    Hiya, so in regards to connecting to a pc do I usb out of the tr-8s and the tb3 or do I just usb out of one of them ?
    I did have a behringer td3 midi'd to my tr-8s USB'd to my pc and then audio to my mixer . That did work but I wasn't sure if it was correct or not .. any advice would be great thanks.

      Hi @chris wilson
      It really depends on how you want to work with the units. But the way I would connect the Roland TR-8, Roland TB-3 and potentially the Behringer TD-3 is into a USB hub and then that USB hub is connected to the computer.
      This configuration will present all the audio channels that are produced by the modules to you computer which you can assign to whatever software that you are running. It also ensures that each unit presents its full 16 channels of MIDI which can be assigned. And any other commands required by the module are correctly passed and not filtered out by any instrument in the USB daisy chain.
      The problem with daisy chaining USB through another unit is that the the transit unit is acting as a MIDI hub and you are relying on the firmware in that transit instrument performing correctly. Plugging the units directly into the computer assures this.
      It also helps when trying to trouble shoot connection issues. As the issue in not in the chain it is directly between the instrument and the computer.
      Hope this helps with your setup. Jon

    I'm a newbie to this... I understand the midi daisy chain. How about the audio hook up? Thanks!

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @merleshultz1357
      It all depends on how you want to run Audio?
      Each unit has a Left and Right, with the left doubling as the Mono line.
      So you can either take each left and right off to your mixer as a stereo feed (six feeds). Or you can take the feed from the left port of each unit to the mixer (three feeds.)
      Then you have the hybrid. You take a mono lead from the Roland TB-3 to the left input on the Roland TR-8. The mono feed from the Roland System-1 to the right input on the Roland TR-8. And then the left and right from the Roland TR-8 to the mixer (two feeds.). Jon

    Hi, great videos, learned more from you than the manuals ahah. I recently purchased some second hand equipment (Roland System 1 & Roland TR-8) and I am trying to connect them to come out of 1 “phones” out port thru the system 1. I linked the TR8 MIDI out to the System 1 MIDI in and when I press play on the TR8, the TR8 only plays synth sounds instead of drum beats. Both devices are set to MIDI channel 1 and I played with the configurations of the systems “thru” settings and still no results. The only results I got is when I connected the L/R mono out of the system 1 to the external in of the TR8 and use the “phones” out port of the TR8, and it worked fine that way. I was wondering if you happened to know what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks!

      Hi @Ryan Ortiz
      I have had to read this questions a few times to ensure that I was reading this correctly.
      If I understand what you are asking correctly: You want to route the audio from the TR-8 through the System-1. Bottom line is that the System-1 does not have this function.
      You can take the left and right audio outputs on the System-1 and route these into the two input channels on the TR-8 and the sounds will be generated by the System-1 will be combined to the TR-8 outputs.
      Reading the question again it appears that you are trying to route AUDIO over the MIDI. MIDI was never designed for audio transmission and this could be where you confusion is coming from.
      You are correct to take the MIDI out from the TR-8 and run this into the MIDI on the System-1. This means that the System-1 will use the TR-8’s clock and the Start / STOP on the TR-8 will start the arpeggiator / sequencer on the System-1. But to combine the audio, the System-1 needs to be routed to the TR-8/
      Hopefully I have explained that in a way that makes sense. Jon

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  4 года назад +2

      Have you subscribed? ;-)
      In short the answer is yes. You cannot use the USB between these two instruments. You must use MIDI. You need a take a MIDI cable out of the TR-8 and in to the SYSTEM1. You need to ensure that clock on the TR-8 is set to internal and on the SYSTEM-1 as external. The clock should be transmitted from the TR-8 to the SYSTEM-1 irrespective of the MIDI channels. But you might need to set the receive channel on the SYSTEM-1 to the send channel on the TR-8. Which in default configuration should be channel 10. Jon

