of the ground signal wires from the ECM to each relay in your diagram in place of the "180° " or fan one ?? And the other in place of the 200° Help a brother out man I'm struggling over here... lol

    Second fan can be powered by the AC switch like a regular wiring harness.

    Awesome video even if its was 2017, Thanks! My problem for my truck is that it won't turn on. Checked and replaced all the relays and controller. Even the coolant sensor. Now I'm stumped. Fan still won't turn on(the 2fans do work and the wiring). If I unplugged the coolant sensor, the computer thinks the engine is hot, both fans kick on. If I plug the wiring to the sensor back, the fans stop. I've recently replaced the thermostat too, the temperature reads correctly at 210. I can't find any solutions.

    Chris, I'm trying to find information about how to install dummy LED indicator lights to my dash from my dual electric fans. I've been told to break into the hot wire on the fans . But, that's 25 amp at load. How would you recommend a safe wiring option? And thank you for so many awesome videos on wiring. I'm a grandma or three and rewiring my CJ7 for the first time all by myself. I really want to do this right! And your videos have been AMAZING!

    Hi Chris I have recently brought a 12volt 5 pin 100 Amp Relay unit & I was wondering if the 100 Amp Relay would suite a electric radiator cooling fan & the the electric fan that I will buying at a later date is a 90 Watt electric fan motor & the Electric Cooling Fan is 14" & has 2500 CFM from AliExpress Store for NZ $81.02 which I think it is a quite a reasonable price & I have a 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf with a 3.4V6 engine & what fan I have at the moment is those clutch fans & I dont like these fans at all & go all out for an electric radiator cooling fan & having 2500 CFM rating should be fine for the 3.4V6 engine & the fan 14" electric fan has curved fan blades however I asked the the Seller if you can get this 14" electric fan with straight flat blades & apparently you can buy this electric 14" with the straight fan blades which they are a lot better air flow than the curved bladed electric fans & however they are a little bit noisier than the curved bladed electric fans & that wouldn't worry me & the electric fan will draw air through the radiator which more efficient again than force air through the radiator from the front of the radiator & that way the electric fan will force air over the engine as well & keeping other engine components Cool as well & having the clutch fan removed I will have heaps of room for the electric fan as the clutch fan has a long piece of metal to mount the clutch fan from the water pump & so all I have to do is put shorter bolts through the water pump to hold the pulley on & that way I will have even more room again for the electric fan & more air going over the engine as well & keep everything nice & cool & be far better than those clutch fans & anything goes wrong with those clutch fans they quite expensive to replace as well & so Chris would a 12V 5 pin 100 Amp Relay work ok for this fan unit Kind Regards Peter

    Has anyone tried this with a LS3 swap using the E38 ECM with fan 1 and fan two being the ground trigger for the relays ? It seemed to work fine but the ECM stopped sending ground trigger and threw DTC PO480... then both fans started running on hi on fan two request only. (@205°) I think its because the ECM is looking for voltages from the PWM fan module ??

      this is not for that .. you need relays with diodes and they are wired different

    • @jasonhull5712
      @jasonhull5712 2 года назад

      @@chriscraft77022 yes sir, took me a couple months of screwing around but I have the relays, I have 3. Also sourced the solder in diodes in case I needed more. The older ECMs from GM was so much more simpler.. the E38 ECMs are definitely not for the faint of heart. I ordered a dual speed dual fan upgrade harness from racetronics and it should be here Thursday. It's also wired with the proper relays they claim. I just want to see for myself. This has been the biggest pain in the ass. I should have just went with the Holley system or ponied up for the Haltech system. GM clearly didn't like us hopping up their Engine management systems... lol

    Are you using 10G from the breakers to relays also? Or just from battery to breaker?

    A bit confused. My 2 fans are very tiny (5 inch)and will pull about 6.5 amps each.theyre for an oil cooler. Its gonna be 1 relay since they draw low amps. I have a 30 amp circuit breaker to 30 on relay and both fans are wired into 87.
    So my question is would i be able to send power from the circuit breaker to 86 and have the toggle switch just be connected to the 85(ground)?

    • @chriscraft77022

      @@chriscraft77022 well shit thanks chris!
      another small question. I got a water pump that draws 3.9amps. I want to wire a toggle switch onto that. Do you think its alright to just wire the switch into that without a relay since its very low amps? or do you recommend a relay for that?
