- Pontiac G6 Wiper Fix ,and other GM cars. The wipers stopped working on this Pontiac G6 GT one day while driving . You can hear the wiper motor running so it is prob something to do with the wiper transmission.,and not electrical. If you remove the wiper arms and plastic cowl on this Pontiac G6 you will be able to inspect and remove the wiper assembly. It is a possibility to just replace the bushing but could not find one listed for it so you would need to match it up at the store. All in all the wiper transmission replacement on a Pontiac G6 is not that hard to do.

I want to say thank you so much, I was able to determine that this crooked mechanic lied and pretended that he had changed the bushing out. The wipers worked 30 seconds, they went all the way down on top of the car and stopped. I took it back, he would not tell me when he opened it up, and took the wiper transmission linkage out, but told me that I needed a new one. With your video, I was able to remove the transmission part and look and there was nothing there. So, thank you so much, keep doing your videos, because as a woman, I never even considered diy for my car. Thank You. Very Clear, step by step to follow.
This is like the best auto repair video I've ever seen on RUclips. The video shots are clear, thorough and to the point on every detail without idle chit chat. Dorman part number 49452 is a replacement windshield wiper linkage bushing. The GM linkage assembly is 22711011.
Thanks 👍
Thank you for posting this. Clear and thorough directions as it should be. Take care
Glad it was helpful!
2 months ago when I did this fix to my wife's car, I was able to just replace the plastic bushings since they were available locally, BUT the bushings were a little too loose and the assembly came apart twice. Today I replaced the whole wiper transmission assembly. I now have a few more tips. 1. When you are putting the long plastic cowling back in place there are some clips that you need to make sure go under the bottom edge of the glass so there is a snug fit up against the glass. 2. If you replace the whole assembly, you need to make sure that the short arm that bolts on to the bottom of the motor is in a position that is aligned straight with the next arm when the motor is in the parked position. Otherwise when you start to use the wipers they will go down first and then not extend all the way to the top of the glass. The two arms should look like a clock at 6:00 not 6:10.
I never have found the proper size bushing . They work for a few times then come apart again . Be cheaper if could just find the bushings . Thanks for stopping in and commenting
Great video. I was able to get the dorman bushing (assortment) locally at Autozone for about $10. Be sure to get the rubber and foam hood-to-cowl seals back in their original position. They are important in keeping underhood gasses from entering the car. The HVAC system of the car draws fresh air through the cowl area where the wiper motor is installed. Thanks again!
Hey can you buy the rubber and foam hood-to-cowl seals, did not come with the bushing. Thanks for any help you can offer...
I bought the OEM transmission on Amazon for $58 going to do this when it get's here. Shop wanted $250, parts and labor. If this works you, sir, are saving me a lot of Money.
Mike Stoffers Thank you for watching and commenting . It is not a hard job so all should go well.
Such a perfect video. Honestly. I have been looking for a full replacement installation of a wiper transmission, and this is the only video that explained from top to bottom of how to install the replacement with detail. Thank you for the education.
My man!! Had the same exact problem and this was the perfect video. You sir deserve a nobel piece prize 👍🏼
Glad it helped!
Good video. I knew just what I was getting into before I started. The only challenge was getting the wiper arms to let go from where they were pressed onto the threaded shafts. Just keep working then back and forth.
I agree that is the hardest part
Looks like this Pontiac owner was having the same exact problem as I was having, thank you greatly for this video!
+The Guru Thank you for watching and commenting
Nice video. The wiper motor on my '07 Cobalt started failing and this was much more helpful than my Haynes manual.
+MathMarvel Thanks for watching and commenting , glad it helped
Thank you so much!! this helped me fix me '09 G6. I couldn't find the bushing local either, so I replaced the entire linkage. It was much easier than I expected. Couldn't have done it without you
Thanks , glad it helped
Had this same problem worked great THANKS... A quick help for me was I used a small puller to get the arms off. They where stuck real good.
+Alec Tractor Guy yea i also sometimes use a puller , thanks for watching and commenting
just got finished doing this on a G6...awesome video, really helped a lot and i'm sure saved me a lot of cash taking to a garage. I took it all apart and had the exact same issue you had. ALso, spent a day trying to track down the bushing but no luck. Ordered the transmission from amazon and got it in 2 days.
Thanks for taking the time to record and post!
777wanabe Glad you got it fixed , thanks for watching and commenting
Hey man this really saved my ass lol. I'm working with literally 0 car knowledge (I can switch a tire but who can't?), wouldn't have known back from front without this video. Thanks a ton man!
Glad it helped
great video i ended up doing the same thing and ended up finding the bushings at auto zone for 5 dollars
Thanks for watching and commenting
Thank you!!! You are very clear and thorough.
