    Hey man, thanks for the video, I found this very insightful and helpfull. My only annoyance is the whole green thing with Aira, I know its petty but Im not mad on it. Is there a way of changing the the lights where the faders are to green etc I know you can manually change the led's by replacing them to the chosen colour o your choice but it seems you cannot change them for the faders (+others) because they are inbedded in the actual board. Are you able to change the colours ? Regards

      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      19karl16 I don't know.... there is no hidden function for this as far as I know and I don't know anything about replacing the LEDs. This green colour is a bit special I guess but that doesn't really bother me. Thanks for the comment! Take care! :)

      Hi! The accent steps always influence all the instruments in a pattern. I wish there was a way to deactivate accents for single tracks but so far this is not possible.

    Awesome video! One question - any idea what the mysterious 7th function is? It might have something to do with the 7x7 upgrade this TR-8 came with. Thanks!

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад +2

      Karwood Bear Hi! The latest update is a timing feature. It lets you select TR timing with the slightly unstable sequencer timing of the analog originals (default) or rock solid timing like a daw.

    Thank you for the video! I bought a used TR-8 and the external in has never worked. It doesn't seem to pick up any signal from anything I plug in whether mono or stereo. Is my unit just broken or is there some hidden function where the previous owner deactivated the ext in for some reason?

  • @romankov3069

    Excellent video, I accidentally launched Boot mode and didn't know how to turn off the ghost note function. I feel like it takes away from the intuitive nature of the TR8 when you can optionally select ghost notes by holding the individual instruments button and select the step whenever you need to.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      I found out it doesn't really matter which mode you're in, you can always program negative accents. The only difference is that in 909 mode you don't have to hold the instrument key down, you just press the step key twice for ghost notes. All in all I like the 808 mode a little better though because there you get this additional high hat sound when you put closed and open on the same step. Negative accents are a bit confusing but you'll get used to the workflow really fast.

    nice video man!
    i routed the bassrum to main out cause of volume control. toms on a and rest on output b.
    everything works fine!
    but the effects (reverb delay) only have an effect to main out. is that right or am i wrong?
    is there a way to have the effects on out a and b too?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  10 лет назад

      The effects only work on the main outs, that's just the way the signal is routed inside the TR 8 and there is no way to have them affect the individual outs. I was also a bit disappointed when I found out about this BUT now with the update (1.10) it doesn't really matter to me anymore because now you can set individual levels for the boost mode for each of the eleven parts. If you have already upgraded, this can be done by selecting "kit" in the drum select section and then keeping an instrument key pressed while turning the tempo knob. This way you can dial in volume levels from 0 to 200 if boost is activated (third key illuminated in boot mode as explained in this video). 100 is neutral. When I used the individual outs I wanted to make the cowbell a little louder or give the toms a little extra boost, so for levelling basically. I'm now sending all the sounds through the main outs, assigning individual levels. I keep the kick and snare on a neutral level of 100 or even slightly below because these two parts also use compression and can produce a very hot signal even without the boost. Then I adjust all the other levels to my liking as explained. Great new addition in the 1.10 version, please just contact me if you have any more questions.

    Hi I recently purchased a TR8 and loved the video you did on it. I've been having some problems with it, when I put my closed hat on the same grid as the open hat or close it doesn't play the open hats. I've seen videos where people play both and it works, I was wondering if I did something wrong with it?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  4 года назад

      Filipe Brandao Hi there! The closed hihat overriding the open one is perfectly normal. There is a difference for 808 hihats though in which closed and open placed on the same step produces a different sound. This is the same as in the original TR-808. It kind of gives you a mixture of both, it's a short sound with a little more body to it, almost "half closed" and very useful for placing "accents" without using the accent function. I use it all the time.

    Excellent video sir! I just picked mine up two weeks ago and it really has me inspired finally getting away from my DAW/ staring at a computer screen. On that note though I was wondering something and seeing if you might have some insight on this. Since the TR-8 can act as a controller with all knobs and buttons sending midi data, does it still transmit the midi output for all of the CC notes while in "normal" mode. Ideally I would really dig being able to have it connected to a daw and have the daw record/ capture the midi performance. I might email Roland about it but I though I would ask. Again, great video!

