    It's easier to break the jam nut free while the outer tie rod end is still in the knuckel.

      You should. Jobs like this are really easy but way overcharged at the shop. Shop wanted 600 bucks for tie rods I said no thanks I'll do it myself.

  • @joesmith-fi1sx
    @joesmith-fi1sx 2 года назад +1

    also. if the alignment shop needs to mive the tie rod end after it will kind of screw up tye new bolt on the end wont it since it has the nylon locking. that sucks. i need to get mine aligned after. hard to say how the steering now feels with new inner and outer. it feels like its over steering around town or something like that. hopefully the alignment makes it great ! thanks for the video

      They don't typically pull it out of the socket. They'll loosen the lock nut and twist the inner tie rod to adjust

      @joesmith-fi1sx 2 года назад +1

      @@AGuyandHisProjects Oh wow I never thought of it like that you could spend that inner tie rod and then adjust the nut I guess that is awesome I have heard from people that you didn't need to now I understand how thank you

      @@joesmith-fi1sx no problem! I once wondered as well so I get it. I used to think the same thing that they would pull the tie rod out again. The more you work on them the more you figure out :)

    Was their inner tie rod making any rattling noise being that loose?

    • @AGuyandHisProjects

      If it was the rest of the truck made more! ;) as cheap as the inners are, I always like to replace them with the outers, hardly any additional work or cost

      @@AGuyandHisProjects thats what i was thinking. makes sense to flip them if its lifted. i have a 2 inch lift so even seems to make sense for mine

    • @michellemorrison5841
      @michellemorrison5841 Год назад +1

      It's due to the over factory lift on the front end, usually on 2004 to 2008 f150s you can use all factory installed components with 2in to 2.5 inch leveling kit or lift, after that it creates too much bind on tie rods and upper and lower control arms ball joints, this is a typical quick fix to just put tie rod ends over top instead of underneath to decrease the angle and bind, also I know this was a typical prevention method to keep tie rod ends from falling out completely if worn badly, it saves from losing entire steering control for a few extra moments which could mean the difference between total damage and or loss of life...

    How do you know if the inner tie rod is bad? What are the symptoms?

    • @AGuyandHisProjects
      @AGuyandHisProjects  2 года назад +1

      There can be several symptoms. In my personal opinion it is worth replacing them with the outer tie rods regardless. Sometimes you'll hear them squeal on turns, can have loose feeling steering, and/or they can contribute to bad tire wear

    • @906lane
      @906lane 2 года назад +1

      @@AGuyandHisProjects Thank you. My steering wheel fills loose over bumps at times. I also hear a clicking when tuning sometimes. I changed everything on the front end. Upper, lower control arms, new rotors, brake pads, new struts, sway bar links, sway bar bushing, outer tie rods, steering shaft. The inner seem fine and tight, but I guess I should have changed them out too.

    I have a 2008 ford F150. I rented that same tool. It has no 1 5/8" adapter. It doesn't work for f 150s. Gun shy about using the pipe wrench.
