Woodturning - Big Birch Burl

- In this video I take a Birch Burl and cast my largest hybrid to date, you can maybe tell from the video that I started to turn a large hybrid sphere but I decided I would lose too much character, so opted for a lamp base instead ..
I used a slow set epoxy and teal coloured mica powder, I finished the piece using an abrasive paste a finishing wax and buffed the resin with menzerna buffing compounds.

I always try to envision what you are creating and what it will look like as I'm watching your videos, but I have never even come close. You always take some chunk of wood that most normal people would have used to burn in a fireplace and end up creating a masterpiece that belongs in an art museum. GREAT JOB as always. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lynn 👍
Oh my, the grain in that burl is stunning and I love the teal you chose. The whole piece is gorgeous (as ever) and the process is utterly mesmerising. It’s a good day that starts with a video from Mr Phillip!
I love how the frame rate matched up perfectly in the time lapse so it made it look like it was turning way slower. Super fascinating.

There are channels where the video sampling rate syncs up the the whirling of helicopter blades. You can hear the usual sound of the helicopter, but it seems to be ascending with its blades still.
The river running down the face is gorgeous! I love the metallic teal resin too. It really works with the intricate grain in the burl. Beautiful work.
To have a lump of wood, see the shape of something hiding in it, and bring it out.
That level of artistic craftmanship amazes me.
I appreciate how you follow the wood to keep it's character, I like that you film parts of you looking it over and deciding as well. Thanks!
Thanks 👍
Pure artistry. Love that you have only the ambient sounds, so enjoyable to watch a true craftsman at work.
I love when the rotation matched the FPS and it looks like it’s not spinning.
Beautiful production.
My favorite part is the oiling. It reveals al the details.
But was it oil or shellac?
I love oiling too... But not the same.
I disagree! 😒
@@stevenklingler9376 good for you.

I'm glad you found the wood back. So often when people do these hybrid projects the wood disappears and almost all you see is resin. I prefer this, where the resin just fills the voids but the wood is the star.
Oh my goodness I'm waiting for the completed piece and then you turn it into a lamp! Beautiful work, very clever.🇦🇺🐨🇦🇺🐨❤️❤️❤️
We have no idea of what you are doing. Knowing what you are planning and the seeing you accomplish the task is really nice to see.
Stunning! I love the contrast between the light wood, the dark live edge and the teal resin.
Absolutely smashing Andy, I love the ones that look like a planet from orbit, fantastic work as always
WOW! That is beautiful!!!Love the blues and greens! So calming!
Anyone else never read the description and just sit thinking "I don't know wtf he's making but it sure is pretty"
Yep. I'll read the title and watch it take shape and it's nice seeing it become the thing. This one I was watching the oil go on thinking, "very pretty. What is it"? Then he stuck the lampshade on and it all made sense.
When he drilled a hole in the middle, I had a clue. :-)
Every dam time
I was clueless till the lamp went into it
YES! I love it when the frame rate and RPM of the lathe match up. Looks like it's not rotating, but you see the wood chips flying, and the shape changing.
Birch is a pretty wood. It takes serious skill to really bring out it's character. You definitely have the skill. This one, though. It is full of character. I think you chose the best way to display it's beauty.
.
Very nice!! It’s so nice to watch something old and usually discarded turn into something super cool!!!
I admit that I didn’t know where you were going with this one and then...BAM!!!!! You hit us with a beautiful lamp!

