Thanks a bunch for the Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection shout-out and helping to keep Dave's art and memory alive!
Amazing video!👍👏 I just began my comic book collection and found Toon Haven. They have an incredible range of digital comics for every genre, including the hard to find ones. Lifetime updates too!😁
I used to have some of these books, like complete runs of DNAgents, Crossfire, Jonny Quest, as well as many other Pacific and Eclipse titles, a long time ago... who knew that today some people would pay so much for some of those comics. Rest in peace, Dave Stevens...
David, I know "the algorithm" doesn't reward these considerate, well researched labors of love... but I surely appreciate them. Thank you!
Thank you. Yes I really love deep dives into artists
Really enjoyed the format for this video and the departure from a focused market report. I look forward to more comic history episodes.
Thanks. Ya these take awhile to do though. So can’t come out with them all the timen
Really enjoyed this segment on Dave Stevens, and being from San Diego I used to see him at SDCC all the time. Also, Pacific Comics had a very small store in a strip mall on Balboa Ave. That's where I first bought comics in the late 70s. Weird how it seems like just yesterday.....
Ya I found it super cool to do all this research on him
This was a terrific video David. It shows how much goes on to make a comic book. I love Dave Stevens’ work. So good. The Pacific Comics Compendium is also a great read for anyone interested in the story behind an independent comic book company. Well done David for highlighting Dave’s work and the history behind his struggles.
Good data. Struggles of an artist. Not easy but had a story to tell. Thank you for your content.
Great comic history lesson. Thanks
Thanks for the great story Dave !!
Another great historical piece Dave, thanks!
Well done!
Dave - I’ll say it again, your short, biotics are really amazing. You do such a terrific job at storytelling, creating an emotional connection to the artists, and editing your videos. I never knew Dave Stevens was so prolific. I have many of these issues you described, in the time he took to create certainly shows in his covers. Thanks again.
I’ll second the compliment…These historical videos are amazing!
Thanks. Yes I love doing these. It’s kind of a remembrance of artists that pushed the bounds and brought joy to many collectors
A few years ago I gave a large batch of comics to a comic shop to sell on my behalf and take a cut. They decided to shut down, and when I picked my collection back up they'd included Alien Worlds #2 by mistake. I thought it was worthless until now lol - thanks!
Nice one! I'd love to see an artist spotlight series from you. Thanx
Ya I’ve done a few so far. They take a lot of work but it’s fun to do
Great work. Excellent artist tribute!
another excellent video thanks david
Hey, I usually don’t comment, but this is the best video I’ve ever seen by you! I would love more of these! So cool, informative and engaging. Thank you!
Amazing video thank you david.
Great video🎉 More of these please 🙏
Thank you for all the artist profiles you do.
Great video as always, keep up the great work
Thank you for sharing, keep doing what you do!!!
Love it when you do this comic history content!
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing
That’s fantastic, thanks for sharing
Love this!! ❤
Easily your best video to date in my opinion. You did an amazing job. We need more behind the scenes history video like this.
Thank you for this post! I’ve been trying to understand what the deal was with all the fervor over his art. Now I do!! One of ur best videos!
Wow, fantastic video. Thanks a lot!
Outstanding video!
Wonderful video!!! Great work
Very well done I especially like the history lesson with the different comic books. Insert it as you go.
Loved this format!
Very interesting and informative video. Thanks for sharing
Cool series! Keep them coming
Super helpful, totally worth watching
Great video David I knows it’s a labor of love and I love watching them!
Thanks. Ya took a bit longer to do than I’d had hoped. But finally got it completed
Very interesting, thanks Dave
What a great video! I especially love the different camera angles and the almost pov that were are speaking to you directly! Made it very pleasing to watching and kept my eyes peeled! Great work Dave!!
Awesome. Glad you liked it. Ya always trying something different
"But Starslayer 2 doesn't have a Dave Stevens cover" - Did you ever turn the book over? Back covers are covers too! LOL Great vid, as always.
Awesome video. I obviously knew of the Rocketeer but didn't know much about the man behind it. A very interesting and informative presentation. When I have the time I will check out his documentary. Great work on this video. 😝🤟😈🇺🇲
Just watched the Dave Stevens documentary. Then I found this. It’s great.
You’re awesome! Thank you.
Excellent job sir!
I had to watch this video just to thwart the RUclips algorithm!!!!
This was an excellent blend of information and entertainment.
Thanks for posting these vintage photos. It matters.
