Thank you so much! I wanted to see what these machines do before buying because I like my yarn in a ball not skein and could not imagine these making a ball even though people keep calling them “yarn baller machines” and your video is straight to the point and showed exactly what I needed to know, it is more of a “cake” than a ball. Great video, happy crafting!
@michellestephens8169 You are exactly right. Many people place the bottom arm in front of the Philips screw and the screw is just sitting there doing nothing. I’ve had my winder for about 2 years and have been doing it wrong all along. It still works but this correct way I think gives it more stability. I had a problem today and did some research. I came across your comment which intrigued me. So I went to the Stanwood website. It clearly shows in their picture that the bottom arm hooks around the Philips screw and then you attach the washer, nut and tighten. I zoomed in on the pictures just to be sure but it is clearly visible. I just fixed mine tonight and it’s much sturdier. I wanted to come back here and thank you. I very much appreciate your tip!😊🤗
it’s more of a preference if i’m being honest; if used from the inside, it can collapse inwards which risks tangling, whereas if used from the outside, it can roll around and unravel if not secured. my grandmother taught me to use it from the outside so that’s just what i grew up with, but it’s best to use trial and error to find your preference.
A video on trouble shooting would be great. Mine is similar to yours but I have issues with wind the tension is off it gets in the gears or I end up having to re make the same ball of yarn over and over because the tension is to loose and they fall aprt
I'm having a problem getting the long arm to stay put between the butterfly and the washer. I've tried putting the arm on top of the washer and around/behind the butterfly, and under the washer and butterfly, but either way it keeps coming out. It's like the butterfly needs to be bigger in order to hold down the arm. What do I do? Thanks.
I just bought one of these and there were no instructions.. that rubber washer on the bottom bar... did that come with it? I should I just look for one on my own that fits?
I just got mine today, but the skein I wound didn't have a center pull. It's Big Twist Soft. It's a wonderful machine, but I had to unwind a section from the skein, then wind/cake on the winder, stop, and repeat. It took a very long time and it was frustrating. But, the cake wound perfectly on the winder. Great tension, an I'm thrilled with the end result. But I can't find any info or suggestions to help with skeins without a center pull. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for the great video. 🙂
I’m so sorry! Somehow I missed your comment. You can center pull from this skein of yarn but the bigger name brands (like this one) are notorious for spitting out a ton of “yarn vomit” before you can get to it. Hope this helps!!
I have had trouble with center pull yarn. It tangles and gets stuck when pulling by hand while stitching. I don't know how you are able to do this. I would like to rewind my skeins. It would make it easier for a yarn bowl!
How is the tension of the cake you’re pulling from? If it feels really tight, that could be your issue. You want the cakes to feel springy. Sometimes I will rewind mine again so that I have an easier time with the tension. Hopefully this helps 💖
I did mine 4 times and each time it starts 2 fall off the top of the cake and get messy, yet its not even at the top of the plastic piece ao there’s definitely enough room
It’s just a preference. I do find that the tension is more even. Also, I’d rather know ahead of time if there’s a weird break or knot somewhere in the yarn
I got mine from Jimmy Beans. You can also purchase them through the manufacturer, Stanwood Needlecraft. They’re on Amazon too but beware of counterfeits. Happy crafting!! 🧶
You and others are showing the arm installed incorrectly. The instructions clearly say the arm attaches to the base “…..between the washer and the base plate. Position the wire arm so the end loop is behind the small Phillips screw.” The wing nut then tightens down on the washer to hold the arm in place.
I don't want to be a downer here BUT according to the Stanwood video instructions for this ball winder, the feed arm is attached by removing the nut and washer. Place the crook of the feed arm around the screw that is behind the nut assembly. Place the washer over the arm to keep it stable and then tighten the screw.
Mine SUCKS compared to this one 🙄 it skips and jumps around and falls off of the table, it's so frustrating. I'm gonna have to buy this one for myself instead 🥲
Best video to watch every time I forget how to do this.
Thank you so much! I bought one and the instructions were not clear at all. I was able to make it work easily because of your video! 🙂
Of course! I’m so happy it helped. Best yarn winder ever once you get it going 😆💗
@@Yarndrasil 🥰
Thank you so much for this video! I recently got my winder and have been too scared to use it, but it’s so much easier than I expected!
So happy to hear that you’re enjoying your new toy!!

