Great work! Interestingly, I've used many different chainlubes over the years (Triflow, Progold, Finishline, R&R Extreme) but somehow I keep coming back to my 2 staples - Muc Off Dry Lube and R&R Gold. You definitely validated my unscientific albeit real world observations/experience. And of those 2, I definitely prefer the Muc off, but the R&R Gold I say I use more due to it's cheaper price! Great channel, glad I stumbled upon it!
I think in not classifying rock n roll gold as a dry lube he often overlooked letting it dry. It really should state on the bottle that it's supposed to dry since the solvent needs to dry off. I don't know if it really classifies as a dry lube, but I usually apply rock n roll gold or extreme after I ride. I love that it does a really good job of cleaning my chain off, and it's been an excellent lube in terms of staying clean, lasting a long time in variable conditions, and keeping my drivetrain super quite. My friend uses squirt and it works really well, and is probably cleaner than rock n roll in terms of attracting dirt, but the stuff kind of builds up and is a pain in the ass to clean off.
It's an old video, but I have to give credit where it's due. So much work put in to this video, well done. I am using only Muc-Off (Dry) on my MTBs and I can say that even though after about 50km in wet conditions you can hear it's almost gone, I still prefer it as it's easy to clean, it attracts very little dirt on the chain. Ride, clean, relube - repeat (and it smells nice) :]]]]
Impressive test - I was getting suspect that R&R Gold wasn't a great lube as my chains wear fairly quickly, and I do apply regularly and keep the chain clean on my road bike, but I can relax now and put it down to my awesome power output! :) Great video and thanks for the hard work!
Excellent video and thank you. I found either high quality videos that were subliminal ads for sponsored products or genuinely objective videos with poor methodology; this is the best of both worlds!
Good video and tests. Funny thing though, I replaced Muc Off after years of use and went to Squirt, it is head and shoulders better in real world application. I have doubled chain life, which increases cog life. Also you dont have to perform deep chain cleaning ever again, just wipe of surface dust and add more lube. Maybe you could have explained a paraffin lube to oil base lubes better. Again, good video.
I did the same! I was really disappointed with Muc Off...the only "positive" for me was that it smelled nice. It wears off completely after each ride on my gravel bike...the drivetrain starts sounding like a bird sanctuary after 60-70 km...
Amazing test! Great job on the video! Would love to see the Muc Off C3 dry as well and see if it actually improves over the regular Muc Off dry lube. Subscribing!
@@cocoplops4982 Yes, BUT he just tested the fancy ones I also have terrible experience with C3, but will try this cheapest one since Squirt that I am currently using is not actually performing good in any tests I saw.
You buddy are an absolute star. I know this video is a few years old but I’m on the search for a good lube and just came across this after watching others and this is possibly the best video I’ve ever seen. Amazing mate, thank you so much for taking the time to do this and share your findings.
This is an incredibly well orchestrated test. My only wish is that you had included other super popular chain lubricant brands such as Finish Line and WD40's bike specific dry lube.
Well if you look up "Finish line wax lubricant zero friction cycling" (without the quotation marks), you'll find that it was basically the worst thing they'd ever tested. Guess which one I've been using?
I'm currently using Purple Extreme, so far so good, but had i known about rock n roll gold I probably would have chosen that lube. I was primarily looking for a good chain lude to use this winter. i live in Wisconsin so I'm dealing with cold temp, snow, slush, rain, and road salt all getting on my chain this winter. 10/27/2023 Update: I stopped using Purple Extreme and switched to Finish Line wet lube but noticed that my chain was getting VERY dirty even after only just one week of road cycling. I just switched to R&R Gold today.
I think Purple Extreme is a good choice for your winter climate. It has low viscosity - allowing it to flow better when cold - and keep those inner surfaces on the roller bearings lubed. -Eddie
Nice job! I was not surprised about WD-40 as it is generally considered a solvent and not a lubricant. Would have loved to see you test Finish Line DRY Bike Lubricant. It has a good reputation in the industry. Also, despite being more time consuming to apply, testing a chain that had been parrafin waxed (re: Oz Cycling) would have been really helpful for those who ride in dirty conditions but still want great protection for their chain. Keep up the great work!
Interesting result and great detailed video. From my personal experience I find Muc-Off lubes collect too much dust & dirt and cleaning the chain just with a cloth will be dirt smear all over the place. It takes more time to completely clean your drive train on a wash and even a quick wipe off and re-lube results in a lot of dirt. I switched from MucOff to Squirt and find Squirt superior. It might not last as long or have slightly worse efficiency in wet conditions BUT wiping off and re-lubing takes 5 mins incl. a _clean_ drivetrain. I rather lubricate every 150km instead of having everything dirty as hell on every wash. Being a roadi / gravel guy here though
@@SimplyMountainBiking Great test! I use Muc-Off Dry Ceramic lubricant since over a year on my MTB and I find the chain to stay very clean. On the other hand, the Wet (non-Ceramic) lube does collect quite a bit of dirt on my city bike, but there I don't care as much and drive even while it's raining.
