It’s really crucial for Ellie’s character everything that happened with David. It’s so easy to see her killing him as a win, and even easier to forget that she is just a little girl. Being fourteen and having to butcher a man alive because he tried to rape you doesn’t get any easier just because the world ended, and I think that Bella Ramsey perfectly showed how something like that could take the light out of someone. Even months after, it doesn’t take much effort at all to see how it impacted Ellie and essentially took the last of her innocence from her.

Yeah, I find a lot of people running into the "Why is Ellie being so reclusive?" comment. But I imagine chopping a man's head apart after a near-r*pe experience with a cleaver, would leave anyone stunned and disturbed for years, let-alone a child. That will likely stick with her for life.

    • @toukie

It's everything that she lived through these last few months. Craig (or Neil, can't remember which one) said that they didn't want Joel to save her like he does in the game, and every single time she hits David, it's not just for what he's done to her. It's like all the pent up rage, and hurt, and fear and everything else she has kept bottled inside. "THIS IS FOR RILEY AND THIS ONE IS FOR TESS AND THIS ONE IS FOR HENRY AND THIS IS FOR SAM AND ANOTHER FOR SAM AND ANOTHER ONE FOR SAM AND THIS IS FOR SARAH AND THIS IS FOR ME AND FOR ME AND FOR ME AND FOR ME". Sometimes, we have to act like things don't affect us but at one point, everything just... explodes... and then we're left... numb, and hurt, and we can't pretend anymore... and I believe this is what happened to Ellie. David was just the snap that broke her, but it's not all that broke her

@@toukie I could be completely reading this wrong regards not wanting Joel to be the one to save her, but, just in case, I just want to point out that the scene with Ellie hacking David was pretty much exactly how it went in the game. Only difference as far as I remember is that Joel comes in right at the end of her hacking him, rather than that "baby girl" interaction happening out in the snow. I do however like the thought that each swing meant something, and that she saved herself, as I think it shows that when needed, she can take care of herself

Joel and Ellie were never supposed to bond. When Marlene roped Joel into bringing Ellie to the fireflies, it was supposed to take a few hours. Joel was a heavily traumatized man at the start of this. He would've left Ellie to die if Tess hadn't made him promise to get her to the Fireflies somewhere else.

    • @brewerthecrook3989
      @brewerthecrook3989 Год назад +4

Think of the person Marlene knew Joel to be before the events of the show. The version of Joel she knew would never have bonded with the little girl she was handing over. He's a hardened smuggler, a dangerous man, and shows little emotion or attachment to people. Honestly, the perfect candidate for a job like this. To Marlene, Ellie would always just be cargo to Joel. I think only in the hospital room where Joel basically says, "please, you don't understand," and, "I can do something about it," she gets her first hint that Joel has grown attached. You can see it in her facial expression as the guards haul Joel off to leave the building. She feels guilty when she picks up on the small hint, but I don't think she ever expected him to react as harshly as he did. She highly underestimated his emotional capacity, understandably. Old Joel would never have fought for this girl. We also know that Marlene feels very indebted to Joel for bringing them the cure; she doesn't want to punish him in any way, so I think she takes the gamble and hopes he leaves peacefully. I think ultimately Marlene is a good person, or at least she has good intentions generally, so I can see why she wouldn't want to kill or imprison Joel.

Marlene does say she owes Joel big time, implying she will compensate him in the future, but seems like she can't pay it at the moment for whatever reason. I think paying some of that debt off was letting him walk free even though he mildly threatened her.
edit: They skip the line in the show, but in the game Marlene says, "don't waste this gift, Joel." Suggesting that letting him walk is doing a favor for him, against her better judgement.

More generally, everything about how the fireflies handled things upon Joel and Ellie's arrival was inexcusable. They acted immorally and incompetently and their bad decisions resulted in their demise.

The thing to keep in mind about Joel is that he is a deeply complicated character. They all are. Joel is a great father, but he is not a good man. What happened the night Sarah died broke him, and what he did to survive after that twisted him up inside. He is, above all, a man who will do whatever is necessary to survive and keep those he loves safe, even if it means killing innocent people. That part of him never changed.

