Taking my Homebuild Race Car to my Childhood Fav Racetrack! Laguna Seca - E55 ASL Part 24

  • It has taken a lot of hard work designing and building this car but moments like these are what make you think, it was all absolutely worth it. Taking the E55 ASL to Laguna Seca was easily the best track day I've ever had. The car was at a different level in terms of power and handling. Didn't do the best as a driver, couldn't push all out because of the noise regulations but just the experience of driving that car on the track was an absolute childhood dream come true. Can't wait to develop the car further and see where it takes us!

      it's measured at 20 meters, so it isnt that bad, sound will die off in that distance. and there is often trackdays out there for "louder" groups at "108db" which is pretty standard at most racetracks.
      The track is only allowed something something low number loud days a year, including large sponsor and whatnot events like IMSA, the Rolex, ect. And the rest are all limited to the lower db reading.
      It's better than the track just shutting down for everyday people.

    I laughed my ass off 'your warm up is their best lap times' LOL
    FFS noise restrictions on a race track!!! Totally agree with you statement of these people living their as idiots!!! For me your car is a sweet lullaby, no joke.
    HA, this video is a nice middle finger to those keyboard engineers, you absolutely smashed it, people will listen cuz you speak facts and your ideas are absolutely legit.

    • @jangzstarr
      @jangzstarr 4 года назад +1

      @Lucas Van Hamburg you have misunderstood my comment, I shall clarify:
      You are a "student of knowledge" and NOT a "keyboard engineer", we are both inspired to learn and I'm also doing stuff now in preparation for my own build.
      Have you heard of the phrase 'keyboard warrior' that is used to describe people who are very negative and critical of people online?
      Previous there have been people questioning this man's ideas sitting behind a computer, saying his ideas are wrong, it wont work, thats not correct etc etc BUT clearly this man's knowledge and experience is sound showing that his ideas actually work in real life, NOT like the negative and very critical "keyboard engineers/warriors" who talk crap and not show their arguement in practice, unlike this man!
      So being a 'student of knowledge' to gain automotive engineering knowledge and know how is NOT a bad thing at all, I encourage it as I'm leaning the same and many people are. People following this build are people with serious interest.
      But a "keyboard engineer" as I explained, I don't agree with. If they have something to criticise then suggest an improvement, show the argument or bring a solution, don't leave it with negativity and word it like a question not a statement etc, you get me?
      Hope that makes sense.
      Really excited you want to learn and one day do something, I would love to hear your ideas.
      Take care man ^_^

    • @jangzstarr
      @jangzstarr 4 года назад +1

      @Lucas Van Hamburg oh wow I love that idea!!!
      In fact the project I'm currently working towards is of a similar idea.
      Im taking a Honda Civic Type R engine K20 (or a cheaper R18 engine that I currently boosted in my daily car to 310bhp, Civic FD1), plan is to compound turbocharger setup (2 turbos, 1 small and 1 large)
      Then create the subframe and almost like a cage around the engine where the swing arms will attach and suspension.
      That unit will be welded into the back of a Honda Jazz MK1 which has a decent but not so tiny wheel base, fuel tank is placed in the middle between the driver and passenger (from factory) so good weight distribution and the chassis is already race car ready with dual layerd floor from factory which adds stiffness that lot of people overlook because it look so innocent and slow family car, but they'd why it'll be so fun and such a suprise.
      Plus it'll be stripped out and with plexiglass windows for weight reduction etc
      Depending on which engine power will be between 310bhp or 450bhp in a car weight high 800 ISH kg or less.
      While I build this subframe/engine cage for this mid engine setup and gain experience. I am simultaneously also looking to create a front section with suspension and cooling and then the driver cockpit area for a full scratch build race car like this video and bolt all 3 sections together.
      haha what you think?

