Ok - so I tried your method of sanding down first before spraying and I loved it. Another advantage is that it saves on sandpaper, too. Sanding on the filler primer really would gunk up my sandpaper. This was was much better!
Can't thank you enough for these tutorials as I cautiously approach finishing some prints. You're a huge help because of the quality of video and of your instructions. Subbed 👍
this channel deserves way more love than it gets. so much more in depth and care taken in explaining why you need to do certain things and how to do them without making it boring great job and thank you
I prefer Polyester Glazing Putty. (evercoat in the can) It comes with hardener like regular body filler. It's very easy to spread, dries fast and sands really easy. Edit: Also, I always use guide coat after priming. You take some black spray paint and lightly spray over the primer. Basically a dust coat. This will show where you haven't sanded or places that aren't sanded enough. Like some layer lines that you might have missed.
I just received the same Helmet last night and normally I would start but filling then sanding I am going to try the sand prime method . Looks like it works great I have an hour into sanding so far...
Great video. About to tackle an entire Mandalorian Beskar Armor. Not looking forward to the sanding as I too have major pains in my joints, going to Home Depot to buy sponges right now. Great videos btw Kev. Love this.
Amazing Video Series!!!! Used this to paint my Darth Revan helmet & made a project out of it with my girlfriend! Thanks so much for going through all the steps & explaining everything! Can't wait for Halloween! I think this might end up becoming a hobby of mine!
I absolutely love your videos, started watching all of them and even wrote down a sanding instruction set which at the end is the smoothest plastic I ever did. I am stuck on your painting video though. I am making a sword for the first time and I want to make the sword look like actual chrome metal. I’m a little lost on what to use. Should I use a black primer then spray a high gloss black then chrome spray paint? What would you suggest with painting the sword to make it look like metal chrome. I also was going to try some graphite powder when it was all done. What do you suggest??
A friend of mine told me about your videos so I’m trying to learn and so far I really enjoy watching and learning. I was wondering what would you do if the print came out white but I want to be able to see how well the sanding is working?
Absolutely love your videos, you inspired a friend and I to buy mandalorian helmets from VPS and start working on them, using your videos as guides! Are you still planning on making a video for installing a voice amplification system for this helmet? We’re looking to do the same but we’re unsure how exactly to go about it for a helmet like this. Thanks for everything you do!!
I haven’t been able to find the sandable rustoleum primer/filler at my home depot. All they have is the automotive version but it seems to be working like the regular primer/filler
Awesome video Kevin...when I wet sand it seems to remove some of the primer around the edges and corners. Should I apply another coat after wet sanding
I wanted to say your channel is so helpful to me and I want to pick uour brian on some other sanding questions. Is there a way to contact you off channel to ask more detail questions?
I'm getting the Bane V2 mask, and I'm wondering what colors you would use for the helmet/mask if I'm trying to get it to look in the traditional black and white
Is there a difference between the sandable and fillable between the regular filler primer, the regular filler primer says it can be sanded and it is the same brand
Hi Kevin- can you sand indoors with a mask on? Or would you always suggest just doing it outdoors? And how long would you say all the sanding takes in total? Thank you
You can sand indoors, just know it makes A LOT of plastic dust. So if you could have a vent that sucks it outside that would be best. It depends on how smooth the surface is, but I would estimate a good 20 minutes per grit.
I am so glad I came across this video. I just got my first 3D printed Mando armor set and it looks like I have a LOT of sanding ahead of me. Would using a small Black and Decker handheld sander not work or would it burn through the material? Thanks!
Awesome, hope it helps. Check out the red hood series too. You can use an orbital sander, I have. You just need to be careful to to keep it in one place too long and not bear down too hard or you will melt/damage the helmet.
@@3DPrintedProps Awesome! I was hoping you would say that. Can't wait to see the follow up vids. I have a voice changer and some other stuff I want to add. Looks like you are going to touch all the bases!
I finally started on my bucket and this guide has been so helpful! The only question I have is how do you know when to stop sanding and move on to the finer grit? I hear that screeching noise with the 80 grit as I move across the lines. Do you keep sanding until you can't hear that noise or just enough to rough up the surface? Thank you!
Hello, I let it air dry so I don't get any cloth or paper dust on the helmet. Drying depends on temp and humidity but if its warm and dry out just a couple hours. But I mostly wait till the next day.
Not sure why, but every time I’ve used bondo it never hardened like it’s supposed to. Any thoughts on why that might be? It’s a new tube that I’ve only had for a few months.
isn't a viking helmet cultural appropriation? 😘 sorry.. to be serious, would it not make sense to print in ASA or something that can be smoothened first with asethone?
This is the most comprehensive tutorial I've seen on sanding 3d prints I've seen. Thanks for posting!
Thanks man, I appreciate it. :)
super in-depth tutorial!! sooo clutch. Been using ur sand, fill and prime technique for all of my prints and they always turn out great!
Thanks man. Glad it helps.

