How Good Was John Cena’s US Title Run? (2015)

- The United States championship is a title which has had its ups and downs. Currently there isn't too much hype around it and it's not really seen as a workhorse title or something you get particularly excited about. This wasn't the case in 2015 tho. After winning the United States title at WrestleMania 31, John Cena elevated the US title and made it feel important each week. Sometimes up to par or greater than the WWE title at the time. His United States open challenge was unpredictable and the run was probably one of Cena's best character/ in ring work ever. In this video I rewind to 2015 and take a look back at who I believe is the last great United States champion.

It is 100% factual that John Cena was the last great U.S. Champion. I don't think his title run can be compared to anyone else's.
Seth
I actually liked r truths reign in 2019, he had funny segments, decent matches and HE ACTUALLY DEFENDED IT!!!! I just wish it lasted longer.
@@jamesharden6237 hell no
@@adityabute2107 ikr smh

John Cena's United States title run made me feel like the United States title was a bigger deal than the WWE title I loved the run even though at times I wanted to see somebody else with the title and then when it actually happened I just wanted John with the title again

King Otis because they treated seth like a mid career who sucks holding the title. He got killed every match only for him to get bailed out by the authority or someone interrupting the match

As a ruthless agression kid it’s been a while since we saw a good US Champ .
I really enjoyed the miz as us champion back in the day
Dzz
Cena is a guy who can make any title which he is holding look more greater than the WWE championship itself.
And that's why he is the greatest and best United States Champion of all time.
Because Rollins was an awful champion
Now I wanna see him come back and win the IC Title
Will John Cena said once the tittle doesn't make the wrestler the wrestker makes the tittle.
No.
He was holding a middle class title but always be on a main event on Raw/smackdown, thats great!
Cena easily made the US title more valuable than the WWE title for that period of time. It still sucks that he was screwed out of not only the WWE title, but lost his US title at Summer Slam though. I either would’ve had John Cena win the match and then either drop the WWE title back to Rollins because he cheated or have Rollins beat Cena clean in the first place, both of which would’ve been better than what we got
John Cena was great in 2015 undoubtedly the best U.S title reign of all time
Never going to be matched IMO
Completely agree. I can't remember a single run that was half as good (i started around 2008-2009 so i don't know about older us champs)
Which means 2015 was a great year for John Cena
@@HeyMomonia there was a guy his name is chris benoit he was the greatest United states champion and he was ten times better wrestler than cena go look him up kiddo
@@nadirsanchez1675 No. His reign was good, but not as good as Cena's one
John Cena’s US title open challenges were one of the best weekly things going in WWE. All of the matches were entertaining and I liked it a lot. I don’t think there will ever be another US Champion like Cena. Great video
Definitely, so much genuine excitement was brought to these shows by Cena, some of his best in ring/ promo work of his career. & Thanks!
Yep
@@SuperkickStudios he truly is one of the best, if not THE best

Cena really brought out some new moves in his Open Challenges, especially that Springboard Stunner and the fact that he utilized the Hurricanrana despite his build
He first used the springboard stunner at WM 31 but the Code red flipping powerbomb move debuted in a u.s open challenge match if I remember correctly.
That's because at that time cena went to mid card and they were building roman as the new face of the company so cena expanded his move set coz he knows if he gets injured roman will be there just like austin rock also had a limited move set vince doesn't expand their move set coz he want the face of the company to appear on every show and not get injured in trying to do something out of the box.
The springboard stunner was a weak move.
@@Mittens5044 nobody argued that it was strong
Cena with the different moves almost every match was awesome
Watching this video, it made me think of the promo that Cena & Roman did in 2017 on Raw. Cena says “I was honored to defend the United States Title, at this point in my career. And use it not as a demotion, but as a beacon of opportunity for younger superstars”
That's the promo he was talking about at the end
Yep john cena definitely deserves that USA title belt on his WWE title belt collection
Easily the most people ever liked cena
Us 2000's kids loved him back in the day 🙄
SuperkickStudios lol I started watching weekly around November-December 2011 around when punk won the title. It was amazing. He’s easily the last great US champ. He made the title feel Legitimate, like a very big deal. Kinda like what Miz did with the IC title