    That riff on the system-1 wasn't such a good idea to use for an example. It just made.everything sound so loose and messy.Also, it isn't a matter of simply connecting the leads from device to device. You also have to consider which midi "channel" each device sends and receives on.For instance, I use tb-3 out into the system-1m modular version of system-1 which doesn't have the keyboard) and when I first tired, nothing came out of the 1m.I asked on a few forums before someone advised me on how to set things up as the default midi channel was, for example, 1 on the 1m, and need to be changed to 2, and it then worked instantly.however, you then have the controls to consider.door example, when running the 1m from the tb-3 midi out, with the midi of course going in to the 1m, by default on my setup, any time I twiddled a cut-off or resonance knob on the tb-3, it would have a sometimes extreme effect on whatever sound was coming out from the 1m. So you must tell the 1m, or whatever device is being the midi "slave" to only accept NOTE commands, and not CONTROL commands. Sometimes it'll suit me to keep the control signals on, as that spontaneousness and uncertainty can produce great unexpected coincidences, but oftentimes, it is better to keep the control commands off.there are times when using midi completely.gets in the way of certain aspects of making music, depending on your prefered techniques of achieving the effect.For instance, I prefer running my drum machines and my tb-3 really fast, and usually, for dance floor stuff, at 300bpm.However, that doesn't mean my stuff sounds so fast as I have the bass sounds and accents emphasising 75 or 150bpm. So what I am doing is giving myself a much higher resolution of places to place notes to get more detailing into what I am doing, and an extra weight to the sound.however, apart from the fact the 1m, for example, crashes too often when run at nearing 300bpm (which is pretty poor for such an expensive piece that's meant to be pro) l, for me, it needn't always run so fast anyhow as I'm generally just using it door atmosphere and effect, so I'll have it slaved to a virtual rack on my PC via midi at 150bpm.or sometimes in need the tb-3 to run at 300, but the tr-8 at 150, and 1m at 75bpm (all Half of each other so they'll all fit.), and just won't connect them at all, as that would ruin what I am doing.so I have to match the grooves from them by earphone, manually, much like what Plastikman/Ritchie Hawtin had to do back in the 90s. And the main thing to do in this case is to remember so long as they go at the correct seed, or fractions of speeds, and are in key (that can be relative) then do what you want.so we need to know the rules of how things are done, but once we know that, don't let that get in the way of what you need to do to create what you feel. Midi? Yes! Not midi? Sometimes, yes.yeh, getting back to my point. It isn't always a matter of simply plugging in mid connectors, but of also setting the devices to certain midi channels, as the default settings might not work for you .

      How do I set the midi channels in the system 1? As at the moment the tr-8 is controlling the system 1 like you mentioned in your post. I've set my kit as in the video, the tr and tb work fine together,but the system 1 changes as I bring different fader channels in from the TR. All I would like is for the system 1 to use the tempo of the TR/TB.
      I am also very new to this , so I do get that I may not be saying things correctly. If you guys could assist me in this/point me in the right direction I would appreciate it so much thanks

      Hi @chris wilson
      I will put it this way, Roland didn’t think this one through, but it is relatively easy.
      1. Turn the unit off and then turn it back on holding down the System-1 button. If you have ender the MIDI mode the Arpeggio button should be flashing.
      2. By turning the scatter knob you are able to specify the channel that the System-1 will receive on. The channel is indicated by the number of scatter lights illuminated.
      1. If no lights are on then the unit is not listening on any channel
      2. Lights 1 to 10 then it is listening on channels 1 to 10
      3. Lights 10 plus lights 1 to 6 indicates channels 11 to 16
      4. All lights on indicates it is listening on all channels (Omni mode)
      3. Once you have set the channel using the Arpeggio button to save and return to normal operating mode.
      Not the most user friendly interface for this stuff! Jon

