HAHA! So great!

Unofficial motto of the British and US governments. Hell, in America, two acronyms can me two different things.
For instance, the NRA (National Rifle Association and National Recovery Administration).
And the US government.

...this is enough to give any self-respecting software engineer a heart attack.
You know it's bad when any self-respecting software engineer says "That data needs to be in a database, not a spreadsheet."
My last company I worked for, the accounting department had a spreadsheet that looked like it may have had over 500,000 cells in it. I do know we had to remove their 32-bit version of Excel and install a 64-bit version as the 32-bit version didn't have enough memory to handle the spreadsheet.
@@ki5aok That's a crime against humanity, right there.
@@ki5aok If it's stupid, but it works, then it's maybe still stupid afterall.
@@ki5aok same! My last job didn't have a database of employees, they had a fucking spreadsheet. A multi billion dollar finance company... Every time an employee was hired, they got added to the spreadsheet. When they quit, we'd just highlight their name in the spreadsheet. Every time we had to make anyone an account for anything, they get a new line on a new page of the spreadsheet. My department *begged* to let us convert it into a database, but the CTO was a dude who barely knew how to turn on a computer and was always like "lul no"
@@ki5aok
I ones did a working experience at copnay and worked in the Complaint Management team. The Teamlead wanted me to overhaul an Excel-file where we could record all complaints, nature of complaints/fault, product, origin of fault, associated cost and more, and than use Excel filters and other functions to show for example, how much did this teams fuckups cost us this month? Or that persons? Are there any products that come up suspicisously often/cost alot? And then tie that all in with diagramms and pie-charts.
At the end i was the only one that understood that spreadsheer (through it wasnt actually THAT complicated)

Is it weird that international bureaucracy like this is part of what gives me hope for humanity?
It shows our ability to cooperate. To create powerful systems that benefit everyone. That international relations are often not zero sum.
On the flip side, if a country refused to get on board, they would have no international mail to or from that nation. This would annihilate the national economy. So in reality, just like everything else, the penalty for not standardizing is exponentially greater than any potential gains from holding out for a greater share (such as the American lunacy behind refusing to adopt the metric system). So it's less about cooperation than securing ones own economic viability.

WTD Productions but now I want a helicopter.

It's amazing how many complex systems in the world that we think are highly sophisticated are actually managed using Excel spreadsheets.
More like SQL databases, excel is for people who analyze small datasets on the front-end.

I wonder now if there's a fan faction about those two...

That Apache helicopter bit was damn good.
Yep, thou I think a Bell 206L3 or a 407 would be a bit more practical since I fly both types. Besides, AH-64 Apache school is a good six months of cracking the books and with the Democrats having their panties in a wad about guns, a helicopter with the full boat of 30mm Cannons, machine guns, and TOW missiles would really send them over the edge Now kidding aside, it is very interesting to know how the postal system works, it's all about the free flow of goods and services.

I don't know anything about the czech postal service, but oh man was that a swift pun.
Here you have my like.

thanks a lot that really helped me I couldn't find it anywhere.
Thanks, was also looking for it
Thanks a lot! I was looking for it too.
Thanks, I was looking for that too.
I’ve actually always wondered about how this works! Last April, I was in the Maldives, specifically the Dhaalu Atoll, and I sent a postage letter to Charlotte, NC. I wondered how my purchase of a stamp in my very remote resort would pay for the travel all the way back to the US. It took three months to arrive btw! This was very interesting.
3 months sounds about the average time to locate the lesser used regions on that spreadsheet
The Australian postal service is a kangaroo
As an Australian, I can approve this.
It would be strange if it weren't...
they got pouches, don't they?
It's about as reliable ;)

If you truly loved acronyms then you would know that those aren't acronyms. Acronyms are pronounced like words (NASA). Those are initialism and you say the letters (CIA).
Your comment has actually made him do an errata!
I like AMOOFLs.
I pronounce CIA “see ya”
Ok smarty pants
Actually I will be the nauseating nerd and explain that Maltava is only partially correct. Acronyms by definition MUST spell actual words. NASA may be pronounced like a word but it was not in the dictionary until the Administration came into existence. COLA is a true acronym because cola, the drink, exists as a word independently from a Cost Of Living Adjustment(COLA). COLA may not be the best example but it is a proper acronym. I once had to explain to my friend that even her professor did not know the correct definition of “generic.” He meant general degree.