Nice one, Kevin - one of the most impressive helmets I've seen for a while!
Thanks, Pete over at Villainous Prop Shop designed and printed it...I'm just doing the finishing. :)
Awesome! Just got started on my first mando helmet 3d print and this was exactly what I needed. Perfect timing!

Oh. That sounds cool. I'll have to try it. Thanks.
what brand of polyester putty do you use?
@@user-xg8sz4dr9n Evercoat.
Sanding first will give a better mechanical adhesion. Then the fillers and paint will stick better.
👍👍💯💯👍👍

I have this helmet currently printing and then your vid popped up in my feed. Lol
This is great! I’m about to start a Power Ranger kit that I’m doing myself and this is really going to help with the helm! Cheers!

nice tutorial, how about small prints? do you have any tips for sanding, filling and priming small prints?

I can’t find the filler sandable primer on amazon, can i use another spray ?
Sure, any primer will work, but the filler/sander gives you a thicker coat you can sand.

You can get it on Amazon too. Super easy check out the links.
if you have a tractor supply try checking therr
Villainous is great
hey are we going to see you paint it aswell?
Yep, Unfortunately I fractured my elbow and have been out of commision for a while. Should be able to start up again soon.
How long do I have to wait to let the 2-in- 1 filler and sandable primer dry in order to sand it again?
Awesome video Kevin...when I wet sand it seems to remove some of the primer around the edges and corners. Should I apply another coat after wet sanding

Love this video. Can this process be done with screen cast resin helmets or only 3D prints?? TIA
I think those horns should represent the Mythosaur horns (?)

Thanks for uploading this. Currently sanding mandarlorian bracers and it has the same fine details 7:16, did you just use that needel file to sand it?
Can I use a normal automotive primer, since where I live I can't find a 2n1 primer?
Yes. U just don't want. To sand it.
I'm getting the Bane V2 mask, and I'm wondering what colors you would use for the helmet/mask if I'm trying to get it to look in the traditional black and white
That bondo putty doesn't wash away when you use soap and water to remove the dust?
Link to part 2 please, thanks.

So I’m currently working on a PLA helmet I printed. Should I seal the inside with primer and paint?
Great videos! Give this guys channel a follow!
What are you using as a helmet stand? And, what is holding the helmet up?
Seems like the print itself quality is not the best because time is saved using bigger nozzle why those crazy big lines.
Do you recommend this sanding process for armor too? And i see people sand it with water as well, should i do it too or?

Australian equivalent of bondo and spot putty?
after washing it do you just let it air dry? how long if u do?

Should I not used the bondo in the can? I even took an orbital sander to it and it’s barley even sanding it. Feel like the print is a bust now..
You can use bondo, use a lower grit to get the bondo down, then go to a finer grit.
I'vI've seen other people use a mouse or rotary sander. Is that a bad idea?
I have done that, but I need to be really careful. You can easily melt and or go through that too layer and break into the infill.
Not sure why, but every time I’ve used bondo it never hardened like it’s supposed to. Any thoughts on why that might be? It’s a new tube that I’ve only had for a few months.
The only thing I think it could be is you're not adding enough hardener, or maybe temperature and humidity.
Hmmm. Ok. Thank you. I’ll try out some different things.
Make it reflective!
Not this one. I have another idea. I am going to do a chrome helmet soon, its on the printer now. Going to be the Peacemaker helmet. :)
No wet sand?
How tf do I know what grit to use