Thank you for stopping in and commenting . Hope the video helped
Terry, as usual, U made the job look easy... Good video, thanks for posting!
It is not a bad job to do . Thanks for watching
I did this, except replaced the entire wiper transmission with one from a wrecker. Only difference from you is having to unbolt directly from the motor (theres a very short arm that rotates, which is connected to the bushing you replaced) and my wipers were going backwards LOL Turns out when putting the motor and assembly/transmission back into the vehicle, you need to make sure you attach the small arm/bolt to the motor in a position that is running horizontal to the wipers, pointing towards the passenger side. When I installed it the first time, I had it pointing towards the drivers, and my wipers tried to wipe the hood getting caught in the cowl. Took me a while (and bought 2 wiper arms I didn't need to buy), but got it figured out, if anyone else has that problem just an FYI!
+Stephanie Mitchell Thanks for sharing
I have a 2008 g6 and it's impossible to find any bushings without buying the entire linkage. I tried the assortment of bushings that Jeff mentioned, but none of them fit. If anyone watching this is in the same boat as me, you're gonna have to throw down about $60, unless you're lucky enough to find one in scrapyard.
Great video. After following the instructions I was able to find out why my wipers weren't working without having to take it to the shop.
Thank you for watching and commenting . I know our local parts store had no listing , It can probably be found , but not bad idea on replacing the whole thing . at least you know they are all new and going to last.
Thanks. Exactly what i needed. Busted mine during a snowstorm. Lol
Glad I could help
Probably one of the best fix videos I've seen. Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Thankyou this video helped me immensely. I know barely anything about how to fix things on cars, but this video helped me big time.
I have bought bushings and put one in, I had a hell of a time with doing that. It lasted a little over a year before I ran into the same problem. I used the video again today after purchasing the wiper transmission and replacing the old one.
Advanced Auto has these bushings for about $5 in stock. Thanks for your video! Helped a lot with my 06 G6
All the ones at our advance were to loose and would pop off after some use . What part number did you find to work , so others can try
Thank you so much my man has been to busy to change mine and so makes me happy to see this.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Excellent how to Terry.
They seem easier to get to than the older units.
Yes pretty easy
Thank you for the video, wtbm123! I understand you needed the quickest fix, but I was able to replace just the bushing with part 49449 from Advance Auto Parts. $5.09 for a 2 pack. Required lots of heat and grease to press in by hand.
2007 Saturn Aura, by the way... pretty much the same car as the G6.
+Derrick Barnes I do not remember the part number , but tried one that looked the same , but would only weekly snap on to the socket. . Usually if the right one , it is like yours harder to install
Thanks I enjoy watching your videos, I guess I can't stay out of the garage, Have a good one and take care
Thanks for watching MrWillis
Well explained Terry.
Thanks
had to do this on my black nissan couldnt find the replacement bushing anywhere, luckily the angle it was helped made my with a wire loom grommet that held it in place, lucky we dont use them much this way, if i hat a dip real hard some timesit pop backof but not to easily lol
Cool . Wipers that work come in handy at times.
Thank you. That is exactly what i needed to know. Great video.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting
This just helped me out a lot, thanks!
Thank you for watching
Well done! Thanks for the info! Will let you know how it goes.
That's one way to make sure it won't rain on your trip. LOL Have a good one. Nice vid.
Thank you for watching and commenting. .
Very helpful... only thing is that the bushing on my 2004 Pontiac Grand Am was very hard to put on myself, may have to take it somewhere to be put on!
They do fit tight
The Dorman number for the bushings is 49447. Pretty much any parts store should be able to get them.
Also, For the 2007 Pontiac G6, 2.4 it is Dorman Part #: 49452 at Advanced Auto... I think this one was 3.9 engine so the part # could be different
Awesome video thanks man I was able to replace mine without any prior knowledge( of wiper transmission) only thing I wanted to ask and wasn't sure about was connecting the linkage with new bushing to the motor I felt like I pressed down pretty hard even used pliers but it looked like it was sitting kind of crooked, I didn't want to break it, it works now but the bushing being VERY slightly crooked, still in the back of my head bothering me tho, THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO seriously man you saved me at least 300$
You are a blessing
Thank you
GREAT VIDEO - IT WORKED PERFECTLY.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Thanks for sharing this. I have a 2007 Buick Lacrosse and my friend Rick is going to install the Dorman wiper transmission this Saturday. We also could not find the bushing on line. Paid $63.83 via Amazon prime for the wiper transmission with 2 day shipping
That is where i found this one too. . At least this way you will know all the bushings are new .
Your the man! Thanks bud! I subscribed and hit the bell! Thanks for your time and help! I drilled a hole through the cap and into the ball then I tapped it and ran a screw in with a washer and made it bottom out at the right spot so it stays tight! Works like a champ! lmao!
