Hello SEO pros! Google is back with its September 2023 helpful content update, and it's a game-changer for content creators and website owners. In this video, we break down what it means for you and how you can adapt for improved performance.
🚀 Key Highlights:
⬩ Improved Classifier: Google is rolling out an enhanced classifier for its helpful content system. The rollout will span approximately two weeks, and the ranking release history page will be updated once completed.
⬩ How the Helpful Content System Works: Google's aim is to prioritize content that offers visitors a satisfying experience. This system automatically flags content with low value or content that isn't valuable to users. Remember, this is just one of the many signals Google uses to rank content.
⬩ Potential Impact on Your Site: If your site has a lot of unhelpful content, it might not fare well in search results. If you host third-party content, ensure it aligns with your site's purpose or consider blocking it from being indexed.
⬩ Optimizing for the Update: If you're already producing valuable content, you're on the right track! But if you've seen a traffic dip, it's time to reassess and refine your content. We share tips on how to do this effectively in the video.
📌 Important Takeaway: Removing unhelpful content can boost the rankings of your other content. The classifier process is automated and operates globally. It's neither a manual nor a spam action.
⏳ If you're wondering about recovery time after removing unhelpful content, remember that this system evaluates sites over several months. But with continuous improvements and staying true to creating people-first content, your site can bounce back stronger!

Hey Nathan thanks for the amazing video and your valuable points. By any chance can you share the prompt in google doc or something which you shared in the video.
@@paarthsharma90 hey you know about backlinks
I went to 14 different buffets and my scale says I’m ranking pretty high!

