When you mention re-uploading the same pictures from articles to reflect the new dates in the URL, what happens to the older ones? Would it be best to delete them, create a 301 redirect, keep them in the WP library, consider using a CDN image service, or even create a new custom location folder for future images (for example: ...uploads/2023/08/example.jpg -> ...uploads/custom-folder/example.jpg)?
It's quite a challenge, especially with thousands of images.
Unless they have existing backlinks, then I'd delete them to reduce resource load. If they do have backlinks, then 301 redirect
