- Nick Nurse (The Toronto Raptors) explains that it's the size of Kawhi Leonard's hands that creates an unnatural spin on the ball which allows for shots like the game winner against The Philadelphia 76ers in the playoffs to go in.

JJ needs to have a shooters episode man. As a young player developing my jumper it would be awesome to have an episode just breaking down good shooting form and shooter's mentality. Gilbert did one like 3 years ago with lethal shooter and it was awesome
For sure!!
@BeezyBaby what are you talking about dude he just made a suggestion it’s not like he’s forcing him at all
@BeezyBaby obv people on youtube can show that, but we wanna see it first person and learn from one of the best shooters to ever play!
I agree, I’m a hooper too. I wanna hear him talk about a shooters mentality. How he built his mental to not dwell on miss shots
Look at the Duncan Robinson ep. He said something that stuck w/ me. “Catch Eye , Keep Eye”
There's a difference between having big hands that can be used to just palm the ball (examples - Wilt, Shaq, etc) and having big hands to palm the ball along with the finger finesse and touch to control and feel the ball (examples - Julius Erving, Michael Jordan, Kawhi, etc).
Players having big hands is an advantage yes, but the true advantage lies in players having big hands that can feel the ball as an extension of their body. Something very few players ever in the history of the NBA have.
For sure, i’d add Giannis to that list as well - not as much with the shooting touch but more his handles combined with his ability to effortlessly stuff the ball with both hands - more Dr J than Jordan/Kawhi
It's also something about how thick and rigid their fingers are that makes the Shaq and wilt's hand types struggle to control the ball. Jordan and kawhi have long dextrose fingers, and they get alot of their control from their fingertips
Great touch is about more than just shooting. It’s about ball handling, rebounding, passing, tipping the ball in, laying it up, etc.
Wilt had great touch with the basketball. He may not have been a great shooter, but big guys weren’t shooting the ball much back then, and they weren’t practicing their shooting. Shaq had great touch too. His hands were almost too big to shoot, but he did everything else well. Watching him shoot free throws was like watching an adult try to shoot on one of those kiddie hoops.
Giannis has great touch too. Same with Elgin Baylor, and Rajon Rondo, who both have really large hands. Kd, Magic, LeBron, Larry… they all had big hands and great touch with the basketball.
@@sudiboa1296 I agree. A lot of big men are awkward in their bodies. They don’t embrace their size, they resist it. They are clumsy and slow. Shaq was different. He has incredible quickness, great footwork, and great touch with the ball. But there were still times where his size made it more difficult for him.
It comes down to bigger men having to use finesse less for plays to go their way, therefore smaller guys get better at their craft as it’s necessary to their success
We are in the mid range evolution. Most teams do 3 and drive but the winning teams use midrange more often like the nets with KD, the sun's with CP3, Warriors with Steph's forgotten mid range so the trend is 3 and drive but the winners know how to use every spot on the floor.
The midi is the superstar's shot. Especially since the 3pt revolution has made so much space there. If all those scrubs were in the midrange zones then the superstar midrange would need some incredible shooting to be as effective as it is now to counter the inevitable defensive pressure they would attract.
The mid range never went away for superstars
Every single NBA championship for the last 25 years has had at least one great mid range shooter
don't forget k mid for the bucks. When he plays well, he is very efficient in that area, but he can sometimes be very inconsistent.
i think floater is the most underrated shot and people use it more frequently too
The part about the abnormal spin and it's importance was really interesting.
Magnets will do that.
Shaq is sweating after seeing the title
The long 2s will make a comeback because defenses are defending the rim and the 3 pt line so hard. Stars like DeRozen have made a comeback from it.
Fax
He’s still not shooting long twos, he shooting midranges around the free throw line, which he is shooting 50% at (Similar to KD!).
@@willcarlen2751 yea but DeRozan has been shooting mid range shots for years over 42 percent
R u actually dumb founded, DeRozen never made a comeback, he’s always been this nice
@@sakariaabdullah629 He's been nice but not this nice it's more of a comeup then a comeback

Serious question. Do you think bringing back hand checks would limit perimeter play? Now that hooking your arms into a defender while rising for a shot isn't called a foul, will hand checks further limit the prevalence of 3's?
Just like Jordan
He’s better then Jordan

That Dr. J sweater is 🔥🔥🔥
Maybe true because backspin is everything for shooting touch but guys with huge hands definitely have a harder time learning to develop that touch.
"Non paint 2s" ladies and gentlemen, I continue to preach the mid range/short mid jumper is still the most important... especially in the playoffs... even amidst all this 3 point revolution
yes because it fluctuates the least percentagewise. lebron's paint turnaround jumper kawhi's midrange kd's midrange khris' midrange... they been winnin
Counterpoint: the floater. Draws the paint defender out and lets the corners crash the boards for putbacks.

Nick Nurse is a certified G
Nice symbolism with the 6
JJ one of the greatest ever 3 point king
Is their any benefits for smaller hands
JJ I was skeptical in the beginning but you are a natural, you can get a big job with one of the networks or if you wish to keep your independence and freedom to not be politically correct you can work on your own platform, either way, I see success in your future.
What a cool shirt.
I need a JJ x Arenas podcast

Best coach in the nba . Hands down
I wish it was mandatory for Highschool coaches to watch this podcast once a week.
HUGE gap in basketball philosophy and IQ.
even pro coaches. make huge blunders. Lionel hollins gimme a break.
@@theartofcompetition5965 well there’s a reason he’s not a head coach anymore lol
NBA players and high schoolers should never be coached with the same philosophies and schemes because high school ball is a far different game. Our local team just bricked 3/23 and got blown out. Some high school coaches are teaching kids that mid range is obsolete and every PG is the next steph.
@@swankmastermind7407 mind blowing that he was coaching at the highest level of competition in the first place.
The iq part is logical, there’s a reason why NBA coaches are by far the most paid. 90% of high iq coaches want to get there.
The Klaw!!
One of the greatest shot of all-time vs 76ers, wish he stayed in the 6.......
Most guys with big hands struggle to shoot. Hence why Durant is such an anomaly. And Giannis isn't a pure shooter, as much as he seems to work like crazy on every aspect of his game. And why most centers through history haven't been able too shoot. I think these guys' hands are so big that they end up holding the ball flat in their hands and it ends up affecting their feel on the ball, and flattening their release. Even look at guards with bigger hands like Andre Iguodala, Michael Jordan, Rajon Rondo, Dennis Schroeder, etc.
Durant doesn’t have huge palms just long hands
I think during a photo shoot Durant said he couldn’t palm a ball, Durant actually got small hands
You’re saying Jordan wasn’t a good shooter ?