I’ve collected Dave Stevens for years-this was so informative-great job Dave
wow, great video. thanks so much
That was a great mini-doc. Didn't know much about Steven's at all as he started illustrating right around the time I was getting out of collecting. Picked up several of those Starslayers back when because I liked Grell.
Fantastic video. I was buying comics in that area and loved his work. I have many and happy to have a 9.8 Planet Comics among others. Thanks
Great video!
He passed away way too young. RIP and Godspeed
this was pretty cool. I found like five books. That you mention on this video thank you
I think this is my favorite video you’ve done. Thank you
Thank you
This was one of my favorite ones Dave thank you keep on doing what you’re doing. I ordered from your store Love all your videos keep the good work up
Awesome! Thank you!
I have almost every single book. Maybe not all in 9.8, but high grade and all found in $1-2 in bins. (Except the Cheval Noir and Bad Planet…which I still need).
I love these videos
Great content.
great content. ty
I've got a few of these books, I'm sure they'll level out at some point.
Would you do more videos like this? I appreciate the up and down videos, but this was really awesome! You are really well versed in comics and are very good at telling stories, but this type of video with the history and background of the artist is top-notch and way more entertaining as a comicbook fan. Thanks for this, and hopefully, you'll do more content like this.
Ya I’d like to. They take along time to make and edit. So I can’t do them as often. This one I was working on for nearly a month
Lots of pieces of trivia in this one I didn't know. I need to get around to watching that documentary.
Great story telling Dave. Would you consider covering the life of Jose’ Gonzalez who drew the original “Vampirella” magazine for Warren ? Love this kind of content ! ✍️🔥🙏
Thanks for the wonderful video on the great Dave Stevens. Those are my CGC 9.8 copies of Crossfire #12 and Jungle Comics #1 that sold on eBay just last month for the prices you noted.
That’s awesome. I don’t know why they are going so high recently
Great video, I really enjoyed learning about his background. For some reason I had a thought that he was highly controversial, but I must be confusing him with another artist. Either way, thank you for sharing!
I didn’t find anything controversial in my research. Seemed like a pretty good guy all around
Missing in this list is Sheena queen of the jungle 3D #1 one of my favorites.
Ya I didn’t do every single one of his covers. There are a lot
Dude, u really did a good job this time.
Hope u have 1000 copies of these books in your own collection
u deserve it to pay tribute ro him this way !!💪👊
Thanks. I only have like 3 Dave Stevens books right now.
I had bought a collection though a bankruptcy sale in 2021 for 15k. It easy tripled my my money giving me some great books to my PC. In 2022 as I had thought I got all the keys out, my wife wanted a divorce and I just wanted these books gone. November of 2022 I sold what was left. 3k books for 3k. All these Steven’s books were in there. I was exhausted from the divorce and from trying to sell the collection. I knew I’d regret selling them…. And I do.
Ya it’s crazy how much they went up in price
Dang...she got you twice
I have the Star Wars #6 may have a few of the Rocketeers. Gotta dig through my collection, may get dusty😂
I remember sticking stacks of Airboy 1 in my back issue box in the late 80s... not even bagged and boarded as they were only 50 cent comic books.
I love Alien Worlds so underrated imho!
Hey Dave, I just watched this. It’s totally awesome. Thanks for giving us all this information about the great. Dave Stevens.. well I have to say my two favorite artists probably because of EC will always be Wally Wood and Al Williamson.
Thank you
I love the Johnny Quest Jade Incorporated. I have one it's awesome.
I had it as a kid too
Nice t-shirt!
So sad🥲
Man, I've still got a lot of this stuff. I dumped the rest of the run on a lot of these series, but I kept the Dave Stevens covers.
His art was so good that when my mother saw the poster I had for the Rocketeer Collection published by Eclipse (the one with the Harlan Ellison introduction) she asked me if she could have it. She framed it and hung it near the door so people would see it walking in. She never wanted to read the comics, but she loved the poster art. I still have it in the frame she put it in.
That's a pretty powerful artist that when people see their artwork without any real context, they still fall in love with it. I'm assuming that's why these books are fetching these prices since many of the interiors aren't worth your time, especially all that Blackthorne garbage.
I love Captain Victory, got the full run. Kool late era Kirby
I love the history video mixed with increase video
David really enjoyed the artist focus content. Might I suggest one on Bruce Timm books. Seeing record sales for out of this world #1, Vampirella monthly #20 and before watchmen silk spectre 4 plus Luke cage. Thanks.
