    There was a lot going on when it came to the Florida elections in the year 2000 so understandably this wasn’t making headline news. However a referendum had passed that election night that amended the state constitution with a mandate to build a high-speed rail system for Florida. Bullet trains were pretty appealing at the time. Over the following few years the newly created Florida High Speed Rail Authority looked at a Tampa-Orlando connection as their first phase, with plans to finish it by 2009. That involved coming up with a route between the two cities, and this is where the trouble began.
    The initial route, known as the Bee-Line Route, was planned to start at Orlando International Airport and make stops at the Orlando Convention Center, potentially Universal Studios and Seaworld, and then Walt Disney World, before continuing on to Lakeland and Tampa.
    Disney, well, they didn’t like that idea, and for good reason. The route would be ferrying tourists and passengers directly to some of their biggest competitors before them. It also made it easier for guests to leave Disney property and go spend their money elsewhere. Disney decided to instead propose an alternative route if the state wanted their cooperation. The Greeneway Route, as it was called, also started at Orlando International Airport. However it then went south, bypassing all those pesky competitors and going directly to Walt Disney World, before continuing on to Tampa.
    It was entirely self-serving, but then again, that was their job. Just as Universal and Seaworld backed the Bee-Line Route because it benefited their bottom line, Disney backed the Greeneway route because it benefited theirs.
    So what happened? Where’s our high-speed rail stop and why is Magical Express still around? Well as all of this drama played out, Governor at the time was against all of it. He argued that the state couldn’t handle the financial burden that a state-wide high-speed rail system would bring. With the 2004 elections right around the corner, he made an active push to repeal the amendment mandating the system, and guess who threw in a few bucks to promote the repeal when election season rolled around? Universal and Seaworld. They weren’t getting their train stops, so why should anyone else?
    The amendment would successfully be repealed that November, and while that didn’t formally end the Florida High Speed Rail Authority, it was a major symbolic roadblock. They pledged to keep working on a high-speed rail system but without the state funding they’d need and without a deadline looming, it just never happened.
    Over the following years there would be other attempts at high-speed rail proposals, and even just recently we saw news of a possible Disney World stop with Virgin Trains USA looking to expand from West Palm Beach to Orlando and Tampa.
    Will we eventually get a Walt Disney World rail stop? Who knows? But if history shows us anything, it’s that Disney is a heavyweight in the Central Florida region, and so if we do get one, it’ll probably be on their terms.

    Hey Rob, I love your videos. I want to add, as someone who studies the traffic and infrastructure of Orlando constantly, you're right Disney did agree to put funds up to build their own station. The word here in Orlando is that an "I-4 train will never happen because Disney won't let it." That's absolutely not true (it'll never happen because Florida - the state gov - isn't a fan of public funded infrastructure; think tolls highways, brightline, etc).
    Jeb Bush (and later Rick Scott) had funding for these projects killed. It was less about the initial funds, rather than the maintenance and operation costs. With most projects like this, the Federal government pays for around half, the state about a third, and the local counties and cities about a sixth. This is how the SunRail in Orlando was built. The problem comes usually five to tens years after opening, when the federal government is done paying for the project and the state and localities pay for it.
    That's why Scott denied funding in 2011. It's because he would have the state required to maintain it. With infrastructure and transportation projects, the federal government is like a drug dealer. Gives you the money for free and hooks you on it, and then you're stuck paying for a project. Public services never stay afloat because the localities can't afford to keep it afloat.
    Brightline (Virgin Trains, USA) won't do it... at least any time soon. Private companies have the opposite problem. The initial funding (assuming it's privately gathered from investors like Brightline's is, and not from the gov't), is too much to handle. The train then can't stay afloat because prices are too high trying to maintain and pay back the initial cost, plus interest. It works on existing track, but if they have to build new track, it's almost impossible as the company has to spend years doing land surveys, EPA reports, SEC documentation, etc; then comes the actual construction.
    Don't get me wrong I'm all for trains, but these are the underlying reasons why we don't have trains down here in Orlando. Keep up the good work!

      ArtieMcD except that building endless new highways never pay for themselves directly and only now are new highways having tolls. I think Florida is a perfect place for fed and state government funded rail because of all the tourists that go there from all over the world. They need to connect all the major airports and cities and of course the major tourist destinations. It’s not about whether all state residents in all the counties will use the system. It’s about the state investing in the future and keeping the tourists in the state.
      I think having the train run along the East coast is great for those cities along the route. They could have easily run the rail from Miami to Orlando using existing track or row. Now, people might actually someday get off in the cocoa beach area once they build attractive destinations. Besides KSC.