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      Hi! Thanks for the nice comment! Yes, the TR8 transmits and receives notes and CCs. There are a few limitations though, for example the scatter section doesn't send out MIDI. It receives controller changes #68 (type), #69(depth) and #70(on, off) though, so scatter can be automated using an external controller. It sends and receives all the knob movements but mutes are still missing in the MIDI implementation as well as effect instrument settings. The perfect solution would be some kind of MIDI snapshot transmit and receive function to make sure a host sequencer captures all these settings just the way they are when recording MIDI and putting the TR 8 back in that exact same state for playback. That would be truly awesome. Let's see what the future brings... :)

    • @michaelsolano8733
      @michaelsolano8733 9 лет назад

      +LousyFacelift - Exactly! I would love to see a plugin that you could open on a track that would record the entire performance for editing and recall. Roland Is it too much to ask!? Haha

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      +Michael Solano No! No plug in please... hahaha! Just a software update for the TR 8 that enables it to send all MIDI settings to an external sequencer in one snapshot with a simple button combination. That would be a lot better for all users, those who use computers and those who use hardware sequencers. ;) Cheers!

    Thank you very much for sharing this information. I really appreciate it. Would be nice if Roland had a piece of software available for download that would put everything on a monitor via USB connect. Other companies do that. Download the program install plug USB to PC and work of a GUI instead of blind buttons. Thanks again.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  10 лет назад

      Yes, I've already upgraded. :) One thing that's a bit confusing when doing this: The icon for the TR-8 will not show up on your computer screen before you've installed the right driver for your system and have the device switched on in "USB mode" BEFORE connecting it. Only installing the driver and then connecting it doesn't get you very far.
      The individual settings for boost mode are a great addition and I'm really really glad they added all the important MIDI features for the effects and scatter (yes!). The only thing that's still missing in the MIDI document are mute settings I think. I could be wrong on this though, haven't tried yet.
      Errr... and what about more sounds... Like... 505.....? 606.... ? 707....? I mean SEVEN OH SEVEN....? ROLAND.... ? ....PLEASE ?!... It is still the "TR-809" in a way... we want the TR-8... the TR-forever!!! ;)

    Hey, do you know if there is a way of sending midi only from one channel, instead of all, to use one instrument to trigger other machine?? Thanks in advance!!

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      +Joao Pereira Hi, the TR 8 never sends on multiple MIDI channels, it sends out a different note value for each instrument all on the same MIDI channel. That means that a single instrument of the TR 8 can never send out different note values to another MIDI device. There is no way to only send one specific note on that MIDI channel without also sending the other notes that are assigned to the other instruments.

      Not yet, but there is a chance the sounds of the CR-78 will be included in the next upgrade of the TR 8. Some guys at Roland were also talking about the sounds of the TR-505, 606, 707 and 727 in the next upgrade, which would be quite fantastic! Thanks for the nice comment!

    • @LousyFacelift

      Mr. E Yes, the instruments have to be assigned to the effects (I made a video on how to do that), then you can trigger the effects by placing steps, just like triggering the sounds.

    Thanks for your reply! Another thing I came across is that the HC is activated when I play the CH, like they are on the same channel. Any idea?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  8 лет назад

      +ilmar2350 ...What?! That's weird man! All I can say is that all the instruments of the TR 8 run on the same MIDI channel, they are only set to different note values, so if you hook up a MIDI keyboard that's set to the same channel you can find the right key for each sound. If for some reason one key triggers two different sounds something must have messed up the note settings in the TR 8 but I have no idea what that could be. Firmware reset?

    Hi First of all thanks for a great video really useful . Just wondering if you could help with this problem i have? I have several midi devices linked together all with their own channels and connected to Ableton. The TR-8 seems to be sending the drum pattern midi info to my Korg Vocla Bass ... so im getting the pattern I'M sending to the Korg PLUS the drum pattern from the TR-8. I thought that was the purpose for the 16 midi channels so you can put an instrument or device on each one. Am I missing something here? I've even just put the two together with nothing else connected and it still does it. When I have multiple devices chained it happens if i turn off the TR-8 it stops..... any ideas?? I just updated the system to 1.12 now but this was happening before I updated.. Cheers :)

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      Mr Feenix Hmm... I don't really know the Volca Bass but if it's receiving MIDI note messages from the TR 8 they must be on the same channel somehow. What channel numbers are you using on the Volca and on the TR 8? Make sure they' re not the same.

