    I love Eisner's policy of open mindedness in the company. I mean he did let some bad projects through, but quite a few were really impressive. (think Euro Disneyland- now Disneyland Paris-, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Splash Mountain and others)

    I think the concept behind Mickey's Kitchen would work great, just do it as an actual place instead of stuffed away inside a store were no one is going to find it without going into the store itself. A lot of people are more concience about what they eat this days.
    Though in this day and age and how Disney makes use of wireless networks and media to get information out, location isn't really a problem. As long as people can find out its there and find where it is.

      It would totally work, but it would need theming that skewed toward the classier Disney eateries. Maybe even a new IP with a Disney tie-in. If you could bring some of the quality theming of Disney's best, then it would easily have a market. Naming health food after the characters is pretty much a non-starter, though. At least outside of a kids menu. The rise of fast casual leaves the market open for Disney, if they so desired. It might actually help start some trends if played right.

  • @Guernicaman
    @Guernicaman 6 лет назад +17

    If Disney can have success in cruise ships, then certainly a Mickey Mouse Hotel & a Mickey's Kitchen would be great ideas that could work. The problem would be figuring out how to better implement them. Mickey Mouse Hotels could be a series of all-inclusive-style Disney-branded hotels where families can spend time together, joining in different family-friendly activities, depending on where these hotels were. A Disney Hotel next to the Grand Canyon could offer tours w/cast members, for instance. Disney Restaurants (not fast food, but actual sit-down restaurants) should just offer Disney-themed breakfast, lunch & dinner dishes. While there should always be a set menu of a handful of items, the menu could change w/new dishes related to their latest properties. Maybe there could be a Star Wars themed plate, a Pixar or Disney animated plate or a Superhero, Marvel Studios plate. The restaurants' waiters, waitresses, hosts & hostesses could be in costume & play characters from the films. Think The Magic Time Machine chain of restaurants. Imagine the Mad Hatter taking your order!

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 6 лет назад +1

      Guernicaman Those are sad mediocre watered down versions that will be really disappointing. Slapping a Disney icon on an average product is the hallmark of bad brand management, as it ultimately devalues the brand. The products that are remembered and carry the brand forward are properly unique ideas like the classic Mickey Mouse alarm clock, not a regular clock with Mickey drawn on the clock face.

    I can see why they couldn't build the Mickey Mouse Hotel during Eisner's reign as CEO due to the lack of technology and architecture per say (the elevator up the leg), but I feel that now it is possible and it would be something very cool to have built on Disney property. Even if there isn't necessarily technology for it right now, Imagineers are extremely intelligent and I'm sure there's a way they could think of something in order to make it work!

    Yeah, marrying Mickey and Minnie was a bad idea. For one simple reason; it would imply the characters _age_. In all of cartooning, that's nearly unheard of (it's been done in a few comic strips, but in general it's a topic to be avoided). And considering Mickey has been around for 90 years, it would be even worse.

    • @c0mpu73rguy
      @c0mpu73rguy 5 лет назад +8

      How is that a problem? Disney could just make it so that from that point, these two characters will always be considered married. They don’t have to keep aging after that. Heck, not only did Goofy got married, but he also became a father and last time we saw his son, he was in college, and Goofy was still the same character we knew and love.

Aside from the normal Halloween and Christmas events, it would be nice to have something special, for, say, an anniversary (that could double as the Mouse couple's anniversary as well). People might think it's weird or "extra" but I guarantee that when the event actually happens, Disney fans will be clamoring to get a piece of the wedding cake anyway.

    I think the Mickey Mouse hotel would be a pivotal direction in accommodations that the company provides, and I think it would fit better in Walt Disney World. That being said, I think the hotel would be shaped as the typical mouse head and ears...it would be like Spaceship Earth, but it would have two smaller spheres on either side of it to be a 3-dimensional Mickey head. Rooms would be placed on the main sphere as well as the smaller ones. The elevators wouldn't be a problem then! LOL!

