Woodturning - The Cool Conker

- In this video I turn a Burl from a Conker tree (Horse Chestnut) into a natural edge vessel, I went with a simple form so I could keep the burl as large as possible and not lose much of the amazing character which was inside. I added quite a few coats of sanding sealer to help harden up some of the punky areas and I finished the piece with Danish oil ..

This one is so full of character. It seems like you could look it over for an hour and still not see all there is to see in it. Beautifully done!
Gorgeous work, Andy. For your photo setup at the end, use a white t-shirt/cloth (if your lights are LEDs) to diffuse your light source. It will soften all those shadows created by multiple light sources and the reflection won't be so hot.
No adds in the entire video, this mans a legend

Love the natural beauty of this piece! Truly magnificent!!
I really like this piece. The burl has so much character and you did the live edge justice. 👏❤
I love how much it looks like a hatched eggshell. I would hate to see what came out of an egg that big. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
If that were an actual egg, it would make me think of "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream"
You are right and I thought of Jurassic Park.
It’s look like a ostrich egg
@@paulthe2mikolajdupontsrens586
Except this is bigger than an ostrich egg which is approximately 6 in. Same size as a dollar bill.
@@n40tom okay cool
my heart is lifted when i get to see you work. it’s like i’m sitting in your workshop getting to see the magic happen, i’m not well enough to work on my own creative projects ar the moment so this is everything to me, you have such a good eye and skill and when it’s matched with an incredible piece of nature like this one, magic happens. it’s a blessing that such things can be created, it’s a gift that you are willing to share it with us. thank you so much. i continue to love your work.
Thanks 👍
I love watching these at night, when I have insomnia or am too upset or angry to sleep. They calm me right down and hypnotize me into sleep.
I'll be giving birth in a few months, maybe I'll turn on your videos in the background to help keep me calm.
Man of million words without muttering a sound! Great work as always Andy.
I always send my 17yo daughter your videos! We have a love for wood turning and enjoy your work! Absolutely gorgeous as usual Andy! Thank you!
Thanks 👍
I love the organic natural beauty of this piece. Absolutely gorgeous Andy! 💕😊
Thanks 👍
Always enjoy your craftsmanship. Takes me back to my childhood when my godfather would make furniture with wood. Thanks Andy
I love the shape. It reminds me of a dragon egg. The wood is amazing. So much character.
Have you seen his "Dragon Eggs"? Like ALL his works, 😍 😘
Beautiful! Your works show me a totally new way to look at wood, Andy. Love your esthetic for wood!
I’ve been collecting burl and other wood pieces for almost 20 yrs now. But, none of them are as good as yours! You are a true artist!!
Thank you
Can't believe i have just found this one almost a year after it was done. I looooove this piece. It reminds me of a dinosaur egg [not that iv'e ever seen one]. It has that magical quality about it. I am so glad that you left the natural edge as it really lends something to this little beauty. Thanks again Andy for some gorgeous turns. Shirley from the UK.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Andy; if I could afford it, my entire house would be FILLED with your beautiful, stunning art.
Absolutely gorgeous.
God bless, stay safe.
Love from Down Under 🌺❣️
Thanks Lucy 👍
Everytime i watch one of these videos i always picture the chunk of wood flying back to my face.
Toking 204, I would be scared to do this kind of work just because of that fact 😅
I mean it happens but If you think about what you are doing and wear face shield and what not , not really a big deal. I always stand to the side when first spinning something off balance up. You learn how to safely hold your work.
This is exquisite Andy! Beautiful as always! Has anyone ever told you that not only are you a wonderful artist, but a terrific therapist as well. If not, I just did!
That is one of the most beautiful pieces of wood I've ever seen! It's like it's made out of marble!
There are some things which we can always count on. We are always going to be taxed, all of us will die, and every one of your videos are amazing! Consistency in artistry.
Thank you
What a beautiful piece. One of my favorites of yours. Great work.
Wow. The grains and textures on that are amazing. Stunning piece of art, Andy!
This is absolutely wonderful. It is remarkable how much hidden beauty there is in nature, and it takes an artist like yourself to bring it out. Thank you for posting this.
Beautiful piece! It's hard to believe the grain is natural... It looks like a painting!
I never get tired of watching you create masterpieces...👌😋
Termites inside the wood: _You spin me right round-_

