    Tim Duncan didn't even average what Kawhi is averaging during his MVP seasons. The Spurs system is great for improving shot efficiency, but not for posting gaudy stat lines yet Kawhi still manages to stand out.

  • @Konphetty

    You Westbrook fanboys know why Kawhi doesnt average as much rebounds as Russell does? Because hes too busy playing real defense on his man in the perimeter unlike that stat padding guy from OKC who leaves his man open and wait under the rim for an undeserving rebound.

      I'm pulling for Harden in the MVP race, but Kawhi is my 2nd choice. Westbrook's ranked dead last in contested shots in the NBA among players who play 30+ minutes. His stat padding is obnoxious.

      Ikr. He runs tons of isolation and is a decent passer and an excellent rebounder. We all know about his defense so I don't have to say anything. But his scoring is amazing, I think he had around 19-20 30 point games last season. And one time even got 4+ steals in a game 5 times in a row. But I guess triple doubles are cooler..

    Reigning 2-time DPOY leading a 2nd seed in PPG with high efficiency isn't MVP because some 10th seed is only playing one side of the ball, with historic usage, highest ever combined misses and turnovers as well as being given free boards by his bigs? But omg it's a triple double average!!! #idioticnarrative

      Derik Nobles There's no point in mentioning IT when you have 4 players having legendary seasons.
      LeBron is the first to average 26 8 8 on 54
      Harden is averaging 29 8 11
      Westbrook 33 11 10
      and Kawhi has unstoppable defense and averaging in the 20s with the 2nd best record. Where does IT fit into this. He has the most normal stats for a MVP candidate and he's not even getting the scoring title.

    • @deriknobles5194
      @deriknobles5194 7 лет назад +10

      LeBron James : Isaiah Thomas is tied for 2nd in the league in pppg while playing less minutes per game than James Harden and Westbrook and LeBron, and he's shooting a better field goal percentage than Westbrook and Harden, and he's shooting better than all of them from the free throw and three point line. And lets not forget that he's most likely led the Celtics to the number 1 seed in the East and we must factor in that he has done this at 5'9!! LeBron deserves to be in the top 5 in MVP voting, however, tonight he will miss his 8th game of the season and this automatically eliminates him from the top three in my opinion

    • @jarettblack9713
      @jarettblack9713 7 лет назад +5

      Jarett Black I'm not arguing that Isaiah Thomas is the MVP I'm simply saying that he should be in the conversation a lot more. I'm looking on NBA Gametime and all im seeing and hearing is Westbrook Harden and LeBron. And i would agree with you that Isaiah has better teammates (and a better coach, I might add but the Eastern conference is not as easy as you think. In the West, outside of Golden State and San Antonio, the conference is the same as the east. Houston can score but play little to no defense just like the Cavs, and Utah and the Clippers are no better than the Raptors and Wizards

    kawhi's team has 3 starters who average 5ppg. his bigs cant play defense. he is not the point guard, so he doesn't have the ball in his hands all the time. but he still leads his mediocre team to the 2nd seed of the western conference. he is out there almost every game (pop makes him rest) giving 100%, winning games, and these guys want to talk about westbrook or harden. c'mon man. harden has trillions of skilled shooters and big men, westbrook does whatever he wants with the ball and they are not even close to the spurs record. give him some credit, just like the coach did.

    • @heatlifer1531
      @heatlifer1531 7 лет назад

      Ok let's table the team's rating and look at individual defensive rating. Remember how LeBron "wasn't a good defender anymore and doesn't try on defense anymore" last year? Kawhi now has the exact same defensive rating as Lebron of last year lol.
      In fact, Kevin Durant has better numbers all around in points rebounds assists (as does LeBron over Kawhi including fg%) and Kevin Durant has a better defensive rating than Kawhi and a better Offensive Rating as well.
      He's a tremendous two way player. His offense needs some more work and his defense fell off quite a bit given the offensive workload he has had to pick up.
      Let's not forget about a third of the way through the season his matchups were shooting 44% against him when the year before he was holding his matchups to the low 30's. Being more aggressive on offense will make your defense suffer.
      The one that sounds butthurt is you John, I post stats and you're offended and that's fine but you don't have to name call because you're offended by a stat.

