Thank you, Ben. I have seen another much more complicated gesso preparation for a smooth, paper-like finish, but yours looks much simpler. so, I shall try yours. Ha, ha.
Thanks for watching! If the stretched canvas has been primed it's not essential to do this process. I just like to do it as it pulls the canvas tight and makes the paint flow so much better. It's beneficial to rub it back to get rid of any lumps and bumps if a totally smooth surface is required. If it's an abstract with heaps of texture I wouldn't be too concerned with a few bumps.
@@BenHeffernanArt I hear you. Thank you.
Thank you for this. I've taken up painting, I would like to try this pretty soon. Does it only work on large canvases?
This process is equally good for all size canvasses. Make sure you Gesso the canvas even if it says its pre-gessoed. Give your canvas at least two or three coats of Gesso
Hey Donna. That's fantastic that you've taken up painting! Yes this will work on all stretched canvas and canvas board no matter the size. For me it's great to pull out any imperfections that may have occurred through handling as I said it will make the canvas tight as a drum. Plus it gives me assurance that the canvas is completely sealed. Thanks again for watching and commenting and happy painting!
@@attadudepc Great point! Especially if its raw canvas. At least minimum of 3 coats thanks for commenting.
Waste of time.
@@karlabritfeld7104 Oh really. Hey thanks for watching at least. 👍🤓
Why do you need the gesso? One you have a few layers of acrylic paint on, will that not do the same thing? 🤔
Gesso seals the fabric canvas so the paint doesn’t absorb into it leaving a patchy surface. You can also sand down earlier coats of gesso to help fill in the weave so your surface is smoother.
Hey great question. Most stretched canvas come with a few coats of gesso already but I still like to paint at least one coat myself. This pulls the canvas really tight and gives me assurance that the canvas is completely sealed. Gesso dries hard and gives a slightly textured surface making it easy to paint on. No a few coats of Acrylic paint won't seal the canvas. Happy painting 👍🤓
@@BenHeffernanArt interesting I did not know this. I was trusting the triple gessoed canvas I was buying. I should really be doing this myself. Thanks for the video.