I think Ellie for sure knows Joel is lying to her-and what really has her upset is that he 1) took away her choice and 2) took away her purpose: she believed she was the cure and meant to save everyone, and now that’s gone. Joel was thinking of Bill’s letter (“that’s why men like you and me are here-we have a job to do, and God help any mfuckers who stand in our way.”) and Ellie is thinking about what Maria told her (the only people who can betray us are the ones we trust). It’s sad that from here on out, their relationship will change forever. This is why this story and these characters are so amazing!

This must have taken place at least about two months after the last episode. There wasn't a speck of snow. So was this new dynamic with chatty Joel and quiet Ellie been going on that whole time, or was she just having an extra quiet day like Joel said? I think Marlene knew full well what she was doing when she sent Joel off with just those two guys. You could almost see it on her face as the three of them walked past her out the door. She was kind of looking for someone to take the guilt away from her. She was definitely letting Joel go and he knew full well he could have left without killing her. Also, he did leave the two nurses alive so, the Fireflies will know what happened. They also know Tommy, so they are bound to look there.
I think it wouldn't have ended up mattering to either Joel or Marlene what Ellie's decision would have been. They both would have ended doing what they thought was best. I believe Ellie would have gone through with it. I don't think
going in she thought it would mean sacrificing herself, I think she, like Joel, just thought they needed her blood. But I think she would definitely have still gone through with it. As she said to Joel, what would have been the point of everything she had been through? There's no halfway with this. We finish what we started.
He may very well have doomed all of humanity. QZs aren't the answer. We know at least the Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago and KC QZs are all gone. He killed that doctor. How many of them that knew how to do this were there even before the apocalypse? Joel was basically Kathleen at that point.
What are the odds that someone else gave birth while being bitten by a clicker, they werent killed by the clicker, and then immediately cut the cord? Even so, what is the exact amount of time you would have to wait to cut the cord before too much of the cordyceps were transferred? Marlene didn't even know Ellie was immune until she was bit 14 years later.

    • @Kayjee17
      @Kayjee17 Год назад

Did you miss the part where Marlene said the doctor "hopes" he can culture the cells and make a cure? Maybe in our 2023 with all the medical and scientific advances they could do it, but in post-apocalyptic 2023? Let's be realistic about it - no way. And on the 1 in a million chance it works, you still have Fedra and infected and raiders and cannibals that can kill you.
You're right though, QZs aren't working. Places like Jackson are. You get cooperative groups living in fortified places that are willing to put in what it takes to keep the place safe, and you have the future of humanity. The world temperatures go down because global warming has stopped. This strain of fungus dies out when the infected die and/or when humanity learns what kills it. The US at least has groups of people who know how to work together as a whole from living in places like Jackson all their lives, and they gradually take back the world over hundreds of years. It's not a quick fix, but it leaves the world a better place overall. And it doesn't require sacrificing a child to hopefully, maybe, if things are very lucky, and if they could replicate it enough, cure that wouldn't stop people from dying in many other ways.
The only thing Joel did wrong was not telling Ellie the truth.

At first, I hated that Joel lies to Ellie, but I thought about it since then. I think that, since he made the decision for Ellie regarding the cure, then the least hurtful course of action after that is to lie. Doing so, he tries to give her some time of innocent happiness as a teenager in Jackson (before she possibly finds out), instead of a most probably broken relationship and a failed destiny feeling right from the beginning. That's why, in my mind, it is even more important that he swears at the end, so Ellie will believe him.

They were great and like I said before I’m just so happy that people who are not gamers or didn’t play the game got to experience this amazing story.
As a father I would have done the same as Joel except I wouldn’t have lied to her. The trust was broken because in her heart she knew he was lying but couldn’t bring herself to admit it. I think you said that you watched the Inside The Episodes after each episode.
I’ve heard so many people say that they didn’t expect anything like this story to come from a video game, and not only that but that they stayed so faithful to the game and how some of it was basically scene for scene and/or line for line. It shows you just how good the game was, both in writing and cinematic style.
I thought Pedro and Bella were perfect for the roles of Joel and Ellie and their chemistry was off the charts, and it is the same off screen as they have developed a father/daughter dynamic off screen as well. The interviews they do together are hilarious. It’s just so natural for them.