    Trust me...the “High Speed rail” we were promised here in California has been NOTHING but a money losing boondoggle! We were promised it would cost “no more than $17 billion” and be done by 2017...It’s now $77 billion, MAYBE...AND will be done in 2030 MAYBE!...can’t imagine this would’ve been ANY DIFFERENT!

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 6 лет назад +4

      Well a lot of that cost is due to overregulation due to US law and the need to buy the pieces of land the tracks, viaducts and more is gonna be on. Virgin trains in Florida is during really well though. As of right now they only run on freight rail tracks with a somewhat limited speed however their extension to Orlando and their new expansion plan with a Orlando Tampa via Disney route is also gonna be mostly dedicated high speed track.

    • @IcelanderUSer
      @IcelanderUSer 5 лет назад

      @IcelanderUSer 5 лет назад

      DrDewott California not building decent passenger rail between its major cities will ensure that those places in between will not enjoy the economic benefits the larger cities have enjoyed and will enjoy. Home prices will continue to rise, jobs will be created and those outside the cities will see none of it. Those in the cities will also be trapped spending far more on housing than they should. This applies to every region where capital is concentrated in cities with poor access to surrounding areas.

    They've had rail systems that travel from South Florida to Orlando, and they didn't catch on. Brightline travels from WPB to Miami, but their trains as so fast, people are dying, either from suicide or not hearing the train coming. They would need to elevate the train above the ground to reduce the death toll. According to the Sun Sentinel, 10 people have been killed by Brightline trains since the service started, and there was another a few days ago. Tampa to Orlando may be a good route, but going from the Miami area doesn't seem that big. The problem is, one must park their car at the train station and leave it there (unless a family wants to take the bus or Uber to the station). At this point, it's easier to drive, or rent a car.

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 6 лет назад +1

      Well still this is what people do. And with the cars, blame that on the absolute lack of efficienct public transport in the US overall. Something Brightline/Virgin is working on changing. And in terms of the deaths there are a number of reasons why. First of all the countless level crossings. Secondly the drivers and pedestrians themselves. Now I don't know about you but if they can't hear the level crossing nor the train or it's horn then these people really have problems tbh. Honestly if I had anything to say it's just natural selection, eliminating those not fit for society.

    If I could see a third layout - Skip the resorts entirely, and have Disney move their bus service to the nearest stop. Universal and SeaWorld might be able to foot the bill for their own bus ferrying as well. Bear in mind that this would require Disney cooperating with this change. That said, a shorter trip both ways could be argued to save them millions a year on gas and diesel.

    Damnit. I can't think of any Disney characters based near any of the London terminals. Because otherwise I think they would have accepted a service from the Magic Kingdom to (say) Euston even if it had to stop at Seaworld and Universal. Especially if Virgin Trains could run it (say the 18:30 from Euston could call at Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western, Preston, Lancaster, Carlisle, Gasgow Central, Inverness and stations to Jacksonville, Orlando, WDW and Tampa)?
    Maybe they could have run the B route, but run alternate trains to Universal, Seaworld and Disney, then in all cases on to Tampa? So it would still have been hard to use it to get from WDW to Universal?

    Privatized gains, socialized losses.
    This is what happens when corporations hold sway over legislatures so that public funds and investments benefit the highest bidder, not the broader economic interests of the people as a whole. Corporate and private "donors" should not be the primary decider as to what happens to public infrastructure.
    Europe and Asia enjoy 180+mph trains as a transportation option to driving and flying and we get corporate feudalism, crumbling infrastructure, and economic stagnation.
    Money must be removed from politics. People may be the ones who vote but the candidates and agendas are bought and paid for.
    Florida's low tax rates, which restricts public projects, require pandering to external sources of funding. Infrastructure isn't a profit center, it's an investment which requires constant maintenance. Roads cost more per mile and passenger to build and maintain but no one demands them to "turn a profit", but somehow trains do. That is why the US continues to fall behind the rest of the world in effective and energy-efficient transportation options.

      Disney technically had no holds over the government in the situation. Brightline/Virgin is looking much better, with private funding, and trainsets that are better suited to the route. The train station at the Orlando airport is already built, and the line to Tampa follows the Greenline route to a Disney station. No Convention Center/Universal stops. So, I'm hopeful.

