Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”) directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
The film stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name,” “Little Women”), Rebecca Ferguson (“Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep,” “Mission: Impossible - Fallout”), Oscar Isaac (the “Star Wars” franchise) Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “Avengers: Infinity War”), Stellan Skarsgård (HBO’s “Chernobyl,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “Avengers: Endgame”), Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird”), Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” HBO’s “Euphoria”), Chang Chen (“Mr. Long,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), David Dastmalchian (“Blade Runner 2049,” “The Dark Knight”), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Netflix’s “Sex Education”), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years,” “Assassin’s Creed”), with Jason Momoa (“Aquaman,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”).
Villeneuve directed “Dune” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth based on the novel of the same name written by Frank Herbert. Villeneuve also produced the film with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Joe Caracciolo, Jr. The executive producers are Tanya Lapointe, Joshua Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert.
Behind the scenes, Villeneuve reteamed with two-time Oscar-nominated production designer Patrice Vermette (“Arrival,” “Sicario,” “The Young Victoria”), two-time Oscar-nominated editor Joe Walker (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival,” “12 Years a Slave”), two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (“First Man,” “Blade Runner 2049”), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (“Blade Runner 2049”). He also collaborated for the first time with Oscar-nominated director of photography Greig Fraser (“Lion,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”); three-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West (“The Revenant,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Quills”) and co-costume designer Bob Morgan; and stunt coordinator Tom Struthers (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception”). Oscar-winning and multiple Oscar-nominated composer Hans Zimmer (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Inception,” “Gladiator,” “The Lion King”) is creating the score.

Did anyone else notice how the transitions between scenes in these 10 minutes are really well done? As soon as a subject is spoken of Denis shows them, and the subject is always related to the previous one. Paul thinks about Chani - Fremen - Spice - Imperium and guild - Herald of the change. Such a smart move to make when adapting a rich story like Dune.
I was thinking just this. Excellent storytelling.
As someone with zero knowledge of the Dune franchise, the exposition is masterful throughout the film. The only flaw is that characters have hushed voices, and I sometimes can't understand what they are saying.
Yep! It's an incredibly clever decision. He also relates scale shots of big ships to something either smaller or larger.
There's also the absolutely crucial and probably most important connection: Chani wonders "who our next oppressors be?", and then we cut to Paul.
@@FallenOne669 good to hear. It’s a VERY dense story to try and adapt
I love the small subtle details here
"Who will our next opressor be?" And the next scene shows Paul
1:18 That shot has to be one of my favourites in any film, it looks like something straight out of concept art. Seeing that for the first time on the big screen made me instantly realize that this would be great.
When I saw that I knew Dune is getting handled by very good hands.
You’re right, I found the concept artists Instagram account with his designs and drawings, they look very similar
yeah it gave me confidence that this movie is gonna blow my mind
This art also occur in the DUNE board game though very beautiful art it is

I can watch this film a thousand times and not get bored
I feel like it didn’t convey a lot of emotions. It’s just eye candy, and there’s nothing that the characters feel that makes me want to watch this again. Generally gets boring after that fact. Plot is nothing special imo.
@@rampagez3453 the characters are exactly the same as in the book as well as the plot and the book is one of the best sci first books of all time
@@rampagez3453 Maybe there's more going on than you initially assume. Sorry, this ain't Star Wars.

Anyone ever notice how the music mimics a heartbeat increasing in speed? Really helps the tension of this opening especially when you see it in IMAX.
Someone set off a thumper?
@@NubaNarmer I knew I was in for a great movie when I realized I was hearing a thumper in the first 60 seconds of it.
I thought it was to mimic the thumper...
@@noahlol1638 a thumper doesn’t increase in speed it stays the same rhythmic beat.
@@oheldenring6937 I see
Seeing this in IMAX was probably the most perfect experience I’ve ever had in a theater. The crowd was dead silent. You could tell that the entire audience was laser-focused on the film because of how unbelievably outstanding the sound design, score, and visuals were for this film, and how seeing it in the IMAX format made it a practically spiritual experience. When I watched it for the second time on HBO max, I cranked my soundbar volume all the way up and turned all the lights off. I just can’t watch this movie without the maximum settings of whatever it’s being displayed on. I love this movie so much.