John Cena put on 4 to 5 star classics EVERY SINGLE WEEK for MONTHS with that belt. That’s actually insane. What’s even more insane is that he would pin young talent on a weekly basis, and instead of burying them, made them look like main eventers. THAT is how you use your starpower for good in wrestling.
Cena learning new moves during this time like that rope stunner helped the match’s so much
This was his best run
The fact that he actually gave open challenges introducing new wrestlers it was amazing
This was one of Cena’s best championship runs, PERIOD.
Would love to see him give some value to the new IC title one day too.
If Cena wins the IC title, he will again make it relevant
Cesaro and Cena is a five star classic, one of the best matches I've ever seen.
I personally thought it was awesome. Crab had awesome matches from the likes of Sami Zayn, Neville, Ambrose, Ryder, Stardust, and a whole bunch of others. Cena may not have the most complex move set, but I can assure you, when a good match is needed I’m sure that Cena will always deliver. And that’s why I’m a fan of his for life.
*Cena
Nah let’s just call him Crab😂
Cena had his best wrestling matches during his era. Those Cesaro matches are the cream of the crop
yeah Crab had a good run XD
He carried the Great Khali of all people to decent matches.
It was one of the greatest United States Championship reign of all times...
Cena’s US Title run was incredible. He acted like the title actually MEANT something with his “this is a symbol of excellence” promos for his open challenges. It gave some great exposure to plenty of talent, and Cena was consistently in the best match on the card during this run.
The U.S. title open challenge storyline was severely UNDERATTED. I loved this concept because it never made sense how anyone holding a title could LOSE a match but still retain their title if the title wasn't "on the line." I think ANYTIME a title holder wrestles his title should be on the line. That's what made the U.S. title open challenge so great. The title was on the line EVERY week and EVERY time Cena wrestled. Thanks so much for uploading this video!
John cena is hands down the best WRESTLER in wwe history
It's tough to say ,and that's coming from a guy who vividly remembers buying his merchandise as a kid. But he for damn sure , is the greatest US Champion of all time
@@El_09-19 well he is not the greatest in ring performer like HBK hart styles etc. but he is definitely the most well known wrestler around the world along with the deadman.
To me the most important thing about this specific title run was the "the champ is here" tshirt it gave us. At the time I was at a new school and being a big introvert i had a hard time finding friends. One day a boy in my class wore this tshirt, I say that I really like this tshirt and we talked for a while. This is now 5 years ago and he´s my best friend now. And this would´t have happened if this tshirt didn´t gave me a topic to start a conversation. So thank you Cena
It’s no doubt Cena had a great reign with that title. It is also undisputed that he was the last great champion. He took something that wasn’t important to us, and turned it into the complete opposite. Even his fifth reign, which lasted a month mattered more than recent reigns. I am still campaigning for him to win the I.C. Title at least once. I believe he will do the title justice, much like he did with the U.S. Title.
Same. If Cena wins the IC title, he will again make it relevant.
Honestly the fact that ppl say cena can’t wrestle is disrespectful
2015 was one of the last great years for WWE. The post Mania hype was one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced as a fan. Good times
Yeah 2016 too
Nah 2015 wasn't that good. I mean it was goof but 2016 was much better. Smackdown was trash and usually a repeat of RAW. The B show
The only good thing about 2015 was Cena’s US title reign. 2016 was WWE’s last good year.
@@ChampagneGars yeah 2017 was a huge downgrade after wrestlemania and 2017 was the year were wwe crowd started to get quiet
@@ChampagneGars last year was good on the smackdown side tho
The US title honestly felt like the main event title when he held it

The last best Us champion
Cena used to give classic matches every week on raw
I absolutely loved this run. We got damn good matches week after week. 2015 was an underrated year in WWE imo.
This is Guy who created the movement of Open Challenge, This Guy is the reason we can see IC Title Open Challenge, US Title Open Challenge and also outside of the WWE we can watch TNT title open challenge as well; I remember there was a title name Impact Grand Championship in Impact in 2016, That title was also defended many times by following the theme of the Open Challenge
This was such a great, memorable time. Loved this title reign so much
I will never forget John Cena's reign. It really made more focused on the US title because of his great promos and matches. Nowadays, I can't really find that anymore.