    • @mrfeenix1
      @mrfeenix1 9 лет назад

      It is strange TR8 is default Ch10 and the Volca Ch01 ...

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      Mr Feenix Any other MIDI settings in the Volca set to "omni" or something like that? When you connected just the TR 8 to the Volca you went MIDI out of the TR to the MIDI in of the Volca, right? I think it must be a MIDI input setting in the Volca, like a keyboard mode that tells it to always react to MIDI input signals, no matter what channel they're on.

    Hi LF how do I turn the random pattern thing off? I turned it on by pressing PTN select + scatter on (TR8) but now it's on every patch and I don't know how to disable it, turning the machine of and on does not do it....

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  5 лет назад

      By default the TR 8 memorizes all the chamges you make to patterns and keeps them in their current state, also the changes generated by the random function. If you wish to store patterns permanently and recall them after making changes or creating completely new ones with the random function you need to have the pattern lock function activated. This is done by holding down PTN SELECT and turning the tempo knob until you see "lock" in the display. This means that all the patterns will be kept the way they are at that point and can be recalled. If you then wish to make changes to patterns you wish to keep you need to unlock them first - same procedure but make sure the display reads "off".

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  10 лет назад +1

      Yes, two more functions on step buttons 5 and 6 in the boot mode of version 1.10. When 5 is lit before switching to normal mode this means that the scatter on button will only play the effect for as long as you keep the button pressed. Step 6 lit means that the TR 8 will only receive MIDI clock, no start and stop messages from an external device.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад +1

      lIGGY WIGGI Yes, when 5 is lit before switching to normal mode this means that the scatter on button will only play the effect for as long as you keep the button pressed. Step 6 lit means that the TR 8 will only receive MIDI clock, no start and stop messages from an external device. Step 7 lit is for TR- timing, slightly unstable like the originals, unlit means you've got rock solid timing like a daw.

    • @LIGGYMUSIC
      @LIGGYMUSIC 9 лет назад

      +LousyFacelift Can you explain the seveth mode little more detailed ? I understood that internal sequencing is not perfecr, or the other case is that i can play some notes that are not perfect on grid (via using daw to send midi notes) . Like playing snare little bit out of time by moving note few miliseconds from the grid.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад +2

      +Muff Wiggler Both settings of step key #7 only affect the timing of its internal sequencer. When you're triggering externally I don't think it matters but in this case I would go for the unlit setting just to make sure the sounds are played back immediately when they're triggered. Roland used ACB technology to not only emulate the sound of the originals but also the slightly unstable timing of the TR-808. Old analog gear sounds a bit less precise and accurate due to tolerance values of certain parts like transistors and such. Sometimes that's good for character but sometimes that's bad when you want precision, for example when the sequencer of the TR 8 runs at a fast tempo along with other instruments. When you're using the TR 8 with step key 7 lit in boot mode at around 180 bpm together with another sequencer you can hear it drifting off quite a bit, even when it's MIDI synched to the other machine. It will come back to the right speed but it won't stay stable and in some cases that really doesn't sound good. I'm glad they added this feature so you can make it fit your arrangement, no matter what kind of music you make with it.

    Awesome video lousyFaceLift! I actually have two mono synths, but I didn't know that I could connect both synths into the TR8 at one time. I can record all of my drums sounds and everything dry, but I'd really like to use the effects on the TR8 instead because they sound really nice. If someone could help me solve this problem, I would really appreciate it.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  7 лет назад

      I have no experience with FL but I assume the effects are only running over the main audio outputs and cannot be applied to an incoming signal in the TR 8 unlike the scatter which affects all signals except for those using the individual outs.

    • @FunWithAaron
      @FunWithAaron 7 лет назад

      So basically the only way to record the Reverb from the TR8 is to plug the TR8 into an Audio Interface?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  7 лет назад

      Aaron Jacobs I think so, yes. I think they're hardwired to the main outs, the assignables are dry.

    There is a possibility to program and save different 16 step sequence and recall them? Like button 1( 16 step sequence) button 2 ( other sequence) button 3.....

      Can i save individual pattern sequence.. And recall it in live performance?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  9 лет назад

      +GoodModeOn You can switch between patterns in pattern mode while the sequencer is running. You have (only) sixteen patterns altogether. The patterns are always saved in their slots how you last left them but you can also lock patterns, so that the sequencer settings are stored and all further changes will be lost when you select another pattern or switch power off. It's not possible to lock the tempo, which I think is a bit of a shame.

