Trip number four will be coming up for me during the Summer of 2020. I think I'm going to start from Windigo this time along the Feldtmann Lake Trail, ending up at Rock Harbor. I've never backpacked that route from Windigo to Moskey. I've backpacked the entire length of the Minong Ridge Trail twice before, the last time was a few days after your video. That first beaver pond damn was really a challenge!
Very awesome Matt and Ashley. I don’t know who was more excited about this trip, you guys or me. LOL Really looking forward to all of your trip. Thanks for sharing this “teaser” and I’ll be riding shotgun for the duration. ATB Mike
I am really enjoying "watching" you guys' backpacking trip to Isle Royale! Come see me in Southern Oregon and maybe we can hike/backpack some of the PCT, or go to Crater Lake or Lassen!!! Thanks for sharing :)
Skin out weights of 34 and 25, not too bad considering you packed for 10 days and are carrying a few luxury items too, good job! Looks like a great start to an epic trip, looking forward to the next installment!
More amazing than the first videos. Thank you, lots of useful information. We are trying to decide between a 5 night Windigo to Rock Harbor or going into Rock Harbor, taxi to Dasiy Farm and stay there for 3 nights doing day hikes and then 2 nights close to Rock Harbor with more day hikes.
I bet it was nice taking the plane and not having to battle the crowd getting off the boat and on the trail to your first campsite! I have only taken the Ranger III or a boat from MN over. Can't wait to see the rest of your trip; I love IRNP!!
Yes it was. We took the ranger III last year and our experience with crowds was very different. This year we saw almost no one in the first few days. Last year it was crowded bc we were on the ferry schedule. Thanks for watching!!
Howdy guys. I'm headed to Isle Royale in a couple weeks to start my walk from Upper Peninsula Michigan down to Key West (I walked California to Delaware last year). I watched your 2018 trip and it's helped me in anticipating what I'll find. I'll watch your 2017 trip next. I see you also have a Pictured Rocks trip which I'll watch as well. I'm going through there too. I'll be filming my trip as I go along (I did last year's as well). Feel free to subscribe. Quick question: I'm hiking Windigo to Rock Harbor and all my days are low mileage except the last day which is 13.3 mi. from Chickenbone East to Rock Harbor - how is that section?
Sounds like quite the adventure! Both Isle royale and pictured rocks are awesome. You'll love them both. The greenstone isn't as technical as the minong. I would say that section is totally doable. You'll be able to see more of that area in the 2017 series we put out. Personally we are not huge fans of the east chickenbone camp, we have passed it up on both of our trips. West is significantly nicer.
Next time at daisy farm, get up early and take mt. Franklin trail north to this little pond called dead birch. Almost guaranteed to see moose. I met up with George Desort in Chicago and he gave me this tip and sure enough, he was right!
Hey guys we just ran across your videos, and love them! You have made us want to plan an Isle Royal trip! Ashley can you tell me about the blue green hoodie that you wear when you get to camp? What brand is it? It looks nice and cozy!
Awesome. You'll love the island. As for the hoodie, it is a Melanzana microgrid hoodie. They are darn near impossible to find nowadays unless you live in Colorado (where the store is located). We bought them back when you could still get them online, now they are only sold in store. They are super cozy and warm. I basically live in mine.
I sleep on an exped downmat 7, and I am so jealous of the airbag attachment to fill yours. Mine has a hand pump system that is... EXHAUSTING. But it's worth it for me, because the 5.9 R value is worth its weight in gold for my cold bum. LOL
The schnozzel pump bag is awesome! I love how easy it is to fill our pads. I hate hand pumps or blowing them up by mouth. I pair my exped with a z lite sol if it is going to be under 40 degrees. I also suffer from cold butt syndrome! But since switching to the exped/zlite pair I dont have have that problem anymore.
buttwheat75 we have not encountered any mice in the shelters at isle Royale yet! I haven’t heard of them having issues like the AT. I’m sure it’s a possibility but not nearly as bad in my experience. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Oh I think it was $7 or $8 for an 8ounce canister. So a slight markup but not too bad. We did not finish the canister and ended up giving the remainder to another group of hikers as we were walking up to meet our plane ride home.
I am not sure on the actual model. It is an older hat that I bought several years ago. It was made by outdoor research. I think it is very similar to their halo series of hats. It has a pertex shield logo stamped on the outside and taped seams on the inside with a dark under brim which I really love for sunny days. I believe it was marketed as a rain cap but I wear it all the time regardless of the weather. It also scrunches up and packs away nice.
Have been there three times, very beautiful, I miss it.
Dan Cooper the island has a way of calling you back. I miss it so much already.

Thanks for the comment Mike. More to come!

Wow the PCT would be an experience for sure. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy it.

Yes. We were very happy with our packweights. A lot of thought went into our packs. Don’t worry it gets better! We had some really fun/wild days.
that is a beautiful hike! I wish spring would hurry up.
OutofDoorsTV it’ll be here soon!

I would go for the full experience and backpack instead of day hikes but that’s just me. All depends on what you are comfortable doing.
I'm leaning that way but all that rain scares me.
Joni McEachern embrace the soak! Haha. It’s not that bad. Come prepared. Pack light. Do a few backpacking trips in the rain, closer to home first.

I’ve heard this! Haven’t seen one in that area yet! But won’t be our last time through there. I’m sure we will eventually.

@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife I was afraid you were going to tell me I wouldn't be able to find one! Bummer!
Sorry!! Good luck with your trip planning.

Swampwalker! He posts on the UL subreddit sometimes
yea! I have commented back and forth with him before on r/ul. It was cool meeting him in person.
As always, great videos....do the shelters have mice issues like on the AT or are they relatively vermin free?

Hi Matt and Ashley, when you got to Isle Royale, do you remember how much the fuel was at the store? TIA!
Oh I think it was $7 or $8 for an 8ounce canister. So a slight markup but not too bad. We did not finish the canister and ended up giving the remainder to another group of hikers as we were walking up to meet our plane ride home.
What kind of hat are you wearing, ashley? Looks light and airy. I normal use use an old mesh back or a fishing hat but i like the ball cap style best.

Hi, Mr. Matt, may I ask when you two went fishing on Isle Royale, how did you get the fishing permit? Thank you for your time.
We live in Michigan and regularly fish so we had already purchased our licenses on the mainland. Most outdoors stores sell licenses.