Glad you got it sorted out
This was a great video. Thank you very much.
nice video terry,i like how u explain things out,tc
Thanks for watching Rick.
Great video. Your channel reminds me very much of Spelunkerd's channel- sort of an all-around DIY channel with many different things besides cars! You and your viewers would like it I bet.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I have watched some of Spelunkerds ,and I do like . Wish I had the time to make some diagnostic videos but being a one man operation here ,days are long enough just getting customers cars done. Keep up your good videos i really like them.
Had the exact same issue on my 07' Pontiac G6 GTP. I was able to find replacement linkage bushings @ Autozone. Going to attempt to fix my wipers tomorrow b/c a new wiper trans cost about $100.
are they still working ok . all i found there was just a little big
Changed the bushing, but the arm continued to come loose. Both bushings on the arm were loose & worn. So I found a new transmission for $30 online & switched it out. Wipers work perfect now.
I bought the right kind of bushing that goes on the transmission arm but I have no idea how to get the old one off so I can replace it with a good one. Any ideas on this?
Cut , pry it off , They can be hard , Can you cut part of old bushing with hack saw to help if you can not pry it off
Great tutorial :-))
I bet it took 3 times longer because you had to film for us, thank you :-)
I would imagine those nylon cups have lasted a long time, your repair will possibly outlast the cars usefullness.
Ive not seen many cars have problems with the windsheild wiper drive, i do watch another youtuber that has a G6 and they have a lot of dodgy bits.
It does take at least twice the time and thinking about sayin everything important is not easy either. Thanks for watching , more g6 vids on the way
My wipers work fine they change the speeds but the switch is stuck and will not turn off. All I want to know is how to replace the control switch on the steering column.
Excellent job Sr
Thanks for watching and commenting
@wtbm123 im having a problem @3:01, my wiper isnt coming out as easy as yours, u got any tips?
They make a puller . but usually they are hard as kinda pulling on an angle , has to be pulled straight up and hard to do sometimes . a squirt of penetrating oil may help
I went step-by-step with your video and did it one windshield wiper works the other one don’t and they’re not a line how do I fix this problem?
Did you install a new wiper transmission . Is something binding up . I would look to see if everything is still attached . if something came apart , make sure the wiper it controls moves freely.
It took about an hour total time.Instructions are included for bushing installation
great video
Thank you Brian
2005 Cavalier passenger side wiper not working. took apart and it had a bad bushing. I went to autozone and got2 replacement bushings. I cant get the bushing into the arms hole. tried pushing, press and other things wont go in. any suggestions how to get it in?
This video was very well done and is similar to my 2005 Cavalier. I got the Bushings at Autozone. Pressing the bushing in was a real a pain. Autozones website says it a direct fit for my car, butt the hole was too small. And as someone else mentioned I had to ream out the hole to get it in. Finally Pressed it in with channel locks, connected and working ok. Dealer said they don't sell the bushing you have to buy he whole transmission. I checked Advance and Napa web sites an none of them list the bushing. Keep on posting these excellent repair videos, WTBM123
Thanks a ton! Your video really helped me a ton!
Thanks for watching and commenting
How do you get the bushings out instead of replacing the whole arm?
I went to turn my car on and I are the windshield wipers won't stop working I tried turning them off and it keeps going I don't know what to do can somebody help me
maybe park switch in wiper motor , relay , or maybe the on off control switch . May need some one to hook a diagnostic scanner to it and see if switch and things are working
ty & ? if my wipers stopped working in the down position after a heavy ice storm - would this be any different? The garage I got the 1st estimate from said that it couldn't free up the arms and gave me an estimate for 126 for 2 arms and 190 for the linkage. I'm in Canada
+susan c If the linkages came off , you should still hear the motor turn . most wiper transmissions here come as a assembly .
Bushing at O'Rielly's: "WIPER LINKAGE BUSHING ASSORTMENT" part# 49447
Thanks for posting a part number. None of our local stores carried it. We do not have many choices of parts stores here.
life saver
Have installed the bushing two weeks ago,and wipers are working okay.
My vehicle is a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT, 2 door, sorry did not mention in previous comments
my wipers stopped working recently and the mechanic said i need the motor replaced. its just 1 motor that runs both blades, right? and is it that hard to replace on my own as long as i have the tools? (i have a 2010 pontiac g6)
one motor . it is shown in video. i had to remove it from old wiper transmission in video and put on the new one
So I think am going to buy me a socket set ASAP thanks for the video am about to fix my own and save me $120 bucks
It is not that hard to do . Getting the wiper arms off is the hardest part of the job i think . Hope you get it sorted out and have wipers again .