@@SimplyMountainBiking I've been using mucoff dry on my mtb in dusty and wet conditions and I really like it. I find one of the best things about it is how it sheds dirt and how easily it cleans off with a chain cleaning machine. Depending on how muddy the rides are, I usually clean and lube my chain after 3 rides. With about 3K km on it, it has no noticeable wear. On my commuting e-fat bike that I ride all year round including some pretty bad snow, slush and salt conditions, I tried paraffin wax the 1st winter and it was OK but too much of a pain for cleaning and relubing. This past winter I used rock and roll gold and probably was not all that diligent and it worked OK too and was way less effort for maintenence. I've also used a schwinn wet lube that looks a lot like chainsaw oil and as long as you wipe it down well, it doesn't attract too much dirt, resists wash off well and is the longest lasting. I rode 10K km last year, its a 1000W mid drive ebike and I have steep hills over 15% on my way home. I use it as my main mode of transport and often load it up with 230lb me and another 40 or 50 lbs of stuff so it's really punishing that chain. I've gotten as low as around 1000km on a chain in winter and maybe 4K km in summer. I probably go through 4 chains a year, I get KMC plate silver or ept 8 speed chains and change them around 0.75 percent wear. At almost 14K km ice gone through 1 drive sprocket and 2 cassettes. Still way cheaper than a car :-) I usually start off with just the factory lube and decrease the outside of the chain and that lasts quite a long time and doesn't attract much dirt. I'm pretty much now about what's easy and quick to use. At about $30 a chain, it's not worth wasting too much of my time on maintenance.
I have been running Squirt for the past 3 years, and when correctly applied, its been the best lube I have ever used, both for MTB and Road. I get a clean chain with no sticking, which is awesome. My chains last longer, on the road bike I get around 1500km more life out of the chain (when it gets to the 0.5 wear mark). Also you don't need to apply it before every ride if you ride in the dry conditions, I'd say on the road its around 200-250km when I re-lubricate the chain (once a week). Recently on a Granfondo I got gifted a pre-production of a brand new chain wax from a MTB World Cup mechanic, which he produces by himself, and in the short time that I tested it - it is even better than Squirt, once in full production that thing will break out and be the next level..
During the Wet Test I think it would have been valuable to note the weight of the chain before it went through the lubing process. With that you could effectively calculate the percentage of lube lost. Some lubes may deposit less material so may have less mass to lose and could sqew the results
Absolutely amazing work on the tests! Very nice methodology and a great setup for repeatability. I only have one small point to criticize. The first test is fairly unrealistic in any bike related scenario and none of the bike lubricants are designed to work this way. I would have loved to see the same method as used with the Muc-Off dry lube as that is a lot more realistic. I would wager that WD-40 could actually perform better that way as the cleaning agents that are part of the WD-40 that are designed to loosen and solve particles from metal would have evaporated potentially leading to less wear.
Pretty thorough! These days, if you don't have immersive wax in your test, you're missing it. On MTB for dry conditions it's ultra fast, and attracts zero dust/dirt.
@@pewsician2388 I would differ with you there. I started with it here in OR this early spring and was caught a few times in steady rains. On a solid, wet, gritty ride like that the wax is gone gone gone when you get home. Testing shows it's not great in wet or muddy conditions--where you'd be better off with a wet lube--Silca's Synergetic. I'll use that in Winter and Super Secret in Summer here. DOesn't rain all summer.
Beg to differ. I'm in Oregon and used it for a full summer with great results. Winter weather showed up and my Silca wax is GONE after one wet gritty ride. I went to Synergetic wet for Winter, Wax for summer.@@pewsician2388
WHAT A GREAT VIDEO! Thanks for taking the time to test all the brands, I had no idea of what could be the final result, and the test was so well put together, really helpfull. I think your channel is going to soar very fast with so strong and solid content. I will surelly pass the link to friends! Keep up the really great work you are doing, and thank you for helping us in deciding on an propper MTB chain lube. Best! 😀
A very well put together test setup. If you ever do another round of testing, I would love it to see both Finish Line wet and dry ceramic lubes, not to mention the muc-off c3 ceramic dry and wet lube, one of them might be another top contender. 🙂
What ever happened to Tri-Flow as a chain lube? When I rode a lot in the 80s and 90s that was all we used. I still have it in the garage and it works great as a general lube, and it smells much better than WD40.
By far one of the most Official “At home” experiment Iv ever witnessed on RUclips!!! Bravo 👏🏼 Keep up the AMAZING content and thank you for helping me decide on a MTB chain lube.
I see a lot of comments regarding Squirt. I am a Squirt user and it’s definitely fantastic. I noticed right away that in the first friction test you didn’t wait until the wax dried which is the recommended way to use it hence why I knew the wear would be too much. I’m glad you rectified that later in your comments. Definitely wait overnight before you go out and ride your bike. I’ve had my chain for 2.5 years now and have ridden over 12,500 km on it and no wear on my chain yet. An Ultegra 11 speed.
Great video! Although most tests don't reflect wear conditions on a real chain, I recommend the channel Zero Friction Cycling. It has more accurate tests. My go to would be Squirt
ZFS is a distributor for MSW. I'm just a dude in my garage. I have no sponsors or interest in any lube winning. I didn't find wax to be a good lubricant at all. -Eddie
@@SimplyMountainBiking you might want to revisit wax , it's unmatched in chain and drive train longevity and also the fastest. It's not for everyone in every situation.
Fantastic scientific approach! I was super pleased to see my favorite lube won! Yay for Muc-Off!!! I hear the Wet version is even better, as it supposedly stays on even better.
@CocoPlops hmm... just put some Muc-Off Wet lube on. Haven't ridden yet. There was probably some muc-off dry lube still on. Chain is fairly clean. Curious to see if it acts weird, as you say.
