    When I was younger I was absolutely obsessed with her. I went to a concert of hers, second row but the people in front of us were so kind and let me hop over to the front row. I was just head bopping and just having the time of my life. Joan looks at me, and she goes “You got it, babe!” I’m pretty sure little 8 year old me was dying. I will never forget that day.

      Yelmo Head They were being out of touch and acting like “old people”. They were so disrespectful to these young musicians. Jett was 7 weeks at number 1 on the Charts 2 years after this interview and had a 40 year career. Now Calling him a dinosaur is just an expression to show how completely unaware of her talent he was. Why this hurt your feelings, I have no clue. Please relax, it’s just an expression.

    I remember in 1977 I was in Japan at a concert of The Runaways, they then performed the "golden line-up" of Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, Sandy West, and Cherry Carrie. So for me it was an absolute happiness to see them live, then I raved about this band, I wanted to see and listen to them again and again. And I just fell in love with Joan Jett, and she became an idol for me and remains to this day, although more than 40 years have passed. I still enjoy listening to The Runaways and will probably listen for the rest of my life and remember my youth!!!

    Some context for viewers who were not around in the 70s... Tom Snyder's show ran very late, at midnight CST, and he generally covered one topic per show, in depth. He was sort of like the closest thing we had to Joe Rogan in the 70s in this regard. If he was covering a topic you were interested in, you definitely stayed up late to watch because there was no VCR to record and watch it later.
    This video is on YT because it's a very early interview of Joan Jett who we all know would go on to become famous. She was not famous yet in this interview, and Snyder was not part of the Hollywood press that fawns over celebrities. He was an adult, asking adult questions to guests that he treated like adults. His questions are fair and he respects his guests by listening to their answers and giving followups.
    This particular episode is an absolute treasure because Snyder smartly recognized there was a new movement in music happening and he wanted to both understand it for himself and his audience. Thanks for uploading it!

      I respect your effort to explain to the kids who Tom Snyder was, but comparing him to Joe Rogan is blasphemous. Joe Rogan sold his soul long ago and has done everything he can to try and stay relevant. He is putting on the facade to appear like an everyday guy but he is slave to the NWO deception. I have never seen signs of Snyder selling his soul, and he never tried to stay relevant. He was simply himself.

      Yes. I really became interested in interviews and learning things from them by watching To Snyder's show. I really enjoyed them. And this show had me getting interested in educating myself about all kinds of things.
      During this time in the '70s this show came on after Johnny Carson. There was Tom Snyder's Show. I used to watch a show hosted by Chip Monck( yes that Chip Monck from the Woodstock festival!) I loved that show too. When they took off Tom Snyders show they replaced it with The David Letterman Show...I privately protested by not watching Letterman's show! I really like Snyder's show! But after a while gave in to the new show.😊 Watched lots of late night TV in the 70s.

    Joan Jett is to be commended and respected for many reasons. A few of which are her maturity, thick skin and focus. She’s literally a child here and these men are being rude, pretentious asses. Yet, she maintains her composure and keeps the focus on the music. At her age, I would have wanted to go toe to toe with the jerk stating we don’t ask a question more than once. Okay, to be honest, I felt my blood pressure beginning to rise and I’m in my 50’s and he wasn’t even talking to me. Rude people irritate me. She was so tough and mature at such a young age. She was and is, from interviews that I have seen, very kind and wise.
    …and…Joan Jett IS a beautiful person inside and out who is very talented in many areas!

    This is great. I graduated high school in 1980, so Joan Jett New Wave, and punk Rock were my generation. Funny that Joan and Paul Weller rejected the term Punk Rock. At some point it became cool. Joan is very well spoken in this. Not a surprise that she was able to do what she did with the Blackhearts. Tom Snyder was underappreciated. He was on too late for me to see most of his shows, no VCR in the house. He put together a lot of topical programs like this. Blondie, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Cars, the Talking heads. Punk. New Wave was great

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 11 месяцев назад

      I can remember when the word “punk” was only used derogatorily. Before punk rock, it carried an extremely unappealing connotation. If you graduated in ‘80 then I’m sure I don’t need to explain that one. Most of the original first generation punks hated the label/term, and didn’t want to be called “punk”. As I remember it, it wasn’t until some time around the turn of the decade (70’s/80’s) that it started being self-applied by those taking part in it, and was considered a badge of honor rather than an insult.

