My judgment is that Australian dealers are now using this method to play against BYD. Because they found that the market was better than expected, but the price was set lower. Although it is 12,000 more expensive than the Chinese price, they found that the competitor of atto3 is not MG, but KONA. Atto3 is 10,000 cheaper than KONA, so greed begins to play a role. I’d like to see a revision made to the terms, however if they don’t, it’s still a good car. The dealership in Australia is the problem not BYD. I will have the atto 3 delivered soon and model y delivered sometime next year.
Not sure anyone has explained why a clutch disc is present in some EVs. On some, with dual motors, a clutch is used to distribute power from rear to front motors. If in say, an economy mode, the clutch will disengage one end. Often, due to different motor tech in each end. If the rear motor is permanent magnet, and the front is induction, it will disengage the induction motor. Which, unlike a permanent mag motor, can freewheel with no drag.
@@electricviking just a matter of motor tech. I expect advances in induction motor tech will change this. If it means perm mag would go away. But axial Flux, if it ends in viable hub motor implementation, will render all this moot.
I live in the U. S. and am not sure if BYD uses the same distributor here in the States. Nevertheless, judging from the warranty details, BYD is building a sub-standard EV and they need to rethink their shoddy workmanship. If you buy a vehicle knowing it requires such expensive servicing, you should buy a used BMW! I am not a Tesla boy, but Tesla makes a damn nice car! After a test drive on the Autobahn, the Germans say that the Tesla is a luxury vehicle easily comparable to the best German manufacturers! I can't wait for my Aptera!!!
The thing that worries me is what are the parts going to cost. How much will a battery cost if it gets damaged They can charge what they like. $600 for doing a service? Hopefully they will wash the car.
This just shows the problem with the dealer model. Dealers are middlemen and only care about profits. BYD should own the distibution centres and the service centres like Tesla.
In europe we have 2 to 3 year waranty. 100 000 km limit, witch come first. Some manufactures like Hunday or Kia offer 5 year waranty. Other manufactures offer to buy extra waranty.
Well I thought strongly about cancelling my BYD and going with a Model Y but it is $27K more expensive. It’s also much bigger and better, but my wife didn’t want a bigger car. MGZS EV about the same price for a smaller battery. And still no regen on cruise control. MG4 - no firm pricing or delivery time for Australia and smaller boot (363L) but it is nice lookng. So EV Direct today has revised their service pricing to barely acceptable. But left their warranty with the ridiculous exclusions.
good luck with the petition. if typical warranty in australia cover the whole car for 5 years, then more power to consumers there. i haven't bought a car with that good warranty.
My ice Hyundai has a 5 yrs. warranty, but when the lcd info screen failed, Hyundai told me the car's electronics have a separate (fine print) warranty for 3 yrs. only. I think most ice cars sold in Australia do not have "bumper to bumper 5 or 7 yrs. warranties. So in comparison, the BYD warranty is even better than my Hyundai. However the service cost cannot be justified.
@@Moonliters i believe i get only 2 years warranty on certain parts of my bmw x5, and coverage on tires and breaks are even shorter. if one gets bumper to bumper 5 year warranty that is fantastic. I haven't seen service cost break down. is evdirect recommending very frequent change of tires, break pads, filters etc?
@@electricviking I checked the fine print of the warranty on my byd Han ev in china, there are parts covered for 6 month to 2 years too. this is typical in china and usa where I am familiar with. maybe australia is different.
Very sad to hear. Was looking forward to a BYD vehicle, seal or Han. I pay less to service my ICE car and with the Victorian EV tax as well. Looks like I will by another brands EV.
Guess which parts will break first. Hint… look at the warranty. Additionally the warranty could be worthless if it isn’t honored. BYD doesn’t have a reputation in Australia as to whether or not the will back up their warranties
I would think that the warrenty is short because BYD is aware that the parts being used are substandard. They are aware that they will fail quickly. That is a guess on my part.
Good for you. BYD is an exciting brand with what should be a great future, but this kind of shonky behaviour needs to be punished early and hard or BYD and other EV companies will follow suit and let the legacy Australian distributors routinely screw Australians. It’s pretty clear who is behind this. The Manufacturers whether Chinese or German will notice if the distributors get away with it.
Once these third parties believe they can change a contract carte blanche what's to stop them repeating the mayhem and stressing owners. I opted to cancel my order. Im not interested in fighting shifty third parties.