Thanks for the honest review 🙂 May I suggest that you test a bottle [not spray can] of 3-IN-ONE Multi-Purpose Oil? It would be interesting to know how well it performs - especially because it is inexpensive and it is something that most people have in their tool shed / garage. . OK, a can of WD-40 is something that most people have at home too. But everyone knows pretty much that WD-40 is for freeing / loosening up rusted / corroded components etc. [a stuck bolt or screw, or a stiff door hinge etc.] It is not intended as a lubricant nor was it ever. . Also, I have to say that some tests that you did were pretty much a total waste of time. Test the product as it is intended to be used. An oil, sure it is sticky, but it stays on the moving part. A dry lube, well don´t test if sand sticks to it seconds after application, test if it sticks after the allowed drying time. And don´t test using a reservoir of liquid product for a dry lube - that makes almost no sense at all. . cheers 👍 JB
@Simply Mountain Biking thanks a lot for this scientific detailed test! So amazing and so well done! The time you spent for providing the community experimental results of bike lubes! Indeed, I was expecting from sand-test results that Muc-Off would be the winner! I'm starting to use it! Bravo Muc-Off!
I’ve recently become a bit obsessed with studying products like this. Mostly gun oils along with some other stuff. This video is amazing. Your tests were so well done and extremely informative. There’s a ton of products like this you could test. I know this a bike channel but if you’re interested I could recommend some gun oils to test. In any case you should check out for yourself a product called seafoam deep creep. It’s a penetrating oil for loosening rusty bolts and such, but is also quite a good lubricant, protects fairly well against rust, and is supposed to resist heat and evaporation. They recommend it for bike chains.
Thank you for all the work you put into this to help us all out! With all of the options out there, it is so hard to narrow down a good quality product that I want to spend my money on.
The amount of work and detail thoughts you put into these tests are impressive! Ingenious! I am also impressed about how much some of the liquid gold lubricants costs and then don't deliver.
Rock and Roll needs apply after every ride ($$) and leaves a grease mark on my leg which attracts crud. Lubes that don't need apply every ride (DuMontec) deserve a low cost (every 5th or 6th ride) *bonus*. PLUS, no crud or grease residue on chain. I am going to try Muc Off as result of your testing, which I really appreciate. Clean chain and happy riding!!
Squirt is the best but you have to be dedicated to maintaining the chain. Like cleaning it really well (plus everything else) before applying, letting it dry overnight before using and then keeping up the squirt when you notice noise. It’s really good when used right.
I've been using R&R Gold on my Trek Domane road riding since I got the bike 3 months ago and I've been very happy with it but not quite sure how it well was performing, especially with regards to wear. So happy I found your video. You have validated my thoughts and feelings about the product.
Man! Your testing methodologies are so good and so well explained... I just hope to see more videos like these! Right now I am still struggling to decide weather to go for a GX cassette or an X01/XX1. I would assume the XX1 with its different cog material and construction would last more, but some people have advised differently. Have you considered doing a video comparing cassettes under high abuse? EBike like torques, stressy shifting, long-term durability, etc. Also... A video comparing the different chains (brands comparison, hollow vs solid, etc.) and their durability. Just food for thought. Cheers!!!
Great video and testing process. You can tell by the sound alone which is going to have higher wear! I use both R&R Gold and Muck Off and neither lasts very long but the R&R seems to keep the chain much cleaner looking - which matters for daily riding.
I can only speak for Dumonde tech and muc off. Both of those lubes are meant to dry before use. Dumonde tech is extremely finicky working best when one drop has been applied to each roller, the the entire chain is throughly wiped with a rag. The goal is to have lube on only the mating surfaces. After that it works spectacular in both and dry conditions. I would have really loved to see an motor connected to a dynomometer to test the efficiency of the chain lubes.
One comment about the leader lubricant (Muc off). You mentioned that it had a “banana” smell. Something you should be aware of, I’m a beekeeper, and one of the thumb rules we go by is “No Banana scents”, regardless if is an actual banana, a scented perfume, or even a banana cream pie odor ( especially artificial banana). This scent closely resembles the alert pheromone that bees use to point out a threat. Once the bees start stinging, they will release more scent, resulting in a more severe attack, from which running or even immersion in water will NOT stop. ( I’ve serviced apiaries that consisted of Africanized (so called “killer”) bees, so I do have some experience with this. Along with the banana scent, once alerted, the bees will concentrate on the color black, as in black clothing, bicycles, camera cases, and even car or bike black plastic mirror backs. I would advise that you avoid this scent when going on a ride… if you do alert bees, you will NOT succeed in outrunning them. Best to cover your face and get indoors where you can block the attacks and remove the bees. Beekeepers routinely use their smoker tools to apply smoke to their suits. This seems to work well as we have them working prior to working the bees. Just a heads up.
I had a bottle close to "Epic ride" formula, used it ONCE on a squeaky gate that was so loud and irritating if somebody opened it and you weren't expecting it, basically your teeth would just about drop out! I only used a little bit but that was about 3 years ago and it's still quiet! and used it on a squeaky rotary clothes line in the backyard same result, so great for squeaky gates and clothes lines.
I like all these tests... one thing though, I always backpedal a rag until the chain is as dry as possible after lubing it, as the point is to get the lube under and in the rollers for the lubrication and not to leave a dirt-attracting coating on the outside.. so the sand test isn't really quite as important unless the user doesn't wipe the outside.
