Yeah you are correct definitely does not need shimmed. The best camera shot you had looked as if still not engaging far enough. Was it shimmed at that point?

Thanks so much for writing back - and no, it was not shimmed for any of those video shots. Frustrating. I guess one of the earlier starters began the damage and the flywheel just got worse and worse. I just hate to think of replacing it all and still having the same problem.

Not the fly wheel… it’s the starter. Make sure that it is the manual or auto.. they have different throws.

I just found your channel. I'm having an issue with my 73 F100 eating ring gears. I have the 360 with 184 tooth ring gear. It was an automatic and I switched it over to a manual transmission (T-18). My new flywheel has a 184 tooth ring gear as well. It didn't chew the gears before, but now it does. It looks as if the gears aren't meshing deep enough, like the centerline of the starter is too far away from the centerline of the crank. The engagement is plent deep. I guess it's the joy of having classic cars. 😅
Could it be that your trans is starting out in 2nd? Dad's 66 T-Bird has a 3 speed automatic, but it skips 1st and starts out in 2nd, then shifts to 3rd.

Welcome to the club of chewed ring gears, Chip! I’ve since changed transmissions and it still does it. It seems like the starter keeps trying to stay engaged for a half a second or so after the engine takes off. It’s definitely frustrating.

@@williamtunnell I'm sorry you're still having troubles with yours. I've never had this much trouble before. It should be this hard. 😅

I really enjoyed your video although I am not a mechanic. Just have a similar problem with my F100 1973 240 ci. Do you have a name of a company that sells the flywheel I need. The autoparts store in my small town has not had any luck finding one. Tks

I’ve bought mine from Northport Auto in Northport, AL. I’m sure they’d ship you one. I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Hi, you where able to find exactly the issue? I’m having the same problem with the same truck, have lost 3 starters right away and even put a 180 teeth flywheel and nothing…

Actually, I have not. I thought I had a better flywheel and it just started grinding again the other day. So frustrating. I believe my starter is staying engaged just a little longer than it should which I don’t know what to do about that! 👎

Do you have any of those hats that you would be willing to sell? Since I’m a Tunnell, I would love to buy one. I’m from the Tunnell’s in Tennessee originally. I now live in Ohio

I actually need to get some more hats made. When I do, I’ll definitely let you know. I’ve had others asking so I need to get some more. Please make some videos of your truck too. I’d love to watch and subscribe!