Thank you! :)
It made random Raw matches at a PPV level.
He used it as a beacon of opportunities for other new dudes. And I'm gunna even say that he was one of the greatest US champs. 2015 wasn't too bad after all.
It was fun seeing Cena as U.S. Champion. Good times. :)
It makes sense why he is friends with most of those guys he faced. He worked so well together
Epic video and brought back flashbacks of this time for me! Would be a dope video if you compared cena’s 2015 US title run with his very first US title run
I loved Cena's US Championship Run so damn much in 2015. It's a good thing that you covered this in the video!
edit: I subscribed to you, yesterday and you damn sure need new subscribers. holy shit, you are highly underrated.
Do one with the Miz and his Intercontinental Title Run
If Cena could just return and do the same with the Universal champion because serious that championship is delivering storytelling matches not wrestling matches
He will return at wrestlemania but for what match I do not know
I dont even think he will go for a title at this rate anyways
He's getting older and is now becoming a movie star
John cenas first us title run back in the early 2000s when he first introduced the spinning u.s title belt was underrated and ppl seem to forget thats when he first introduced the concept of a spinning title.
What made this run great was that the US Title was being defended every week. Thats what a title should be, that what makes the title important and adds prestige to it.
bros happy about getting 300 views and he just hit a mil on this vid. youve gotten far man ❤
This is the greatest minor title run of my lifetime. It wasn’t full of huge storylines or anything; but the matches, man. It was simple, straight up...come down and get put down-or rise up.
And the fact that it was 15 time World Heavyweight champion John Cena who was doing it? But not just that, he was proud to hold it. He held it like it was the WWE championship. Absolutely Marvelous
Owens vs cena would be One of the best feuds of this decade , those ridiculously amazing matches , storyline , script everything was perfect kudos to cena and owens❤️
This might’ve been his best run ever. He put on so many great matches and the fact he introduced so many new stars.
Seriously, when that time I thought US title value more than world heavyweight, WWE championship. He's the man who can value up the title one and only period
Cena made the US title valuable back in '04. His fued with Booker T was one to remember. Not to mention his incident with Carlito.
Oh yes, a time where attempted murder is perfectly fine for WWE story-lines. Good times.
I’ll miss all those fantastic matches. Tuning in every week on Raw and seeing new talent just because John gave them opportunities. Good times!
They really were good times. So many of the matches have a great replay ability, like you watch em in 2020 and just think of how solid they all were.
Anyone gonna be watching the rumble next sunday? I'm kinda hyped for it ngl
Possibly. I really hope there’s fans though. Not too many, but just enough to get that pop going.
40-60 views ....this one got 155k!
Great work man!
Thought this was in reference to his US title reign before he won the WWE title for the first time. That was another memorable, good run
His 2004 reigns seemed like a rite of passage to see if he could carry the WWE title. He had insane crowd control as a mid-carder. Granted his in-ring skills left a bit to be desired, but he was one of the best on promos at the time and could hang with the best of them.
Perfect
to last minute details
Definitely felt like I was back in 2005-2007 where it felt like mid titles were on the same footing as the “main” titles
Thank God for Cena’s open challenges because it helped elevate the US title after it was virtually ignored.
I know I'm super late on this video, but it just came up for me. The quality here was superb and it's no wonder that you've grown so much since it came out. Great video here dude.
I like how R-Truth US open challenge was inspired by John Cena US open challenge since John Cena was R-Truth childhood hero lol.
Damn you made me remember of this amazing period. I really loved cena when he was a us champ and did open challenge every week.
You gotta give this man respect for giving great matches every week while pushing new stars while also giving the us championship prestige.
I have to force myself to remember who is the us champ in 2020. It's bobby lashley right? Who was champ before him? I can't even tell.
Randy orton the last of a dying breed
@@adityabute2107 man
@@adityabute2107 the thing is nobody in wwe or wrestling as a matter of fact is a star now except for roman reigns
That title run was more than just Cena rebuilding the image of U.S. title. It really forced those who claimed that Cena "couldn't wrestle" and "buried talent" to eat their words.
He could carry the Great Khali to watchable matches in 2007 so saying he can't wrestle by that point is a stretch even if he isn't on the level of the likes of Shawn Michaels, AJ Styles or Kurt Angle.
I havnt watched wwe for the last 4 ish years and I saw this and needed to watch this. An amazing run he had
John and Roman’s promo “battles” were obviously one-sided and the line that stood out to me was when he mentioned Roman taking the U.S. Title as a demotion. I remember thinking during Roman’s reign that the title was literally just on his shoulder. Great stuff from Cena, per usual.