Very great video! Very impressed! WD-40 is an acronym for Water-Displacement Formula Version 40. It's only purpose is to displace water. It was created to control condensation and prevent rust on inter-continental ballistics missiles, potentially carrying nuclear warheads, or Atom bombs. Definitely not a chain lube. Or lubrication of any sort. I'm surprised it didn't perform better in the spray test!
Outstanding scientific comparison. Subjective sections were explained. And yes, dry lubes are better performers in variable conditions. I use the Purple extreme on my roadie, never ride in the rain or wet. I use Your top choice on my MYB! My choices were done with a variety of research of online sources. This was a much better and concise research tool that I wish was available when I was shopping. But, it does validate my research and ultimate lubricant choices. Well done, sir!
I dont ride in mud unless by accident. Squirt works fine for me. A quick wipedown and light application after every couple rides has served me well for years. And chain stays clean. Doesn't get gunked up.
Thank-you for your video, I wanted to find the best possible chain lube and watched quite a few videos then found yours, the best! Now I know what to buy! Thank-you very much for all the HOURS you put in making this video which will help out a lot of people!😉
@@SimplyMountainBiking I'm currently using T9 from Boeshield. It works very well for me. But, based on your findings, I've ordered a bottle of Muc-Off to try. Thanks again.
I used Squirt for about 1000 miles on my road bike chain in mostly dry conditions. When I took the chain off for a good, deep clean, I found an unbelievable amount of goop. The remaining Squirt was tossed into the trash can. I have switched to Muc-Off. We will see how it performs.
I watched this a couple of years ago and I had to take the last year off from riding so I watched it again now as a refresher. And the video is even better the 2hd time around. Thanks for all your work on this video. Even 2 years later I still can't find any objective review of bike chain lube that comes anywhere near your review. Will you be doing a similar test of wet lubes like Finish Line? I'd love to see other lubes in a follow up test. I wonder if Muc-Off dry lube will remain champ!
Thank you very much. I don't have plans for a new test. I bought 8 more "top of the line" lubes over a year ago and they're just sitting on the shelf. 😔 -Eddie
Great testing! I vote for round 2. Some to consider testing: Finish line wet, Finish line dry teflon Finish line dry ceramic WD-40 wet bike lube WD-40 dry bike lube. I've used all of them accept the ceramic one. I prefer Finish line dry teflon.
This presentation was outstanding! After getting the Muc-Off Wet in a Kit, I decided to buy the Dry and I also was impressed by it's ease of application, performance, and smell! I was very impressed by the water test with it, as I thought it would really have issues with that one. The bottle of Rock n Roll gold that I have says it should applied the night before riding and left to dry; would have liked to seen the results if left to dry like the other 3 @15:34
You should try a micros scale too. Measuring the amount of weight lost and the wear scar length is probably more accurate than just measuring only its length. And for the sling test it is a good idea to weigh the dry card box and then reweigh it after the test to see how much it soaked up, that should give you a little more in-depth information on how much it will stick and leave. Instead of just eye balling it. I love everything you did with the channel ❤ and I hope this idea might be able to help you make a much better content.
this looks amazingly well done - thanks for going to the effort to explain and show methodology! ordered some muc off dry and a shimano dura ace hg901 chain together, i hope it does better than the horrible silver hook chain wax that became what could only be described as valve lapping paste after one ride in dusty conditions...
I use 80w90 gear oil on my motorcycle chain, applied with a brush which oils every nook and cranny. It expels any dirt so all links remain fully moveable at all times and the chain stays technically "clean". Only downside is it may drip mildly for the first day, if parked up after applying it, which is solved by an old flattened cardboard box under the chain area. Chain always looks like new otherwise though. Should work perfectly on bicycle chains too, as won't need oiling as often as a motorbike chain.
Another great comparison so we don't have to. I use White Lightening original and don't ride in too many wet conditions. I do think my next lube will be Muc Off.
Love your video. I’ve owned a Rock n Roll lubricant for 4 years now and I’ve only used it once because I thought it wasn’t good. But I think my mind has changed after this video lol I’ll be stocking up on Rock n Roll and Muc off. 🤣
Great test, I appreciate the scientific approach. Since my Ego is emotionally invested in my preferred lube of choice, I just had to point out that Rock and Roll is also considered a dry lube and didn't the get the dry lube treatment. Seriously tho, great test and video.
Outstanding video, thanks. Squirt seems to be highly regarded for some reason. I’ve tried it and it is like using vanilla frosting on your chain. I’m now using Muc-off based on your video and it has been great. Thanks again
As a rock n roll gold user for years I was biting my nails in anticipation of the outcome. I’m pleased that I’ve been treating my ridiculously over priced AXS drive trains with the good stuff.all along. I will be trying the winner however…….because it smells good.
Yeah - the Muc Off has PTFE/Teflon in it. It's a great lubricating agent - just not so sure about its effect on the environment and our health. :) -Eddie
Muc-Off Dry Lube is great for about two to three rides, but it will virtually disappear after that, so you'll need to apply it very often. This might not be a problem for some people, but I want a lube that lasts at least ten rides. I found Finish Line Dry Lube to be the best compromise.
This is fantastic. My only critique is that I would have liked to see the lubes, after drying, compared on the wear scar test. No one will bike with a reservoir full of lubricant. Only Muc-off was tested in this fashion at 6:50.