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  3 года назад +2

      @Frederico Krumenauer. Personally if you have the space on your mixer I would take the left and right out of each instrument and take them to a stereo channel if you have them or 2 channels set to left and right (6 channels in total)
      If you are restricted for channel, take the mono feeds for each instrument to the mixer and set the mix to the centre. That reduces the channels required from 6 to 3.
      If you only have 2 channels available or one stereo channel then you could use the method outlined in this video.
      Hope that helps. Jon

    My 3 devices are synced up with midi (tr-8 out to tb-3 in, tb-3 out to system-1 in), and then appear to be synced when I press play on the rhythm performer, but I can only get sound out of the tr-8.....the tb-3 and system 1 are on but aren't making any sound. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  7 лет назад +1

      Joshua
      Sorry for the delay in replying.
      So from the MIDI perspective I am assuming that each of these ARIA elements is set to MIDI through so that the clock on the TR-8 is transmitted all the way through to the System-1. The physical cabling you described sounds correct.
      What you haven't said in your question is how have you set up the audio side of the implementation? All three devices will need an audio feed to your mixer/amplifier. The audio is not carried via the MIDI cables. I have put a video together show a potential audio configuration that goes through the TR-8 that may be of help to you.
      Hope that this helps.

    Hi @TheMusicTechGuyUK, I've just found your video! I found it very helpful syncing up my Aira MIDI clock.
    My question is similar to Roldan242's, except I have the System-1 too. I have the same setup as yourself - TR-8, TB-3 and System 1.
    My audio interface is the AKAI EIE Pro and has only 4 inputs. It has 4 audio inserts in the back of the unit and also has a MIDI in and out socket.
    I am wondering how to connect the Aira gear to my DAW via the interface, using either jack cables, MIDI, or both!
    I would like to both record and playback the TR-8, TB-3 and System 1 all together synced using you MIDI daisy chain method in the video, and also play and record each unit seperately.
    I really hope you see this comment and can help me out, I'm looking online and your video is the only help I can find linking them all up together!

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK

      I am assuming by now that you have solved your problem. I am sorry for the late response. So I am responding for anyone else who has the same question.
      The key is that the daisy chain for MIDI needs to start with the computer using the out on the Audio Interface. Then MIDI in and out through the devices. This will ensure all use the same clock.
      If you want to use the start / stop button on the TR-8 then this will need to be the second unit in the chain. This will mean that the TB-3 and any arpeggiation on the System-1 will start and stop with the press of the button.

If I use midi out, I can control the tb3, but clock does not transmit, if I use through, clock transmits, but I my m3 keyboard doesn't play my tb3.
    What do I do? Do I need a midi hub?

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  7 лет назад +1

      You need to be careful not to create a Midi loop. Try this. Ensure the Midi Thru is disabled on the TR-8. (In another video I show you how to do this.) Take a Midi cable from the TR-8 to the Midi In on the M3. This will allow the TR-8's clock to be master. Now I am not sure whether the M3 will re-transmit the TR-8's clock on the Midi Out. If this is the case then take a feed from the M3 to the in of the TB-3 and then from the TB-3 to the TR-8. The TB-3 should have thru mode enabled. If the M3 does not transmit the clock then you will need to Merge the Midi Out and Thru from the M3 to the Midi In on the TB-3 and also a separate Midi Out from the M3 to the TR-8.
      When I read this back it look horrid. I use an old Roland A-880 which does all this for me. I swear by this unit.

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  7 лет назад +1

      If I am reading the question correctly, Midi does not transmit the System-1 or TB3 sound to the TR8 so the answer is no. All units transmit sound over the USB connection, but you would need a computer and audio interface or MX-1 to use this feature.
      Other than that the only other way is to connect the mono outs on the TB3 and System-1 to the left and right external in's on the TR8

      Your need to balance the sound from the TB-3 using its volume pot.

      I am assuming that you want to use the TR-8 as the master clock? If this is the case yes a Midi cable from the OUT on the TR-8 to the IN on the TB-3 is required. Also ensure that the listening midi channel on the TB-3 is different from the transmitting midi channel TR-8 otherwise the TB-3 will play a bass note each time the TR-8 triggers.