Awesome! I’m so happy to hear that it helped! 🧶
Such a simple and great tutorial, thank you
Mesmerizing! Thanks for uploading
Thank you for the demonstration.
You’re welcome!!
Great tutorial.. 👍 I love learning new things
Happy you found it helpful!! 😊
Just a tip...that bottom arm is supposed to go UNDER the nut, not over, and BEHIND the Philips screw. It keeps it from moving to the side as you work.
Correction, under the washer.
Under the washer, below the butterfly nut.

Ty so much!
I have the same ball winder. I'm having trouble on mini skeins. Any suggestions???
wow that looks so cool!
It’s also relaxing 😌
@@Yarndrasil it is ✨
How did you Stabilize the arm mine flips back-and-forth
OMG! I'm over satisfied 😮
Well done, now it is time to try it out.
Best of luck! :)
Should you use the yarn from the outside in or the inside out?

I'm a little late to the party, but an inexpensive yarn bowl is great for these! Just make sure you check bowl size before you buy. Happy Stitchcraft!
Once you have used the ball winder, are you able to pull directly from the center.
This is my question as well. I can't find an answer if it's already in the comments
A video on trouble shooting would be great. Mine is similar to yours but I have issues with wind the tension is off it gets in the gears or I end up having to re make the same ball of yarn over and over because the tension is to loose and they fall aprt
If you run the yarn through your fingers between the skein and post it will give you a consistent tension.
I noticed you turned the ball over. Do you start using yarn from the bottom or top? I recently have a problem where my yarn is twisting back on itself
Do you knit from the center of the cake?
I love this winder❤️❤️❤️
It’s the best 💗
Mine seem kind of tight trying to turn it how do I troubleshoot that?
Ok I just ordered🎉 I use chunky yarn hope it works well

Girl thank you cause I was wondering what the rubber stopper was for the longest time 😂😂😂😂😂😂

So mesmerizing! 😵💫😍
When I first got it, I spent the whole day winding lol 😆
Great video
If you are going to do a project with 2 or 3 strands at a time, would it work to make a cake with all 3 together and wind them at once?
Why is my yarn doubling then jamming? TY
the yarn winding part (cone) constantly popped off during winding. was i too fast? is there a way to "lock it in place"?
Is a 10 ounce a good size to purchase? I have an old Brother and I have to make to cakes from a 100 gm skein.
Yes, the Stanwood featured in this video can wind up to 283 grams.
I like to cake my yarns before i work as well no knots. and my yarn is neat and pretty on my wall
Thx for sharing
Best Joni Mitchell vocal
Why would someone turn a skein into a ball? Is it a personal preference thing, or is a ball just better to work with?
It’s just a preference. I do find that the tension is more even. Also, I’d rather know ahead of time if there’s a weird break or knot somewhere in the yarn
What brand is this ?
thank you sm
Thank you!!!
You’re welcome!!
Thank you
No I need to get one where did you get this one from?
I got mine from Jimmy Beans. You can also purchase them through the manufacturer, Stanwood Needlecraft. They’re on Amazon too but beware of counterfeits. Happy crafting!! 🧶
from where can i purchase it???
What is the company that made it ??
Stanwood Needlecraft
Why would my yarn cone shape on the Stanwood yarn winder? I’ve tried everything to prevent this
It cones from the underside, I forgot to mention.
Hi! What brand yarn winder is this? It did a fantastic job! Thank you ❤
I’ve got a winder very similar to yours and the yarn keeps jumping out of the lower loop. Any suggestions anybody? , it’s very frustrating,
You and others are showing the arm installed incorrectly.
Ohhh good eye. The washer should be on top of the feed arm.
I didn't have any luck with that mine still kept swinging so hubby added 2 screws on each side of it to keep it stable There's no way I can move now
That link leads to knitting needles.
Thanks for telling me! Just fixed it: amzn.to/42wWnWU
The washer goes on top of the arm
Yah I pinned a comment to make this info more visible. Sadly I can’t add a text update to the video or I would 😂
Wingnut not butterfly screw
👍🏻🙏🏻
Mine SUCKS compared to this one 🙄 it skips and jumps around and falls off of the table, it's so frustrating. I'm gonna have to buy this one for myself instead 🥲
It’s definitely worth the investment! The all plastic ones can be so frustrating 🙃
Thank you!