EVDirect has changed the BYD warranty and service costs but I still wary about them. I just wonder how much they are going to charge for the spare parts!
Sam you should’ve ordered a model Y 6 months ago and You would’ve been under price protection six months ago without getting the increase charge for the price increases at least that’s how it is here and then United States and throughout so I’m hoping to be the same there
EV Direct has released updates after the complaints. They've reduced the service cost to average $299/year for standard user doing roughly 20,000km per annum; $189/year for users doing up to 60,000km over 5 years. However, they didn't change the warranty. Just offer first year free car services which is worth $189. Better service deal, but still disappointing warranty. They only listened half.
They have deleted the table with the specific shorter cover on infotainment etc. general clauses are essentially. What other vehicle warranties include. As you say six year km remains versus 7 unlimited kms but still pretty good
John I don’t think we have any clarity yet on whether or not the warranty conditions have changed. But if I’m wrong in that then that’s great. If they revert to the NZ warranty then I’ll be sticking with my order.
@@electricviking went back to their web site and went to the detailed terms and conditions…… the table with all the less than six years items has gone and the have added the usual clauses that you see in other agreements …. ‘ normal wear and tear, user abuse , etc’ . I believe that is what they will settle on… six years with the kms limit and this language to protect them from user ‘abuse’of the vehicle or components .just my read.
Sorry I missed the fact that the table is still in there. The written byd response … did bamboozle me a bit ‘circular language’ .. your point is correct …
Still think this is rubbish on their part! How can it be so different to NZ when it’s exactly the same car RHD configuration from the same factory? Rubbish.
The #1 reason you should not buy the Alto3 is that it is front wheel drive. FWD = poor vehicle dynamics in a high cog SUV. Alto3 owners are already reporting this. Yes, the MG4 and Model Y are rear wheel drive.
The middle man, dealers/distributors, are the most not trusted careers. During the car shortage a year ago,the dealers ask for 10k above msrp for a 40k car explicitly in US. I heard dealers ask for 50k more for luxury car. The manufacturer can do nothing because they can only control the future distribution of vehicles to dealer but can't force the dealer to sell cars they bought at fixed price. MSRP is only manufacturer suggested retail price, is not the actual price. The additional warranty costs are the dealers pure profits. The manufacturer can't enforce the dealers to provide the warranties without charges because the service provider/dealer can tell consumers there is no free warranty service here, and the dealer who provides free warranty service is 200 miles away. What would you do, pay or drive 200 miles for a oil change?
BYD = "Better You Don't" Dump it Sam, get yourself a Y. It's worth the wait. We are waiting for our CyberTruck and Roadster here in California. Hope we get to see them both before China builds a second Space Station...
It's not about the perception of confidence in the product its a greedy cash grab. Making money off excessive maintenance requirements and items potentially replaced out of warranty. This is Aussies ripping off Aussies. Not directly controlled by BYD although I suspect the conditions of the warranty had some level of validation by BYD itself. Having different warranties in different markets is not unusual. But the conditions put forth by the Australian BYD representatives (likely with BYD endorsement) are insulting.
Not sure what your expense would be to walk away from the deal. Since the terms have changed, they should allow you to walk away without cost. Depending on the expense, I would walk away and let the terms and conditions become more settled. Maybe the importer for other countries is different. One important element to confidence in a product is a consistent message and terms. For EVs to be adopted at a larger scale, infrastructure needs to be in place and the prices have to come down.
1 year on the 12volt battery, they normally have a 3 to 4 year warranty from the manufacturer. Looks like they tend to scam people when the 12 volt self discharge through none use and charge for a new battery? Instead of just charging the battery
Cancel your BYD and order a new Tesla Model Y with LFP battery. The wait will be your best future decision. The most modern build car as Sandy Munro said.
I would dump the BYD, shady in the first contacts, imagine how bad in 36 months, BYD could cut back if tax credits in China reduce or end, making BYD scale waaaaay back.
If you can DIY maintenance or can use other neutral garages/companies to maintenance, I think it is no need to cancel the order. However, I see an Australian EV youtuber announced that he cancelled it, he seems to very grumpy.
