Hi there! After 16 years away, is there any chance that you’d come back? My kids struggled at first as they missed friends and family terribly. 3 years later, and now they are happy with the school and have adapted well to island life. Of course, nowhere in the world is perfect, but we make the best of what we have - and Mauritius is certainly a great option :)
@@LucyLeheilleix Thanks for the quick reply. We are from South Africa and there is a possibility that my husband might get a job offer to work in Mauritius. I watched more this morning, and really enjoyed the view into Mauritian life you gave.
Hi there. Some schools are very good indeed, but can be pricey. There are government and private schools. The best known: Bocage, Northfields, Ecole du Centre, West Coast, Clavis, Alexandra House, Lycee Labourdonnais and Telfair. I hope that helps?
I live in uk and I'm 10 but my dad has to move to mauritius and that means so do I and I have to leave my best friend behind and I've been crying for weeks
I’m sorry to hear that you’re so sad to leave your friends. My kids and I were also very sad to leave our friends in South Africa. My two girls are the same age as you and they have made lots of great friends here. You can still keep in touch with your besties from here and I bet you’ll make new buddies very quickly. Best of luck :)
Hi Lucy. Been watching loads of your videos now.. thank you so much for making them! It's making our decision to move to Mauritius a very informed one :-) In a thread below, you mentioned the new 1 Year Visa; is this the new "Premium Visa"? Which seems to be aimed at digital nomads/remote workers? Because we are considering our move to Mauritius with our 2 children (1 adult child aged 22 and our 12 yr old) and my husband works remotely for a large multinational company. So we'd likely be applying for this visa and wondered if you knew anything about it..? Also; my son is currently home-schooled here in the UK and we'd like to continue this. I got conflicting reports for a while but think I have managed to confirm that home-schooling IS possible so long as we enrol him in an accredited online school eg Cambrilearn. Do you have any experience with this or know anyone on Mauritius who is home-schooling? Lastly; my son and my husband absolutely LOVE basketball! Do you know if there are any basketball clubs/courts/sports centres around on the island? My husband coaches the local basketball team here and he'd love to continue with this. Thank you.
Hello! Thanks for the comment! Yes it is possible to home school. As you say, best to go with an accredited online school. The premium visa is a great way to get a taste of island life and then decide later how you would like to proceed. Basketball is available in many of the schools and gyms. Perhaps a question for mauritius in motion on Facebook? Do email me if you need further assistance 😀
Thanks Anjelo. The fees can vary, but on average it’s 5%. It’s always possible to buy without an agent too. Fee is usually paid by the buyer, but it’s misleading as it’s kinda hidden in the final property sale price (if you get my drift?)
@@LucyLeheilleix Merci, j'ai déduit avec que vous étiez française avec la façon dont vous prononcez les mots français, sinon impossible de faire la différence avec une anglaise, your english is so brilliant 👍👍👍👍
Hi Lucy, great vlog, thanks. We're looking at moving to Mauritius from S.Africa because of the usual reasons. Is the island also suitable for retirees? Looking at housing to buy: it's noticeable that more reasonably-priced properties are for Mauritians only.. How much would a couple in their 60's need to live/month? On the pet relocation forms I noticed Boerboels are not wanted! :-( I guess because it's safe one doesn't need protection from your home pets. I was there once in the 90's, have good memories. My wife's never been so we need to take a look, but it's so hard to find out when normal travel will be possible again. Any (insider) info on the situation for December or January?
Hi there! You are right, local properties are vastly cheaper than for expats. Now with the new tax rate, this will have to change or many people will leave. Mauritius is an expensive place to live, so I expect the government will try to salvage the situation (and with covid) bring out more attractive offerings (like the new one year visa). Every household is different, so I can’t tell you what your budget needs to be. This also greatly depends where you live. They are strict with importing dogs, best speak to Mr Hurry: 23052568113 All of the best.
@@LucyLeheilleix Missed your reply, thank you. Obviously everyone has different needs, I'd need a decent internet connection, basic foods and a quiet area. Wife needs Woolies foods and the chance to help people in need (Rotarian) LOL. What's the connection between budget and where you live? Jon
thanks alot for this video. I live in egypt and working as general Practitioner doctor. I am thinking seriously to immigrate to this pretty island but is it easy to find ajob