To be fair to Marlene, she didn't know about the surgery back in Boston. So she didn't lie or not tell them the full story. She just knew Ellie was immune and could be the answer. It was the doc who figured out how exactly the immunity was working and what he'd have to do to make a vaccine. I don't agree w what Joel did - the intention is that the vaccine would work if they had a chance to make it, but Joel sacrifices the rest of humanity to save Ellie. But I 100% understand why he did it. He just regained his own humanity and he cannot lose another daughter. He simply cannot. There is no choice for him. But I don't agree with it. But I also don't agree with Marlene and the fireflies. Ellie would for sure have chosen to do the surgery. She's a tough little badass and would totally sacrifice herself for humanity, but they didn't give her a chance to choose that. They should have told her the situation and allowed her to give informed consent (or decline, but imo no way she would decline). But they didn't. Everyone sucks here except for Ellie.

And, without spoilers, I can confirm Bella and Pedro will be able to continue their roles. Bella is petite and youthful looking, but is 19 currently. There is some passage of time throughout the game, but it's nothing like the 20yr jump at the start of the show. They are good to go for at least the next 2-3 seasons.

I played the game when it came out and I really liked the show. Two things I’d like to say though.
What I don’t like is the show inferring that there could be more ellies. As in more pregnant mothers could be bitten while giving birth and eventually the same situation could happen. This makes Joel’s actions a better argument even if he doesn’t know about this. This whole sequence is not in the game lol
I also think one thing people forget is that Ellie saved Joel’s life twice. Maybe that isn’t his primary reason for saving her. But put yourself in his situation and ask yourself what you would do knowing that. The whole debate today about whether Joel is right or wrong seems to miss this basic human desire to reciprocate.

I find different reactions very interesting. I was like you, siding with Joel immediately, thinking "do whatever you have to do to save her, even if that means killing the surgeon who could make a cure" ... Then you've got others who disagree and say Joel was selfish to save ONE person and thus allow this infection to never end and kill thousands more. The more I've thought about it, the more I can understand BOTH sides. In the end, I've concluded that the decision should have been up to Ellie. They ALL should have sat down and quietly discussed this as a GROUP. And if she went forward with it, give her time. Don't rush it, even if she says to get it over with. No. Give it a week or two so she can think if this is what she truly wants. Also allows her to spend time with Joel and Marlene because she cares about both of them. Marlene and the rest of the fireflies rushing it, basically taking away Joel and Ellies goodbyes (had Ellie wanted that) was what lead to this whole mess. Marlene should have known better. Two individuals, traveling together for 6 months and going through all they went through, you're going to form a bond to some degree. Marlene overlooked their relationship, and it ruined any chance of a cure.

"Tess would be so proud of you"
I don't think she would be. Because she asked him to "set everything right" about all the shit they've done. So for Tess, I believe it's like Ellie said 'It can't be for nothing'. So I do believe that yes, Tess would have sacrificed Ellie to save everybody else. She might not have liked doing it, she might have hated herself for it, but I think she would've done it. Or at least given Ellie the choice.
But then again, who would put a choice like that in the hands of an emotional smartass 14 year old?
And that is the beauty of the last of us. It's learning how to view things from other people's point of view. We followed Joel and Ellie along so we don't want Ellie to die and we don't care that Joel killed everybody in his way. And if he would've been too late, we would have cheered while he avenged her.
However, when Kathleen was on a mission to avenge her brother Michael, we were all telling her to get over it and leave Henry and Sam alone.
I wouldn't have been able to sacrifice my best friend's son to save mankind. He is the love of my life. However, to save him? If someone else was immune and could be the cure but it would mean their death? Get that ficker on the table and slice his brain, I want my best friend's child protected.

