OMG thank you for doing a segment on women's voices. I haven't found ANYONE covering this. I would love a whole video.
I can't get volume on my fry screams no matter what I do! I know this is a common problem with people who are misinformed and think a fry scream comes from a loud vocal fry, but I know that's not what I'm doing. Any tips? I'm close to giving up! I think I do have the basic fry scream correct, but the volume just won't materialize. I don't want to be stuck in a whisper scream forever. I've tried some of the things you've demonstrated here and in other videos, but I'm still stuck.
If this has any bearing on the matter, I'm a mezzo soprano, but have a pretty big range. I have a lot of traditional singing training.

Thank you ALLOT for making these videos! It helps ALLOT! One thing I’m wondering about is that when I try to do FAST PHASE SONGS with screaming, example some stuff when the vocalist are screaming REALLY FAST and with MUCH WORDING (example some Psyclon Nine and Lorna Shore-stuff) I tend to run out of air and i kinda “run on less to no air at the end”, what should I doo?
Also, I don’t know…but I also expected the screams to “Feel Different” like that they were to be based in a “different part of the throat” I just feel like it sounds like it’s based “Somewhere Else” in the throat when I hear you and other vocalists vocalise. The vocals I doo doesn’t hurt, I just maybe feel a little tight in the throat sometimes…but that can be worked on…

if i'm understanding correctly, i think the "windy-ness" being described by michael benus is a little different than david interprets it here. or maybe i just have my own weird problem, but for me it's definitely not a textural "airiness" but an actual tone with a pitch center. after playing around a bit and watching tutorials on whistle voice, i've discovered that it's actually my whistle register. whistle is achieved when there's *too much* closure, it's literally air squeaking through the vocal cords as they're held completely closed. what i'm finding is that with my voice the whistle seems to kick in even with light amounts of compression. i'm not sure if it's related to how i'm twanging, or another related constriction / placement issue. it's cool to be able to do whistle tones easily, but i'm having the worst time trying to remove it from my vocal distortion. i wonder if i need to be constricting in a slightly different area or something, or just constricting less, or if its more about the air pressure and support, tbh i've tried so many different adjustments but to no avail. i think it's something in what my vocal cords are doing, they shouldn't be squeezed so tight that it creates a whistle

Thank you so much for these videos, it shows what a great and dedicated teacher you are!
My question is: I've been trying to practice False Cord screams, and while I think that I'm kinda doing something right since it doesn't hurt at all, I'm not quite sure about the placement in my throat. I noticed that I can slightly "move" the distortion, and depending on where I'm placing it, I can feel the vibration either stronger in the back of my soft palate, right under my chin, or above the Adam's apple. Is it wrong to feel the vibration/distortion anywhere but in a specific place, or am I simply manipulating the tone and I'm doing nothing wrong and can continue like this?

Amazing video! Question for a future one: With the help of your videos I finally started to do false chord growls without straining my voice, but they seem to have no sustain. I believe that my breathing technique is not quite reight because I kind of run out of air. How much air should I use for false chord vocals in order to make them longer and fuller?

  • @Reddest13

Hi David, love the videos. I got a question
Pitched screams (the Chester scream) are a real handful and from what I'm experiencing, are several steps more difficult than simply just false cord distortion. Are pitched screams actually just manipulation of the vocal break to work together with the melodic tone to "chop" it up instead of just removing it altogether? This is by far my biggest hurdle so far, and every time i attempt to do it, the broken sound just kicks the tone out instead of working with it.

2 questions. Why is it that I'm just a tad sore the next morning after doing a 30-45 min show with false chords. And also. I can get the fry scream but only can project it with my larynx shooting up and doing it in my head voice leading to a scream that is way too tight feeling and is not sustainable.
    Thanks!

When practicing False Chord screams, I need a LOT of power and air to distort the scream, but that makes me run out of air in 2 seconds. I know it's supposed to be done with little effort, but when trying to ease back, the distortion goes away and I sound like an impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger. What am I doing wrong and how can I ease back without letting the distortion go away?

I know what vocal fry is and how the sound is made, but when I try to put it into action once I try to add some power to it, it falls apart and turns into false chord screaming. I've been practicing screaming on and off for a long time now and am getting ready to record my first EP. I do false cord lows and highs and can get great sound when just screaming, but when I incorporate words and start screaming sentences for songs, I overexert myself and it gets harder to keep the same sound and depth without getting lightheaded.
So how would I go about practicing screaming actual sentences with false cord lows and highs without forcing it too much?

So I have an interesting predicament in screaming. I learned how to scream from Chris liepe, so I learned how to add volume to a high note till it breaks up and push thru to a scream while bearing down on my diaphragm. I got really good at them, I got so good I could and can slide a clean note into a scream and back to clean and the other way around. I also got them to the point that I could do them safely and they weren't taxing. I could rage them on a road trip and still have my voice by time I got to where I was going. But looking back and now learning how to false chord I fear that I am just tearing my voice. If you go to my channel and listen to transparent I have an example of this at 0:30. I can distort my scream to sound like deserter, chester Bennington, Corey Taylor style screams. If you have anything to add it would be helpful! Thank you

Im someone who started 4 months ago with false chord screaming and I heard from a lot of people that you can loose your Voice forever, if you do it wrong for a long period of Time.(Its supposed to happen, by applying to much pressure in the throat, so that your hair, which produce your voice, get destroyed. Could you explain to me how I notice that I do it wrong and how to avoid that?
Also I still get sore throat after max. 2 songs, which make it barely possible for me to continue and takes about 3 days to recover.
Just wanted to know if that is normal.
But I sang in total like 5 hours.
Also I randomly speak a few words in the false chord scream every few days since I started.
The time and Duration for the soreness neuer changed since I began.
I only know how to speak in false chord and I only use the shape of my mouthroom to change the sound and I am never loud.