      +GoodModeOn unfortunately you have to stop playback to copy the pattern to the next available pattern say copy from 1 to 2.

    hello . do you know how to select for me main output -10 or +4 db ?

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  7 лет назад

      Innatural Records As far as I know there is no dedicated -10 or +4 dB setting for the outputs on the TR 8, so I guess you're referring to the boost mode settings. I think it all depends on the mixer or recording system you're using. When I was using a digital workstation (Yamaha AW-4416) with line input expansion cards as my main mixer, I had to chose between these settings (-10 or +4 dB) for its inputs and I always kept it at -10. Just make sure you can make all incoming signals hot enough to get a nice wide range of dynamics with enough headroom to go even louder than actually needed, especially when you've already dialed in some individual boost mode settings over 100 for the instruments on the TR 8. You don't want to keep all the sounds of the TR 8 on an internal level around 200 just to get a hot enough signal to your mixer. If you need to turn the level of the TR 8 (and your other gear) very high up and constantly keep it there to make the signal hot enough, just switch over to the -10 dB setting on your input device instead. You want the faders or potis of your mixer to have a strong impact on the levels throughout their whole range from low to high, not only for the upper quarter with anything below becoming almost inaudible.

      +Bastiaan van de Werk
      Hi there! When 5 is lit before switching to normal mode this means that the scatter on button will only play the effect for as long as you keep the button pressed. Step 6 lit means that the TR 8 will only receive MIDI clock, no start and stop messages from an external device. Step 7 lit is for TR- timing, slightly unstable like the original 808, unlit means you' ve got rock solid timing like a daw. The KIT button lit in boot mode enables you to save the selected effect types that you can switch in instrument mode as a part of your kit. The SCALE button lit in boot mode doesn' t seem to change much in play mode except for showing the selected scale in the display when you hold the scale button down. While holding the button you can use the tempo dial to change scales.

    is it possible to get the open and closed hi-hats to play together without one canceling the other out? for instance, If I wanted a typical 16th note closed hi-hat with quarter note open hi-hats on the up beat, the open hi-hats cancel.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  7 лет назад

      Blake Foster There are two different settings in boot mode: TR Rec unlit - 808 mode, lit - 909 mode. In 808 mode the open and closed hat on the same step will produce a different sound. Still kind of short but not the same as closed hi hat alone. You might still want to use the open hi hat sound alone for what you want to do.

    I found that the manual for the Roland JD-XA was really bad... only 12 pages. Emailed them, and it turns out they had a 74 page manual - they sent me the PDF and it shows everything for it in detail. I guess the same is probably true for this as well - try emailing tech support and asking for the full manual.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  8 лет назад +1

      As strange as it seems but at least with the TR8 Roland did this intentionally. It's a marketing strategy that helps getting the product promoted by it's users when talking about additional functions that aren't described in the manual. I know this from the guy in the music store where I bought it. But hey, that's typically Roland, too. I think in the 90s they even wrote a program for the JD-990 that let's you access a ping pong game. It shows up in the display when you press a certain combination of buttons. :)

      +Adam Robertshaw could u please share with us the manual ?

    • @AdamRobertshaw
      @AdamRobertshaw 8 лет назад

      +Jo Hn Most of the features are explained in the manual to be honest. Shortcuts etc are probably described in full on the TR-8/Aira website or a video manual (they have been doing these for a few devices now). The only other thing you will want is the midi implementation manual which will tell you all the notes and midi charting.
      roland.com/support/article/res/faq/63081213/TR-8_MIDIImpleChart_e01.pdf
      As for purposeful marketing by not giving a manual - doubt it, and the guy in the store has as much knowledge as you or me on these factors - they don't get told additional marketing info or anything, so it will be purely his speculation. More than likely they assumed the device is ultra simple so doesn't need to hold everyones hand through every step. I mean really, if you think this device is complex or deep then try a full blown Synth like the JD-XA or the new Jupiter renditions and you will laugh how basic the TR-8 is! For shortcuts for TR-8 they are all in the manual, but if you didn't read it properly then search youtube for TR-8 shortcuts or something and theres loads of videos going over all the minor features (including ghost noting which a lot of people don't notice is on the module, and the fact that a ghost note on a clave 808 is actually a different sound to the standard, etc).
      If you still want more info try this guide by Roland: www.rolandcorp.com.au/blog/ultimate-guide-aira-tr-8/

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  8 лет назад

      Adam Robertshaw
      I don't think the guy in the store has a reason to lie to me and I was only repeating what he told me. You don't know him or who he was talking to, so it is purely your speculation that what he said isn't true. Who are you trying to impress here, smartie?