Obviously made this comment before finishing the end of the video lol. Still goes to say that Cena’s promos during that Reigns feud were all-time great.
Man, you do a great job!
Great title run one of my personal favorites great video !
Not the biggest cena fan but his United States championship run was brilliant
Cesaro vs Cena was the first wrestling match I ever watched, got me hooked.
Excellent video
During that I literally feel to wake up in the morning and watch raw live just because of Cena's open challenge and Rollins heel run. For ambrose crazy Ness and also for bray and roman's feud which began at MITB 2015
In my opinion this is the only time the wwe United States championship felt prestigious it felt relevant and important with the John cena and rusev fued and then with the u.s open challenge it elevated the title but also made rusev look strong and showed John cena’s in ring work along with elevating the rest of the talent on the main roster and the next up and coming stars of nxt evaluating them as well
Cena really made the US Title more Prestigious!!❤️👍
From what I remember, this was a great run. He put over a lot of the guys who are at the top of the company right now.
John Cena made buried superstars have a chance at the U.S Title.
Legendary run. The US title hadnt felt as meaningful since MVP held it in 2007
This was the last time i truly cared about the wwe. i stopped watching completely after 2017 and from then until late July early August 2021 i didn’t care about wrestling. Aew brought me back. but as far as this is concerned, John Cena will forever be my favorite, since 2006. This was the GREATEST U.S. Title reign of all time. Thanks to Cena. Ruthless Agression for Life.
I just love him. I am a fan of John Cena from my childhood and watched his every match and his promo. I just loved his title reign. I miss him very much nowadays
To think if Daniel Bryan didnt have to retire, we were gonna have John Cena as the U.S Champion and Daniel Bryan as the Intercontinental Champion, it would’ve been awesome to have more of those guys who were normally in the main event, be the midcard title holders.
I really respect Cena for this. He had been on top for so many years, but he elevated WWEs upper Midcard with his reign.
Man 2015 is such a underrated yeat. Losta cool stuff
this is just ... awesome
Welcome back
I loved the open challenges it made it worth tuning in to watch RAW
Cena Made neville feel like a main eventer than the wwe ever did, the guy deserved to be wwe champion and cena showcased every bit of his talent, hope that he now wins the aew world championship
Cena's body movements might be weird but the guy definitely CAN wrestle .
I had fun watching it but it didn’t create a star in the end. Nobody remembers that Del Rio beat him clean
It was seriously a waste having him win it.
Thank you!
I loved it, I wish he had more runs like that especially with the intercontinental championship at some point
Awesome. Up there with the best matches of his career.
Wasn’t he the USA champion in 2005 I thought this video was for that tittle reign
He was in 03 04 and 05
The reason it was great was because it wasn't your typical "Oh I'm the champ now . Here I go to the next PPV" like Brock or Roman .

The run that changed my mind on Cena. I was there in July when he beat Cesaro on the main event of Raw. Crazy match

His match with dolph ziggler was amazing, was hoping you would mention ir
This was the run that actually made me a fan of Cena. He turned the workrate up.
This guy is SPITTING FACTS! My word!
The owens debut match was the last time I had any real reaction to a wwe match , absolutely brilliant from both of them
