    140,000 cars per day. 5 bucks each. 700,000$ per day. 250,000,000$ a year. It'll be paid off in 16 years. Lifespan of 100 years. A good investment.

      Only possible because of low interest rates. Otherwise normally the toll would have to be twice as much.

    I drove past the construction of the new Bridge 2x a week for 6 months while I was commuting from PA to Andover, MA for consulting work. Sitting in traffic on Friday afternoons watching them lift these massive spans was a sight I would never forget, but as I sat on the old, swaying and shaking TappanZee, holding my breath in hopes that I could make it to the Otherside so that someday I could drive on the new bridge.
    I finished my working gig in Andover, Mass in Sept of 2015, then I set up email alerts on the progress for the new bridge opening and I made it a point to make sure I could drive across it on day one. So I got up that morning and made my way to NY, 2 hours from my home, and stayed overnight at a local hotel just so I could be ready to cross the new span. The night before I crossed using the original span and then the next new day I was using the new bridge. it was amazing, beautiful to look at and a memory I will have for life.
    As a native of Bridgeport, CT with family still in the area of Bridgeport I utilize this bridge on every visit to see my family and even in 2020 I look in awe at this bridge and smile knowing America can still build great things.
    If you have never driven across the old Tappan Zee bridge you never knew the fear you would have wondering if this was the day it was going to break apart and collapse into the Hudson, it was exciting and scary at the same time and known by the NY locals as the Hold Your Breath bridge. The best part of my history of using the old Tappan Zee is having a shirt I bought in 2018 once both spans of the new bridge were finally opened was this shirt that says I drove on and survived the original Tappan Zee bridge.

      @EpiDemic117 The naming rights should be leased out to companies so that we can lessen the tax burden on the citizens. We would also avoid situations like this where bridges are named for politicians who swindled their way into office. This is New York State's Imperial bridge named after our ruling family, the Cuomos. Really gross stuff that could be avoided with a solution which would help pay for a significant portion of the bridge.

    Say what you like about Cuomo. I personally think he's a real piece of work and do not agree with his political views. This bridge would not have been completed without him, which alleviates thousands of traffic hours and time wasted trying to cross the archaic Tappan Zee Bridge. Even if the overall lifetime costs of this bridge double, it will have been more than worth it in commerce that it supports throughout it's lifetime.
    Infrastructure is generally always money well spent. It baffles me that it took them this long to even start this stupid bridge. Thank you Cuomo!

    • @JeffDeWitt
      @JeffDeWitt 4 года назад +1

      Leaving aside the digs at the corrupt governments there are practical reasons. The Hudson River is pretty wide at that point, it is subject to tidal currents, plus there is a lot of traffic on the river. In addition the bridge has to carry a lot of vehicular traffic... that's what it's for after all. They might have been able to build a cheaper bridge, but not that much cheaper, and certainly not for 1/10 the cost.