    I notice too from the comments below, that the above video is LACKING in full details of how to make this work.perhaps, it might be true that this will work out of the box for SOME folk maybe. But for MOST of us the above WILL NOT WORK.EH? Because the default midi channels will be different for each device.that's is why everyone below here are not getting any sound out of the tb-3 and system-1 or system-1m.if I remember correctly (as I only had to do it once, and it was a while back now) as I generally hook the tb-3 up to the 1m, I had to go "under-the-hood" on the 1m, by holding a particular button as I switched the power on, look at what midi channel it was st to, and either had to reset it to channel 1 or 2. Then it worked straight away!if you don't tell people this then they will have some pretty negative experiences.incidentally, midi is very useful for much, BUT can be just as much of a hindrance. I often just beat match manually, and have nothing connected via midi, and use the "select" button on the mx-1 to make sure things are good before I send it through the master.so never worry too much about only going down a certain route.but always try to know about the things you need to know about.right.... The above video does not take into account that out-of-the-box many devices will be set to different default midi channels!learn how to set them all correctly before doing what the guy in the above video is doing or you will get no audio from the "slaved" devices.ok?

    • @TheMusicTechGuyUK
      @TheMusicTechGuyUK  4 года назад +1

      The comment about the riff really confused me. And then I realised that you meant the arpeggiator. I think all I was trying to demonstrate at the time was that increasing and decreasing the clock on the TR-8 (the clock source) was having an effect on the other two units connected.
      Now the MIDI channel comment is really interesting. The video does assume a level of knowledge over the units. But there are a number of things to check.
      - By default the out of the box (factory) configuration is that the clock will transmit from the TR-8 irrespective of the channel the receiving instrument is listening on. The TR-8 being a drum machine will default to listening for MIDI on channel 10. It will also send on channel 10.
      - The port out/thru MIDI port on the sending device needs to be set to OUT and not thru. In the thru setting it will just re-transmit what is received on the IN port. As the clock is being generated on the TR-8 this will not get transmitted.
      - On the devices that you are daisy chaining in the AIRA and Boutique range the out/thru ports need to be set to THRU to allow the clock to be onward transmitted. (THRU should be the default setting). But for the equipment I own there should be a video with info on how to check this.
      Now admittedly if you have bought your equipment second had, then you have no idea what settings were changed by the previous owner. My personal rule of thumb is to do a factory reset as soon as you buy something second hand. It will save you a lot of time trying to diagnose issues in the future.
      The second point I will make is that some equipment does not receive the clock from an external source in OMNI mode. What I mean by this is that specific MIDI commands can be transmitted on any channel and the target instrument will understand the command irrespective of the listening channel will execute it. This is how the AIRA equipment is suppose to work with regards to the clock. But for those instruments that do not observe this then they will need to be set to have the MIDI receive channel set to the send channel of the source instrument that generates the clock. Of course there is a down side to this in that MIDI signals (note data, Control Change (CC) messages sent from the source will be received by the target and potentially do some weird things!
      In this situation you may be able to switch off note data and/or CC. This will depend on your instrument. The TR-8 will allow this.
      In terms of AIRA you need to ensure that each instrument, apart from the clock source, has the clock source set to external.
      Now I agree I didn’t go into this detail on the video and maybe I should have. But really the video was about which socket should you plug which cable into.
      MIDI was developed in the 1980’s and was really simple for the machines of the time. However, over the years we are making it do more and more. Which is the reason why MIDI 2.0 has been released to allow modern machines to take advantage of different controls and implementation patterns. But the reality is that MIDI is a headache for many. I had re-wired the MIDI structure of my studio 3 times in the past 6 years because I had acquired a new piece of equipment that didn’t fit the wiring at that point.
      Well that addresses the technical aspects of this comment. The setup you choose depends on your equipment and what music you are generating. Hope this helps. Jon