this video actually made me appreciate why mailing packages can sometimes be so expensive when u consider all the work that goes into getting ur package from one place to another amongst countless other packages
What about air mail? Airborne couriers? Air post? Plane delivery? Air mail by plane? Plane Plane Plane Plane Plane
Air mail is done by private companies - e.g. FedEx, UPS, DHL.
Wouldn't that just be a different route on the spreadsheet? The Poland Australia route specifies it's by sea.
Kenny K Does the spreadsheet not handle private companies? I don't think it's all governments.
There is something like this for aircargo aswell, but that one is not managed by the UPU, but instead by the IATA. Just search for TACT (The Air Cargo Tariff)
Nobody in replies got the plane joke .
I can't believe I'm watching this again 2 years later, and I just saw the Nepal detail at 0:53. This made the video for me!

This is honestly one of the best videos you've ever made! It's just full to the brim with personality.
I hope someone automated the making of that list and did not do it by hand
They probably had a massive team doing it as new people (boats, governments, shipping companies) sent in their information. But the real question is... how did they send in their information if they didn't have the document???? lol jk probably just stamped it to hell.
Hopefully it is all in a database, and the spreadsheet is an exported snapshot.
But they get paid, so...

Have you ever looked into routing protocols and how internet routing works? I think you'll enjoy it very much. Networking is a lot like transit, but even easier to understand because it's simpler!
I have always wondered how this was done and I find this very interesting! Once I even asked a woman at the post office how do they figure it all out and she didn't have an answer, and now I'm super tempted to go show her this video!

DFTBA? I thought this was run by Wendover not Foot of a Ferret
LARAUJO how is Hank Green a ferret?
DFTBA is a phrase popularised by the Vlog Brothers (Hank and John Green), they made DFTBA.com. If you hear almost any youtuber saying DFTBA they're usually referencing the vlog brothers (that includes foot of a ferret)
sirBrouwer who the eff is Hank?

No planes?
I could not love your work more; even the ads at the end are ... half as interesting (since you seem to mean, like Andrea said below, Twice as interesting!) Subscribed and shared ... woohoo!!
4:17 AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENAAAAAAA
cena means price in polish, captain price from call of duty translates to "kapitan cena" :D
*that meme is dead*
It is important to note as well that price can vary depending on how he dispatch is transited. If direct dispatch, you only pay the airline and the delivery postal administrator. If the country's mail is low volume, it may end up needing a transit postal administrator which has a different rate as well. It depends if it is closed or transit à découvert.
Tip: Your postal service does not support a certain country? If it is only a letter, just write which transit country you want your letter to pass (such as via Germany). Postal operators are required to forward these letters due to the UPU policy of "freedom of transit".

SDR is also used by airlines to calculate how much compensation they have to pay you for loss of luggage
2:15 ok, why is there a horse on the side of this building?
Wut
I didn't even notice 😂😂
I have absolutely no good explanation for this.
The God of Mail would be Hermes (Greek) or Mercury (Latin); however he has winged shoes, i don't know of him ever wielding a winged horse, because why would he, he's super fast and can fly around anywhere as he is. And oh BTW there's i think at least 4 named winged horses in Greek mythology, and dozens more across other cultures, so just because you see a winged horse, it doesn't necessarily have to be the Pegasus.
I have googled up things and have seen a Canadian stamp released in commemoration of Universal Postal Union; it had clearly Hermes on it, with his winged shoes, winged hat, winged staff, and not one but TWO winged horses behind him. They must have meant something by that, beats me what though. Them being two, obviously it makes at least one of them and potentially both obviously not Pegasus.
Maybe a winged horse was simply cheaper than Hermes to sculpt. After all, a slightly misshapen horse is still very much a horse, but a misshapen human is either very sad or very hilarious. And you know, the whole winged theme.
I actually went ahead and sent an inquiry to the Universal Postal Union about the winged horse on their wall. I'll let you know how it plays out.
Siana Gearz will be waiting
