  • Landscape Photography | My Three Dawn Challenge:
It's been ages since I filmed a field based video and a recent holiday seemed like an ideal opportunity for a landscape photography challenge. In creating this challenge I decided upon three consecutive dawn rises and a constrained working area to see what I could come up with. I love this type of constraint in my photography as it helps me to focus on my immediate surrounding and stops me from wandering around aimlessly. Dawn is also my favourite time of day, so I am at my most sensitive to my surroundings and tend to interpret the details in the landscape more creatively.

I have hired canal boats on the Norfolk broads ( far less locks to deal with ) it’s by far the most relaxing holiday we have ever had and the photo opportunities are fantastic especially morning and evening! Glad you enjoyed it Simon.

      Hi Neil
I’ve also had a week on the Broads in previous years. In reflection, the waterways are considerably wider too. I recall worrying less about hitting something.

Too often, it seems the people who follow the really good photographers who vlog assume that every day, every place is just prime territory whenever and wherever you stop. After all, the 'subject' is always in place and all a photographer has to do is arrive, snap the photo, and go back to the posh van (or narrow boat). Right? There were years when I'd drive four hours, arrive for sunrise, and find nothing that seemed to warrant an exposure. Lots of trips later there might be one or two shots to show for all the time and work. Thanks for talking us through the process of "seeing" other possibilities and making something of them.

Silly Willow. Gives new meaning to the term "Lap(top) Dog." Challenging stuff, but you've pulled it off again! (And I must admit that with shots like this I have a friend who will toss handfuls of pebbles into the water to make pleasing conflicting ripples. The guy just has no dignity or respect.)

It was a great week Peter with three difficult photo sessions. I suspected they would be. The first morning that I mentioned was the best morning of the week and I missed it.

'Something from nothing' - well done Simon. I prefer the final image, although personally I might have gone for a slightly tighter crop to increase the focus somewhat on the trees in the background and their reflections. Good to see you back out with your camera.

Thanks for your comment Alan. I think crops in these instances are very much a personal choice as you say.

Hi Simon - I've been binge-watching your excellent videos and it occurred to me that perhaps you should consider producing a Woodland Photography Calendar identifying when the best dates are throughout the year for photographing ferns, wild flowers, pine cones, fungi etc. It would be really helpful as a guide to newbie woodland photographers like me. Keep up the good work!

Hi Dave, I thought this was a great idea but then I wondered if the channel itself does this to some degree. My films are nover out more than two weeks after they are filmed, so the back catalogue should be a good point of reference.

Excellent video. I guess which image is best is a very personal choice and also whether there should be figures in the cmposition etc to me misses the point as surely we all need to be individuals and produce what we believe to be the best images there is no absolute right or wrong. What I like about your presentations is that you explain your thought processes about how you plan and formulate the compositions. Something I personally find very difficult to achieve. Keep up the excellent work of helping us all to improve our skills.

Too late Brett, I'm already booked in for another OP in May. It seems I have been unlucky and the damn thing failed again...typical!

@@SimonBoothPhotography ahh. That’s a shame. Sorry to hear that Simon. Some of us just have weak muscles prone to tears. I’m a three time vet of the surgery.
How about I move to The UK and I’ll be your camera bag caddy and in return, you can teach me all you know? You don’t have a heavy bag to carry around and risk further tears and I get the education of a lifetime. 😉

Nice having you back teaching!! Great stuff as always.
By the way, what tripod do you use? I am looking to get a heavier duty one. Thanks!

I've just recently moved over to Kingjoy. The C85 to be specific. It's a lovely piece of kit.

Simon, the image was nice but my opinion is that shadowy figure midway through the image on the right would of made the photo perfect; a figure walking away from the camera. Another option would of been a shadowy figure again on the right side walking away from the camera but much closure to the camera. My first opinion I feel would of done it but again, your scene was very nice but the person would of been the cherry on top. I can’t believe this is the first composition I have thought was not great for you!

Hi Greg, I mentioned the option of the figure. I knew there’d be some who would prefer that to an empty path. I’m not really a fan of people in my images but I do get why some would.

@@SimonBoothPhotography Simon, I know you mentioned your lack of people in your photos and that’s the way you like your photos but may I suggest (if you possible have a person available to use as a model or you could do a composite with you in it) you try doing one and submit and ask our opinion? I think it might be interesting. I know you are the photographer and you post what you like but I know you also post and explain what you are doing to help your readers learn from you, right? You and your trees have taught me a lot and I look forward to your posts and was concerned when you got I’ll and needed surgery. I would love to see your style include maybe a recommendation from your followers.

just curiously, do you pick a vacation spot based on photography and bring your wife along, or do you pick a vacation spot and then figure out how to take photographs?

I never plan locations anymore. I’ve learned over the years that as long as it’s somewhere natural, I can always find something. The large scenes are always nice to have but I don’t mind grand vistas or small scenes. I find all equally satisfying.

Great to see you back out again Simon. You have truly inspired me to look further when an image isn’t immediately obvious. I love all three of your images but number three is the one I would love to have taken!!
