Joe and Mario Duplantier's mom passed away after a year-long battle fighting cancer, during the recording of Magma. Their loss inspired the spiritual direction that Gojira take on the album and is even reflected in its title track "Magma". "Magma actually refers to the lava when it is still in a volcano, it's the blood of the Earth at the point where it is boiling and ready to explode," Joe Duplantier explained to The Independent. "We put the sun on the cover to symbolically represent the big bang, the source of life. Not only that, but if you remove the 'g' from Magma it spells Mama and we see the 'g' as a representation of Gojira."
Cool
Tremendous
thanks for sharing thats oddly connected and thats one thing that keeps me listening to gojira over and over is the similar feeling of interconnectivity with everything that they seem to touch base with in their lyrics a lot..
Thanks for the explanation
holy shit bro
I think that Gojira found the pick of destiny and never lost it.
Amen hallajuah
It's not that they didn't lose it, the devil just liked their sound so much he broke the covenant and let them keep it for free.
😂😂😂😂😂
I wanna liked this but it’s at 420 likes & I don’t wanna ruin it

Lyrics for this masterpiece:
Analyze this chemistry
Producing poison
And creeping in your veins
For the love of blood
The poison slowly spreads
Through the body and the mind
Close your eyes and drop your things
Be ready to fly
You are now, high
In the sun, burn
You're away, alive
On the moon, round
After walking all the miles
Consumed into your bones
And breathing all the dust
Of the desert land
I know that all along
You were doing it for absolution
It's written in your eyes
You are now, high
In the sun, burn
You're away, alive
On the moon, round
Away
Just want to fly away, always higher
Away
Embrace the light on the other side

@@bartomiejz151 but I found it right after clicking on that riff in this comment 😂 before I haven't noticed... Even though I've heard this song for maybe 10-20 times
Freakin amazing
This is a creeper album. The kind that creeps up on you after you listen to it a few times. After it fully blossoms within you, it will forever be one of your favorites. These kinds are the best......
zazz82 The whole vibe of this song(the whole album even)is meant to be depressing. I feel like it accomplishes that goal, and exceeds it with beautiful riffs and melodic harmonics. The album as a whole is one that will forever be one of my personal favorites. The fact that it was for the recently deceased mother of Joe and Mario makes the eerie but graceful feel that much more prominent.
Cliche comment inbound!!!
I have a hard time listening to other metal since I got my hands on this album. I'm not a metalhead, I float in and out of listening to it.
aw man
Phenomenal is the correct word to describe this album's celestial brilliance
Agreed
I'm slowly turning to Magma after the 5th consecutive listening. How brilliant is this shit? I haven't been so struck by music since I found out about Death.
And that was like 15 yrs ago...
Glad you made it. Rock on 🤟
Same bro. I love this band. And they are alive!
Weirdly enough, I hear a lot of the band Death in some of the guitar and drum riffs of Gojira. That, and both bands were/are great at making really odd sounds for metal music sound heavy and also pretty at the same time
Me who discovered both within a year of each other:🤩

Good God, Gojira has done it again. This album is PHENOMENAL.
Are you serious? It's woeful
+locust7777 uhhhh, are YOU serious mate?
Please explain me all the hate against the black album, i've never understood it
+Johncowk it’s just trendy to hate on it.
+Johncowk they practically dropped their thrash Sound and made a pop album by comparison. Listen to the twang/ country accents that Bob Rock pushed in there. It's a huge lesson in why you don't use pop trash producers(Bob Rock produced för Motley Crue). It's not worth the time it would take for me to lay out all the arguments against it. But as an album it lacks so much, especially when compared to their earlier works.
Everyybody talking about solo or riffs, it's the chorus that makes this song so good to me
For me it is literally every single second and not a second less.
I'm ready to throw myself into a volcano now and feel the sweet heat consume me til i am no more.
Good for you
Yeah well the whole song it's so cool
I agree it's one of their best choruses
0:42 I love how the pinch harmonic sounds in the background and prepares you when the riff starts loudly at 0:46
great ear!
there's a bit of Led Zeppelin in this song. Love it. Gojira is one of the most interesting bands of the last 20 years.
I can hear the Zeppelin now.
The next Gojira album will be the biggest thing ever in metal history. You heard it here first
nah thats shuggah
@@monkeyrobotsinc.9875 nah it will be metallica or may be slipknot, that too in 2019-21...though i like gojira more

