- Floods have devastated two-thirds of Slovenia. Many villages are cut off from the outside world. The Balkan country is struggling with the worst natural disaster in its history.

poor benedickt and the other hundreds or thousands of other slovenians! I pray for you! Brave soldiers and other citizens are helping the affected, I hope you all can help and support eachother! Hugs from Argentina, Brave and hard-working Slovenians! I've seen pics of Slovenia and it appears to be a beautiful country, I hope to visit someday. I´ll pray for the Slovenians and I hope you emerge even stronger and better!!
The number of natural disasters happening all over the world is just crazy.
Climate scientists foretold all this at least 40 years ago when I first heard the warnings but oil companies and governments didn't want to know. Misinformation was spread partly because today's Scientists tend to say " as far as we know" and " the data we have now tells us....". This is too subtle and was used by Petrochemical PR departments to sow the seeds of doubt that it is our burning of petrochemicals. Etc.
Norway had flooding at the same time as Slovenia now.
still less than the man-made disaster in eastern Ukraine. The rebuilding will take years if not decades.
If anyone can fix a problem, it's the Solvanians: solving problems is what they do best!

My heart is breaking for the people of Slovenia. I visited a few years ago and fell in love with the beauty of the country and its warm friendly people.
Solvenia. Journalistic professionalism at its finest.
This is why we need to build berms and swales on contour all over Europe: to stop flooding and prevent forest fires. Each berm/swale are about 2-10 meters apart depending on the slope of the land and other conditions. The filter the water and keep streams flowing weeks longer than they normally would in drier areas. A great jobs program that saves lives and property as well.

Would be good to have a computer simulation for every region in the world of how heavy rainfall effects the water outflow of rivers, valleys and creek streams.
Could be subject of university studies. That could give an answer of at which locations protection measures are required.

This is so tragic and I know how it feels . I have been the victim of several floods in my time . He has lost his workshop but there will be plenty of work for a carpenter rebuilding . I hope insurance will replace his tools of trade . So in one way he is far better off than someone who has lost a job that will not be connected with any recovery . I hate floods . I lost everything once and had to walk miles and miles down the river searching for lost stuff all I found was one wedding photo stuck on a barbed wire fence .

Unless you are a castle or manor owner, few people can fork out the money to have new windows built exactly like they were 100 years ago.

When you build a structure next to a river or any body of water, you are taking a chance...even if it's a once a century chance. Events like these have occurred for millenia and we know from the old stories, but we just choose to ignore history.

Slovenia is a mountainous country, so what does it mean that 2/3 is flooded? Does this mean the valleys and lowland? Or the populated areas? I’m really asking. It’s a question that came up with the floods in Pakistan too.
It was heavy rain 2 days in a row , there were rivers flooding all over the country so some roads became unpassable but nothing to extreme like this news said 2/3 of the country ^^, but mountain areas on north of the country was a different story, when so many rain dropped in so short amount of time ,not only water but also the mud came down in rivers
