I lived in Brighton in 2001 for a few years, and kept seeing Captain in a pub and on the street, but never had the nerve to talk to him. One night out with my mate, we were both drunk, and Captain came walking past. This time we chatted with him, and he was so friendly, and he was having fun talking with 2 random fans on the street. I kept on bumping into him after that, and we got on first name terms. In conversation, I called him Captain, but he said 'call me Ray'. He's got a light hearted fun energy about him. He's a good guy. I originally bumped into him in 1995, at an Animal Rights party in Shoreham, where his band The Space Toad Experience, was playing to raise money for the legal defence of the protesters who were being arrested every day at the demo, Ban Live Exports, from Shoreham Harbour. Reckon Captain would be a blast to go out for a drink with! 😊
I can imagine the sound producer for this interview pulling his hair out every time Dave pulls his coat over his lav mic.

'Strawberries' was a great follow-up, 'Under the Floor Again's one of the best things they ever did!
Brilliant album. Showed that they had musical chops. Saw them live that year and they were dreadful.

I was at the Trex, Damned gig at Manchester Apollo..... The Damned were an amazing and I bought Neat Neat Neat the following day...... For me..... the Damned were f%: %7)ing amazing and still are
LOVE T.Rex! Must have been an amazing show, especially as Bolan's last tour.
@@beltanetrex It was ... T. REX were doing the "Dandy in the underworld" album tour with the Damned as support... The gig was at Manchester Apollo... It was all old style cinema type seating. The first few rows of seats collapsed and broke up as the as the audience stormed towards the stage when Bolan appeared... It was in May 1977.. He died in the car crash in September 1977...We saw Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies outside at the back of the apollo a while before the concert...
met these 2 lastweek in sydney....fantastic blokes i must say .Captain took the time to get a propper pen so he could sign my promo poster.

Captain I missed Ya, Honor to see you Dave, you are both are Legends to me. I will catch another show when you come back to New England....Thank you for your music ..!!!. I was just about to write Strawberries when I saw that you beat me to it, I didn't know it was a toilet before this interview though, I just knew it had a subtle noise between tracks.
What a good smelling record it still is.
That's the album Strawberries? I thought so because there is a strange cool sound between the songs towards the end of the record. Never would have known it was a toilet.
A friend of mine, a carpet fitter, fitted a carpet for Dave Vanian. Somewhere in Hornsey, I remember he said there were skulls and coffins in his house.
I wonder if it's the same carpet they talk about :D

I saw an interview where he said that he got that nickname from being a bit reckless when he would get drunk.... Kinda like calling a fat guy "Tiny".
The story I heard was that they were playing (at the very beginning of the band, they still hadn't found any monikers, which were necessary anyway because they were all signing on, perceiving Unemployment Benefit, and if they had used their real names they would have been fined and had the benefits cut off), and on a tour bus with other bands. Ray Burns was wearing a jacket with epaulettes and he was messing around going "Ladies and gentlemen, this bus works perfectly and it is all under control. We are all going to crash in two minutes" and so on, and someone from another band shouted "look, it's fucking Captain Sensible", and the nickname stuck....

Punk wasn't violent, I went to loads of gigs between 1977 and 1985 and never saw violence. People were boisterous but not violent. The media talked shite

Toaday's music sounds like it is produced on the same pre-set every time, the real organic musicians dont seem to get a look in these days