Hi Lucy, Love your vlog - please keep up the great work. My name is Pat Lenferna de la Motte, married to a Mauritian and we are seriously contemplating immigrating to Mauritius to retire. How is the health plans there? Are the hospitals good - I see the specialist did a super job on your knee? Very impressive- oh well, please keep up the very interesting and informative vlogs - warm regards, pat
Hi Pat. Thanks for your lovely comment. There are some fairly good health plans here and the two main hospitals are Darne and Wellkin. I was lucky with my knee as we happen to have one of the top French surgeons living here, but healthcare in general is questionable - most people head to RSA, France or Reunion for serious medical conditions. Good luck with your move over here.
Hi Hi, lovely info, well I was never in Mauritius but i am sure i want to end my life there as my pension will be in 3 years. Can I trust somebody to buy an apartment without seeing it....as it is impossible for me to leave south-africa where I work since 12 years now and being European (Belgian) from origin.
Hi Gilbert. If you know someone here, then ask them to look around at places for you. Otherwise I highly recommend you see places for yourself. Good luck.👍
@@LucyLeheilleix good eve Lucy, no besides you lol and a banker (I opened already a local account), i do not know anybody, sometimes the places look so brilliant that you wanna order even 'on plan',scared to miss out..., but yes I think I will wait and listen to youre good advice and visit first. You and youre videos make me even more 'hungry' lol, thanks a lot for that.
@@LucyLeheilleix sorry my question wasn't quite clear. After these 3 years of occupation permit (as a self-employed) it can be renovated to keep working and living in the island?
Hi - Excellent informative video. You have gained a subscriber. I would be interested to know in general where do most of the expats (ie those that spend a few months a year or those that may spend all year there) in Mauritius come from? I know there are many South Africans but are there many Europeans? If so, in general where to they come from? Would it be a good place to practice French ie do many people speak it in reality or is it mostly Creole and English?
Hi Ross, Thanks for supporting the channel. Regarding your question, there are mostly South Africans, French, Russians and British people living here, but of course I also know of Americans and Australians too (and people from other countries). The main languages spoken here are French, Creole and English. My experience here is that speaking a bit of French and Creole goes a long way :) All of the best to you!
Hello Lucy, i love your videos. My family and I are planning on relocating to Mauritius under the premium visa. One of the requirements is health and travel insurance. Is there a fixed amount or is therea range and how do I pay for it. Thanks
Hi Uche. Thanks for the comment. If you can afford it, I’d strongly advise a health cover that is internationally recognized in case you need medical assistance else where. There isn’t a fixed amount and Payment would likely be by eft. If you need more advice, feel free to email me: lucyleheilleix@gmail.com
My mum is from Mauritius. I was born is UK. I lived in Mauritius for 5year when I was younger with my mums family. I am thinking of relocating back when Im slightly older. I work in a primary school now with 15 years experience. How would I go about looking for a teaching assistant job in an english school please?
Great idea to come back! I guess you’d have to email your cv or resumé to a few schools and see if you get any interest. Hopefully things will get better here in the next few month (with regards to Corona virus). Good luck 🍀
Hi There and thank you for this video. My family and I are considering moving to Africa but saw this video and this is a great place to start research. I am a surgical Assistant and was wondering would it be easy to find a job? What are the closest hospitals near Grand Baie and Tamarin. What is the cost of living there as well?
Hi Zermorah. I don't think it would be too difficult to find work as a surgical assistant. It's not my field, so you'd have to find out. The main hospitals are Wellkin and Darne, both in central Mauritius. Cost of living here is very high as everything is Euro / Dollarized and rent is high (as is food as it's mostly imported). Good luck :)
Hi. What an amazing insight to relocating to this amazing Island. Will it be ok if you can explain what visa or if I can get a visa if I wanted to relocate and open a restaurant/ coffee shop. Do you think I will need a self employed visa as I will have employees. Your help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks so much Khuram. You will need a self employed visa for that line of work. Do check out the edb website as it offers lots of info there. If you’re looking for an agent, try Navim and mention that I forwarded you his details. gojobsgate@gmail.com Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you. :)

