The video you just posted to the main channel focused on a mall outside of Chicago for one segment and immediately I recognized the layout, architecture and even bad corporate sculpture. Turns out the same company built one of my childhood malls, Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, MD. I recently moved out of the US and the month before I left was actually the last month Lakeforest was in operation. I went there one day and did a complete lap just for nostalgia's sake...most of the stores had been long closed by that point but that same layout, bad sculpture, etc was still there. I definitely have fond memories of visiting the mall with my mother and grandmother as a child. Goofing off to kill time as a teen. As of writing this I think the mall just stands empty, though I hear they have plans to tear it down and build housing. Though it's maybe interesting to note that the original site was a community park and man-made lake, where the mall took its name from...dust to dust etc.
I live near the rich malls (Fashion Island, South Coast Plaza Mall, Spectrum Mall) which are still thriving. If i go to other malls, they're all dead. One that is dead near me is going to have an anime convention in the entire mall.
The Nostalgia Economy is real. I over payed on Taco Bell items simply because they were beloved items I missed. And a few that were before my time were great to get, feeling like I was kind of time traveling. 😂 I’m a big consumer of nostalgia though. Watching old “What It Was Like” videos on social media are like crack to me. 🤣