Starting the film with the message about dreams before the studio logos come up is such a flex
Watching this in IMAX was like a psychedelic experience. The film grips you and doesn't let go, from the very first second with its message of dreams all the way to the end. It drags you into deep, dark places without the refuge of lightness typical in Hollywood films. I felt like I left my body and when the movie ended I came back and had a hard time processing my feelings and what it meant, but I knew it was deep and profound. It was also, of course, incredibly imaginative and beautiful visually.
Theres a lot of predictive programming in this film it was the same with bat man
Makes sense it was like a psychedelic experience, Frank Herbert was a big user of mushrooms and he hung out with the pioneering psychonauts of the 60's. His experiences heavily influenced the Dune universe.
@@dannymack9636 like what? It’s an adaptation of a book. Frank Herbert wrote it to be somewhat of a prediction but idk.
After seeing this at the cinema, watching this opening here has let me appreciate a lot more of the details. Stuff like the fact the Emperor's herald has a ship shaped like the glowglobes they use for light just seems to be a nice little insight as to how they see themselves, and that closeup of Leto's ring as a badge of office is a good way of letting us know its importance without beating us around the head with dialogue.
Exactly! “Show not tell.” A big thing in writing.
The beginning ambush absolutely insane cinematography, sound design, music everything
it does such a good job of establishing the basics of the story and setting the mood
I paid 15$ for a movie ticket then went home and paid 15$ to see it again on HBO. I've seen it five times, now I'm broke. It was worth it.
The way the film is introduced by Hans Zimmer’s radical sound design... puts you in another world instantly.
I'm not a science fiction fan and I had no plans to watch it, but I'm glad I did because it really is one of the best films I've seen
Science fiction for the sake of it is only for fans of the genre but when it is a good film it really makes it a different experience.
Denis Villeneuve made arrival and bladerunner 2049, both are pretty good science fiction films.
Wait until you watch part 2. If Denis maintains this level of quality, and remains very close to the books, it will be fantastic.
@@bighands69 most science fiction these days is character driven. Imo that’s what makes Dune special: it’s driven by interesting sci-fi ideas and “what-ifs”
LESAN AL GEYIB is the MAHDI the true descendent of prophet Muhammad pbuh
and this movie is a pagan and satanic way to insult Muslims and the true Savior of humankind
this is not just science fiction , this is satanic Hollywood trying to mock Muslims for believing in MAHDI
I’ve seen this movie four times and that intro still gives me goosebumps every time. Best movie experience I’ve had in a while.
Yeah since blade runner
Agreed 👍🏾
Same here.
I’ve seen it 9 times… and every time I enjoy it so much… a masterpiece ¡
How could you sit through such a boring emotionless piece of movie
Only 10 minutes and I already swore my allegiance to a fictional house
This is the film I've been waiting for for 40 years. A real real immersion and not images that move. Everything is really huge and you can feel it. The cast is excellent.

last time the first 10 minutes of a movie impressed me like this was mad max fury road and the dark knight
I will never forget that first time I heard the drum in the beginning when the logo popped up. It shook me to my core and was the moment I knew it was gonna be a amazing.
Dune is not just another film in theater for me it is the highest spiritual dimension I've ever known. It blew my mind into infinite pieces.
"Who will our next oppressors be?"

That's probably my highpoint of the entire opening. Sublime.
BRUH FR
My favorite film of 2021. I'd love to see it win the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director.
@Juani DC You're saying that as if this film isn't top notch in every one of those compartments.
@Juani DC Oh, I read that as if you were intending to have a comma between "No way" and "it's not winning". My bad.
@Juani DC Not logically, no. But needless to say, I've heard of a few instances where the academy has given awards to titles who don't deserve them and vice versa. Maybe that's not an issue in those compartments though, I'm not sure. I don't watch the reward shows.
No Academy don't like SF films in Best Picture category
It deserves being recognised as the amazing movie it is, but I personally do not consider the academy qualified to recognise this movie, or any other.
In case anyone is still somehow wondering the scale, yes the Imperial signatory craft, that big semi-sphere lander @7:00, is that little dot that emerges from the Heighliner @6:43. Heighliners are approximately 25 km, or 15 miles, long.
This movie had the biggest and most impactful opening ever since Mad Max Fury Road. The sheer chills induced by the VFX and SFX are unparalleled!