I have doubled chain life, which increases cog life. Also you dont have to perform deep chain cleaning ever again, just wipe of surface dust and add more lube. Maybe you could have explained a paraffin lube to oil base lubes better. Again, good video.
Thanks for sharing! I'll have a dry test of Squirt soon. I'll also be comparing Squirt to another paraffin. I hope you'll watch it. -Eddie
@@SimplyMountainBiking Hope to see you adding a "OZ cycle recipe (pure parraffin with a 10th 1.6micron PTFE)" Heat wax bath to that test.
I did the same! I was really disappointed with Muc Off...the only "positive" for me was that it smelled nice. It wears off completely after each ride on my gravel bike...the drivetrain starts sounding like a bird sanctuary after 60-70 km...
I got a free sample of Squirt for a race a few years ago. That's now my go-to lube. I ride in the SW US and it's perfect.
Wow, I just shifted to Squirt also. Not picking up dirt and dust is important! I was using Muc Off, but it seemed to gum up the chain after a while.
Amazing test! Great job on the video! Would love to see the Muc Off C3 dry as well and see if it actually improves over the regular Muc Off dry lube. Subscribing!
Thank you! I may test more lubricants in the future. If I do, other Muc Off varieties will certainly make the list! -Eddie
Hi Matt I was looking at the C3 as well and was wondering the same esp. since it’s has a premium cost.
Muc off lubes are genuinely awful. Go look at zero friction cycles and you’ll never touch them again
@@cocoplops4982 Yes, BUT he just tested the fancy ones I also have terrible experience with C3, but will try this cheapest one since Squirt that I am currently using is not actually performing good in any tests I saw.
C3 has reviews all over how it leaves gum like film all over drive train. Pass for me
You buddy are an absolute star. I know this video is a few years old but I’m on the search for a good lube and just came across this after watching others and this is possibly the best video I’ve ever seen. Amazing mate, thank you so much for taking the time to do this and share your findings.
Glad you liked it! -Eddie
Epic video. Really detailed and so well presented and edited. You've got a bright future on youtube.
Wow, thank you! -Eddie
This is an incredibly well orchestrated test. My only wish is that you had included other super popular chain lubricant brands such as Finish Line and WD40's bike specific dry lube.
Yes - I may get to them some day... - Eddie
Well if you look up "Finish line wax lubricant zero friction cycling" (without the quotation marks), you'll find that it was basically the worst thing they'd ever tested. Guess which one I've been using?
@@SimplyMountainBiking "ProGold prolink" is also extremely popular, easily top 8.
Thank you!.Great suggestions! -Eddie
I'm honestly annoyed whenever anyone refers to WD-40 as a lubricant.
Thanks for sharing your perspectives and experience! I guess I'll see how Muc-Off does in real world conditions. -Eddie
@@patoberli Thanks for sharing! -Eddie
@Stephen - thanks for sharing! That's a lot of experience shared! -Eddie
Hey - I'm glad you like it. I never had any luck with wax in the southeastern U.S. -Eddie
During the Wet Test I think it would have been valuable to note the weight of the chain before it went through the lubing process. With that you could effectively calculate the percentage of lube lost. Some lubes may deposit less material so may have less mass to lose and could sqew the results
Thanks for your feedback. -Eddie
Thank you for the comment and suggestions! -Eddie
Pretty thorough! These days, if you don't have immersive wax in your test, you're missing it. On MTB for dry conditions it's ultra fast, and attracts zero dust/dirt.
It's does well in wet conditions also
@@pewsician2388 I would differ with you there.
I don't ride dry and was selfish in this test - testing only lubes I would consider using... -Eddie
Beg to differ. I'm in Oregon and used it for a full summer with great results. Winter weather showed up and my Silca wax is GONE after one wet gritty ride. I went to Synergetic wet for Winter, Wax for summer.@@pewsician2388