    • @AdamRobertshaw
      @AdamRobertshaw 8 лет назад

      +LousyFacelift I just gave you the manuals you said didn't exist dude... you're welcome! lol
      Instead of telling people the salesman lie the in store clerk (who, yes an assumption, doesn't work for Roland) told you it's better to check with Roland first to see - they do have the info, and they do release videos on shortcuts and Aira guides. I'm not trying to be a "smartass", I'm telling people what the reality is - I see no reason for being offended by me saying the in-store clerk was talking crap, unless you are that in-store guy? :P
      I saw similar complaints about the Roland Boutique synth modules, but that manual is only 4 damn pages long and explains everything!

    Good tutorial but for God’s sake why do all these people wave their arms about so much? It is distracting.

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  6 лет назад

      Fallic Alec It's not just waving arms around, it's pointing different things out on the machine while talking about them and it's natural talking gesture like anyone would use when talking in public to a group of people. It helps to underline certain things that are being said and try to keep up the attention of the listener. If you feel distracted by this you must feel distracted by quite many other things, too and I'm sorry but I cannot help you with that.

    • @88SPIKE
      @88SPIKE 6 лет назад

      It would help if the movement of the hands were restricted to the pointing of the various operations - it is the non-essential movement which the eye still follows that I find distracting. I'm just trying to help you make your videos even better. If you were demonstrating this on a blackboard and using a long pointer you can maybe understand what I'm trying to say - you wouldn't wave the pointer around!

    • @LousyFacelift
      @LousyFacelift  6 лет назад +1

      OmG... Are we really still talking about this? :D Hahaha... Well, to be fair, I appreciate that you wrote this comment in a much more respectful way, this time not sounding as if your opinion was the undeniable truth for each and everyone, so thanks for that! I still disagree though because I don't see the problem, maybe I did use hand gestures a bit extensively because they are the only part of me that's shown in the picture and I'm trying to explain things and express myself but like I said - if you tried a bit more to keep your focus on what's actually being said instead of looking for "mistakes" or being overly sensitive in your perception you wouldn't feel distracted. At least not so much that you'd feel the need to sit down and write a comment about it. And about the other example - no, you wouldn't wave the pointer around but maybe you would hold it still and at the same time make gestures with your other hand as a means of expression, people do these things, you know, some a bit more and some a bit less... Have you ever been to Italy? I know it's a bit of a stupid cliché but still - do yourself a favor and never go there...

    Warum machst Du das Video in holpriger englische Sprache? Ich bin immer wieder entsetzt, wie bereitwillig Menschen Ihre Muttersprache Deutsch aufgeben für angeblich mehr Besucher. Eigentlich ganz schön erbärmlich! Besonders wenn ich sehe wie wenige Aufrufe und "Likes" Du dafür bekommen hast. Wenn man nun bedenkt dass es zum TR8 kaum deutschsprachige, aber dafür massenhaft englische Videos gibt, dann verwundert es umso mehr, warum Du diese offensichtliche Lücke nicht nutzt um mehr Umsatz zu generieren und mehr Interessenten anzulocken.

      EliteZockerWorld Was ich immer wieder erschreckend finde ist, mit welcher Selbstverständlichkeit, wie arrogant und abwertend Leute wie du über die Videos anderer urteilen und versuchen, in deren Angelegenheiten reinzuquatschen. Wenn dir diese Inhalte auf Deutsch so wichtig sind, dann mach doch selber welche. Die Behauptung, das Video hätte auf Deutsch mehr Zuschauer erreicht ist komplett aus der Luft gegriffen, ich behaupte das Gegenteil. Und selbst wenn - ich möchte nun mal nicht nur von Deutschen verstanden werden, sondern global und das schließt Deutsche nicht aus. Oh ja, wahnsinnig holperig mein Englisch, war bestimmt unglaublich schlimm für dich, das erdulden zu müssen. Hier ist nur eines erbärmlich und das ist deine Klugscheißerei.
