An upgrade for U.S. airports

  • Travelers aren't complaining about layovers at Singapore's Changi Airport (consistently ranked the best in the world) thanks to its movie theaters, rooftop pool, hot tub, and butterfly garden. Yet in the United States, there isn't an airport within the Top 30 of the World's Best Airports. Kris Van Cleave looks at efforts to update America's air terminals in such major cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and Salt Lake City, and talks with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo about his ambitious, multi-billion-dollar effort to modernize New York City's notoriously antiquated LaGuardia Airport.

As some one from Singapore I'd say Changi Airport is great though with still some small areas for improvement. For instance Terminals 1-3 have their bus stops in the basement & they aren't climate-controlled, so they're quite noisy and stuffy. Also the departure airside entrance at Terminals 1 & 2 are rather low & feel enclosed

I know it's a bad habit we need to break but MOST of us Americans usually wait for something to break before we renovate, build a new modern version or something bigger and brand new. We believe that building new is less expensive than repeatedly repairing something that already has an old infrastructure and is doomed to break again but that belief is changing and usually the US goes big when changing its infrastructure we are a first world country so we have no choice but to keep up. We are building new roads, airports, housing development, office space, skyscrapers etc. And Hyperloop and high speed rail is finally in development, We keep up with our stuff. That’s not true; the wealthy make money off of us. Why NOT have a good airport? They want it just as bad. It’s just not worth investing in because we’ve gotten so behind on infrastructure after overworking steel, starting in the 50s. Thus a lot of big city infrastructure is outdated. There’s different policies that can change this, and no one solution is perfect, but it’s about what will incentivize is to invest in an airport as much as is invested in houses or cars, which the American public eats up. Houses and cars, after all, is where lost of the savings are. Why spend on something that isn’t part of your customer’s savings, and therefore, their consumption? You won’t.

From our best airports to our premier dog show, our public life smacks of isolation and loneliness. Compare our Purina dog show with Cruft’s in the U.K. It’s extremely hard to project a lack of cameraderie when you have dogs, but somehow we do it, in contrast to Cruft’s which fosters enthusiastic, doggy joy. Community events too are fantastic to partake in as well! Blessings to you and anyone that ever suffers from loneliness, but I promise you better days are ahead always. This money could be put to better use for improving NY schools, healthcare, poverty, etc., but, if they're going to invest it in air travel, improving the appeal of one airport is the wrong move. I'm referring of a secondary hub/gateway (like it was for Midwest and Northwest) as well as a possible 3rd Chicago region airport, (like Baltimore is to Washington DC). Furthermore with how climate change is going, those harsh winters may become a thing of the past. Look at this year, no snow and mid 50s for the holidays (evne broke a couple daily records). MSP is one of the best airports in the US, no doubt. I miss flying out of there. I live in Denver now and despite consistently ranking highly, DEN is pretty annoying. Being one of the farthest airports from downtown means it’s inconvenient to get to. The terminals are too narrow for peak traffic times and there’s no way to get to all the terminals under your own power. You’re forced to cram into a train that is *always* completely packed. There are almost no stairs anywhere, only 1 escalator up and down wherever you go, meaning you’re always stuck behind people with giant suitcases. CVG on the other hand has a walkway that parallels the train as well as multiple escalators up and down. A much less stressful experience than being a sardine until you get to your gate.

While there is an absolute need for U.S. airport infrastructure to be updated, it should be pointed out that the U.S. airline and airport system is vastly larger and vastly DIFFERENT than virtually anyplace else in the world. Our airports are largely built to support DOMESTIC business and leisure traffic, where there is much more competition and margins are thin. This is in contrast to most airports in the world whose service is largely INTERNATIONAL where the frequency/traffic is fundamentally different, and the cost points and margins are higher. This difference impacts both our airlines and airports in virtually the exact same way. In other words, it’s much easier for Singapore airport and Singapore Airlines to be the worlds best when absolutely every flight is international...it’s also basically that countries ONLY airport (of consequence).

I live 10 minutes from LGA and I'm SO EXCITED that we're finally going to have a world class airport here. Now if they'll only allow for longer distance flights.... that they didn't do.... at least yet. Hopefully they'll lengthen the runways at some point in the future. We'll see.

A month ago I flew LAX to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.
It was my first time flying (I have a phobia of heights) and it was also my first time in LAX... it was TERRIBLE.
Checked in and the lady threw my luggage like garbage on the conveyor belt. The place was almost depressing and fortunately our flight was okay.
10 days later... time to experience HANEDA.
It was in ANOTHER LEVEL, it wasn't luxurious cuz we all know that's not what you want in an airport. It was EFFICIENT and CONVENIENT.
From their monorail to the airport, their amazing customer service, their shops, their restrooms their conveniently placed vending machines... EVERYTHING.
Then we arrived at LAX and they broke the tires from my luggage and I had to almost carry the massive case all over the place.

As a frequent traveler (3 months out of the year), I could care less about airport waterfalls, Starbucks, lights, stores, restaurants, couches, etc. Plan your trip correctly, and you have zero time for any of that anyway. Precheck, no layover, and you’re at your destination. I don’t know how these people booked travel with such long layovers. How’s that possible? Around the world, I’ve never had a layover over an hour or two (and most of that is walking to the next terminal and checking email). What I care about the most is aircraft seating space. I’m tall and wide shouldered (knees don’t fit anymore) so I have to pay for upgraded seating.
