I’ve always wanted to play drums but life took me in a different direction. This young woman inspired me to start playing at 54 years old. 3 years ago. If I had 5 more lifetimes to practice I could play as well as her.
I Totally agree! I have been trying to play this song for about 1 year now (even with her tutelage online), and I can not even come CLOSE to being able to play at any level near her. Every time I hear this song it sends chills up my spine. Her passion is infectious!
Anika when up upload videos like this you not only improve the drumming world but you reduce the ridiculous gap between female and male drummers, musicians and professionals. It's hard to describe. You are an inspiration to everyone.
With out a doubt my favorite! Playing "slow" is, for me, the hardest. You are incredible by keeping everything in tempo. Amazing! Thank you for sharing.
My God she is so gorgeous and talented...her family and loved ones must be very proud of her. That smile when she is having the time of her life brings me to my knees!!
first drum artist video I've actually watched more than 30 seconds of without turning off. Very refreshing. I know it's difficult to have your own play style and sound but too many drummers these sound the same. You stood out to me
I can't think of a single song in a septuplet subdivision with this kind of tempo, feel, and groove, much less one that sounds so seemlessly smoooth. I'd love to see her and a band do this material live!
...does anyone else listen to Anika to stay away while doing work? Everything she puts into her songs are beautifully structured, and the sound editting is extremely well done to capture the finer details. Keep up the solid work!
When I watch and listen to Anika play, certain words come to mind. Seamless, tasteful, thoughtful, introspective, graceful and effortless (though I'm certain a great deal of effort and thought to into her work.) She is everything I ever wanted to be as a player. Its a beautiful thing to watch and to listen to. Thank you Ms. Niles. From the depths of my heart.
Am I alone in not being able to effectively count to an odd number? Such a mindblow. Love the ghosts, love the beat...Keep being awesome! Edit: My point is cemented by the sheer number of replies with disagreement. This is a complicated beat that can be interpreted many ways. Even the artist herself stepped in and people still disagree. Read before you post.
***** I've found simply playing out odd timing groups in singles on a pad first before hitting the kit is super helpful. you start internalizing the groupings and they become natural and not so "odd"
Pretty sure it's not in odd time. It's in 4/4 time but the sub-divisions are septuplets, that is, 7 notes pr quarter note rather than, say, sixteenth notes or triplets.
Bealtiful, song! Inspiration Every! i am Brazilian! i am drummer! very Good! Very good technique, lots of expression, really inspiring! Thank you! inspired me!
Absolutely beautiful. I immediately shared this with my drum students and other fellow drummers. I believe the second viewing of this video, I was weeping. One of my most favorite time signatures to play in.
Damn....anak siapa la ni...ishhh nak menangis aku. melekat note satu satu..click metronome dalam kepala. U never fail to give me chill n goosebump Ms. Nilles.
Hej Anika. You play with taste and style, and with a lot of character too. Such a natural groove going on and your ghost notes are right in the pocket!
out of interest, @Anika Nilles how are you thinking about the timing? I know it's 4/4 divided into 7's, but I can't help thinking as if it were 7/8 with the backbeat on the 4& (one backbeat per bar) - is this how you're thinking when playing? not sure if that makes sense
+Mark Evans Hey! This is in 4/4, I've played in 7 16th per quarter note... So the back beat for me is always on two and four.. But you also can hear it as 7/8... It's just a bigger time frame...
I'm really not understanding how people are feeling it's in 7/8. Can you explain? She's keeping a 6/8 pulse on the hi-hat and playing 4/4 on-top of that. I'm not getting the 7/8...
Anita you are true inspiration, you bring a new meaning to funk and groove, I watch you play and can't decide weather to try harder or just give up. Your amazing and have inspired me and both my daughters to take our music to another level. Never stop playing, keep the videos coming. Your officially my favourite drummer in the world to watch. Groove should be re named Anika eg " you have great Anika" take care xxx
If you are a talented, hot, German woman and you are interested in odd-time signatures and obsessed with trashy Meinl Cymbals than you are Anika Nilles. :)
I can not get over this track. I am in love with the wash and crunch of your cymbal set up Anika. Your playing is always so tight and enjoyable to listen to, true talent. This video definitely has made me put Byzance Extra Dry cymbals as my next purchase. Thanks for your inspiration Anika! Cheers!
You really are talented and original, really grateful to have found your channel i find myself tremendously inspired by your playing and of course ,humbled.
please forgive me, but I am beyond perplexed (and I'm being overly polite with my language) - but who are the 155 people who gave this woman's playing a thumbs down? Anika Nilles is nothing short of inspiring to all those who have been called behind the kit. Thank you again, Ms. Nilles
i was a high school/college band backbeat guy. Then I became a commercial Fisherman in Alaska, and didnt have a kit for 2 decades. I finally got a clue, and bought a roland portable kit. Your style is inspiring. But i truly wish to thank you for inspiring another person. My 9 year old Daughter was naturally fascinated by the kit and all its sounds, and she was entertained by beating on it for the sake of the fun noise. I showed her your videos. Now she sits with me and will intensely focus on rudiments and metronome exercises for up to an hour. (then the pounding for entertainments sake resumes, but with much better time.) Her favorite , btw, is the piece you played prior to your drumeo quintuplets lesson
greatest, as always .... every new video from you is more mature and mature .... great backing music, great guitar, great bass, great samples, great drums, great cymbals, great skill, great chops, great rhythmic modulations of rhythm = new drum level of 21st century drummers .....
She never disappoints, Always an inspiration! Anika makes playing drums fun again and reminds us all of how creativity can be exciting provided the implementation of restraint is given it's due.
Shes a blessing for the instrument. Makes me love it even more.
close your eyes and listen. this is how we all wish we could play, top notch :-)
Chris L I may play that good if I could live two lifetimes, but I will never look that good doing it. Love her.
I got my own creative style however listening to music and the pocket within is pure to to the whole
I’ve always wanted to play drums but life took me in a different direction. This young woman inspired me to start playing at 54 years old. 3 years ago. If I had 5 more lifetimes to practice I could play as well as her.
Good for you man! Doesn't matter the destination, enjoy the journey.
I CAN LISTEN TO THIS ALL DAY...
I Totally agree! I have been trying to play this song for about 1 year now (even with her tutelage online), and I can not even come CLOSE to being able to play at any level near her. Every time I hear this song it sends chills up my spine. Her passion is infectious!
One of my most favorite drummers. Awesome grove!