@@wtbm123 I fixed them took me an hour cause I dropped the bolt 😂 but got it fixed thanks
thank you....
Thanks for watching
you do some great fixing vid bro
Thanks
so I hear the motor running, but they don't move on their own. do I have to replace the motor or just put the wipers back on track???
Prob the wiper transmission
nice fix....funny how you can go for yrs n yrs then all of a sudden have wiper problems. i must be lucky haven't had wiper problems since the 90's. headlights too....lol
Thanks for watching
good one Terry
Thanks Tom
Good Job
Anyone else having a problem removing the wiper off that post? It's like they're fused together and I've pulled on it so hard my back is starting to hurt and I think its going to break something else underneath
edit: OK folks unless you have fingers made of steel you're going to need a puller tool like this one: www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-4-Ton-2-Jaw-Puller-HGP424/205738372
Yes, I was about to give up but I kept pulling up and then pushing down till it started to wiggle just a little bit. Then I took my channel locks with one jaw on the bottom of the arm and the other on the end of the threaded shaft; squeezed and it came off. My 60 year old hands aren't as strong as they used to be.
got bushings ordered for my 04 grand am....$9...hope they fit...old ones cracked from age
my wiper blades keep stopping in an "up" position and won't return to the park position, any ideas?
+Derek Peterson On some there is a tab on back of wiper motor that bends , I sure if one Googles it they can find a picture of it . That would be my first thing i would look at .
+wtbm123. Rookie mistake by me. I did not reset the motor to the park position before putting the linkage onto the motor and installing.
+Derek Peterson I didn't reset the motor and haven't had any problems yet, will this cause future problems from not doing this?
good video, thanks
my wipers constantly move up and down immediately i start the engine...yet i have not moved the position of the wiper ...how do i solve this issue
Sounds like something is not letting it park or some reason it is always switched on .
so how do i solve it pls...something like what...i drove it to an open park, hunged around for 10mins only to start my engine and wipers start to move up and down
You would need to check the wiper motor to see if it is going in to park mode and if so does the power go through the switch when t is supposed to and shut off when shut off .
can i do that myself or needs an expert
U all over it Terry! CJ
Thanks
Thank you for the great video, I did change the bushing but it pop out again (2x). I'm wondering if I should buy the whole wiper linkage, I did find a clip that goes over the bushing; what do you suggest. I don't want to take it to a mechanic and pay the "pink tax" I have taken apart 2x that was pretty easy.
I change the whole wiper transmission on these , I have never found the correct bushing , Found and tried some that looked close , but was not tight enough to stay on .
Thank you, nice video
Thank you for watching and commenting
This is exactly what my G6 is doing.
Thanks for stopping by
Great video
Thanks
good detail
Thanks
I you have this issue with our 2015 Equinox, the 2013s were recalled. The NHTSA is looking
into this problem. If you have this issue, please file a complaint to
force GM to recall. @t I bought a new unit from Amazon for $70.
Thank you for commenting
I actually found and bought a pack of the bushings at advance auto parts. Only problem is that the arm keeps falling back off.
+Jason Lattimer If i remember right , they have some that look close , but for a Nissan maybe ?. They look the same , but the inside that fits over the ball is different size and they snap on over the ball , but not tight enough to stay on . The actual one snaps on the ball pretty hard
Oh, that explains why the new one keeps popping off. I think I will try to get the whole assembly like you did. Thank you for posting.
nice video! i lost the nut with the lock washer on it, i cant figure out the size, isn't listed anywhere on the internet
The car is no longer here , and i do not remember the size , sorry
Good job
Thanks
good one........tony
Thanks
Good how to Terry.
Thanks
❤❤❤❤
Hi wtbm123,
Thanks for the great video, I am wondering if this job will be similar on a 2007 pontiac torrent
Thanks,
Bri
Should be close to the same
Purchased a bushing assortment (49447)at Advance Auto Parts for $3.99 plus tax
Have u installed , if so let us know how they worked out . It may help others to know how they done
Thanks
I replaced the bushing twice and it still comes off :(
I had same issue with all the bushings i tried . some are close , but never could find the right size one . That is why i just bought the whole transmission .
wtbm123 I bought the transmission tonight hopefully this will fix it finally.
Anyone know a trick to get the wipers off the transmission? Mine are very rusted
Penetrating oil , and maybe a little puller
thanks
Thank You
Kool
Thanks
save some money thanks homie
Thanks for watching
I can not get my wipers arms off, I have an 08 G5. I'm assuming they are the same but I can not get them off. Ideas?!
Take the nut off , and pull from the end on the shaft . Pulling on arm will bind it up . May pull up and lightly hit shaft with small hammer . But not to hard do not want to mushroom the end . Or get a puller for them
