The Pentax 67 is a beast of a camera, and the 105mm f/2.4 is a lovely, lovely lens, although, I am often curious with the 165mm f/2.8. I also love the 75mm SMC, and for landscape work, the 55mm 4.5 always came with me. As a P67 MLU owner, I found myself taking the Pentax with me a lot more often than my RB67 on shoot. Before watching this video, I actually idn't know that the P67 weight almost the same as the Mamiya; the Mamiya just "feel" heavier. Although, since I had picked up a few Mamiya SIX folder and Moskva 5, my Pentax 67 MLU is now living most of its life in its case, mostly because the busy summer travel season when I often pack a folding camera. But still, it always feel special when I get to shoot with the iconic P67.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Thanks! Yes I was surprised that both cameras were very similar in weight. I have the Moskva 5 and some other folders! See my Perkeo 2 video if you've not already seen it.

I used to own a 165/2.8 and it's a great companion to the 105. Just be aware of the minimum focus distance (1.6 meters I recall), but that's easily fixed with a small extension ring. Those came in a set of three back in the day, and the smallest would do for portraits. Recommended!

Yes well spotted! My first time in Rotterdam (I've since been back again - more videos to come!). Sorry to hear that you sold your 67. Easily done when a camera gets issues. I sold my Contax 645 after an electrical fault before the prices tripled :( ..noted about the flare resistance, thanks!

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Precisely the Pentax 105 f2.4 is the reason why I want the beast of a camera that the Pentax 67 is, although much easier handheld than the Mamiya RB/RZ with the equally good 110 f2.8. I had one, but replaced the whole system with a Mamiya 6MF, although it and the M7 are also good, but just the two lenses mentioned are something on their own for portraits. Hassy also has their 200 series with 110 f2.0, but have realized that it is extremely difficult to hit accurately with it when it is wide open. Got damn expensive too.
Live in Norway and for a long time the exchange rate for NOK was very good against both $, £ and €. Now we have a bad exchange rate and when all such optical and camera goodies have also become so expensive, I am glad to have bought mine in time.

I must be the Odd Duck ; I shoot Medium Format on my EBONY 4x5 , but I love the results from my ROLLEI 75mm 3.5 , and I have just procured a superb museum quality Wide Rollei 55mm F4 ... that camera , is so lovely it " sings " cradled in your hands ... Matt get your hands upon a 55 mm F4 ROLLEI ... then you're shooting.
Almost forgot ... I looked at the Pentaxx 67 , and am glad desisted ...the Leica M3 is louder yes so lovely compared to the Rollei's that are superbly quiet , and the Leica blushes in comparison . That Pentax is huge loud compared to my F3 Nikon ... Clunnk Wow 🤔 One last thing , warmth ... people honestly walk TO you and chat you up , they love the TLR ... and want their photo taken.

When i did my A-level i had a canon F1 with FD L lenses, buy a guy in class had a cheap medium format camera and his prints blew mine away from a quality stand-point. So, i got hold of a Mamiya RZ for cheap, then traded it for a pentax 67 and later moved to a mamiya 7ii. I loved that pentax 67. Had to hang a bag full of rocks from my tripod to minimise the shake ftom the shutter. The images from that camera were gorgeous.

Nice video, Matt. I love taking pictures with my two Pentax 6x7 MLU and 67. Just this incredible sound when the huge mirror flips up and crashes down again! Only focusing especially with the 2.4/105 with open aperture at short distance is a challenge every time (I have the microprism as a focusing screen). And the camera is already heavy. But I would definitely shoot without the wooden handle, I only use it for carrying. Cheers Andreas

Get this combo and I’d say to most average photographers you will spending around £2.50 every time you press the shutter.
Fujifilm GFX w/Mitakon 65mm f1.4 will give you the same results and would pay for itself after the average photographer takes just 1,000 pictures on med format film.

I don’t think you shoot film for the economy - it’s more about the process. I still shoot a Rolleicord from time to time just for the fun of it and there’s still no other experience like looking as those big negs on a light box.
And making your own prints is absolute magic. I love it. And people love seeing a print.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 месяцев назад

Thanks David, yes I dread to think about the cost if people are shooting say Portra 800 with this. That said I only had 10 frames and I got more keepers than if I shot 10 digital. Film will make you (me/ people*) shoot better vs digital, no question and if you limit yourself to 10 frames per shoot you can do 100 photoshoots (based on your maths) for the same cost as the GFX. *That said you'll need a cheap digital too to be able to show the model the photos/ get them warmed up.
What you say makes good sense but I did the maths years ago when considering a digital back for a Hassy verses shooting Portra and film made more sense (and looks way cooler..and all the other benefits of film.. for those that like it). For a newbie, definitely shoot digital to learn the exposure triangle first!

Never mind the economy of it, the experience and results are completely different. I just attended a talk by a brilliant war photographer who prefers to shoot film during the day, and digital when he has too (at night). Shoots mainly Leica and Widelux btw. The results speak for themselves. Incidentally, I have a GFX system but happily choose film instead for artistic reasons if that gets me the results I'm after. Horses for courses 🙂

When I worked for a big food company we had a GX680… the reflex viewing, auto shutter cocking, instant(ish) return mirror, and Fujifilm's slick automated film handling made it very efficient for high-volume product photography in a studio environment. I even tracked down a defunct 120 roll film holder for it on eBay, fixed the film holder by soldering in a new frame-counter battery, and tried it for some outdoor photos, but it just wasn't pleasant at all to use outside the studio. Still, it might have been a hit except for bad timing… it rolled out just as digital cameras for studio shooting started becoming practical, and ours was soon replaced by a Canon EOS 5D Mk II with a 90mm tilt/shift lens…