Model Y, by no means - do beat them all! My opinion arguably! And now? -- You can get it with LFP batteries too! Why not aim for the best? If You can afford it? I can't, but I would! If I could? Byddy stock down 10% because Buffett sells a half percent of his holdings. And his holdings are only 20% of the company's stock. And cars are only roughly a third of BYDs products. I would think investors would be relieved to learn that Mr. Buffet has not dumped his holdings. This company is still in its relative infancy. He must take a bit of profit from somewhere to shore up Berkshire stock. I am going to hold onto my shares.

I’d like to see a revision made to the terms, however if they don’t, it’s still a good car. The dealership in Australia is the problem not BYD.
I will have the atto 3 delivered soon and model y delivered sometime next year.
Agree
Not sure anyone has explained why a clutch disc is present in some EVs. On some, with dual motors, a clutch is used to distribute power from rear to front motors. If in say, an economy mode, the clutch will disengage one end. Often, due to different motor tech in each end. If the rear motor is permanent magnet, and the front is induction, it will disengage the induction motor. Which, unlike a permanent mag motor, can freewheel with no drag.
I’m still curious about his too…..
You've mention the NZ warranty. It would be great in a future video if you could if you could compare OZ and NZ service costs. Potential BYD buyer
Service cost are about $600 lower in NZ
Fire the Australia BYD distributor and invite the distributor from New Zealand.
This just shows the problem with the dealer model. Dealers are middlemen and only care about profits. BYD should own the distibution centres and the service centres like Tesla.
I agree.
Hey Viking,
You should consider moving to New Zealand, they are more fair dinkum about EV adoption.
.....Just kiding mate 😉
In europe we have 2 to 3 year waranty. 100 000 km limit, witch come first. Some manufactures like Hunday or Kia offer 5 year waranty. Other manufactures offer to buy extra waranty.
I just ordered a MYLR, white on white, 18" Gemini's (for range), w/ FSD, del Dec 2022 to Mar 2023, hopefully after Jan 1 2023 for tax credit.
Sam, can you do a video on Avatr 11. It looks amazing
Go Electric Viking
Cheers John :)
As a stock holder in both BYD and Tesla I am disappointed. Does Tesla change their warranty country to country?
I think it’s the same worldwide
good luck with the petition. if typical warranty in australia cover the whole car for 5 years, then more power to consumers there. i haven't bought a car with that good warranty.
BYD’s warranty is not better than Hyundai. Have a look at the fine print.
If everyone cancels , they will change their mind. Money loss talks.
Cheers mate
The insurance people see problems! In theUS try getting warranty work done correctly
Have they though? I hope you’re right, but I haven’t seen them officially say they’ve changed it.
@@electricviking I received an email from them at 4:24pm this afternoon. Are you sure you haven't received it?
maybe just ask the BYD NZ to open the new showroom in OZ, cause EV direct just an Import Car Company
Not sure. Rever Automotive is an official BYD distributor in Thailand, so I think EV Direct maybe the same for Australia.
very good movement also for future selling attempts of BYD and others. Common customers get better contracts !
Sam you should’ve ordered a model Y 6 months ago and You would’ve been under price protection six months ago without getting the increase charge for the price increases at least that’s how it is here and then United States and throughout so I’m hoping to be the same there
Mate I think prices are going down to Europe 41k USD within a few months.
Rubbish.
Good job
Easy just cancel your pre order and buy no BYD vehicle until they change it
BYD = "Better You Don't" Dump it Sam, get yourself a Y. It's worth the wait. We are waiting for our CyberTruck and Roadster here in California. Hope we get to see them both before China builds a second Space Station...
Thanks for your feedback mate.
Byd is manufacturing in india atleast atto 3 and it costs 22 lakhs Indian rupees it's 27,000 usd unlike byd e6
Great news
Not sure what your expense would be to walk away from the deal. Since the terms have changed, they should allow you to walk away without cost. Depending on the expense, I would walk away and let the terms and conditions become more settled. Maybe the importer for other countries is different. One important element to confidence in a product is a consistent message and terms. For EVs to be adopted at a larger scale, infrastructure needs to be in place and the prices have to come down.
warranty and high servicing costs are a big turn off for me
no that is not the reason, the distributor wants to make an extra buck since the manufacturer can not provide more incentive for them.
If they can't prove that they checked the clutch disc demand they give your money back for the service.
