A tip for you. The large arm also has to be hooked around the Philips screw. Also it should be straight in front of the spool. That should help with tension 😊
Thank you for this. I literally just received mine an hour ago and tried it out and couldn't figure out how to keep the yarn guide from moving. This helped and the tips from the comments below.
This has been so helpful! I have wound a few cakes using this Stanwood but it’s been quite a few months. I went to wind a pretty expensive Hank of yarn today and what a disaster. After I finally finished I realized that the arm has to be straight in front of the shaft not to the left or the right. I believe mine was rotor the right so I kept getting those 2 strands like you showed what happened to you when the metal arm moved. Fingers crossed the next one works correctly. I also have trouble keeping fingering weight yarn in those slots. It slips right out. Anyway, thanks for a great video. Very helpful!😊
just got mine today, but the skein I wound didn't have a center pull. It's Big Twist Soft. It's a wonderful machine, but I had to unwind a section from the skein, then wind/cake on the winder, stop, and repeat. It took a very long time and it was frustrating. But, the cake wound perfectly on the winder. Great tension, an I'm thrilled with the end result. But I can't find any info or suggestions to help with skeins without a center pull. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for the great video. 🙂
Thank you for the tutorial. This was also on my wish list and bought it five years ago I took it out to use again and I don’t know why I cannot get the yarn to sit snuggly on the cone the cone seems to move so fast. Appears tight etc. Just putting this out here in case anyone else has a thought. Thanks again
I own this Stanwood model, and my experience has been it can accommodate a 7oz #4 weight skein of yarn. As disappointing as that is, there are ways to work around it. For larger skeins, I wind half from the inside and the remainder of the skein from the outside. It's not ideal, but it allows for a continuous strand of yarn. It is important to apply some tension to the yarn while winding. Otherwise, the cake is spongy. However, if too much tension is applied, it stretches out the yarn, which is never good. Why wind yarn skeins? It provides an opportunity to inspect the yarn for flaws, i.e., thick and thin spots and knots. These flaws interrupt color flow with variegated/ombre/striped yarns, which may leave you short on yarn to finish your 🧣🧤🧦projects. 🤗🧶

Thank you @Kiwi Crocheter
Onde cmprar? Vivo na Espanha. Obrigada
Yes, it must be hooked behind the Phillips screw! That's why that arm was moving to the left.
I come back to your video every time I need to wind a skein🙄. Thank you ever so much.

Thanks. I was puzzled getting it out of the box - I'm visual and this really helped me get started. 😊
Excellent instruction. Thanks

Yes! I agree. I didn't know what I was missing.
Thank you! Mine was just delivered today, so this is timely!
Yay! I hope you like it. I am really enjoying mine.

I have a question: is it possible to wind yarn with the dismal arm to the left instead of straight up? Thanks
Yes
How wide does it usually turn out Ik inches? I want to make a stand to hold 4 of then
I have the save wonder, but mine makes a very LOUD noise while winding.
Furthermore, I haven’t been able to wound lately, don’t know what’s going on
thank you for showing us this I almost threw mine in the trash. lol
Omg! Thank you so much I couldn’t figure out why my yarn wouldn’t roll evenly. It’s cause the arm was moving! I was getting super angry lol thanks!
Instructions show the long arm must be also around the Philip crew. The video didn’t do it correctly.
This is so lovelyyy
A ha! You just showed me what caused the problem I as having!
I didn't buy a ball winder for 25 years, trying to save money. Bought myself one for my birthday. I could kick my own butt for waiting so long!
Thank you so much!
Thank you
I know this is 3 yrs ago but I'm wondering why she is caking a skein of yarn??? Why would you do that? I only cake the hanks. Did I miss something?
I need one of these
Thank you!
Check photo 1if instructions, long arm must be around Philip screw. Video is not correct about that part.
Please show new video applying the tension. Thx
So much easier if you use a umbrella instead of your hand
👍🏽