I prefer to do them on artists that have already passed on. But I’ll put it on the list
Disney made Rockateer, back when Disney could actually make a movie. Wish those days would return.
dang i used to have that airboy.sold it for under a dollar like a decade ago
So what would his autograph go for ? I picked up 2 books with his autograph last year . Not planning on selling them but not sure what the value of his signature is .
Great documentary on dave steves
5:45 Hey man, Hello Kitty set the stage for the Shoujo takeover in the 80’s and Shonen’s current dominance of the comic market today. Don’t sleep on Kitty. She pulls.
Did I miss why there is such a resurgence of interest today?
There was a documentary released in late 2022. And maybe the spec of a rocketeer reboot.
Is Space Vixens on the list? That is his #1 book.
Ya it should be but I didn’t put it in this video
I’ve never heard of this artist. Good story and I was surprised Airboy 5 was worth anything. Sadly mine is not a 9.8
crypto levels of appreciation
Love Dave Stevens stuff - one of the first comic book investments I made when I got back into collecting a few years ago was a collection of his work, it included about 95% of all his covers, even the big ones, and I've added to the collection since then. They're all high grade, 8.5 - 9.8 range, but none are slabbed. What do you think. I was originally going to send them all in and keep the 9.8's for my PC and sell everything else. I'm about $700 in on that collection, and I think by doing that I could cover that initial investment plus all the grading fees and come away with some longterm keepers bought and paid for. Would you take a different approach?
That’s what would do. I’d send some in that are worth it and sell them. Then keep the best ones
Best video you ever did, can you do a Adam Hughes and J Scott Campbell like this??
I would sell. There artist specs are funny.
But did he draw spider boy?
😂
What about king kong
There are a lot of covers of his I didn’t put in this video. I could put them all
Disney just announced a new Rocketeer movie and new Rocketeer will be played by black female. Buy stocks.
You’re a bit late on this one. You’re usually on it. I’ve been buying Dave Stevens books since the late 80s have a long box filled with them. .
Nice. Well next time I’ll build a time machine and jump back to the 80s to make a RUclips video 😂
@@ComicBookInvestments I’m talking about the Dave Stevens hype. It’s been going on for six months at least maybe longer. I was saying usually on a bunch of stuff, but this one seems a bit late for you. . Pretty much anybody that was into pre-code Books is a Dave Stevens fan from what I have seen. It was more of a joke than anything because like I said, you’re always on it.
U can keep those books jus leave me my ASM please 😮😮
I like Stevens but no way are any of his filler books worth what people are paying. They’re not rare, none are actual keys & his style was simply a copy of others. Not his.
Rare is only half the battle. Demand is the other half. There is enough demand for his books to command a high price
Was Rocketeer really a hit comic book? I don’t think there were many more than 5 issues made in the 1980s.
It would sell close to 100k copies. So ya I’d say that was a hit. Compared to today at least
Was lucky to meet and talk to Dave Stevens at a comicon in Greensboro, NC, in 1990, I believe. He was very excited to talk about just casting Jennifer Connolly (after hundreds of auditions) earlier that week for the Rocketeer movie. Said he believed she was perfect for the role.... sat down and spoke with him at length and then spoke to the 4 others sitting to his right. They were Marie Severin, Al Williamson, Joe Orlando, and Archie Goodwin. And along with my friend Glenn, we got to listen to the most amazing discussion for about 2 hours, from all of them about comics, history and creators, uncensored... we were not interrupted because someone like Jim Lee (don't remember) was there, and everyone else was at the other end of the floor. We also met Will Eisner, Mark Nelson (Aliens mini), and Mark Schultz of Xenozoic tales, and others. Was absolutely the best Mini-con we've ever been to. They were all incredible to listen to, and they and meeting so many other wonderful creators of the 90's on back are so much of why I've been a lifelong comics fan and collector... Dave Stevens was so excited and couldn't contain his enthusiasm, and listening to him and the rest of them was very memorable for us. He kindly signed my Rocketeer set and others and still have them.
That’s awesome. Ya it seemed like going to comic cons back in the day were much more personal then compared to today
@ComicBookInvestments they were honestly so very humble and didn't understand why so many people wanted their autographs or artwork... Williamson pen and inked a Flash Gordon and Dale with creatures and Joe Orlando drew an awesome "Dumb Bunny" from Inferior 5, and Marie Severin drew several different characters and they gave them to us, for just sitting there and talking with them... We Gave them Money for them, they weren't asking for any. Just very kind, polite and professional creators who'd done a lot and seen more... and they left such an incredible and lasting impression upon us.
Just watched the Dave Stevens documentary. Then I found this. It’s great.
You’re awesome! Thank you.
