  • Sporting Trial's main event of the season. Usually events count together in the Championship. This is a stand-alone event with a Winner at two levels. Gold and Silver Star.

    The 2018 event was held at Bonnie Mount quarry, Eden Hall near to Penrith, Cumbria, by the Northern Phoenix Trials Car Club. The Gold Star Champion was Ian Wright and the Silver Star Champion was Tom McKinney

      It is very, very difficult. Go see the new Gold Star event on my channel. Held in bluebell wood. Slipperier than a very slippery place.

    Watched this when I was young, many years ago ! From memory engines used then were Ford E93a, 1172 cc side valves. Cars were similar and had " fiddle " brakes. Still looks like a good day out and good fun. No alloy rims then !

      It is very cheap and great fun. You can buy and old car with a trailer for less than £3000 that will run alongside the top drivers. The skill bit is up to you.

      Your local alternative would probably be rock bouncer racing. The idea is based on the same thing, but rock bouncers are built in the most american way possible (loud, v8, loads of power, 4x4, etc.). Also with rock bouncers i'm not sure if skill matters as much, because they very often just stay on the limiter and roll over quite a lot aswell.

      Helmets are not required as this is not a Speed Event . MSUK rules. Nothing to stop you wearing one.

      i think they have handbrake for each wheel individualy too

      The diffs are tested (in car) on a specially built rig so that none exert a difference of more than 15Kg pull.

      Up to 1650cc. Usually Suzuki or Honda. I used a Rover K series.

      @@livonia1807 If you get more grip everyone gets to the top and there is no winner. Or you make the hills steeper, with cross camber section and have accidents. It's not as easy as you think. Having road tyres makes it a skill sport. Having chunky tyres is the simpleton's way.

    Wait, do they actually use those spare tires? What's the point?

      The spare is a requirement in the rules. It shifts some weight to the back of the car and yes, they often get used. The tyres on the car are usually inflated to between 3 to 5psi. So they get ripped off the rims and puncture easily.

    Piss all anti roll bar, no helmets, the brush stiff upper lip won't save them if the car topples over. I ain't seen this for ages. Wasn't this on world of sport with Dicki Davies itv

      It's a very slow speed sport. probably never get above 20mph. usually about 5 or 10mph. It's not classed by MSUK as a Speed Event, so helmets, cages etc etc not required.
      There are very few accidents, usually getting burnt on the exhaust!!

      Sporting trials car. Up to 1650cc. About 120hp in a 350 Kg or so car.

      The choice of tyres (and other technical limitations) is the entire point of this. The idea is not to make it easy, but to make it hard to complete a round. It's not a race but a trial!

      @@foleybrown Seems to me it's not even that important who wins. I don't imagine there's a huge prize to be won. Just an exciting day out for all involved. I also like to look at the contestants. There's young and old, man and woman, big and small. I could get into this sport, it seems like brilliant fun.

      They are Sporting Trials cars. Engines up to 1650cc. Rear wheel drive only. No locked or limited slip diffs. Only specific road tyres allowed. Individual hand brake for each rear wheel, to assist traction.

      No. It would be more dangerous. The course would have to be steeper with more chance of accidents. The whole idea is to get further up the hill over a series of hills than anyone else.