@@thomasoneill4386 Amen brother
Gojira is definitely moving in a more melodic direction with this album. That sound they got in the intro to Esoteric Surgery and The Axe and other songs (where the guitar picks really fast in sync with the double bass) wasn't in this album, and that is one my favorite things they did musically, but I can't complain really. This album kicks ass in its own way and like I said, it's definitely more melodic and emotional. They also experimented and used a lot more clean vocals in this album, but I like it. GOJIRA!!!
You can understand music, I like it.
The death of their mother, probably heavily influenced the end result, sound and theme of the album. Heard somewhere that they threw away a lot of songs and wrote new ones because of it, and that it is more or less dedicated to her. But it really is a masterpiece nonetheless!
A good few people that I know really dislike this album, sure going into the album I wanted the heaviest music of the universe, but after hearing it, I am glad that they didn't do that. This is heavy on a whole new level, lyrically anyway. Also, the bridge/breakdown in this song is so fucking good!
I equte their change in sound to be very much like Mastodons change in sound. And i fuckin love every second of both bands 🤘🤘
@@JungleOrBust
You are now my favorite random stranger on the internet. Please take this award.
The riff at 03:32 is one of the best things i have ever heard. Damn
Yes, top level.
This whole album just sound like the world is coming to its end and in that atmosphere it just makes this album a fucking masterpiece
This song makes me appreciate my mother even more. She went through hell to raise me and my brother. I'm forever grateful to her for allowing us to pursue music.
So this was my first Gojira album. I knew nothing about the band before purchasing this on a recommendation and playing it.
AND NOW I WANT MORE
Hello, I am a Steatoda Bipuntacta and I am gonna eat you now
Terra incognita
Check out Godzilla - Possessed their first album before they were Gojira.
It's like fucking CRACK!!! But... would I really know??? Hmm...
@@kafir0666 They technically were Gojira by that time already depending on your phonetics : ^)
*Sorry about the dislikes those are my neighbors*
@The more you cry, the more we laugh! He probably just put the music THAT strong.
I'd hang all of em
Evil people!!!
Tell them this song is about a celebration of moms.
Hilarious
MAgMA is the real title for me.
Damn man :0 I didn't notice it :(
HAHA
What?
The album is about their Mom. So it’s Mama but they put a g in the middle
@@owengaming4817 For guess what? Gojira !
I've seen Gojira around, here and there, but never really picked em up. Finally, after hearing "Stranded", I picked up this album and... man... what totally weird vibe (In a good way) Going from some hard crunching lines from Stranded to this... which sounds like im being whisked away on clouds, in a extremely trippy lucid dream. I saw on another video where Gojira was compared to a fine red wine; its weird at first but after a while, it becomes tasty and something looked forward to.
I can attest to that.
This song is a fucking masterpiece. It's like
Metallica, Opeth, and Dream Theater had a baby.
iwtmltyb I can clearly hear the Metallica groove at some parts.
I hear some Voivod circa 1989 here too.
And Tool, being Gojira reminds me of technical metal. And I'm a technical musician myself, which is why I love this band.
Twibby Vengeance
absolutely! there is so much tool in gojira :) i love them
It's absolutely none of those, are you just naming bands you know?
It's one of the saddest songs I ever heard. Listen to the chorus. You can clearly understand that the song is inspired by the death of their mother.
Really
I know... Sometimes I forgot some letters from the words :D
Attila Mészáros Almost this entire album basically was. (Particularly The Shooting Star)
How the hell you figure out those stuff :D
I didn't even pay attention at first but damn now its depressing
This album is fucking awesome. it got me into Gojira I live under a rock and totally missed these guys.
Same here 👍
Huh... & I thought *I* was fashionably late, discovering them in '09.
_welcome to the heaviest matter in the universe_
@@unkatruk9932 well I'm not discovering them now but now starting to get into them
@@unkatruk9932 i only found out in late 2021
There's something about this band and their sound that is so refined.........it's almost as though they've been around for a hundred years to create this music.
Blows my mind that the intro to this song is the same intro they've been playing to songs like Oroborus at concerts for *years.* It's like we finally get to hear the full song that's been hidden away after all this time. Awesome.
How the hell can someone say that this song isn't powerfull or awesome.
Your rocks Gojira.
Someone who dont know gojira or who dont know music
It's the repeat listenings..there's a deepness in the lyrics and sound ...
This is the most beautiful song on this amazing album. That riff, especially toward the end sounds so anguished. So much feeling behind it.
Kansas462 that riff towards the end is literally so good it makes me want to cry
The outro lead part along with the chug reminds me of Criss Oliva of the band Savatage every time I hear it
This song has clear king crimson/tool influence and i love it.
my fav metal band by far
I was looking for some high quality musicianship, that you'd expect from grindcore, when I came across Mastadon talking about these guys. Definitely not grind but these guys are phenomenal musicians, they are mind blowing good. Heavy riffs, well orchestrated dynamics and technique, they fill that hole in my soul where a personality should be.
Oof
now that's a song that is never gonna be played live
Eduardo Melo it's sad
Why not?
Sarah, the verse is really difficult to play consistently.
These boys have zero trouble playing ANYTHING consistantly....period.