      As if she or anyone else needed something as completely ridiculous and irrelevant as a “rock and roll hall of fame”. When are people going to finally realize that place is nothing more than a giant circle jerk wankfest for music industry scumbags and their disgusting little sycophants? Seriously, it has f***-all to do with actual rock and roll. These absurd inductions are nothing more than an excuse for all the industry sleazeballs to get together and jerk off each other’s egos, while they charge $10K a seat for anyone attending, and that includes friends and family of the bands they induct. Half the bands and artists that have been inducted are the furthest thing from rock and roll you can imagine, while actual, important rock and roll pioneers are completely ignored.
      I just wish people would see that horrible place for what it actually is and quit acting like being inducted there is some kind of honor.

    Very interesting, thanks for posting. I'm not quite sure what Tom Snyder's deal was with Kim Fowley, but he's behaving like a condescending prick towards him, even going so far as to tell Kim he looked ridiculous right after he introduced him. Perhaps it was just an old guard reaction to somebody who appeared to threaten convention and the establishment way of life, but it's obvious Kim Fowley knew more about the record industry at eighteen than Tom Snyder could ever hope to know, and as such he merited more respect than Snyder gave him. I notice Bill Graham, probably the most successful rock impresario of his time, did not feel the need to resort to condesention and petty insults, though he too was part of Snyder's generation. Anyway this video was a very cool look back at an interesting time in rock history.

      Did he? He certainly was lurking around the scene back then, that’s for sure. Whether he had a fucking clue or not about what was happening around him was open to much debate. He tried with punk, but the punks rejected him. The Runaways were pretty much the last relevant thing he had anything to do with.
      I will say this much: he really had a way with words. He was a brilliant gutter poet. One of my all time favorite Fowley lines was when he was describing the early L.A. punk scene as “Existential, excremental sexual shit at death’s door”. 🤣

    Kim Fowley was so bizarre, I mean really bizarre.
    I didn't see Cheri or Jackie in the clip. Cheri left to go solo after a short time, but she really started with the band and gave it a 'face' - so to speak. In the beginning for the band, Cheri did a lot of lead vocals, and Jackie was the Runway's bass player.

  • @H-mu4bo
    @H-mu4bo Год назад

    Great interview, Joan was still a teenager but her world view was fully formed. She was dismissed by so many people, but the Runaways were fairly big in Australia and as Joan says massive in Japan.
    Even in the interview, the other guests lauded Paul Weller, but barely acknowledged Joan.
    I think Kim Fowley like Malcolm McLaren was a great ideas man, but could not see past the immediate impact of success.
    She was lucky to have met Kenny Laguna, to push her ahead and stuck with her through the knock backs of not getting a record control with the major labels.
    The industry in America was not ready for an all girl band in 1976.
    Tìhe Go Go's in 1981 after years themselves struggling to get a foot in the door, finally broke through. And Joan in 1982 broke the charts wide open without compromising at all in her looks or style.

They similarly are for those that seek an alternative to rock and roll and other genres. There are also similarities in the subjects they sing about. The differences have to do with style and sound. In my opinion punk artists are: The Ramones, Patti Smith (I disagree with Bob), The Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, The Clash, The Dead Boys and many others. New wave artists are: The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs, The Cars, Elvis Costello, Devo and many others.

    Tom Snyder practiced the Socratic Method. In this approach, we don't rely on leading question, but rather questions that potentially challenge even our own established ways of thinking. In it, we confront even our own biases, in an effort to understand things more completely and objectively. Using the Socratic Method we can confront our own mental weaknesses and discover new concepts. It's not about being the smartest person in the room, it's about learning new things and growing in depth. The best example is when we invite others to examine even our own thoughts, as well as their own and our peers. It's not about trying to assert our own ideas upon others to stroke our own ego. The Socratic Method is a good way to examine things objectively in a more open format.
