You never want to put natural oils or mineral oil without additives on your chain! While it might run very well for some time, as soon as the temperature changes and the oil "ages" it will be almost useless. Some natural oils can be very corrosive as well.
Always buy something fully synthetic for a reasonable price (don't overpay for a 20ml bottle is what I mean). Industrial gearbox oils and engine oils will do a decent job if you need a lifetime supply for cheap. If you need a "normal" amount look at the finish line product range. While they are not cheap, at least they don't scam you like muc-off...
E: Really enjoying the series, keep it up dude!

I was doing a solo trip through New Zealand...I got into some really muddy trails and then couldn't fine chain lube nearby and my chain was getting pretty stiff. I had olive oil for cooking...worked great on the chain too! Sand sticks, but, better than a dry and stiff chain! On another trip into W. Virginia for some DH stuff I had a last minute brake issue....I had to do a bleed but didn't have any mineral oil(or was it dot5?). Olive oil! Yep...bled the line with olive oil for the rear brake, and despite the steep downhills and me being over 200 pounds...I had no issues

I've used canola oil on my bikes and it was okay, but in the extreme winter we have here in Canada it is not so great as it gets thicker. I always add a bit of graphite powder to my chain oil (a regular light oil, which is also cheap, used primarily for sewing machines and other household applications). The oil is light and penetrates the links well. The graphite is a dry lubricant and it does not get washed off as easily. I still wear out my chains, but they seem to last quite long.

You can try paraffin oil with paraffin wax, about half and half, depending on the type you have. Melt the wax over low heat, add the oil, mix, then dip the chain when it is very clean. A new chain should also be cleaned, soaking in solvent and cleaning with a towel works well. Of course it's for winter, in summer it doesn't last long. If you've got the right ratio it's the best thing you'll ever have, you won't have to renew it for months on end.

Some suggestions to remove grease from a dirty chain, I use mineral spirits or paint thinner. It works great. To remove rust I use apple cider vinegar, I believe it is less expensive than the acid you use, plus the vinegar is re-usable. Try it, and do not drink it, it is nasty. I also use synthetic motor oil, to lube parts and pivot points. I use motor oil to lube the chain. Any thoughts ?

I'm seeing lube applied both on the inside circumference (1st part where you had bottle below the cassette) and the outside circumference (2nd part where you had bottle above the cassette). FYI for readers, many others recommend only to apply lube to the inside circumference of the chain. I think the main reason is that centrifugal "force" pushes lube from the inside to the outside as the chain goes around, so better coating and maybe even a little unidirectional grime flush action.

It has 100 and a few links. I go one drop for each one, takes a couple of min but im sure all got lubbed penetrating inside.
    Then, clean excess, done.
To clean, if you want to be paranoid with it, after cleaning with benzine/petrol, degrass with cheap brake cleaner, that also ensures it comes out totally dry, ready for lube.

unleaded auto gas with a hi octane will work! as a auto mechanic use it to clean parts! it is aggressive at cleaning and super flammable! a alternative would be k1 kerosene as it has a low flammability and leaves a light oil coting. lighter fluid works to. interesting experiment!

Canola oil is the bad news for your bike chain. Yes, it is better than no lube at all, but worse than synthetic bicycle chain greases because it is acidic and will be eating your chain slowly which leads to a shorter life of your chain in the long run.

For cleaning it is much easier to use the Park Tools Cyclone chain scrubber with some citrus degreaser.

If you take care of the chain a lot, the canola oil might work.
I use Methanol to shake the chain from time to time. I like the Connex reusable quick links.

Pro tip: don't buy yourself a bike with $400+ worth cassette which is disposable material, sooner or later. Let sponsors buy your bike.

Q1 T not lubing chain is one of most expensive things to neglect on bike. Q2 Worn or lengthened chain will case wear to a. cassette and b. chain ring Q3 new chains from factory come with sticky wax or lube that can attract dirt best to clean it off the outer plates with degreaser. Looks like I will be buying some canola oil soon, or since I am Italian/American might have to conduct an olive oil experiment

Canola oil is natural. Just don’t drink it or water your plants with it. 😂

That's great! I use trumpet valve oil. If it's good enough for expensive valves, then it's good enough for a bike chain!