Mom passed January 26th 2020... I picked up gojira back in 2014 from one of her boyfriends lol.... Been listening to them since. This album carried me through the worst and saddest days of my life. Specifically this song, after my mom passed there were many long night cruises listeng to this entire album and this song specifically. I will say that when you're going through something like that this Band will send you through emotional turmoil in a good way.... I've cried my eyes out to this song and also felt like I was in top of the world when listening to it. I appreciate gojira so much I can't even explain and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them. ❤️🤘👁️
i just cant stop fuckin smiling
used to hate this song, now I can't stop listening to it, I don't know why but I just love that guitar solo
exactly the same
i guess, we needed to get used to it xD
Me too ^^
Thank you, Gojira.
3:25 building up to the riif is just perfection
Those harmonics are beautiful
Probably the most underrated metal band in the entire universe. For me, it's Gojira and then everyone else. Their composition and sound is unmatched.

I have always liked Gojira, but this album has struck a cord with me...absolutely LOVE IT! I can't stop listening to it.
I keep getting back to this song. It is so powerful I can't even explain it.
This is the most underrated Gojira song ever.
2:04 Gojiradon
Ha! I see what u did there :P
Mastojira.
Mastodon - The czar. Skip to 4:45 of that song and you'll hear why. It was the first thing I thought when I heard this song. A typical Mastodon-style riff.
great minds are alike e.e
+Billy McClain It's not so much a specific song. There's a lot of Crack the Skye riffs going on.
I'm not gonna listen to this until tomorrow when I BUY the album haha
Me too man, the store opens in 1.5 hours for me
Man that's some self control
+Kirisute Gomen self control i don't have haha, I went to the store to get it but they didn't have it so I kinda gave in and listened to half of it haha

Fun fact: The solo is made of only One Note
The third note with pinch harmonics
I can hear different pitches of harmony which make it more a little more than that. But youre right all one note in different pitch
Being a musician I understand that is super difficult but knowing how great these guys are i bet they all got it in one take at the studio
You mean that scary riff playing?
@@howunbecoming926 it's the overtone scale. Many Mongolian throat singers play it using their mouths. That's why on Magma it sounds so exotic and spiritual
Every gojira album,,, doesn't it make you travel in a world
I'm in love with the subtle tambourine throughout the song, I cannot be the only one to notice it, it does add some melancholy to it, somehow
3:46
Fuck, that's heavy
"Embrace the light on the other side"