    Every time I have to drive on I4 from Tampa to Orlando, I curse (mostly) Rick Scott for the most recent version of it killed, where Florida HAD THE MONEY SET ASIDE FOR IT and he killed it.
    I can honestly say I don't think I remember ever hearing about this version of it so I'll add Jeb to my list of people to curse the next time I have to drive on I4, especially since I almost always make that drive to go to Disney.
    Unfortunately, the virgin version of it is way too expensive for people to actually use it so we'll see what happens there.

    They want to expand the brightline to go from Ft Lauderdale-WPB to Orlando and then Tampa but local governments (looking at you Martin County) don't want a high speed train because of the noise. So they were in talks of quiet zones and slower zones. It's just going to be a train at this point and with all the stops I don't see how it is faster than driving. More eco probably. I'm still interested in it.

Despite that, there's always pipe dreams of overpriced bullet trains that simply are needed. NEED and WANT aren't the same thing, people need to understand that and get past it.

    I don't really understand this? The only use for such a rail wouldn't be just the amusement parks but city to city travelers and obviously stops at the shopping/ hotel districts(International drive) and downtown should have been all in the proposal, as surely most people don't solely go straight to and from Disney world from the airport right? Also as already pointed out Disney already had airport busses to cover that scenario. Surely having the route with an exclusive stop for Disney world would make it more privatized than anything else and not necessarily made the railway profitable.
    While we're at it was the other end going to end, Tampa Airport, Downtown, Busch Gardens?

    I wonder if the fallout of 9/11 helped killed this idea. Holiday peak times might've been bigger than previous years, but off peak was dead for all FL theme parks. You didn't need a fast pass for anything, everything was walk on. The down side is that many places, like universal, closed super early, like 6pm. Shows like Fantasmic were only on certain days, but Universal forced guests to wait a full hour for shows like Twister and Poseidon so they would have larger groups, with special effects shut off completely

    This is taken from the Brightline website ""Our Orlando station is nearly complete, but there is much left to do, including laying more than 170 miles of new track. Construction to Orlando is expected to take approximately three years, and we plan to start this year. Stay tuned for updates." It's happening already. I've taken Brightline from Fort lauderdale to Miami and it's great. Your luggage or purse is scanned simliar to the airport and everything is very organized and clean. If your luggage is a certain size you can check it for free and you pick it up at your stop. Not sure how this will work longer distances. Looking forward to taking the train to Orlando when it opens. There are several articles written about this and I've heard about it on the news because I live in South Florida.

    Well, hooray for Jeb Bush (not something I would normally say). High speed rail is just a string of boondoggles across the country that never live up to their own hype. This route might - just might - have been profitable between MCO and WDW, but the lack of real demand from WDW to Tampa would have dragged it down into the money pit. Mass transit by rail always sounds good, but it never works unless the population density is very high or the population is too poor to afford reliable automobiles.

    That’s really annoying. Disney has enough brand clout to counter any benefits Universal might get by “coming first” on a train map. Enough people go to both parks anyway. Plenty of people fly into Tampa to visit the parks. Who the hell’s gonna fly the family to Orlando, and think “well, the kids had their heart set on Disney but ooh! Sea World is moderately easier to get to, so let’s just go there!” Jeb’s family made their money from Big Oil so it’s sketchy that way too... I mean, the whole thing is just petty and it screwed over the whole state.

    I wouldn’t have said that Disney didn’t care about a high speed route from Tampa. I think any speed train from Tampa and its airport directly to Disney was something they’d care about. I’m surprised Disney didn’t apply pressure to Jeb to keep the project on track.
    The economic benefits of passenger rail aren’t always easy to see, or even if they are a politician won’t be in office long enough to see the benefits. So China will keep on building and growing and moving millions of people into the middle class and America will keep cutting taxes, building nothing, and will continue to see millions earn less than their parents. NYC will surely lose companies and people the longer it refuses to expand and improve its 100 year old system. The very system that allowed the city become what it is today. Problem is the city has reached the limits of its opportunities. Not building a second tunnel and using the one and only one it has from 1912 is insanity at its finest. Chris Christie killed the tunnel for political gain, then trump came along. And Christie’s past attack on a trump relative while he was AG caught up with him. Meanwhile the people of Nj and NY will continue to suffer. Long islanders though will soon benefit from a similar project that will bring Long Island trains under grand central for the first time.
