Preparing yarn for machine knitting using the Royal jumbo winder

An overview of how I prepare my hand knitting hanks/commercially bought balls of yarn to be used on the knitting machine. This is my preferred winder, almost..... it's just missing a little electricity to self wind!

Why do you not put it through both hoops? Why only one?

If I threaded it through both it would end up in a tangled mess. I'd imagine the two arms could mean that you could wind two strand on but I haven't tried that so I'm not sure how it would feed off for the knitting machine.