    • @jangzstarr
      @jangzstarr 4 года назад

      @Lucas Van Hamburg I will most definitely video document this and make sure to let you know about it and appreciate the suggestion for engines.
      However I've been messing with honda for years and luckily have never had an issue, also need to consider physical weight of the engine and supporting mods from the aftermarket both internal and tuning solutions makes it easy to stick with Honda engines (at least for now)
      I'd love a V8 tho, that would be insane!
      I will be tearing down my friends Civic Type R this weekend to plan out the wiring harness and ECU.
      All the best man ^o^

You've 'owned' this project from day one with a superb design and build. So if your car has such a high power to weight ration perhaps you could sacrifice a little power and get the exhaust a little quieter you could keep the stewards happy and still have a very fast car. Laguna Seca incredible altitude changes, blind corners it sounds a little like Mt. Panorama here in Bathurst NSW Australia, a track most Australian drivers probably dreamed of when they were young too. Also what I think is truly amazing is your ability to plan, design and build a car so well that it is performing this well before you have even finished it, to me that shows just how much you know what you are doing.

You can see how hard the tire is just by looking at them at 12:34 in the pits. The thermal temp is that on track or in the pits? It says only 30C the tire appears to not be making any heat at all. The sound limit reminds me of 2008 when our shopfitting factory was being rebuilt after the 2006 Buncefield Oil Storage Depot explosion nearby on an industrial site in England. The area was reclassified as a 'Business Park' or somesuch corporate bullsh!t and new offices were built next door over the fence where another factory had been demolished.
    Our electrician was up a ladder outside connecting the dust extraction fan motor and one of the new neighbours asked him what he was doing. He said that he was wiring up the extraction system and the guy over the fence said, "Oh no you are NOT!" and we had to get the Director to calm him down.
    They ended up taking another week to turn the newly installed extraction unit 180 degrees to face the other way and build a soundproof housing for it. Our company had been there for over 30 years.

    thats awesome man! glad that you were able to do some good laps and test the car. also, you should make a "Laguna Pipe" next time! lol.

    This is impressive. Not just in the chassis, but in your decision to use an "orphan" engine. Most people building a car like this would have gone for the obvious choices - Chevy LS, Ford Coyote, Toyota 2JZ, Acura Integra, etc. - but you picked something not at all standard. In that, as well as in its appearance, it reminds me of Max Balchowsky's Old Yaller - a home-built sports/racing car from the Fifties, which used a Buick "nailhead" engine.

    I think the sound limits are terrible, but I'm pretty sure if the city catches high levels the race track will get fined. That's why they're so strict about it. Road Atlanta has the same issue.

    laguna seca was an old volcano. You can make your own exhaust muffler. make 2 holes on 2 pipes side by side and weld then, the holes must face each other.

    If the center of the tread width is too hot it is over inflated the tires crowning....the opposite is true for under inflation..... using the camera is an awesome tool to use for chassis adjustments it would be interesting to see how they look when driving.......great project and I can appreciate all your very hard work......from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠

    I seems that our governments have decided that they hate race tracks, well at least where I am. The zoning of high density residential areas right next door to tracks seems to be their way to get rid of them. It's happened to 3 motocross tracks and a road circuit over the last 10 years, all with in 2 hours of where it live. The kick in the teeth comes when the same officials come out saying people should take their cars to race tracks if they want to drive fast. An interesting build, keep up the great work.

      Even tracks that host major events (like F1) has only a few numbers of "free noise" days.

    Amazed to see the car drives so well straight from build to the track, without much suspension tuning and no weak parts. Though, it looks like the aero is not working well on the back side. Maybe u can try putting pressure sensors (air/loadcell) on the floor/diffuser to understand which part is not working. Great build, great car, love your videos

      The lack of rear bodywork will be causing lift. Also, the car is designed to have a rear wing. When the intended bodywork is made, there will be some extra front downforce, removal of lift from the rear bodywork, and real downforce from the wing. I'm sure he will make those parts very soon.

    • @nirtal2604
      @nirtal2604 4 года назад

      @@paulstandeven8572 I agree the lack of bodywork might cause lift in the back but the floor/diffuser should generate quite a lot of rear downforce, so Im surprised to see lift on the back-end

    • @Hole_Motorsports
      @Hole_Motorsports 4 года назад

      Nir Tal diffusers need to be larger to generate a ton of DF and a wing will still be more effective. The issue here is likely aero balance as it makes too much front DF and not enough rear

    Congrats, incredible build and results. Radical would be tough competition should you make this a production vehicle, however, if you can market it for significantly less then it would sell like hotcakes. All the best!