And now it's tied with Fury Road as the 2nd most rewarded Science Fiction movie when it comes to receiving Oscars
I just watched the latest Bond film - I reckon Hans Zimmer probably did that movie in his spare time, just bread and butter work.
Not like this one....you can tell he put his heart and soul into it. Goosebumps.
ahahahh hans zimmer is that good he makes an entire bond film "in his spare time" 😂
@@saradesjardins7403 well, he reused a lot of music from the dark knight and other movies for bond. In dune, it’s all original
That whole movie sucked. Some really bad acting, plot points, and all around weird scenes. And he's my favorite Bond too. Just....bad
I love how the technology is advanced and yet the culture is so ancient
An eargasm and an eyegasm.
And a mindgasm!
9:10 that Atreides chant is just amazing
I haven't seen a movie setup the stage for a cinematic experience like this in a long time. Such a masterpiece film.
Ahem every borefest is a masterpiece nowdays....

"When is a gift not a gift?" - the Baron
Any dealer will tell you "The first hit is free...you want more, you gotta pay!"
It's a win-win situation for both sides
This is the best naked exposition opening since The Lord of the Rings.
Exactly! Usually when scifi/fantasy movies open with one big narrated exposition dump its almost always terrible and boring but lotr and dune knew precisely what needed to be said then and what could be kept hidden for later on, kept it short and had amazing visuals. Truly stunning can't wait for part two!
@@deathless_freak don't forget the soundtrack. The narration keeps it simple and straight to the point. Some films drag on for far too long
Literally nothing will ever come close to seeing this film for the first time in IMAX! The opening gave me goosebumps and the ending left me craving for more after sitting for 2.5 hours. I didnt want this movie to end at all.
I remember sitting outside the cinema in dc finishing dinner, saw that there was a new movie called Dune out and was labelled a sci fi movie. Decided to try it, went and sat in the movie theater and was BLOWN AWAY. This movie is what made me start reading the book, what an epic cinema experience :)
Best Movie of 2021
This is one of those films you have to watch on the big screen. Having dolby surround the shakes your chair and thus you too is also an added bonus.
Every film is better on the big screen.
And quite frankly, the film is still fantastic to watch on the small.
Villeneuve is the Kwisatz Haderach of science fiction.
Going through the comments, I fear a lot of viewers did not get the experience they could have had. The audio in this movie is so much more than what a simple sound bar or TV speakers can provide. If you saw it in theater, well then you have to applaud the sound engineers for a master piece. The director of Dune also directed Blade Runner 2049 and I did not know that when I first watched Dune. In fact, I said to myself "This gives me Blade Runner 2049" vibes" and had to go look it up. Its not all the time we get a movie that not only looks great, but sounds even greater. The audio is what draws you in and makes you feel a part of the movie. VERY well done.
Seeing this in IMAX was something else entirely.
I love the cinematography in this film so much, you can pause this film at nearly any moment and it looks like a masterful painting
One detail I didn't notice is that at 5:05 you can hear The Reverend Mother's voice. The Voice is meant to sound to each listener like the voice of the person they're most intimidated by. To Lady Jessica, that person is Gaius Helen Mohiam. Consequently, that's who we hear.
Great opening 10 mins.
The opening scene is masterfully filmed
2:55 Kubrick vibes
Seeing this on a huge IMAX screen with the towering aspect ratio was one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had.
I love Dune so much
the little exposition scene with the holographic display of Arrakis is such a cool little detail for me in this scene.
It's called a filmbook in the world of Dune. Computers were practically outlawed after an uprising against AI in the past so now they only have highly developed analogue technology, or very rudimentary computers.
6:47 This was the first shot (of many) that completly engulfed me with the scale of this sci fi masterpiece. I'm shocked that it still works even on a phone screen
9:22 my favorite shot from this scene, something about the candle wax dropping on the paper while the Atreides chant is in the background whilst Hans’ score plays is just hypnotic
6:54 but like this shot of Paul looking up is just gorgeous
I’ve seen the movie four times: twice IMAX, twice standard, although I would’ve seen it all in IMAX had I been able to, and just reading everyone’s comments about it gives me goosebumps…
4 times in Theatre ! Masterpiece
4 times for me as well! I went in my first viewing knowing nothing about the source material, but now I’ve become obsessed
@@RShadow12 I was broke so had to watch on laptop lol
Me too 😂
I only saw it 3 times
In ten minutes, I’m already swept up in the story even though I’ve read the series many times. I love the lack of exposition in the film. The story is moving right along. Smart move when your dealing with such a large story. I’m sure there will be a few more details in the next film.