0% Nudity
100% Talent
What a great style. You inspire me not to give up. Thank you!
Nudity isn't a bad thing though.
When I watch and listen to Anika play, certain words come to mind. Seamless, tasteful, thoughtful, introspective, graceful and effortless (though I'm certain a great deal of effort and thought to into her work.)
She is everything I ever wanted to be as a player. Its a beautiful thing to watch and to listen to.
Thank you Ms. Niles. From the depths of my heart.
Your kit sounds amazingly full.
Perfect cymbal selection for this track.
This gave me chills. It's like your drumming is not only the beat, but the lyrics and the vocal melody.
Beautiful music, I can lie down, shut my eyes and travel a long way...
this is like the most iconic composition from Anika Niles, really love this
Great drumming. Very interesting set design, with that snare on your right. Thanks for the video.
Hey Fabio, it's a Mapex machete Snare on the left with the black head... :-)
Is that just tuned real loose? Sounds awesome.
isnt the one on the left the Mapex Black Panther "The Sledge Hammer"?
une maitrise et une sensibilité musicale au top, envoutant, merci ,c'est touchant!j'adore

exactly!!!
***** I've found simply playing out odd timing groups in singles on a pad first before hitting the kit is super helpful. you start internalizing the groupings and they become natural and not so "odd"
well I think the signature is not really odd here, just something like 8/4 with lot of ghosts and off beat accents. Great song though!
Pretty sure it's not in odd time. It's in 4/4 time but the sub-divisions are septuplets, that is, 7 notes pr quarter note rather than, say, sixteenth notes or triplets.
+Thomas Mikaelsen you have some good ears!
It’s so crazy, Anika probably has the most instantly recognizable sound as drummers go. Love her groupings of five.
Bealtiful, song! Inspiration Every! i am Brazilian! i am drummer! very Good! Very good technique, lots of expression, really inspiring! Thank you! inspired me!
Simplesmente maravilhoso, a criatividade e técnica dela são fantásticos! Cada vez que ouço essa música é uma viagem dentro do meu inconsciente!
I love how this was shot in the Meinl factory too
Absolutely beautiful. I immediately shared this with my drum students and other fellow drummers. I believe the second viewing of this video, I was weeping. One of my most favorite time signatures to play in.
I don't have much to talk about. Anika continues to surprise us with every new work released!
Thx! Much appreciate that!
Anika Nilles he's playing in a Wayne from Valley Center
Just want to say, your understanding and articulation of rhythm is phenominal
love the 7 feel. seems to have inspired a lot of discussion!
out of interest, @Anika Nilles how are you thinking about the timing? I know it's 4/4 divided into 7's, but I can't help thinking as if it were 7/8 with the backbeat on the 4& (one backbeat per bar) - is this how you're thinking when playing? not sure if that makes sense

got it! I'll try and get my ears used to more exotic subdivisions I guess. Thanks for replying and keep up the awesome music!
Mark Evans It's not a 7 feel, it's 12/8---- duh.
I'm really not understanding how people are feeling it's in 7/8. Can you explain?
She's keeping a 6/8 pulse on the hi-hat and playing 4/4 on-top of that. I'm not getting the 7/8...
The way you compose your rhythms and phrase your fills is soooooo rad. Inspiring and fresh Anika. Thanks for sharing.
You are a breath of fresh air! Love your innovative approach on the kit! one of my favorite YT drummers

Complexity served that fluent, that "smooth" really.
Great output as always. Pretty sure she's one of the best around at moment.
Wonderful playing. Very subtle. Very tasteful and thought-out.
Multitasking has never sounded so positive and uplifting.
Sweet video. Love the crash on her right side. Digging the backing track too.

Your videos are such a blast to watch/listen to. So technical and superb fluidity that makes you into a superb drummer.
I love the part from 2.20 between the 2 snares. This is the best composition I've heard from you since Alter Ego!
Awesome performance! Awesome place! Congratulations! 👏👏