My experiences with Google....
1. Do everything suggested in this video
2. Hope for the best
3. Be open to the possibility that my site might get thrashed even though I did #1 perfectly
That possibility is always there for sure, but authority can decrease risk
All "expert advice" is crap. You're on point. You put in the hard work, you get thrashed, this video gets thrashed. Then Naresh comes around with an awesome AI recipe, makes 300k in 2 months, gets deleted. Then Imam steps by, builds an automated blog on top of an aged domain, banks 1 mil. in 6 months, gets thrashed. Then Mike Bombastic steps by, publishes 100 parasite articles x 800 a piece, makes 5 mil. in 6 months, gets thrashed. What do you get with satisfying the intent and spending on your article? Leftovers. Then Google comes around with some shitty HCU, or Core, and you get thrashed for no reason. Together with Imam and Naresh. News outlets under hedge funds umbrellas get to survive. Who makes the money? The corporations behind. Employees are still to be paid and get rich. I'm pretty fed up with white hat SEO and expert advice. What works is money SEO, citing someone I don't like, don't respect, but seems to have forged the expression.
This is such a great video. That sleep calculator website is A+. The branding, the layout, the multiple forms of content/media.
I love when you're talking about GA4 and the person is showing drinks on the screen. Yup, SEO makes me drink sometimes too!
Everything is clear. Brief and clear. No water. Thank you)
Gotch is an underated SEO guru
From my experience, no matter what you do, a DA 80+ site come up with even crappy articles, Google will rank them. Period.
It's true, website authority is a huge ranking factor
That's a MOZ metric system and is very true, however getting these links is almost impossible for the average website to achieve as these sites are news sites etc.
Appreciate the non-fluff straightforward approach. Was a great review for me. Thank you!
Very informative. Thanks!
What was the chat gpt prompt you used?
Awesome video !
Chat GPT part is gold! Thanks a lot for sharing!
👍👍
This is great content, as always. But how do you do this on scale? If you’re running an editorial site, lots of news, guides, and reviews, it’s so hard to go into this level of detail for every post, every small keyword that adds to topical depth.
In my experience, you can't, and doing things at scale is what is destroying so many websites.
Amazing video 🙂
Thanks for another great vid!
At 3:34 you state "have 0 BACKlinks from ahrefs"
Did you mean to include referring domains as showed or backlinks as told?
Thank you! That's correct - looking for pages that have zero referring domains
Thank you for the great content once again. I have a big question. I want to go link fishing and use a statistics piece as bait. As this is the first time I am publishing a pure statistics piece, do I have to publish it as a page or as a post?
Thanks
Good stuff man. Love the idea of studying content that you KNOW is really helpful to help you with your own content.
Is there another way to do that report that isn't SF? It's over 200 for the year and I only have one small website I want to fix.
Thank you for providing authentic info. Appreciated
The saying Content is King is absolutely correct
Great content
I needed this. Thank you.
Hi Nathan
where can i get chatgpt prompts which are you mentioned in this video
You never miss 🔥
Can you make video about how to outline article manual ?
Love the idea example for the original content piece in #2. Exactly how it should be done.. go the extra mile while no one else will.. you’ll be rewarded for it
Glad to hear that! 💪
100% agree. I read over 300 pages of a (boring) government department report to pull out valuable stats. Links just kept coming in naturally
Present ❤
Great tips! Very actionable and nicely presented. Thanks Nathan!
Very informative
Das Video ist großartig und informativ!
Can you please share the chat gpt prompt you showed in the video?
Excellent video! However, I guess you also cannot explain why Google ranks now (after this HCU) so many articles on page one, which aren't at all what they want (thin content, generic, using stock photos, outdated etc.), while a lot of really helpful content (unique, first-hand experience, etc) dropped to page 2. I can only speak for travel (my niche), but it's definitely the case now. Really, the only explanation I came up with: Google wants shorter content, less in-depth, etc content.. because that crap (sorry) ranks well now.
Thank you! I actually agree that the results aren't better after the update
The update has nothing to do with what's discussed in the video .. This upsdate is all about EEAT and Branding .. basically all the blogs are getting crushed but the real businesses are getting rewarded. the larger your brand your brand the better you fare..small brands may be able to outrank big brands with better content but if you have no branding whatsoever (eg. a typical blogger) you have no shot... that's why all the niche sites are getting crushed.
Agreed. One of my best posts got crushed and a 24 year old forum post is third. Ridiculous.
@jerry, how does Google know what is true expertise and authority? Imo, it just defers to links, which is why the big sites are prevailing. I have been a uscg licensed Capt in FL since 1985 written several books, I got crushed.
@@captjimusfl multiple signals.. all that info should be on your website..on your homepage even clearly visible..and it should also be off of your website..social media, podcast, other platforms .. people searching for your brand etc ..
This makes me just want to start door to door knocking.
Hi, Can you also make a video & share prompts for ChatGpt & GPT4. Would really love it. Thanks
Thanks for the video! Loved it very much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The reference pages you mentioned are great for user experience.
But I think this type of content is suitable for a blog post, but what about a service page?
How to optimize service pages.
Google gives importance to high quality content, but then how come pages with short content still rank on top in Google?
We do pretty well for a service site 👇
And this video appeared on my home page, and I watched it
And also this video is useful
Glad to hear that!
Really helpful video. I'm particularly interested in those tools like the slider one for the TV. It's given me an idea for my content but I have no idea how to create them. Do you have a tutorial for it or know of a good one?
Thank you! Try using ChatGPT: ruclips.net/video/I5q_QesBnsM/видео.htmlsi=8H6Gl5YZReEF0EUA
As a healthcare professional, is it a good idea to start a blog in that niche or is it too late? Considering YLYM and EEAT algorithm updates?
If you have subject matter expertise and can write well, then go for it. But make you niche down to find an uncompetitive sector within healthcare
@@nathangotch so is being a physician considered an advantage/expertise in the eyes of Google’s algorithms and can help your blog rank?
@@maminoo50do your own research bro. Thats important in seo
@@user-yo9jo2fy5e definitely, I’ve been doing my research for a long time but can’t find accurate answers
How do you export Sessions, Impressions, and Referring Domains in one report on Screaming Frog??
"Internal" tab > Export. This will export all of the data from the crawl
@@nathangotch Thank you!
Great content, thanks. However, I think many people don't pay enough attention to search intent. If you want to rank a blog for a certain search term, but Google is only showing e-commerce sites in the top positions, you have no chance of achieving top rankings. Even if you write the best content ever and build an outstanding backlink profile, you still won't rank.
Thank you and I agree!
I am unable to rank my site, I have active adsense
I just started creating videos exclusively for my website but it’s really heartbreaking that I don’t get any phone calls yet 😢
Don't sweat it. Google is a slow burner. Do everything correct. Check your Console, check analytics and go from there.
Its all about math, as Korey says... not going to buffets
Thanks for the comment!
Can you share your math equation for ranking #1 in Google?
The funny thing is I got a D in Algebra 2 in high school. So, how have I led hundreds of successful SEO campaigns over the last ten years despite being terrible at math?
Because I focus on what humans want. And math doesn't work in this case because it's 100% based on qualitative concepts.
So you're right in regards to algorithms being built based on math.
But humans determine what's helpful by linking to content, engaging with it, or sharing it. Algorithms react to those signals. So, if you don't know how to generate those signals, then no amount of math will matter.
Have a nice day!
Sure. E equals MC squared 😉
Is that book in the background your book? What's it called and where do I find it?

SEO is getting harder each day
So concentrate on user experience and create pillar content that's useful and makes you look authoritative.
@@mobileleatherrepairsukWhats pillar content?
One of the ways I handle SEO updates is to ignore them. I know I'm doing genuinely good stuff on my page for my users and there's nothing that can be done beyond that.
That’s a good mentality to have!
Yep. It's easy to get obsessed with them.
Been doing this for years and in 24hrs this update took well over half my traffic across all pages…
Sorry to hear and you’re not alone. It’s been a pretty damaging update with some weird outcomes. All I can say is I’ve seen this before. Google has launched many failed updates that didn’t make the search results better and has reversed them. That’s why it’s best to avoid overcorrecting. And instead, just upgrade what you’re doing because there’s always room for improvement
Same here, and crappy websites pushed up
Help Help Help...if u don't make google look good by helping their users with your content they wont make you rank no matter what you do ..simple
I agree, content is the foundation. But the truth is that you can create "helpful" content all day, but if you don't have backlink support, it likely won't matter. In other words, backlinks determine what's "helpful."
@@nathangotch If the content is Ultra Good and Helpful others will always link Back to it..true story🤞
I want to weigh on this backlink debate. I have a new site, less than 6 months, it's ranking above news websites for certain keywords, and even winning featured snippets. With zero backlinks.
@@iocfaith you're in the honeymoon period :)