What ever happened to Tri-Flow as a chain lube? When I rode a lot in the 80s and 90s that was all we used. I still have it in the garage and it works great as a general lube, and it smells much better than WD40.
Never heard of it... -Eddie

its just an add...
Thanks for sharing! -Eddie
Mate, great vid! Loved the effort you put into this - also helps that my favorite chain lubes where the top two! Keep up the great work.

Fantastic scientific approach!
I was super pleased to see my favorite lube won! Yay for Muc-Off!!!
I hear the Wet version is even better, as it supposedly stays on even better.
Cool! I'll check it out. -Eddie
Muc off wet lube ends up creating a paste like material that ends up chewing through your drive train. Avoid it.
@CocoPlops hmm... just put some Muc-Off Wet lube on. Haven't ridden yet. There was probably some muc-off dry lube still on. Chain is fairly clean. Curious to see if it acts weird, as you say.
Great test! Thanks for doing this, it was super helpful.

Thanks for the honest review 🙂
May I suggest that you test a bottle [not spray can] of 3-IN-ONE Multi-Purpose Oil?
It would be interesting to know how well it performs - especially because it is inexpensive and it is something that most people have in their tool shed / garage.
.
OK, a can of WD-40 is something that most people have at home too.
But everyone knows pretty much that WD-40 is for freeing / loosening up rusted / corroded components etc.
[a stuck bolt or screw, or a stiff door hinge etc.]
It is not intended as a lubricant nor was it ever.
And don´t test using a reservoir of liquid product for a dry lube - that makes almost no sense at all.
.
cheers 👍
JB
You're welcome. Thanks for the feedback. -Eddie
@Simply Mountain Biking thanks a lot for this scientific detailed test! So amazing and so well done! The time you spent for providing the community experimental results of bike lubes! Indeed, I was expecting from sand-test results that Muc-Off would be the winner! I'm starting to use it!

