Boy, I LOVED how they changed up the chord progression on the back half of the 2nd verse. Just adds so much more texture and interest to an already great tune.
Can't believe I just learned about Karl's passing today. Goddammit. First saw WP at Toad's in New Haven back in '86. Even though he got a big taste of success in the 90s, IMO, he was still woefully underrated and underappreciated. Been waiting for new music from him for 20 years, thinking it was always right around the corner. Guess it's not to be. This one really hurts.
Bought the first three recordings when they were first released, Lp and cds, they were a Huge part of myself and my wife's soundtrack of our younger lives!!! Life moves on, takes you to other places? We'd forgotten, shame on us just how Exceptional they are!! Since his Sad, untimely death a few weeks ago they've been on constant repeat in the House and the car , Just F*cking Beautiful!!! So sad,but the Rainbow comes for us all at sometime! Just thank you for the Music man! We will never forget you!! Xx
At 4:20 when they keep repeating falsetto "Woo-hoo-hoos" because they're riding the wave of the best version of a classic song and don't want it to end. RIP Karl. What a voice (Jagger, Prince, Dylan, Eric Burdon combined).
WOW! at first i thought he must be miming this, it is way too good, but he is definitely playing this live, absolutely stunning! What an awesome song, and what a message!
I shocked myself by remembering all the words and every "woo a hoo hoo", and "woo ooh hoo hoo" in the original version. Karl was HOT back then. I also like "Is it like today?"
Thank you Karl for your beautiful music. So so grateful I got to see you twice at the Triple Door in Seattle, and talk to you and your son. Your music is such a gift to this world. Thank you. Rest in Peace
Karl is such a cool dude & way, way above & beyond most artists of his generation. We nearly lost him a few years back when he suffered an anyeurism ( I probably spelled that wrong) but he pulled through thankfully, & I saw 'world party' in cambridge a couple of years ago, comprising of just three blokes & they were awesome!
I'll bet it was a very good show one you'll not forget, those are the ones you'll never forget thank you for your memory. Hang own to it you have something very special. I enjoyed it thank u very much !
Definitely the best version of this song. I saw this on the tv and was hooked straight away. Excited the very next day I went into Manchester to see if there was any records to do with this band and there I’m the shop.. a whole album called Private Revolution by World Party. I got home played it from start to finish.every song in the album I loved. It’s been like that ever since with this band
Not enough charisma, stage presence, chick magnetism and song catalog is my educated guess . But I remember when this track hit and I was like WOW this act is destined to go super nova but they where a little late to the “party” and had stiff competition ie INXS U2 Prince etc etc .
We're setting sail to the place on the map from which no one has ever returned Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool by the light of the crosses that burned. Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace and the gold and the cotton and pearls It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need. You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby. You will pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow You will pay tomorrow Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools. No, no Oh, save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools I want to run and hide right now Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea They will leave you drifting in the shallows or drowning in the oceans of history Traveling the world, you're in search of no good but I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like you knew you would Using all the good people for your galley slaves as you're little boat struggles through the warning waves, but you don't pay You will pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with this ship of fools Where's it comin' from? Where's it goin' to now? It's just a It's just a ship of fools
i was 25 at okla state when this came out. i was there, blasted out in tune with the vibe that karl was kickin. the time is now gone. keep all the pop crap for yourself. this is my ship and ive run it all over!!!
great song...top band...and a very interesting piece of moden pop history. Guy Chambers paying his dues before going off and writing Robbie Williams' big hits...Carl sadly suffered from a debilitating aneurism, and Robbie then ( at Guy's behest I imagine) recorded Karl's ' She's the One' which kept Karl in money during his times of illness. Ah yes...and this Dave Ruffy dude ;)...a mighty fine drummer who contributed on some of the waterboys' greatest tunes in the 80's.
Are there any 5-7 member bands these days? They play, sing, move around a little. Everything now is about choreography. I just want to see and hear instruments and vocals!!!
I'm 34 and heard this song recently on an alt. music from 80's station(I'm sure you know the one-on cable, more music I think)& remembered it because of that great chorus-"save me,save me from tommorrow whoo-ooo-ooo.I don't ...I truly didn't remember how great the 70's&80's were 4 seminal bands& the like until 2005 thanks 2 a burgeoning youth movement sick of today's "music".I truly regret not appreciating all the choices we had. It's great the youth of today do.
After watching the decline of music at the Grammy’s tonight, I had to play this to remember what great Live Music was like! #savemefromtomorrow
Thank you, Karl. A thousand times over; thank you.
This great tune has always given me goosebumps, and always will.
ship of fools one of my favourite vocals of all time - moves me every time ❤️
Sometimes..not very often, you come across a huge talent..R.I.P. Karl..thank you Sir for the great tunes..XX
WHAT? Holy shit. Devastated.
It's been a few days and I'm still shocked and upset . Was a Waterboys and World Party fan . Such great music
One of the most underated songs of the 80s.Wow so many memories
Criminally underrated talent ❤
Karl is awesome
100% for sure
Boy, I LOVED how they changed up the chord progression on the back half of the 2nd verse. Just adds so much more texture and interest to an already great tune.
Just read 📚 your comment on the change of chord 😂❤
Yes, this is the best version I've found and that change up in the 2nd verse is a classy move.
@@genepoole1771 Just saw the news that Karl passed on March 10. Devastating.
Really brilliant change...just enough to add some real flavor to it!!!❤❤ love it. Bummed about Karl
@@MrJimmyoc00 Yes. That one small change makes such a big difference. Yeah, very sad about Karl. He just always seemed like such a sweet soul.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Omg, it's a classic and will never get old! Never has left my top 10
Is anyone still listening