We need the mentats explained and Paul's training as a mentat. We need Feyth Rautha, which is confirmed already. The one scene I'm worried about is Jessica's initiation. I don't know how they'll be able to do that well, including how it affects Alia. Well, I have the same worry about Paul's "coma".
@@abstractnonsense3253 i have the same worries, because they went over relevant details in the first part. Still, i trust denis!
@@abstractnonsense3253
What about Paul's coma? I can imagine it being a fantastic sequence with parallels to the resurrection of Jesus.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 I mean the visions, the inner experiences of Paul and Jessica during the "coma" and her initiation. The movie was extraordinary but that was one of the few things I thought was not good enough in the film. Denis can do better than that and I hope he does.
@@abstractnonsense3253
Well I think part 2 is the place those visions will actually happen on a grand scale and that's the reason we didn't see them in part 1. The spice agony and water of life are completely different beasts to sniffing spice in a tent.
I agree it's a shame that we didn't get a taste of it in part 1 in the couple spots we could have. But since part 2 will feature many scenes where it's absolutely pivotal to the entire narrative I hope we get some thoughtful visuals that build on things like the storm vision which I think had some nice sand imagery with the eyelash lense flares.
I'm excited for it because the combination of image and sound can do wonders and they have the opportunity to go absolutely bonkers with it, and furthermore they have the talent that can accomplish those wonders.
In the theater I was so nervous for this movie, the momment I see, heard and feel that "Dreams" tittle card I just relax in my sit and think "Im here for a ride boy"
Same. I was immediately comfortable that it was gonna be something special
3:00 this shot is mesmerizing
One of the best cinematic experiences ever! So glad I watched it on the theatre
As a huge Dune fan I’ve expected a lot from this film. But it exceeded my expectations many times. The cinematic masterpiece!
Everyone's talking about the ceremony or the Harkonnens leaving Arrakis, but I just LOVE the intro of Caladan at 3:39. The soft melody and the distant thunder is so pretty.
This is what happens when a director truly cares about the material. I don't necessarily dislike David Lynch's _Dune_ (except for every appearance of the Harkonnens), but, even without the 35 year disparity in special effects, this film is far better. The difference is love.
the difference is studio interference
And yet Oscars say that THIS movie lost to Coda for best picture? That is horseshit.
Coda was OKAY as a film, but to suggest Coda is in any way better than the ultimate film adaptation of Dune just seems wrong.
@@fernhausluv44 CODA was a terrible film. Dune was the best film of 2021
@@OscarMPG1 Perhaps mediocre, but I don't think terrible. Dune was one of the best of 21' though, yes.
Right after that chant I audibly said “okay, I’m sold”
This movie was great because nobody were screaming like the superbowls unlike marvel movies.
Marvel movies bore me
6:36 okay this sequence of shots blows my mind. The frigate is tiny compared to the maw of the Heighliner, but when it lands you find that it's actually as big as a skyscraper. I'm trying to guess how big that makes the Heighliner and I'm guessing it's _at least_ a hundred km long. Jesus.
3:00 That shot (By accident or intentional) gives off a great tribute to old Sci Fi cinematography like 2001 or Alien....just love that shot!
Denis Villeneuve is very angry you're watching this on your laptop and not in IMAX!
I’ll never get bored of this film
i cannot stress enough how glad i am i saw this in imax as many times as i could
I love this movie. Up there with Blade Runner as a masterpiece.
I love the music around 5:40. Perfection.
Should we just give Hans Zimmer the Oscar now? I mean, seriously?
Denis deserved it too
“Dreams are messages from the deep.”
I've seen it several times and love it. My 1979 reprint paperbacks have been dusted off also. Here we go again.
I just love how we see a what looks like a tiny ball come out of this massive Guild Ship, then on Caladan, this tiny little insect is revealed to be taller than a mountain. This movie creates scale like nothing else in the world.
The more Dune books I read, the more appreciation I have for how fcking epic this movie is.
