Alonzo, in his own twisted way, developed a soft spot for Jake and wanted him in his unit. When Jake refused to kill Roger nor would he take the money, Alonzo realized he was incorruptible and a liability and made up his decision to kill him. But then Jake was able to take Alonzo’s gun and it was too late to kill him then and there without raising too many questions, hence we find out later he paid the Hispanic gang to kill him.

He’s talked about how most of his friends from childhood are dead or in jail. He talks about having his parents together and good family structure being the biggest difference. He’s such a smart and talented man.
Stopping in the middle of the intersection was the most genius part of the plan. It created a sense of urgency and pressure for Jake to just “get It over with” so they could get on with their day and stop blocking traffic, like when you are dealing with a pushy salesperson and finally relent. Alonzo might be saying “forget about It, you missed your chance it’s over”, but the people screaming and blaring their horns are subconsciously applying the pressure for him. They’re effectively screaming “do It Jake!’ When Alonzo can’t sell It himself he masterfully switches tactics and ratchets up the anxiety in Jake to the point where taking a hit actually seems like the best option. The gun pointed at his head and the screaming people all around them are too much to handle, so he gives in. Even tho he knows it’s a bad decision, the situation Alonzo engineered has caused him so much distress he wants to end It any way he can.