Absolutely admirable. Un chef d'oeuvre! Ie: piece of art Andy! Great work.
Best bed time videos. Then I can dream about making one of these... One day.
The grain is awesome...looks like the surface of some far off planet! Could look at it for hours and still find something new. Amazing piece, again! 😊😊😊
Thanks 👍
I love how it turned out. I like it when they have the resin to add some more color, but this one was already a beutiful shade.
Cheers
Amazing piece of art. It reminds me of the Ice king's head from Game of Thrones.
Stunning!
Tvoje ime na srpskom se čita Endi Filip a umetnost koju stvaraš je fantastična! Pozdrav iz jedne divne zemlje na Balkanu!
This is what I call a true work of art.
Simply stunning Andy - thank you for sharing your skills and vision with us all. X
What a beautiful piece of art. Love the raw edge pieces.
Love how it looks like a butterfly wing on one side. Gorgeous piece!
Poor groots head lol this mans work is so satisfying
Wow!! That is a stunning piece. It's beautiful. But it's a dinosaur egg shell!! Thanks for the videos.
I love the live edge on this one. You've really highlighted the features beautifully.
It's totally amazing what an ugly chunk of wood can turn into with a little Andy touch! Lovely work!
I always find the comments interesting, I watch a wide range of stuff and the comments have vastly different tones and styles depending on the video the attached to. You can just tell how wildy different the people in each comment section are. For example this comments section is quite nice and relaxed....
The wood art was awesome as well, really Impressive
Yeah Im guilty of changing tone for the different environments I'm commenting in. I'll be a real jerk sometimes in a comments section full of similar stuff but in woodworking comments I'm really polite and try to be helpful when I can. Maybe I should hold myself to a better standard, but maybe I'm just thinking that based on the video I'm commenting under lol
I can't believe how that turned out, another wonderful piece, a true craftsman at the top of his Game. Genius 😁👍
Cheers
Thanks for sharing and caring! Really, really cool piece! I can see so many matrixes in this piece....birds, aliens, man, owls ...etc... on and on! I love this!
Such an ugly peace of wood to start with, such an amazing peace of art once it came out of your hand. Thank you to share your talent with us!
This is another beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing your skill and artistry with us.
I have been obsessively watching your videos since the last few days. This is just deeply satisfying. Plus you are great!
Thanks 👍
Nice work Andy as usual, love the grain pattern. You know it kinda makes me think of one of those hatched Xenomorph eggs from the Alien movies. All you gotta do now is carve out one of those face sucker thingamajigs to have crawling from inside the egg. 😁
Andy, that is truly a work of art! Beautiful Job!
Beautiful!! 👌 And I really love the fact that you share your video's without adding music! Super! ❤️
Another amazingly beautiful piece. Never noticed the Shelf of Shame before. Lol.
Posted 5 minutes ago! . . . . the last time I was this early that burl was still a seed!
The early worm catches the burl. 😁
Early worms? Never seen one 😉
@@kerstin4516 probably didn’t get out of bed in time. 😅
First time I have seen horse chestnut turned, what a beautiful burl
Such amazing inclusions and tones, love your choice of design and that there is no resin
Beautiful work, enjoyable video as always, thank you for sharing 😉
Thank you 👍
You did oh so well in this piece. 😘💙💜💚💚💜💙
Beautiful, as always. And thanks for not adding music to your vids! I like the sound of the turning and find music takes something away from the viewing pleasure.
Wow that's an amazing burl it's beautiful enjoyed watching you create this beauty Great job
Who the hell would down vote this? They must be jealous. Andy is a master of the lathe. Prove me wrong.
Beautiful as always, Andy, well done.