Thank you so much! I don't have any current plans to break out the test kit soon. I'll keep this in mind - maybe some day! -Eddie
As passionate Rock Gold fan for years... Held my breath till end! Confirmed great stuff!

Great point! -Eddie
Squirt is the best but you have to be dedicated to maintaining the chain. Like cleaning it really well (plus everything else) before applying, letting it dry overnight before using and then keeping up the squirt when you notice noise. It’s really good when used right.
Thank you for your feedback. -Eddie

Cheers!!!
Thanks for your feedback and suggestions! I really like your idea about abusing cogs... hmmm.... -Eddie

Great video and testing process. You can tell by the sound alone which is going to have higher wear! I use both R&R Gold and Muck Off and neither lasts very long but the R&R seems to keep the chain much cleaner looking - which matters for daily riding.

Came for the results but was wowed by the test itself. Kudos for the effort!

You are so welcome! -Eddie
Great information! -Eddie

Thank you very much. I don't have plans for a new test. I bought 8 more "top of the line" lubes over a year ago and they're just sitting on the shelf. 😔 -Eddie
Great testing! I vote for round 2. Some to consider testing:

Finish line dry teflon
Finish line dry ceramic
WD-40 wet bike lube

You should try a micros scale too. Measuring the amount of weight lost and the wear scar length is probably more accurate than just measuring only its length.
And for the sling test it is a good idea to weigh the dry card box and then reweigh it after the test to see how much it soaked up, that should give you a little more in-depth information on how much it will stick and leave. Instead of just eye balling it.
I love everything you did with the channel ❤ and I hope this idea might be able to help you make a much better content.
Thank you for your suggestions. Much appreciated. -Eddie
this looks amazingly well done - thanks for going to the effort to explain and show methodology! ordered some muc off dry and a shimano dura ace hg901 chain together, i hope it does better than the horrible silver hook chain wax that became what could only be described as valve lapping paste after one ride in dusty conditions...
Thanks! - Eddie
At that viscosity - on a mountain bike - I think 90w really picks up a lot of gunk on the trail. -Eddie
Great tests. Clearly it was a lot of work, thank you!

Muc-Off Dry Lube is great for about two to three rides, but it will virtually disappear after that, so you'll need to apply it very often. This might not be a problem for some people, but I want a lube that lasts at least ten rides. I found Finish Line Dry Lube to be the best compromise.
Thanks for sharing! -Eddie
This is fantastic. My only critique is that I would have liked to see the lubes, after drying, compared on the wear scar test. No one will bike with a reservoir full of lubricant. Only Muc-off was tested in this fashion at 6:50.