    • @johnhenry9554
      @johnhenry9554 7 лет назад

    kawhi's game really reminds me of young michael jordan, just less prolific
    he just plays in a more team based system so he gets less shots/points, but defensively, he's right there with MJ, he's got huge hands, a very nice mid range game, good 3 pt shooter, and post game/footwork, and will dunk on you given the opportunity.
    if kawhi doesn't win this year, he will for sure win the mvp in the future barring a career ending injury. i mean he's only 25 yeas old. he has improved greatly every year he's been in the league. i can't imagine how good he's going to be in 2 or 3 years when he hits his prime.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video Coach. But, we have all seen this 'narrative' run by the media w.r.t. Spurs since they began winning titles with Tim Duncan. The ESPN crew over the years have mastered a formula where they ignore the Spurs until the playoffs and then promptly discredit their players by propping up Greg Popovich. I've seen this happen to Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker over the years and now unfortunately it is Kawhi's turn. They will act as if Coach Popovich has the ability to lead this years Lakers or Nets to the playoffs, while undermining the Spurs players. That is why I have never cared for All-Star or MVP on a player's resume. The only award that seemed unbiased and true was the All-NBA Team, which they have ruined this year by making it count towards a player's future contract. Basically never trust the 'official media' on anything: sports, politics, wars etc.

  • @ste9240

    The main reason why Kawhi should be MVP is that he literally destroyed all the opponents who were guarding him or who were defended by him: KD, Lebron, PG13, Carmelo, Harden, Butler, Wiggins...The only superstar duel he lost the whole season was the one against Curry a couple of weeks ago.
    He is the greatest defender in the league, even if this year I think Draymond or Rudy deserve the DPOY, and he has become a top 5 scorer in the league considering the amount of shots he takes and how efficient he is.
    He is probably with IT and Westbrook the clutchest player in the league, I've lost counts of how many times he has saved Spurs' ass during this season.
    And last but not least stop saying stupid ass stuff like without Kawhi the Spurs are a Playoff team, Tony is washed up, Green is probably the worst SG in the league as offensive game, Pau Gasol and LA play no defense at all and Manu is pretty old too.
    Houston without Harden would beat the Spurs without Kawhi 100%
    I'm okay however with Harden or Westbrook winning the MVP but most of you guys shouldn't be disrespecting Kawhi like that

    I understand he is now treated as a superstar much more than he was back in 2017 but i do think this is the best version of kawhi leonard.... the defense he played in 2017 was defensive player of the year worthy while his offense was 80% of what it is today... granted nowadays he is way more confident in isos, better at passing... but that defense... plus i really enjoyed the fact that he was mvp worthy and still half the time would just be a cog in the wheel (left him with much more energy for defense).

  • @Dswizzle96
    @Dswizzle96 7 лет назад +5

    Kawhi is the MVP. Everyone is so blinded by the triple doubles that people do not realize that there are two sides to basketball. There's the offensive side and the defensive side. No other top 5 MVP candidate plays both ends of the floor like kawhi. Kawhi can shut any player he wants down and can score 30 points on the other side of the floor. Westbrook has had the greatest individual season but that doesn't mean he's the most valuable player of the league. Kawhi for MVP

    • @kohsmoger1567
      @kohsmoger1567 7 лет назад

      Lebron plays both ends but he kind of coasts in the regular season. But kawhi isn't nearly the playmaker Lebron is.

  • @stephencheney9811
    @stephencheney9811 7 лет назад +5

    I think with each candidate this year having a good argument for him, the best way to decide is to see who has the weakest argument against him. Westbrook's team finished 6th, and he's been giving up lots of open shots so that he can get rebounds. Harden is not known as a strong defender, and while his team has the third best record in the league, it's 3rd in the conference as well, which historically doesn't win MVP awards. LeBron's obviously stout on defense and has his team 2nd in his conference, but he also has two other current all-stars on his team; the Cavs were still doing poorly down the stretch.
    Kawhi's stats aren't as eye-popping as theirs, but they're all primary ball handlers for their teams. Also, it must be noted, in the famous year when Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double, he didn't win MVP. It was also the year when Wilt got 50 PPG and 25 RPG, and he didn't win the MVP. It went to Bill Russell. Kawhi is the closest thing to Bill Russell this year. (Then again, defense probably was factored more into the MVP race back then since they didn't have a DPOY award.) Kawhi has plenty of former all-stars on his team (Manu, Tony, Pau, LaMarcus), but if we counted those over against LeBron, he'd also have former all-stars Kyle Korver and Deron Williams. I think the arguments against Kawhi are the weakest.