I'm afraid that I cannot be as forgiving as you when it comes to Marlene!! I believe that Marlene knew right from the beginning that Ellie was going to have to be sacrificed!! When the monkey wrench got thrown in the works and Marlene got shot and she passed the task of transporting Ellie to Joel and Tess, she did not even fathom that Joel would actually become attached to Ellie the way he did!! In hindsight it would have been better for Marlene to have transported Ellie across the country herself!!
I am 100% behind Joel doing what he did to save Ellie but I am definitely not one-hundred-percent about his lying to ELLIE about what happened!! We already know that Marlene did not tell Ellie that she was going to have to be sacrificed!! That's another reason that I'm not a big fan of Marlene because in her closing words to Joel she asked the question what "would Ellie want to do?" yet she didn't bother to ask her herself!!! But Marlene figured she couldn't afford to have Ellie refuse to be sacrificed so she didn't want to take that chance!! Joel on the other hand told his lie because he was afraid that Ellie WOULD agree to be sacrificed!! And after just having been healed after a 20-year wound and hole in him having been basically filled he could not allow it to be empty again!!
That one there at the point of just about getting back to Tommy's place and he swears to the LIE again, I think you should have said the truth right there!!
But the ultimate question that I take away from this series is this...
Is a world that is willing to sacrifice the life of an innocent child to POSSIBLY save itself really worth saving????
    Can't wait for season 2!!

The question is: is that worth the life of one person. It's literally the trolley problem. You can't cop out and say 'I would derail the trolley'. No, you have to pick.
Most people will side with Joel. But imagine you're literally anyone else in that world. You, your family, your loved ones, all had a shot at living without fear from the infected and that's taken away forever because of one guy saving one girl. Is that right?

See if the child is immune or not. I will not kill the only immune people in this situation. Even if we believe that the process really gives them the vaccine, I think the Fireflies will become such a dictator group just as Catherine's group in episode 4 and 5. And also even if they really produce the vaccine, and they start giving it to people, imagine people like David get the vaccine and keep making the world a hell for so many people. I don't think I'd give the world a chance and let Ellie die in the process.
On the other hand, we have to remember that Joel had a very rough experience starting his journey with Ellie. He lost Tess, Bill and Frank at the starting point. And remember what Tess said to him: save who you can save. And also Bill's letter explaining that Bill and Joel are the kind of men who protect their loved ones. Bill said this: that's what we did, we protect those we love. And God help any motherfucker who stands in our way. Hey. Saw your channel. There're 1000s n 1000s reactions on Coke Studio Pakistan since last 3 years. Reaching up to 2.7m views (ONLY on a reaction of music video) which is extreme rare even in billions of videos on RUclips. Id like to see your reaction on it too. Don't forget to enable Captions in RUclips. Hope you'll enjoy it :) Good day.

Nd this is how Joel dooms the world

*Joel is Ellie's blood father...* I calculated that Joel and Tess had lunch at Bill's when Ellie was exactly 1 year old.
Joel knew Marlene and, accordingly, her best friend, they were a couple. When Marlin says, "I was there when Ellie was born," she seems to be saying by implication, "where were you when your daughter was born?". Joel understood this context, so when he takes Ellie up the hill, he compares Ellie to her half-sister Sarah.

I have corrected you on this before, that is not true. Neither the creators of the game or show said this. You are just making this up. I understand theorizing and having fun with the show, but you shouldn't just make stuff up.

@@cullenarthur8879 I'm willing to make a bet that Tommy will tell Ellie the truth about who her father is in the last episode of the third season of the show... you'll see, it will be so.

@@user-dk3pp2hj3v I seriously doubt it. I have never played the games, but nobody I have seen who has has said anything about this being true. The creators of the show would have had to make a huge change in the story for it to be true. And unnecessary in my opinion. Ellie is Joel's unofficially adopted daughter. It's unnecessary to make her his biological daughter.

@@cullenarthur8879 So you are ready to conclude a dispute remotely? Are you absolutely sure Joel isn't her biological father? Personally, I was finally convinced of their relationship, the reaction of the PSYCHOLOGIST. She said, after watching the whole series, that they even have the same psychotype, and then I watched Joel's dialogue with Marlene several times, and this is a clear hint.