Only found your channel a month ago via random YT suggestions, and have commented before, but have to say:
As someone that would like to be a 'maker' but doesn't have the tools or space, the most impressive thing I've noticed from binging your videos is how efficient you've gotten with your resin castings. Always cool to watch someone grow in a skill. EDIT: also, the lack of annoying voiceover or horrible music makes you VERY good. Just a dude and his craft =
Bölü
Sledgehammers and reciprocating saws are almost as efficient when you take organizing the mess that taking the shed down with a tractor would make into account. Just saying that there's always a ready made reason not to do something. Just get out there and do it.
I like it when they tell us what they're doing. Teaching. I learn so much more from videos that talk to us.
ANDY THAT IS ONE AWESOM LAMP .LOVE THE COLORS.
Another beautiful piece. Thanks Andy
WOW! Amazing burl and resin. What a beautiful lamp. Thank you so much for sharing your work.
❤🙃
That effect when the frame rate matches the spin rate… delicious
A beautiful lamp base. Nicely done 👍🏻
Birch burl is so beautiful, markings on this one were awesome and the teal resin sets it off so well.
Im so glad to see someone using their creations for something more than bowls or vases
Omg didn’t have a clue til the lampshade went on. So gorgeous. Wow!
what a lovely piece... congratulations on your project... AWESOME!!
What keeps me interested in your vids is that l don't know what you're finished product is going to be, unlike some others that show the end product in the thumbnail. Good job!
Beautiful piece. Absolutely gorgeous lamp.
Your taste is outstanding. The colors, the shapes, you bring out the best in each piece. It’s a gift to watch you work!
Thank you
Я смотрела на это, как на чудо какое - то... Завараживающе, потрясающе, до последней минуты не понимаешь, чем все закончится!
Love the colours. I'm a fan of blue and green hues and that mica resin is gorgeous. When the wood gets oiled they just pop together. Beautiful!
A beautiful lamp! WOW, LOVE IT!! ❤️
Thank you so much Andy, I really really love ❤️ this, absolutely stunning and gorgeous too.
I just wanted to say that you helped inspire me to try woodturning. Nothing I have is fancy, but I got a used lathe and some inexpensive tools, I have a bunch of wood in my yard, and I’ve started practicing. Thank you for the unintentional push to try something I probably wouldn’t have otherwise.
Well another fantastic looking project and showing your craftsman ship. Thank you 👏👏👏👏
Hi Andy, Seriously nice piece! Full marks for getting that radius correct BEFORE checking it against the template....that's talent!
Amazing, as always Andy! 💕😊 Just beautiful!
Así con tanta maquinaria....

Beautiful as always. Thanks for sharing.
This lamp ended up looking amazing! I did wonder where you were headed with it at one point but, as always, the journey was so enjoyable. Really nice job, Andy! 💜
It's always a good thing to log in to an Andy Phillip video.
Hi Andy..ur work is amazing.. I watch ur vdos daily and my kids too..am from Pakistan..God bless u and ur family.
Oh, Andy! Aquamarine is my favorite color! Together with the color of the beechwood, this makes me think of the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico.
Always a treat to see you upload. Your videos are calming to watch
That is awesome! You even picked the perfect shade.
From hundreds of subscribers to now, I have been watching every one of your works, learning from your experience, and slowly learning this skill myself. I have also made several things one after another. It feels very clumsy and I hope to get Thank you for your advice! !I come from far away China!!
Absolutely Beautiful !! Great Job!👍
Another stunning piece Andy. Well done.
I love it!! That would look so pretty in a master bedroom!!
I never realized how on point Andy's edits are till I watched some other wood work videos after Andy's.
His clips are short and interesting. The sound is never too sharp (like your listening to dental work), and his movements and methods always feel zen like.
You can definitely watch other wood working videos, but with Andy's its less watching and more of just letting the entrancement overtake you.
Thanks ..Glad you like them 👍
This piece is lovely! Thank you
It's nice to watch yourworkflow. And always in anticipation of something unique😍
Beautiful work Andy 😚😚
This foot looks breathtaking 😱
It has an amazing resemblance to an oasis in the middle of a dry desert 🤩 very cool 🤘🏼

I love seeing the grain that is hidden in these burls. Beautiful piece!
The real heroes are the bearings that support the work at the start of turning
Another fantastic piece. The blue was the perfect choice.
Wow. Beautiful! Congratulations. Excellent job.

Beautiful turning Andy. I like your casting mold, great idea.

I LOVE THIS!!!! So pretty!!!
Growing up in Connecticut and living in New Hampshire, I fell in love with Birch trees. And also started drinking birch beer. Loved it. I know live in Utah and there no birch trees nor birch beer out here. I absolutely loved what you did with the birch burl and adding ( my most favorite color) teal resign was and is an added beauty. Thank you Andy. Absolutely my most favorite video. ❤❤❤
Oh and then turning it into a lamp is an absolute treasure!!