You can order Model Y and use BYD until you'll receive Model Y then you can sell BYD and let the next owner worry about servicing and warranty 😁
1 year on the 12volt battery, they normally have a 3 to 4 year warranty from the manufacturer. Looks like they tend to scam people when the 12 volt self discharge through none use and charge for a new battery? Instead of just charging the battery
Good point
Manufacturers don't understand that when you screw over customers, everybody hears about it. This is why Honda is on my s-list.
Cancel your BYD and order a new Tesla Model Y with LFP battery. The wait will be your best future decision. The most modern build car as Sandy Munro said.
It’s a great car.
I would dump the BYD, shady in the first contacts, imagine how bad in 36 months, BYD could cut back if tax credits in China reduce or end, making BYD scale waaaaay back.
Not BYD, it is their distributers but they should also be held accountable for choosing to do business with shady companies like EVDirect and Eagers.
The BYD warranty clearly fails the ACCC “reasonable consumer” test for durability! As a result it’s in breach of consumer law.
If you can DIY maintenance or can use other neutral garages/companies to maintenance, I think it is no need to cancel the order. However, I see an Australian EV youtuber announced that he cancelled it, he seems to very grumpy.
They are threatening that if you do that they might not cover the warranty. Opaque though.
Model Y, by no means - do beat them all! My opinion arguably! And now? -- You can get it with LFP batteries too! Why not aim for the best? If You can afford it? I can't, but I would! If I could? Lucky, I like Atto 3 -- and I can afford it! Unfairness - maybe the illegality of the deal? -- the price I will pay for my predicament! Not happy, but I will. My Atto will be my reward. For all of my bad luck. Greetings.
Having such a big difference between China and Australia's guarantee is showing not good things... Doesn't matter how they paint it after!
Byddy stock down 10% because Buffett sells a half percent of his holdings. And his holdings are only 20% of the company's stock. And cars are only roughly a third of
BYDs products. I would think investors would be relieved to learn that Mr. Buffet has
not dumped his holdings. This company is still in its relative infancy. He must take a bit of profit from somewhere to shore up
Berkshire stock. I am going to hold onto my shares.
Geez wow, do I cancel my BYD Atto order? Thats attrocious. This will be our first brand new car and by the seems of that half the electronic components are going to fall apart in 6mths, rear tail lights might drop out and they electronic so not covered right, and then the roof might warp only to get a "stiff crap" response from the manufacturer? Thats the kind of thing would make me torch a dozen BYD distributors to the ground .. but what would BYD care, they literally have 100's of thousands of non compliant EV Cars parked up in China going to rot
Hey Sam...are you aware that the first 300 people who ordered the Atto 3 in Victoria have been invited to the Victorian launch next Wednesday 7th September at Chadstone's flash new hotel attached to the shopping centre? That 300 people includes me. Not sure who will be representing BYD at that launch, but it will be a good opportunity to express our concerns to the right people.
Hey mate, I am , I’ll probably go.
@@electricviking I eagerly await your episode about EV Direct's backdown on the warranty and servicing issue...I imagine as a result of directions from China, along the lines of, "WTF are you doing? Trying to destroy our reputation even before you deliver vehicles in NSW and Victoria. Fix the problem you idiots!"
So BYD and the importer watch these clips eh? Well I hope they read the comments too. I liked the BYD initially - but I am put off the entire brand now. It looked good and offered much - I do not appreciate being taken for a ride and left out in the cold. Keep your promises - it makes your image look better. It is very much tainted now.
I was hoping byd was gunna be the new Tesla, instead it seems like the next gm. Sorry, won’t buy an ev till Tesla.
CANCEL THE ATTO 3...This would speak louder than any words you have tried so far...Don't forget the pending arrival of MG4 & others that will doubtfully arrive between now & the Model Y.
If I were you I'd cancel. Even if they reverse course on that warranty trust has been broken. You'll be relying on that sleazy dealer group for service, who knows what they'll do in the future.
I'd be cancelling. That's a shit warranty which rings alarm bells. And a $600 service fee just to change the blinker fluid?
Why does BYD have a 3rd party distributor? Why not import direct like Tesla? Sounds like buyer pays a middle man fee for less service. Pass.
Good question….
So what you're saying is, these stupid warranty is only in effect in Australia? And only in Australia? Sounds like a problem with the aussie distributor, rather than byd itself.
EVdirect just too greedy.
I believe BYD should explain this, if not they will make a great misrake both in Australian & global market. I hope they will chose the right business practice.