I work in import/export and I know in some countries if you ship your belonging to relocate there is a duty extemption. Do Mauritius customs apply duties? Thanks for the precise video.
Hello Vincenza. You’d have to check with whoever’s doing your removals for you as they would liaise directly with the government and organize the import permit. Check out: www.mcci.org/en/inside-mauritius/imports-exports/guide-to-import/
Hi Lucy. We are doing some research on emigrating to Mauritius and your video blogs are really informative. One thing I worry about is how dog friendly is Mauritius? We have 5 small dogs that are our children. Are they allowed at beaches and stuff?
Hi Lauren. Mauritius has a lot of street dogs, but there are people who are trying to curb the problem and who offer shelters and sterilisation programmes. It took me a long time to get used to seeing homeless dogs on virtually every street corner. It is possible to bring your dogs here (we have a dog) but it does require time and effort. The people at the quarantine in Reduit were so lovely....and yes, dogs are absolutely allowed on beaches :)
@@LucyLeheilleixThere are a lot of social workers who are struggling to curb the problem near the governments and to create campaigns so as to sensitize the population and support will be most welcome :)♥

Hi there! I highly recommend living here, although what it's going to be like post covid-19 is anyone's guess. Your question about jobs I guess depends on what field you work in? Normally I'd say it's easier to come here already with a job in hand. Take care and stay safe.
You're right, Mauritius is expensive. It's euro and dollar based, so the prices are similar to the sort of prices you'd expect in Europe. For property which affords you a residence permit, you have to spend at least $500k. Which sector do you work in?
Thank you for this guide! How do you go about getting a residence permit to Mauritius Africa? Also, what is the cost of living and what are rental prices like there?
Hi there. Check out the edb website as the laws have recently changed. Also l’express.mu is the place to look for property. Mauritius is an expensive jurisdiction, but like everywhere, there are expensive and not as expensive areas to live. Take care :)
We will be relocating to Mauritius in 2021 God willing. And found your channel very helpful. Just one question. Is there pet friendly accommodation to rent as we'll be bring our babies over?
I do have a question regarding the spouse topic. My partner and I have a daughter, but aren't married. Would she still be recognized or would only my daughter be granted a permit as a dependent if I buy a property and aquire a residency permit?
Hello, can I ask you if you know something about average salaries at the IT sector on Mauritius? I mean is there a difference between working for an international company based on Mauritius or for domestic one? Is there a chance to catch job as a software developer or domestic companies prefer to hire someone from locals? (If they protect the job market for locals as a first option).
I don't work in IT, so I don't know much about it, but I reckon you may be paid better if you work as an expat compared to being employed by a local company. There is a certain element of job protection for locals, but if you have skills that are needed, there is no reason why you wouldn't find work. Mauritius is a good place to come if you're in IT as I believe they are market leaders in Africa.
I am a Software Engineer working in Mauritius (telecommunications). Salary have different ranges but a local can expect >1700 USD per month. But if you are an expat you will get much more, they will have to pay some allowances like housing etc. A good place to start looking for jobs is myjob.mu (www.myjob.mu/ShowResults.aspx?Keywords=&Location=&Category=39). If you can find a company outside Mauritius and allow working remotely you can get very good salary - cause income tax is 15% flat. Some of my friends does this and work with a co. based in US. Not sure this is possible for you though since you will need a local job as well. For your last question, there is a severe shortage of workforce for software developers particularly, companies take a lot of expats. A lot from Madagascar. I used to work with colleagues who was Hungarian and German.
I am planning to relocate to Mauritius as my partner is Mauritian however I am REALLY concerned about my dogs adapting to the climate! I am currently in the UK where the whether is, to put it politely, rubbish. I’m happy with the process of getting them there however I’m worried about them going from uk weather to hot tropics! I’m not sure whether you had that problem as you moved from South Africa but do you have any tips for keeping them cool and helping them as it’s my biggest worry about moving to this beautiful island!
Hi Ellie. It is indeed hot for dogs here, but they will adapt. Mine just get hot very quickly (after walks) but then they rest, drink lots of water and all is fine. Don’t worry, they’ll be great 😀
I like this so much as I have been trying to relocate there since 2013. I can see names of schools to phone! Fantastic. How do people come to work in Mauritius? I had just about given up on finding work as I'm unable to speak French and 'Mon pakinay kreole' . I've been driving myself mad not knowing to do a PGCE or to just turn up and look for a welding job .
Hi Adi. Regarding the French aspect of the island, yes it is an advantage if you can speak the language. That said though, I know many people who don't speak a word of French or Creole. Job advice would be to look on the following sites: myjob.mu careerhub.mu yelo.mu Good luck!