      Yeah, the original idea for wdw was to be in Louisiana but our governor who was a crook at the time shut that down because he wanted money for his own personal reasons and Walt moved on to Florida because he wanted ALOT of money.

    Rob, somewhere in my “family video vault” I have several minutes of what is probably very rare and detailed footage of the Mickey’s Kitchen that was opened at the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL in the ‘90s. It was, as you said in your piece, connected to the Disney Store there. We took our three little kids there soon after it opened. If you’d like to see it, we can try to figure out a way to get it to you. Love your work!

    Having grown up with Disney in the Eisner era, he having gotten there only a couple of years after we moved to Florida, I've always been defensive of him. There were things I didn't like but I loved his trying to emulate some of the things that Walt represented and the child like joy, he put into talking about them. For some reason, we always called him Mikey.

    Anyone know if Disney has ever considered opening up what one may call, a Magic Kingdom Classic park? Okay, the name needs some fixing, but what I mean is either a Magic Kingdom add-on, or another park all together that's filled with classic rides? I'm guessing that kind of an idea never got off the drawing board, and I'm not even sure it would pay off for shareholders. Disney's good at creating nostalgia, but here lately they don't seem to mind sending the classics to the boneyard. But I'm probably one of the few people who wish they keep the old stuff around too! I'm probably just showing my age. Seems like it would be great for small kids.

    A friend of mine who was head of Park Entertainment at DisneyWorld during Eisner's era said that they were once brainstorming ideas about how to celebrate the turn of the century at the Disney parks (1999-2000). He said that in the meeting, Eisner floated the idea of partnering with NASA, and sending satellites into orbit packed with high-caliber fireworks. Then, at the stroke of midnight in each of the 24 main time zones on 1/1/2001, the satellites would unleash their payload, creating the largest Mickey-shaped fireworks displays ever, and at atmosphere, would be seen by a majority of the earth's population. The idea apparently gained legs for a few weeks, until someone did some research about the national security implications and they shelved the idea. Crazy!!

    There was an idea to build an full scale aircraft carrier that would be fully functional. This was originally thought that they could purchase a retired unit from the military and place it at then MGM to be used by filmmakers and the military.

    Awesome as always Rob! I replied to another poster about Eisner and Iger, but it made me wonder, what other CEO’s have existed at the Walt Disney Company? Was it Walt until he died? Did Walt even officially hold the title of CEO or was he just in control because he was Walt? Did Roy or a board of executives name the CEO successor to Walt? Also, do we know the most about Eisner and Iger because they are the most recent heads of the company or is it because they really have done the most for the company since Walt? I know that you have often mentioned the directionless era after Walt died and before Eisner where they were just trying to do what they think Walt would have done but I guess I’m curious about who was in charge at that time and why they were so directionless?

    This is a tricky question. I like all the ideas. Even the ones that didn't work. However, I like the idea of Disney cars, but as characters. I would drive a character themed car. My favorite idea would be The Mickey Mouse hotel, although instead of being in the shape of Mickey, it would be Mickey themed.

    I'd pay good money to attend Mickey and Minnie's wedding. Seems like a fun idea, and a good opportunity for synergy and a unique event that would draw people into the parks. There could be a meet and greet with Minnie in her dress and Mickey in his tux, which would be a unique and cool photo-op.

    Mickey Mouse Hotel seems great! Just not over a major highway. BUT the best idea was the year long celebration of Mickey & Minnies wedding.
    I get the adult concept after thought. But, it’s a neat year long thought for three of the parks.

    I like the idea of mickey's kitchen. They'd rack up some money since most people are health conscious now a days, not to mention, I wouldn't mind a healthier burger and fries. Or a good salad. Add to that, a different themed restaurant, people love posting their experiences on social media. It's a win win

    I would love to see a Mickey Mouse Hotel but instead in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head. It’s such an iconic shape that if you were to make a hotel based off of him, there would be one thing that came to mind when thinking of it which is the 3 circles that form his head.