Unfortunately, people keep overlooking this kind of efficiency for superficial triple-double statlines garnered through poor defense on the three, and poor assist-turnover ratio. If that's what people want, then let Westbrick get his MVP. One thing's for sure though, he'll never get that finals MVP if he's just after the stats. #KlawMVP4Real #KlawFinalsMVP

      BBALLBREAKDOWN he's an mvp an also someone who travels as *exposed by you (which clearly makes kawhi underrated. why would you the video if he's not, right {?}) & according to you is not the best defensive player in the league {?} even though he keeps teams best players % the same as they have to pick up the dribble when he guards them & they never see the ball again in the possession. that's phenomenal defense. draymond makes said players % drop which is great defense but at least they put up a shot against him. ...system player? every team has a system. d'antoni is obvious so is thibodeaus' as evident with joakim noah dpoy & being a legitimate canidate for dpoy while playing under thibodeau; why? because of a system: every team has one. system system system

    MVP stands for 'most valuable player'. The player that adds the most value to their team. Yes Kawhi is great and the stats back him up, plus he's undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the league. But what Harden and Westbrook do for their teams to keep them in the running is remarkable. I would also put Lebron and IT in that list because their teams will literally sink without them.

    What I like about Kawhi offensive game, and the Spurs system in general, is how versatile it is. Leonard is mixing a 90s offensive playstyle with sharp 3pt shooting, which makes him a Swiss Army knife offensively. Compare this to say Golden State. I love the Warriors, but I feel they are entirely too reliant on the three. I don't mind three point shooting being a main option, but as the playoffs have proved over the last 2 yrs, GSW struggles mightily when the 3s don't fall. In the Spurs system, with it's mix of shot selection, they have a better chance of pulling a game out of fire if their first offensive option isn't working.

LeBron have a better chance too if not for all the cavs meltdown this season

    I'd love to see either Kawhi or Westbrook win MVP but I think Kawhi is unique in the fact that he plays the best defense in the league, both perimeter and help defense, has been the leader for the Spurs sometimes winning games by himself AND he has been putting MVP numbers in terms of his offensive production too. Don't get me wrong Westbrook has been the most important player for Old and without him they would probably suffer but I personally believe Kawhi's above elite defense is what makes him MVP for me

    People always underate kawhi. He ticks more boxes than any other candidate. Westbrook is inefficient, doesn't play defence and turns the ball over way too much. Harden turns the ball over too much and plays no defence. Lebron is on the 4th best team out of the candidates and takes too many plays off. Kawhi is the best scorer, the best defender in the league, doesn't turn the ball over, the best team record and is one of the most efficient players of all time. If he wasn't so quiet and humble this MVP race wouldn't even be in question and it shouldn't be. People talk about how he has the best supporting cast but nearly every Spurs player this year part from him is having the worst year of their entire career and they still win 60. People always mention westbrooks clutch moment but kawhi has hit just as many game winners and locked up some of the best offensive players in the league in crucial moments. Kawhi can match nearly everything the other candidates do

    Agreed. Westbrook and Harden are not MVP. Sure Kawhi stats are not great compared to westbrook and harden, but thats because of the spurs system preventing kasha from being even greater! Put Kawhi on another team and he averages 30+ PPG. Thats the curse of playing under pop.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who would vote for Kawhi Leonard. Not to mention he's a better 2 way player than James Harden and Russell Westbrook, especially James Harden, doesn't turn the ball over 5 times per game, and is way more efficient than both of them.

  • @commenting4909

    Coach Nick, do you feel like since Steve Nash won his MVP awards that the perception for MVP has shifted somewhat more to all round offensive contributions? Since that tends to get more media coverage than great defensive work? It's hard to quantify defensive effort (as you say team defensive rating is skewed if you have sub par defensive team mates), so unless Kawhi puts up bigger numbers, like say 27-6-7, his defensive contributions probably couldn't make up the difference in the MVP voting due to exposure.