Hopefully that will be possible very soon.
Thank you for all this information. Do you perhaps know anything about homeschooling in Mauritius?
Hello! Yes, homeschooling is very much a thing. All kids are currently homeschooling on the island due to covid 🥳 Where are you from?
@@LucyLeheilleix Thanks for the quick reply. We are from South Africa and there is a possibility that my husband might get a job offer to work in Mauritius. We have always homeschooled our two boys (gr.6-8), and would really like to continue doing so.

Very informative 💞

Hi Lucy - thanks for your tips - we have researched the local international schools (secondary re: IB)...are they well regarded?
Hi there. Some schools are very good indeed, but can be pricey. There are government and private schools. The best known: Bocage, Northfields, Ecole du Centre, West Coast, Clavis, Alexandra House, Lycee Labourdonnais and Telfair. I hope that helps?
Hi Lucy, can you make a video of the most recent requirements, August 2020, for a move to Mauritius from Sa please? Thanks, A. Cape Town.
Hello there. Make sure to check out the edb website as changes have been made with covid. All of the best!

Do you know how different is their French from Canadian French?
Sorry I don’t. I think if you spoke Canadian French, while certain phrases may be different, you would certainly be able to communicate 👍🏻
I’m researching the living expenses currently. How to go about gaining the permit. I’d love to relocate here or possibly Mahe
Good luck Nicole. Check out l’expressproperty for info on rentals. It’s quite expensive here....

@@LucyLeheilleix ...but it's still 30-50% cheaper than the Seychelles it seems.. :-)
Amazing video Lucy... Do you know what is average real estate agent fee? Should both parties bare it or only the owner?
Thanks Anjelo. The fees can vary, but on average it’s 5%. It’s always possible to buy without an agent too. Fee is usually paid by the buyer, but it’s misleading as it’s kinda hidden in the final property sale price (if you get my drift?)
@@LucyLeheilleix thanks so much.. Was looking to rent
For renting it’s usually one months rent as deposit and then the rent. I thought you were asking about buying as you mentioned fees…

Hi Besho. As a doctor you should have no problem finding a job. Good luck 👍
Hello, i suggest you to get the job before coming but it might not be that difficult to get one with your qualifications 😉
Hi Lucy,
Love your vlog - please keep up the great work.
Good luck.👍

From your question, do you require help coming to Mauritius?
@@LucyLeheilleix sorry my question wasn't quite clear. After these 3 years of occupation permit (as a self-employed) it can be renovated to keep working and living in the island?
You can extend yes. Up to 10 years.
Hello!! Do you have any idea of how easy it is to find a room in a shared house/apartment? Thank you!
Hello. Perhaps at the university’s there’d be notice boards for that sort of thing. Also try l’expressproperty.mu for rentals.
Hi Ross,
Thanks for supporting the channel.
Regarding your question, there are mostly South Africans, French, Russians and British people living here, but of course I also know of Americans and Australians too (and people from other countries).
The main languages spoken here are French, Creole and English. My experience here is that speaking a bit of French and Creole goes a long way :)
All of the best to you!

Hi there! I highly recommend living here, although what it's going to be like post covid-19 is anyone's guess. Your question about jobs I guess depends on what field you work in? Normally I'd say it's easier to come here already with a job in hand. Take care and stay safe.
So basically, you should have loads of cash if you want to relocate there. Let's say you buy property, what would do to maintain a decent lifestyle?
You're right, Mauritius is expensive. It's euro and dollar based, so the prices are similar to the sort of prices you'd expect in Europe. For property which affords you a residence permit, you have to spend at least $500k. Which sector do you work in?

Lucy Leheilleix thank you very much for your quick answer. One more question pls, so which type of visa I need to live on Mauritius as an IT expat?
You'll need to get an Occupational Permit or work visa. Your employer should be able to help you out with this.
Hello Marek, give mobimove.com a try.
Where do most of the United States expatriates live in Mauritius?
Hi Moa. We know a few who live in the Central Floreal region.

Don’t worry, they’ll be great 😀
Thankyou! We have a little river in the back garden so hopefully we can just let them cool off in there! Genuinely can’t wait to move!!
