"Cheater rig" for dirty river walleyes

- I'm usually an artifical-only enthusiast when it comes to catchin' walleyes...but sometimes you gotta bust out all the tricks when it comes to out-fishing your buddies 🤷♂️😂🧨.
This simple "cheater rig" straight-up catches 'em [!!!] when you're dealing with swift current and dirty water. We were fishing on the US side of the Rainy River near Baudette, MN. The spring walleye run there is no secret...but the fall run can be just as good-er 😏 thanks to massive schools of emerald shiners pushing upriver from the main lake...walleyes aren't far behind.

We call it a Carolina rig use it all spring in the maumee river for walleye run about 5 foot leaders
been watching all these walleye fishing videos got me hurting to go fishing but all the lakes are still frozen but also the ice is too soft to ice fish

For whatever reason dirty water river walleyes love eating bottom presentations. What us do for the fall greenback run on the red is a ½oz to ¾oz jig just barley twitching on bottom sometimes not moving at all and a drop shot hook about a foot up the line from the jig.
Try it out, works incredible.
what do you put on the drop shot hook??

Thx Kurt! That rig was definitely a day-saver. I have the medium-size Bubba. Absolutely love it for single-hook setups (pitching jigs, Lindy rigs, slip-bobbers, snap jigging, etc) but if you run a lot of crankbaits with bunches of trebles you might wanna go with a rubber net for less tangles.

Surprise! I've been doing that for years and all you really need is a crawler or two.
Do you recall what action and length fishing rod you were using in this video?
I believe it was a 7' Medium Fast. But it was pretty powerful rod, and almost felt like a medium heavy. Needed that extra "oomph" for pulling the fish into the current.
I pretty new to river fishing walleye. I am planning on fishing the Detroit River this spring. When you run this rig is the boat stationary or are you doing a controlled drift with the trolling motor similar to vertical jigging.
I like to do it stationary on high-percentage spots or places I've graphed fish. But you can absolutely do a controlled drift - would be killer through holes.
We use this same presentation on the Missouri river just upstream from lake Sakakawea and will second what “target walleye” stated. Find and eddy or a shoreline with some slack current are going to be great places to start mark some fish and anchor or spot lock your boat a lil upstream so the current will pull your lines right into where you marked those fish. If that doesnt work it def wont hurt to do a controlled drift downstream and then slowly pull your rigs back upstream to work over over a spot. Once i know where fish are hanging out at though my preferred method is def to just anchor or spot lock. Another thing is when it comes to river fishing i generally am not going to sit in a spot for very long if im not catching anything. While this is not always the case ive found that if i dont catch a fish right away or within the first 20-30 min (or at least am having bites or missing fish) i will try another area within the eddy or shoreline im fishing or completely pack up and try an entirely different spot. On the river ive found that if the area is a good spot odds are it’s probably a little staging area and going to be holding enough fish that i will usually pick one up pretty quickly. Very often times withint the first 5-10 minutes. Again this is not always the case but is a good rule of thumb. However if its a decent size little shoreline or something where the channel is on the opposite side of the river and the current is maybe only flowing apx half as fast as it does in the channel and my shoreline is say 30-40 yards long i cannot emphasize enough on trying out a couple spots along that shoreline. All to often i see someone try a spot like that out. Pull up where they think the fish are. And then when they dont catch anything they pull anchor and leave the area entirely in search of another area. When in reality if they had just slide upstream 15-20 yards or downstream 15-20 yards it would have completely changed their outcome. So again if you find a spot you think is going to be holding fish make sure to cover it in its entirety before writing a spot off. I live by the Detroit river go on your boat drift down the river with a jig or walleye rig bouncing your sinker off the bottom so you dont snag as you drift with the current fished that river all my life.

Yup, I absolutely hate it! 😂👊 Good memory. We only had bait with that day because we were going to be chasing sturgeon later. But gotta say, I was glad to have it with that day 'cuz it saved the walleye bite for us in that super-dirty water. Wasn't all that excited to clean up the mess it made of the carpet though! new to fishing. What do you mean by 'scented'?
I wasn't adding any extra scent to it (with a spray or gel like you can buy) but those frozen, salted emerald shiners are killed in a salt brine solution and then cured in salt...which gives off a lot of scent in the water for walleyes to track down.

Dam the fish are getting mess up
The line doesn't look like it is able to slip through the sinker. Maybe the swivel is stuck in the hole through the sinker. Should put a bead in front of the swivel for multiple reasons. Also protects the knot.
Alot of people will set their rigs like that. Im with you tho and def prefer to have my line be able to slip through the weight. In my opinion when they pick up that bait i dont want them to pick the weight up off bottom hence why i prefer my line to be able to slip through the weight. I feel like when they do pick the weight up is often times what will trigger them to spit the lure. But anyways ya up here in N. Dakota fishing the missouri river upstream from lake sakakawea either slowly pulling lindys and jigs upstream in slack water and then drifting back down is essentially the main way everyone fishes walleye around here as well as anchoring or spot locking with the same lindy or jig presentation.
Figured this out looking for catfish, all I can say is please take this down. lol

Salted minnow. They freeze emerald shiners and preserve 'em in salt. Fish love 'em up there.

What's a eater size on a walleye ?
Personal preference and really depends on the body of water. For me personally, I like to keep 14-16" fish for the dinner table.
