    I have a standard winder and the jumbo like yours. They are essential when spinning my own yarn which I make into skeins then wind into the cakes. Also, for knitting, crocheting and with my Addi machine the yarn flows so smoothly. I hate having to keep stopping to unwind more or to chase the ball of yarn which has escaped across the floor (in spite of using a yarn bowl) or rescue it from my cat who thinks all this yarn lark is all for him to play with! Essential bit of kit for anyone who works with yarn. I always pull the yarn when knitting etc.. from the centre.

    This is the one I bought and I do love it! I have re-caked many balls of yarn on it so far, and I have personally found that cranking slower rather than faster is more effective than winding faster. This model has the extra gear in it compared to others that look similar (on Amazon), so one crank gives you more bang for your buck's worth of winding. ;) I have tried going faster, but it is harder to catch those knots coming out of the skein, for one thing, and I find that sometimes, the cake on the spindle doesn't wind properly (or as nicely) when I go faster. In any case, either way this thing is great, and I love re-winding most of my yarns so that I can catch if there are big knots in it, etc., before getting those trampling through my knitting machine feed!!! :D

      I agree that going slower makes a nicer cake. Even the one I did for the video isn’t as nice as some of the ones I’ve done. I got a little excited!!! 😂 haha!

    I love mine. The yarn unwinds smoothly, keeping me from having to untangle yarn coming from a skein. They are often under $20 and well worth the cost.
    My only negative comment is that my cats think it is a toy. 🎉

    I bought one of those beige & red ones when I first started this craft about 2 months ago, which has been fine for smaller cakes however unlike this one, you can't mount it onto anything too thick - thankfully I have my glass dining table which is apprx 8-10mm thick & I can just mount it there, albeit it tends to slip off at times as I'm winding. However, thanks to you my friend, I just ordered one like yours for the larger cakes but I noticed it can be mounted onto thicker tables or bench tops which is awesome too. Now I'll be superorganised, - teehee :D

    Hi Shelley - I took your advice and purchased this larger yarn winder. I cannot tell you enough, how much I love it. Does not matter if it is a small cake or a large cake you are making - just fantastic. I do, however, have a question. Is there an easy way to keep the end out of the ball? I prefer to knit from the inside of a ball or cake of yarn rather than the outside, but when I make the cakes, it is sometimes difficult to find the start of the cake that has "disappeared" inside the cake as you keep turning the handle. Thanks

      @@miriamfreilich8003 I am like you. I have been pulling from the center. I don’t know if there is a trick to it. Maybe leave a longer tail hanging through the little slot that holds the yarn.

    Does this particular winder have metal gears?

  • @wdbreezy

    My yarn winder is inexpensive, but together with an Amish yarn swift it makes life so much easier !! (note to those new to yarn, you can’t feed yarn directly from a skein to the winder or knit from a skein. You’ll need a yarn umbrella, yarn swift, the back of a chair or a friend to hold the unfolded skein to wind it into a ball or cake).

      Hi Shelley 😊 I was referring to a hank/skein of yarn - the twisted bundle. It took me several tries and videos to learn how to unwind them to the yarn swift without tangle so I could cake them for knitting.

      My husband used to be a wonderful swift but since he died I have to use my wooden one. My cat loves it! I often wonder why some refer to balls of yarn as skeins. There is a big difference isn't there.

      @wdbreezy Год назад

      @@lunasmum6869 It sounds like your husband was a kind and patient man. I’m so sorry for your loss. 😔
      Yes, very different yarn winds. I don’t wind balls or bullet skeins into a cake anymore, only the twisted hanks (I guess not technically a skein, but I hear them called that where I live). When I first started knitting l bought four beautiful twisted hanks at a shop and was so excited to get home and knit. I quickly found out you can’t knit directly from them and off I went to buy more equipment!

      Do you mean from the ball that was on the floor being unwound? I did pull from the centre.
      Or do you mean from the new ball? If that’s what you mean, I can find it easily when I need it.

    What on earth. The cake this ball winder puts out is awful. I have one similar, but the ball mine puts out look way nicer than this. What on earth. Just spend the money for a Standwood winder.