Props to the musicians, the sound crew, and the camera crew. 👍

This song is very good thirty something years later, and Very Telling in Our Current Time.
One of the things I love about this video is you can see they all love this song as much as I do.

karl wallinger you will be forever missed ..x
Great band. Shone briefly but brightly. RIP Karl.
I shocked myself by remembering all the words and every "woo a hoo hoo", and "woo ooh hoo hoo" in the original version. Karl was HOT back then. I also like "Is it like today?"
Listen to his Ballad of The Little Man. It's even better than this
@@danielfronc4304 I made a note of it, BUT, I find it hard to believe I will like it more than "ship of fools".
Such a great song!
I want to be your super hero
Since we were both Athiests, I'll just say, he had a huge impact on me. That's why I'm here, at 57, remembering. Life is a moment. Make it count.
One of the best songwriters! RIP
Amazing song , pure genius
And so relevant today
RIP Karl Wallinger

Sooo freaking GOOOD. One of the best of ALL TIME.

Ship of Fools and Message in the Box are two of my absolute faves!!!

Karl=talent. He is a brilliant musican. Thanks for the post.
Love this version....so amazing.
Extraordinary...astonishingly accurate though the years. Never been that keen on pop with a message but this is so brilliant.
Not really into all the other stuff.... But this song... THIS SONG is a song writing masterclass.
Karl was brilliant I wish there was more this good.
Just awesome!L the album “World Party“ always puts me in a happy place with the best memories of my life.
Hot stuff. Pumping live version. I'm bummed out that I never saw them in person at the top of their game.
Just brilliant, and perfect timing for the COP meeting in Glasgow ! "But you don't pay - you're going to pay tomorrow"...today, actually.

I used to hear this band on now-defunct alternative rock stations in Pittsburgh in the 80's and 90's.
Great song & maybe appropriate for our times. Man, wish I'd seen them live.
me too
One of the best songs to come from the 80s. Always love when it comes on the radio! And yes I did say RADIO.
Just so happy to watch a live song that i love whenever the mood hits me
Great Song!! Great band with Dominic Miller
excellent live version
Great song & maybe appropriate for our times. Man, wish I'd seen them live.
wallinger has such a jagger tone to his voice.
yea, if Jagger could sing like this but he never could
@@shanobat5484hahaha
Get outta my head!
I just realized he's playing a right handed guitar upside down ala Jimmie Hendrix.
and the strings are not turn upside down he plays it upside down
How talented is that
Best song! In every way!
What a tune. Karl Wallinger is cool as fuck. To be 15 again listening to this...

For that very reason, too much talent. Not everyone got them. Those that did knew how talented he was. Loves his waterboys band too, good stuff.

Had the pleasure of seeing them live @TheAstoria 1986 good times😀
World party didn’t form until 1986 when Karl left The Waterboys.

I've watched this video many times now and I've decided.........I can't find a single thing bad about it at all. Its awesome in every way.
👍👏😊♥️ Thanks for showing
These left handed guitarists that took up a right handed guitar have contributed so much! Love this song!
Such a great song!
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Great live version of a really great and today "relevant" song! One of my Favorites by the way!!
Damn, we’ve been sailing on this Ship of Fools for too long - apropos song
The bassist is a hero.
Me too I don't want to sail with these ship of fools remember Captain Jesus is truly running his world. Captan , Captain
Awesome Song Karl, I like it very much.
This is an all timer!
You'll be gone tomorrow ... really was hoping to see him play live once more.
Excellent tune! One of my favorite tunes from the 80's!
This song has a kind of a ELO sound to it but still sounds like world party, it doesn't get the respect it deserves, great song RIP Karl.
What a talent.
just so good...
Back here in the virus 2020 year. How profetic song! Big regards from Argentina.
Loved this song!!!°
I dig this song, but the followup album, "Goodbye Jumbo" blew it out of the water! Every song was fantastic!
Great song & maybe appropriate for our times. Man, wish I'd seen them live.
Lost and adrift
Incredible!
anybody reminded of Zevon visually and lyrically?
Visually with glasses only. They are unique in sound and this tune is awesome!
did not see this group but saw the 1990 tour at the Vic in Chicago. Blown away.

Fabulous band !Saw them in Glasgow Arches venue many years ago, one of the best gigs I have ever attended.
I was at the gig too and they were just incredible - mind-blowing really.
Classical song, excellent performance
great music - great band......
Most Underated Jam.. Open your Eyes an ears people... Just sayin........
Not many live performances will i Like.. Love this one.. Karl is the Man....
An MTV classic video...always a buzz when it came on
Fantastic version. Even when the band screws up chords at 2 mins in, the ship rights itself, and the ending repeated falsetto refrain is beautiful!!