Beautiful. How can a horrible disease for humans make such beautiful tumors for trees. You can see the chaotic cell growth so well in this wonderful vase.
Daaamn....
Just loving the live edge on this piece. This is one of my fav live edge pieces that I've seen you do Andy. Yet another perfect way to end the day, just before bed.
Thanks 👍
Beautiful piece. Looks like a prehistoric egg. Very nice
As always, a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing Andy.
I love the grain. Very interesting not to mention beautiful. Stunning piece.
So much to draw the eye in. Hypnotic.
That is a beautiful piece Andy. Natural beauty.
Extremely cool! Looks like a hatched dragon egg 🐲
Beautiful wood. Beautiful work.
Gorgeous piece, Andy. As always!
Love watching your hollowing skills!

Wowzers! That really is a "cool conker"! Thanks for sharing another great video. Stay safe.
The difference in colour range before and after the oil treatment is spectacular
An awesome turning. You really highlighted the natural beauty in the wood.
Great job, Andy. I really look forward to your videos.
Another beautiful turning!💕
Nice piece. Lovely shape, shows the burl grain beaultifully.
Beauty! Just the perfect amount of spalting too.
Such beautiful grain and live edge! Very well done!
Hi Andy, You certainly brought out the best in the burr. Beautiful. Take care Andy. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw 👍
wow.... I am without words. Just gorgeous!
Thanks 👍
As always, you've ended up with a beautiful finished end product that is a piece of art. I've about run out of adjectives to do your work justice, but I'm always impressed... and I have to admit that watching you turn some pieces, at various points in the process, is almost hypnotic. Thanks as always for sharing, and the details you provide about the process. Take care.
Thank you ..Cheers Lynn 👍
Andy, your creations demonstrate a master's eye for curve, contour, and overall pleasing (often breathtakingly stunning) appearance. Although I enjoy watching you create works of art on your RUclips channel from resin-free wood, wood/resin, and wood-free resin, my preference is for pieces like this one, made from a single character-rich piece of wood.
Thanks 👍
Awesome work as always Andy !
Cheers Doug
Another stunner, your live edge pieces are the best
Amazing; thank you Mr Philip. I’ve learnt something - previously the only wood I wouldn’t give a thank you for was horse chestnut. Soft, early to rot and doesn’t even give off much heat in the wood burner. But then I see this lovely creative piece and think whoah there - another prejudice trashed. Thanks Andy.
It never ceases to amaze mr how you take a piece of rotting wood and make something so beautiful.
Beautiful chunk of wood! Great job bringing out the beauty.
Stunning! What a transformation! 💙
This is a very beautiful piece nature made all you had to do is take off the ruff stuff and form it great job 👍👍👍👍
Beautiful as always. Looks like a dragons egg.
Truly remarkable craftsmanship.
Lovely grain and colour on that. Lovely jubbly.
I love everything about this, Andy! 😊

Fantastically beautiful, I like the egg shape.

So trippy when the shutter speed makes it look like it's rotating in the opposite direction.
You always find the beauty in the ugliest pieces of wood , very nice work Andy . Even though I love your resin work this piece is just stunning .
Thank you Vicky 👍
Andy, Andy, Andy.... You continue to impress the livin’ heck outta me, my man. I would love to buy that piece, if you ever offer it up for sale. The natural grains of how that wood was formed are amazingly beautiful. And, of course, you brought all that out with your artist’s eye and special talents.
Thanks ...maybe up for sale on the website shop soon 👍
On Etsy or on your website, Andy?
09:58 With the lights reflection and the natural cut of the wood...I see a smiley face 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Beautiful piece. Always a real pleasure to see you work.
Cheers
Wow, that's really beautiful.
Thank you!
I really like this piece. Enjoyed watching you make it
